QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2012 -> 01:58 PM) That's going to be my wife's biggest concern by far. She knows that they're going to hate it, at least for a while, but she doesn't want to introduce anything dangerous. Yeah, our puppy LOVES the cats but the cats are extremely skeptical of him. One of our cats likes to tease him from behind the safety of the dog gate. The other one likes to snuggle with him when he's sleeping. He just wants to chase them... always. Do your cats have their front claws?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2012 -> 01:37 PM) Home with a big, fenced yard and a couple of cats. Most likely on the active side. We have two cats. If you go to a Humane Society type of place instead of through a rescue organization, find out if they have been fostered and what, if any, exposure to cats they have had.

Krush, We had the same thing... but our dog's baby teeth have begun to fall off and now he's a chewing machine (he especially likes furniture and arms - though he has a very soft mouth). Re-directing him to stuff he is supposed to chew on has worked wonders. For everyone else, our dog is a pulling machine when on leash. We've been working on heel, but we are currently using a regular collar and there has been little to no progress. I broke down and bought the Gentle Leader today. Has anyone used that product before?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:44 AM) People also expect iron-clad forensic evidence these days. Thanks, CSI! That's true. And due to the cost, in a lot of lower charged cases (think not murder or rape - or DUI since labs are kind of important there), there aren't any labs. That doesn't stop a panel of jurors from expecting DNA evidence to conclusively tie the guy charged with car theft to the vehicle by some fiber of hair left on the seat. In fact, if you are in a jury pool, you might get a question asking if you watch CSI and an answer in the affirmative might make you more likely to get struck from the panel.

QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 11:33 AM) I wouldn't be too excited about Kendrick Nunn. Injuries and not really all that consistent. Nunn, in my mind, would be an extremely important symbolic recruit for Groce. With all the crap that was spewed during the soap opera leading up to Groce's hire about Chicago coaches shutting their doors to Illinois, landing a highly sought kid from the Public League in his first recruiting class at Illinois would be huge. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 07:52 AM) Sounds like you guys did a great job! Glad to hear he is doing so well! Yeah, he's doing great. He's just a sweet tempered dog. He's a high energy breed (Vizsla) and I definitely understand the statement that "a tired dog is a well behaved dog." Like I said, we're still having the occassional accident and he hasn't yet been figured out how to tell us when he needs to go, but most of his accidents seem to come when we're playing inside and he is just having so much fun, he forgets he needs to go. Best thing we have done with him is socializing the crap out of him. For example, my fiancee ran a race the other weekend, so I took the dog with. He met tons of kids, adults of all shapes and sizes, and other dogs and was just great with them. One odd thing that I thought I'd share... he gets really excited when we are getting ready for a walk. He chews on the leash, tugs on the leash, tries to run off with the leash. But the second we hit the door, he's business, stops playing with the leash and ignores it for the entire walk. Given the fact that he is great when we're actually on the walk, I don't know if it's something I should even worry about. Just thought it was odd.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 07:54 AM) Dog is 8 weeks old, had it for 2 nights now. Last night was the same as the night before, still whining uncontrollably for hours at a time (how does she have the energy to even do that? You'd think she's tire herself out). Even if out of crate and in other room, goes crazy until it's near us again. It's like blood-curdling yelps. I'm going to google that 2 week shutdown. I'm no expert on this, but we have had our puppy for about 7 weeks now (got him when he was 8 weeks old) and went through some of the same stuff it sounds like you are going through. 1) At night, we put the crate in our bedroom. He would cry when he first went in there, but being in the same room helped. He would cry for a little while and then fall asleep and that only lasted a couple nights. If he cried at 3 in the morning, I took him right outside and let him do his business and then he went right back in the crate (note, 7 weeks later, he still can't hold it through the night, but he really only cries in the crate now when he needs to go). 2) Puppy pads were worthless for us. Anytime the dog went on the pads, we praised the crap out of him... until we realized that he was going on the pads as a random accident. He just happened to be standing on them when he had to go. 3) Our guy was VERY afraid of other dogs and outside at first. We got him into a puppy kindergarten class and his first day there, he got in, saw the other dogs and cowered. Our instructor told us to just ignore him, let him adjust to all the other animals around him, and after a couple minutes he was fine. We treated him for going outside on his own, for going to the bathroom outside, on walks, for good interactions with people and other dogs. Now, while we still have the occassional accident, he's at ease with most other dogs (the dog across the street that barks at him scares him still) and is great with people. Hope this helps...

