  1. QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) As much as I like Beckham and I agree that he is the best player on the Sox right now, don't compare him to Pujols. Pujols is in a league of his own. Relax. I only mentioned Pujols as an example of consistency after a strong rookie year. Beckham is no Pujols, and apart from some jokes, no one here thinks Beckham is as good as Pujols (I think).
  2. QUOTE (joeynach @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 01:36 AM) Well so far my theory is being proven correct. On Tuesday night June 23rd against the dodgers, a Prime priced game, the sox drew 22,251 fans. Tonite the sox drew 30,228 fans on their promotion of reduced ticket prices for some tickets as well as perfect game commerative plaques being given away. Its working. Although the Buehrle theme gave the team an excuse to lower ticket prices (I buy into that), your theory assumes that the lower ticket prices are the only reason for the increased attendance. I'm not convinced that's the case. One, at least some fans probably did "fall for" the Buehrle theme. Two, there could be other factors at play -- i.e. it's August and the team is right in contention; coming off a good series against NY; excitement about the Peavy trade; excitement about a certain ROY candidate; etc. In other words, in going from the "control" to the "experimental" group, the price isn't the only factor that has changed.
  3. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) ...check out Jeff Francouer's rookie stats and remember how people were so ga-ga over him too... .300/.336/.549/.885 70 GP, 272 AB, 14 HR, 20 2B, 1 3B, 45 RBI, 11BB it would seem like the lack of walks and reliance on homers made this predictable, but Francoeur was hitting .300 over 70 games with a ton of doubles...doesn't that sound familiar? His career line is currently a disappointing .266/.308/.424/.732 and the power numbers have been relatively down since 06 - just 82 career homers. So what happened to Jeff Francouer? Couldn't the same thing happen to Beckham? You can pick examples from both sides of the fence. I think everyone understands that. Beckham could become the next Jerome Walton, or, at least in terms of consistency, the next Albert Pujols. That's what's great about baseball.
  4. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 4, 2009 -> 09:26 PM) My point should have been the following, said more simply: I dont want my cleanup hitter's best attribute to be drawing walks. Why not? Should Thome move up to #3 in the order then? I fail to see how drawing walks is a bad thing. If nothing else, it just means more guys on base for the #5 guy, Konerko, who seems fully capable of driving in runs.
  5. So, to summarize, even though the trade will likely look good over the next few years, it's really bad? I don't get it.
  6. Getz is having a solid rookie season, and I expect he'll get even better over the next few years and be a very solid 2B for us. Still, he doesn't seem to have ROY or future All-Star potential. We'll see.
  7. The really impressive thing to me so far is that he's not trying to be something he's not (as of now at least) by trying too hard to hit HR's. He's perfectly content lacing line drives all over the place.
  8. QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 10:32 PM) Considering this came from a CR press release, I think this was probably a promotional thing. I'm sure there's more to come. No kidding. This is obviously an endorsement deal, not a gift (from some of the posts on here, CR seems to have accomplished its purpose).
  9. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 10:39 AM) Just split the doubleheader today and split the 4 game series. If we get out of the war zone that is Detroit tied for first place and with all of our players in tact, I will be happy. With the way the two teams are playing right now, I'm hoping for 3 out of 4.
  10. You guys have it all wrong. Wise should buy MB something. Without MB's performance today, no one outside Chicago would even know Wise existed.
  11. Wise leading off, nice. How often do you see a guy make a great catch and then lead off the next inning...
  12. I didn't post the 2007 link to suggest he's lying now. I don't think he is. But he's not exactly as straightforward and honest as the essay portrays (i.e. how he volunteered to the kids that he took HGH).
  13. Nice read. Too bad he wasn't so honest in 2007: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/P...p;date=20071213 Despite being listed in the report as having purchased two shipments of human growth hormone in 2003 from former New York Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski, Parque insisted today that he only bought creatine and other supplements he believed to be legal. "I know I went through another [Class AAA] player with the Devil Rays and he said he'd get me some stuff,'' Parque said. "But it wasn't human growth hormone or anything like that.''
  14. Toronto is going to have to come down or they won't find a trade partner. Halladay's trade value is really only the difference between his market value and what's left on his contract. In this economy, that's certainly something, but it's not enough to cause a team to gut its future for 1.5 years of an ace pitcher on a $15 million/year contract. When you take their respective contracts into account, I fail to see how Halladay's trade value is all that different from Peavy's -- Halladay is probably the better pitcher, but Peavy is under control for another year.
