Legitimate chance of Sale trade to #Nationals per Rosenthal
bighurt574 replied to DirtySox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 11:38 AM) Because pitching wins in the playoffs. WAR means nothing after October 1st. The stat doesn't, but 7 WAR players sure do. If that's what they think they have in Turner, they're not going to trade him plus top prospects for Sale. -
Legitimate chance of Sale trade to #Nationals per Rosenthal

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 11:28 AM) Turner is a condition precedent to trade talk with the Nationals involving Sale. If he isn't, then it's - " thank you for calling but I have Dave Dumbrowski on the other line." Then you're never going to get a deal done. Turner just put up 3.5 WAR in a half season and is under control for six more years. Why would the Nats trade him and then some for Sale? -
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 08:03 AM) Can someone with Insider please summarize? Basically that some in the organization think mechanics and injuries will catch up with him. Some comparisons to Lincecum from rival evaluators. Not the most positive article when you're trying to trade a guy.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2016 -> 04:00 PM) The value of Adam Eaton versus McCutchen being significant, might be a significant understatement. Perhaps, at least if you go by last year's numbers. Eaton just doesn't have the same star quality or ceiling as McCutchen (who is still just 30). That shouldn't really matter, but I still can't see a franchise cleaning out a strong farm system for Eaton (though he's certainly worth more than McCutchen). Might as well go after Sale if you're willing to give all that up.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2016 -> 03:28 PM) If there is already talk about Robles being included in a deal for McCutchen, why wouldn't the price for Eaton be significantly higher? One, it's "talk." Two, for adding in a top 5 prospect, "significantly" may be an understatement.
-
I'd take that in a heartbeat, but no way the Nats offer two top 10 prospects and then some for Eaton. It would probably have to be Giolito or Robles plus whatever else.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 2, 2016 -> 01:24 PM) We still need to field a team next year, keep that in mind You might even be better off trading Sale now, and keeping guys like Robertson and Frazier to see if they have strong seasons and flip them at the deadline to a contender? The return for a Frazier rental if he has a strong season could be considerable If we're truly in all-out rebuild mode, there's nothing wrong with tanking for a year or two and adding a few top draft picks to whatever prospect haul we can get for guys like Sale, Q, Eaton, etc. That said, I doubt the sell off is that drastic.
-
I think we can get a solid package, but I don't really see teams paying up for Eaton like a franchise-changing player.
-
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 11:31 AM) Cutch's numbers are way down. Would be surprised if they gave up Robles & Giolito for him. Doesn't sound like Giolito is in play here.

The entire goal of trading Sale is to improve the team in the long run. If the Cubs put together the package that gives you the best shot of doing that, it's silly to turn them down just because they're the Cubs. All that tells me is that you're not all that confident in your scouting and evaluations in the first place and you're scared about it blowing up in your face. If you do your job, you're the one coming out ahead in the long run, or at least equal if it's a trade that truly helps both teams. That said, I think the Cubs are out because they're not a match. The just won a WS and already have a strong, deep rotation (at least for 2017). They don't need to be giving up major pieces from their MLB roster/WS team. And I don't think they have the prospects to get a deal done without that.
-
I said this in another thread, but it's entirely possible the Sox just don't think they match up with the Cubs, if the Cubs aren't willing to deal certain younger guys off their major league roster. If the Cubs actually made a big / the best offer on a guy like Sale, I have a hard time believing the Sox would say no just because they're the Cubs.

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 01:06 PM) The goal is not to trade for Heyward because he's good - it's the opposite. It's essentially taking on salary to allow us to get even more of their great players. Not dissimilar to when you retain salary to get more prospects. You wouldn't consider it for Baez, Schwarber, Soler, and our pick of 3-4 prospects? Wow. The Cubs would never do that deal.
-
If Jerry wants to win now, buy like he means it and add a big, middle of the order bat (granted, not many out there for sale). With Rodon developing, I certainly see the appeal of going with a Sale-Q-Rodon trio for another year. And hope 2nd half Abreu shows up next April. If we're not willing to spend the $$$ to seriously contend, then you have to look at trading Sale and/or Q.
-
If Rodon keeps pitching like this, along with Sale and Q, it's sure tempting to not shake things up for next year (besides hopefully adding a bat or two). Heck, if August Rodon and Abreu stick around, we could even contend....
-
My guess is they approach the offseason like 2017 is still the last in a three-year window to compete. They go out and add a few more average pieces to try to paper over the holes from this year. And if it doesn't work, they raise the white flag and are big time sellers at the 2017 trade deadline. If they get an offer they can't refuse on Sale or Q in the offseason though, with some MLB-ready pieces they can plug right into the lineup, they pull the trigger.
-
Well, they acquired him on a three year deal, and nothing has really changed since then other than falling out of contention this year. He was seemingly part of their plans for 2017 and 2018.
-
If Shields is a pure salary dump, they might as well keep him. After the rough start, he's basically pitching as well as they likely expected. Why dump the guy, unless 2017 is a complete rebuild year? If he keeps pitching well, he probably has a bit of surplus value (taking into account the SD money).
-
He'll be put on waivers, but if you put in a claim, they may just give him to you at this point. I wonder if the Sox were trying to work a deal for some small piece in exchange for LA eating some of his salary. That's my best guess.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 1, 2016 -> 10:50 PM) Yeah over the past 30 games he's hitting .301 with an .800 ops. You can slice and dice it a lot of different ways. Over the past 28 days, he's hitting .255 with an .674 OPS, and has only started twice in the past two weeks. If he was raking it right now, they probably wouldn't have cut his AB's and then demoted him, attitude issues aside.
-
Eh, I'd only take him if he clears waivers and the Dodgers eat some of his salary. But I could see us putting in a waiver claim. Seems like a total KW move.
-
Is he worth paying $8M in 2017 and $9M in 2018? A bit of a gamble. Not sure I'd even put in a claim.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Aug 1, 2016 -> 03:28 PM) Its not just Sale, I don't think anyone minds the idea of holding Sale and Q to the winter. Its keeping guys like Frazier, Cabrera, Robertson, Shields, and Gonzalez, guys that have their values enhanced by teams being in win now mode and the limited availability of assets. Those are the guys you need to get deals for. The market for closers and the releif market in general has been insane, and the Sox failed to capitalize. The Yankees just pulled in a pitcher drafter 1.4 last year for two months of 39 yo Carlos Beltran. There were plenty of deals to be made. The FO did nothing to improve the future (long and short term) of this team. Those guys are generally under contract for next year. They obviously plan to try to compete again in 2017. We'll see how that one works out. I'm certainly skeptical.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 1, 2016 -> 02:56 PM) This is f***ing ridiculous. Absolutely unacceptable to not move any of Robertson, Shields, Gonzalez, Melky, & Frazier. Get ready for a few off season tweaks and taking one more run at it in 2017. If they actually found another big bat somewhere, and the old Abreu came back, maybe it works, but otherwise we'll be in this exact same spot a year from now.
-
It would be fascinating to know what's been offered, and what we've asked.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 1, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) Bob Nightengale @BNightengale 19s19 seconds ago The Chicago #Whitesox say that unless something dramatically changes, will keep Chris Sale and Jose Quintana. Sounds like a last call to get someone (BOS?) to up the ante.