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 3, 2012 -> 01:39 PM) Apparently 200 pages of the 6th book are complete at the moment. And GRRM has stated he does not expect the series to overtake the books Short of the 3rd, 4th and 5th books being turned into multiple seasons (possible given the length of the books), there is no way in hell that Martin finishes 6 and 7 before HBO catches up (it took something like 7 years for Martin to finish the fifth book). According to Wikipedia, Martin said the 6th book is 200 pages in and should be ready in TWO OR THREE YEARS. Given that timeframe, 6 will be finished when the 4th or 5th seasons are airing on HBO.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 3, 2012 -> 02:00 PM) I couldn't tell you this. But it matters. It's like when a superior asks me to do something that really doesn't need to be done...but they want it done anyway...only to a different degree, since they're working for the government. They're working under a lot of rules you and I are do not...and I do not know all of these rules, or the reasons for these rules. Weighing in here with my experiences... Once upon a time, I was a state prosecutor in Arizona. I requested dozens of bench warrants. I also worked with a wide array of officers. Most of them were great, some were not (see the officer that stood up under cross examination and accused the defense attorney of committing perjury - that was awesome). Both those topics have been discussed in this thread, but I don't think they are particularly relevant to this holding. The issue before the SCOTUS seems to be whether it is reasonable policy to require everyone entering a jail facility to be strip searched (and note, there is a difference between jail and prison if we are discussing semantcs). The issue is not whether officers should follow policy (they should). Nor is it whether some people will try to bring in contraband in cavities (they will - though Breyer is probably right that that generally occurs infrequently). Cavity searches are extremely invasive. I tend to think that such an invasive procedure should be reserved for situations where there is a reasonable suspicion of contraband (known gang member, metal detector picks something up and you can't find it, I would even concede that a jail with a massive contraband problem might have reasonable suspicion to strip search everyone), rather than as a policy for everyone. I would wager that in most jails, the vast majority of those arrested aren't smuggling contraband. I haven't read the opinion, so I'm not sure how far reaching this holding actually might be, but when there are 5-4 opinions on criminal procedures, I tend to come down on the side of the liberal judges...

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Mar 29, 2012 -> 03:26 PM) Groce has already been recruiting Simeon's Kendrick Nunn (#18 on 2013 rankings). http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/colleges/p...-a-fan-of-groce And ideas about an Illinois Fab Five. Hope people's expectations don't get out of hand. I'm making a bunch of assumptions here but... Assuming no attrition from the current roster except Leonard, and assuming Hill and James stay committed in the Class of '13, Illinois has 6 scholarships for '13 and '14 (Leonard, Head, DJ, Paul, Griffey, Bertrand). With Hill and James already in the fold, that leaves 4. In that scenario, I assume that Groce tries to take 4 in '13 and 2 in '14, leaving one ride free for Parker until the end. In that scenario, how do you take Nunn? I always assumed that the committment of Hill meant that Nunn was going elsewhere? I could be wrong on this assumption, but that would be a lot of guards in one class (granted, the highly ranked early guys in '14 are bigs and you have a guard oriented offense now, but my point stands). Still, good to hear the continued positive feedback about Groce. Seems to be a lot of excitement about his offense. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 01:21 PM) Mark Tupper said the BOT nixed the hire for now. Awesome. I'm actually at the point where I'm rooting for those guys. Where did you see that from Tupper? I just went on the Decatur Herald website and didn't see anything. If true, that's, in my opinion, the first truly embarassing moment of this search. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 26, 2012 -> 10:09 AM) 34-30 in the MAC. Mediocrity at its finest. With Groce, you can cherry pick stats from either side of the aisle to support him or not. The record argument, to me, is extremely misleading. I have no idea what kind of team Groce took over. I know that they won 19 games the year before, but were they a senior laden team? His teams records seem to have improved each year he was there. So I'm not overly concerned about the record. Here are the facts I like about him: He took over a school that hadn't won a tournament game since 1983 and won three games in two different tournaments. He was Rivals' 2006 recruiter of the year for the Oden/Conley/Cook class. Ohio State fans seem to think he would be the ideal replacement for Matta if he ever left. Groce brings recruiting ties to other areas of the midwest. He isn't the biggest "name" hire, but MT tried to get Shaka, he tried to get Stevens. When those guys said no, isn't Groce as good of a name out there as anyone? High upside. Young, energetic. His teams play an entertaining brand of basketball. I'd be ok with the hire. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 23, 2012 -> 01:57 PM) Then he doesn't have to recruit the CPL. The whole "Illinois needs the CPL" thing has gotten blown way out of control. The Kruger/Self teams around 200 had zero CPL kids, in fact they had like no Chicago-area kids. The 2005 team had one CPL player contributing (Head). This. You can win at Illinois without the CPL. Yes, you are going to miss out on some 5* recruits (especially in the '13 and '14 classes). If the CPL does shut the door on Illinois like they did to Kruger, then you have to lock down the suburbs and downstate and you need to be able to pull some kids from out of state. The reality is that if the CPL is going to shut their doors to anyone short of a minority coach, and Shaka Smart said no, Anthony Grant isn't interested, and Leonard Hamilton is 63 years old, what is the U of I supposed to do? This isn't like when Henson left and Jimmy Collins was passed over (though that was an obvious move as well given the stink from the Pearl fiasco - but the CPL coaches loved Collins). Jerrance isn't ready and there's no way in hell Robert Smith gets the job. Hire the best coach and move on. If you can somehow manage to retain Jerrance, maybe the fallout in the CPL isn't severe. As far as recruiting outside the CPL goes, Stevens has the personality and enthusiasm to do quite well. -

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Mar 23, 2012 -> 02:38 PM) I doubt he could get the big-time Chicago guys, but the two of the best Big 10 teams prove you don't need elite talent to win: Michigan State and Wisconsin. Ryan and Izzo are just terrific coaches who know how to develop talent and bring guys in who fits their system. That is what Illinois would have to be thinking along the lines of a Stevens whereas Shaka would have been a Matta/Crean who can recruit with the best of them. Why is there concern about Brad Stevens and recruiting? Stevens seems like an extremely personable guy. His players clearly would run through a brick wall for him. At a power conference, why couldn't he be a good recruiter? In fact, I think that he and Shaka have similar positive attributes when it comes to personality, age, ability to relate to recruits. I'm skeptical about Stevens' level of interest, unless he has decided that Crean is entrenched at IU for the long haul and he thinks Illinois is the next best thing (easy drive from Indy, obviously a pretty good job). But I don't see why people are comparing Stevens to Bruce from a personality standpoint. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 21, 2012 -> 03:18 PM) Illinois doesn't need to get all CPL guys or even the top talent from Chicago to be successful. But what Self did, and Kruger (though he basically struck gold) was to recruit a little out of Chicago and a lot elsewhere. Self got some national recruits, Kruger got the Peoria guys. Kruger didn't get ANYONE out of Chicago. He was blackballed out of the CPL because Illinois passed on Jimmy Collins. You are right that Kruger struck gold with the Peoria guys and then Brian Cook, but there was an uproar when Lance Williams, Bobby Simmons and Quentin Richardson went to DePaul instead of Illinois. Of the top 8 on the Elite 8 team with Kruger's recruits, Lucas Johnson was the closest thing to being from Chicago. The point is that in the coaching search, people are so hung up on needing to be able to recruit Chicago. That isn't necessarily the case. -

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but while I would like someone who can bring in the Jabbari Parker's of the world, aren't we actually looking for the next Bill Self here? Self, off the top of my head, only landed 3 CPL guys while at Illinois, none of whom were highly regarded: Luther, Brock and Aaron Spears (I acknowledge that Self did in fact land Collins and Wright while at Kansas, but the Illinois point remains). You can have consistently competitive teams at Illinois relying on the suburbs and downstate. If you can bring someone in with national ties (like Self) and put other states in play, isn't that the homerun? As a result, you should be looking for young, personable, with strong recruiting ties somewhere. I don't know who that guy is, but I'll give Mike Thomas leeway to find that guy. One final point: could Chris Collins land some kids out of the CPL? Why not? I don't remember who the lead recruiter was on Sean Dockery, but Duke managed to land him. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 9, 2012 -> 10:21 AM) Come back to Carbondale please. #pipedream That would be a great landing spot for Weber. Nice guy, ran a clean program, and coached the best team in Illinois history. Both sides needed a fresh start. Hopefully the new coach can keep everyone, maintain the 2013 commits, and quickly establish relationships with the loaded 2013 and 2014 classes in Illinois. -
QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Mar 6, 2012 -> 11:48 PM) I always wonder what the atmosphere is like at the "power conference" tournaments. Is it really a big deal? I go to the MVC tournament every year and that is pretty much every teams real championship right there. I don't get the feeling that the Big Ten tourney is the same way when teams like OSU and MSU have National title hopes. Am I wrong? I don't think there's the same level of urgency among fans as there might be at the MVC tournament for the reason you stated above. That doesn't mean that the conference tournament isn't a big deal for the fans that show up. There are generally bubble and seeding implications to all the games which helps make the atmosphere in the arena pretty solid. Additionally, conference rivalries make games interesting (remember that every Purdue fan is going to be a fan of Penn State, Wisconsin, or anyone else that plays IU). Indy provides lots of access to players and coaches. Since all the fans and teams stay within a couple block radius of the fieldhouse, there are lots of opportunities to run into players and coaches. Plus, in Indy each school has a designated "bar" around the stadium (poor Northwestern had McCormick and Schmidt the last couple years) so there are lots of opportunities to interact with other alumni. Again, solid event.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Mar 6, 2012 -> 05:27 PM) Eh, I think it's definitely an advantage, but not as much as it's made out to be. The biggest advantage to playing at Assembly Hall is how many students/how loud they are, and even a pro-IU crowd in Indy is nowhere near that level. I think the bigger advantage is just being close to home from a comfort perspective (but even that's negated, because they stay in a hotel in Indy the whole time). I've been to the BTT the last 3 years (first time I'm not getting an all-session pass in that time - I wonder why that is). My thought is that the crowd will be pretty pro-IU. In the past, the crowd has been loud and pro-IU even when they were the 11 seed toiling away in the late game Thursday night (note, it's probably easier for IU to draw well on a Thursday since I assume more people come in from out of town for the weekend games). Given how well IU has fed off their crowd at home this year, I think it will be an advantage. As an aside, I have been to the BTT in Indy and in Chicago, and I'm an Illinois fan, and Indy puts on a better overall event than Chicago. The BTT is THE event in Indy that weekend while it's just another event in Chicago. Chicago probably has better attendance figures (greater alumni base for all the schools), but Indy puts on a great event.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 11:47 PM) Anyone ever tried beer from Black Acre Brewing? Do yourself a favor, click I am UNDER 21 Black Acre is about 4 blocks from my house. They opened last Wednesday and have not started serving their own stuff yet (should be happening by the end of March). They had a tasting a few months back while cutting through the licensing red tape and it's pretty good. I can provide a better report when I start filling growlers there. As an aside, Two Brothers had done a nice job entering the Indy market. I can find it at a couple different liquor stores and a surprising number of places have it on tap.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 20, 2012 -> 02:32 PM) I did basically the same thing with my Great Dane pup when I first started leaving him...I left his crate open and then had a playpen type thing set up with toys and then some puppy pads. He did pretty well with just going on the pads. Then pretty soon he learned how to get out of the pen and surprisingly didn't really do anything bad except some minor chewing on the furniture, which I was prepared to tolerate. He picked up the potty training pretty well and when he did go, I realized it was because he just really had to go and I wasn't home to let him out. I wasn't able to come home at lunch like you are and so I actually hired someone to come visit with him for a half hour or so. I don't think the play area is a bad idea as long as he learns to go on those pads. If he doesn't, it might be better to just keep him in the crate like Jenks said. Either way, just realize you chose a VERY ACTIVE dog. It is imperative that you EXERCISE the hell out of him. I'm not sure if he is fully vaccinated yet, but once he is, find a big dog park and take him there to run run run. This will help the barking and his general sense of restlessness. The most important thing for any dog - probably as much or more than diet, is proper exercise. You'll be amazed at how the proper amount of exercise will help you in every other facet of life with him. He hasn't figured out what the pads are for yet. In fact, he actually thinks they are chew toys. The barking has ONLY been an issue when he is put in his crate and the latch shuts. We have a fenced in backyard and the little guy loves tearing around out there. I have been devoting the vast majority of my time at home to exercising him. At this point, about an hour of consistent running turns into three hours of naptime. I think he really just hates being left alone... He gets his final vaccinations next Monday and there is a big dog park down the street from our house. I'm also looking forward to taking him running with me, but I know that won't happen until he's at least a year old. Any thoughts on leash training young pups? As always, thank you for the advice; the pet thread is amazing.

Thanks to everyone on the board for their insights on my new pup. I forgot how difficult and stressful a new pup is (he makes up for it by being really freaking cute). Both my fiance and I are professionals. She worked from home last week to help the pup adjust. I live close enough to work that I can get home at lunch to let the little man out until he's old enough for doggy daycare. We have his crate in the living room and set up an exercise pen (6x6) outside the crate to give him a play area. Lined the pen space with puppy pads to try to minimize the damage from the inevitable accidents. Today was the first day with this arrangement. I came home at lunch and he had a couple accidents on the floor. I'm not overly concerned by the accidents because, well, he's a 9 week old puppy. The biggest issue seems to be that, with the sole exception of bedtime, when he's left in the crate, even if one of us is home, he barks until he makes himself sick. I've been feeding him in the crate and he goes in and out of the crate on his own so it's not the crate that's bugging him; it's the separation. He just freaks out when the crate latch clicks (again, with the sole exception of bedtime). Any suggestions on how to handle that adjustment? My other question is, should I not put up the exercise pen during the day? Putting the pen up was our way of acknowledging that accidents are going to happen in the 4 hours he's home alone in the morning and afternoon and that it will be more comfortable for him if the accident is outside the crate. I know he can hold it for 4+ hours because he does so at night and when he's napping during the day. But he's not used to me working and his biological clock hasn't figured out that someone will be home at noon everyday... Long winded, I know...

Our Vizsla pup, who we picked up last Saturday, apparently has fleas. And our two cats, who apparently have been eating the fleas, now have worms. We got the topical treatments from the vet for both the cats and the pup (and the cats got the pills for dealing with the worms) and I know we need to do a pretty thorough cleaning of the house to get rid of any and all fleas. Has anyone else dealt with the flea issue before? What do we need to do to make sure they don't come back? What products have people had sucess with?