  15. Well, if the Sox and Twins end up tied, no one can complain b/c each team lost a game based on a bad call at home plate (actually, I guess the Twins got screwed less, that run would have just tied the game).
  16. The only justification for Wise over Anderson is speed for pinch running. With Quentin back, we certainly have our fair share of guys who can't run -- Quentin, Thome, Konerko. Apparently, Kenny valued that over other qualities (i.e. defense) at this point in time. Don't worry, this will all seem worthwhile when Wise pinch runs and easily scores from first on a double to win us a game in the 9th inning against Detroit. Oh, wait.
  17. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) haha thats why i went and edited it. Not the best choice of words but for the trade we are talking about. If he hauls a front-line ace like doc then that is exactly what he is. EXPANDABLE. I dont see him getting moved but ive had thoughts. Maybe it's because I had high hopes for that this offseason and didnt expect us to be 1.5 out. This offseason though you'll see him moved. Um, you might want to look up the meanings of expandable vs. expendable.
  18. Is it really a surprise that Richard is still in the rotation? I think we all know that Colon will take his spot back as soon as he's ready, but he's obviously not ready yet. The only other viable option is Poreda, and although I'd ultimately like to see Poreda get a shot, everyone knew it wasn't going to be immediately.
  19. As long as the Sox can find Colon and/or Poreda, either of them should be starting over Richards right now.
  20. QUOTE (wilmot825 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 11:09 PM) The question isn't what can KW get for Gobble?, it should be Why do the Indians want Gobble? It makes sense to why Cleveland is in last. Have you seen Cleveland's bullpen?
  21. If Toronto is going to require a package involving Beckham, Danks, Alexei, etc., the Sox should back off. Halladay for $15 million a year for a year and a half would be nice, but I'd rather keep our young, proven talent and just spend that $22 million in free agency.
  22. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 10:36 AM) Having been to seven games already this year, which is low by my standards, I'd personally like to tell KW to shove it. I average 20-30 games per year (40 in '05) and one thing I've noticed is that the park has grown less fan-friendly year after year, price-wise. Of course we have the insulting tier system, where an April game against KC is $33 for bleachers but of course for the Cubs they're magically $40 for the same seat. Granted the Cubs series is always a sellout but then to make the LA series premium?!?!? In the middle of the week? No wonder you got 20,000 fans only. And of course, beer prices up, parking up, everything up, up, up even when we knew going into the season that the economy was the worst in my lifetime. Half-price promotions few and far between... really, this is all a mystery to KW? Really? Add to that the Sox didn't exactly get off to a rousing start (although looking much better now) and we have our mystery solved here. If the Sox were more flexible as an organization they would realized going into the season that with the economy they could work on the fly and make the Sox a budget-saving alternative to the Cubs or other activities... drop the ticket prices, offer family packages, realize that a full park with discounted tix is better than a half-empty one at premium prices. But none of that happened. And yet you whine about "support" when you've offered none in these dismal economic times. Sit down and STFU. All true, but the Sox are hardly alone in any of these respects.
  23. Hopefully he shows up on Thursday. Before this episode, I don't really get why everyone has been so tough on him. The Sox got him for $1 million, and he gave us some quality starts. Even if he's cut tomorrow, we got our money's worth.
  24. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 06:40 AM) I didn't learn about this trade until late last night. And the first thing that popped into my head was that I'm 100% certain that all of Soxtalk is going absolutely apes*** right about now. And after reading through this thread, you guys certainly didn't disappoint. First of all, who the hell is anybody from this god damn message board to say with absolute certainty (or even 50% certainty) that the Sox "could've gotten more" for Brandon f***in' Allen? Unless you can find a direct quote from any one of the 28 other general managers in baseball clearly stating they would've traded the Sox a lot more than Tony Pena for Brandon Allen then please, with all due respect, STFU! Because all you do is make yourself look and sound incredibly stupid. I like this board overall. But the ignorance/arrogance around here at times is simply incomprehensible. Unless your JPN or Scenario or BHAMBARONS and you happen to live close by one of our minor league affiliates or you're a subscriber to MILB.com, most of you have never seen a single f***ing live Brandon Allen at-bat. And that includes me. s***, I love to track prospects. But I have no first-hand knowledge about any of these guys. All I can do is go by stats, scouting reports, ect. Yet we've got message board "experts" around here on their f***ing high horses acting like they know more than guys that get PAID FOR A LIVING to scout and break these guys down? Get the f*** outta here. Brandon Allen for the most part appears to be a solid prospect. He could be really good, bad or somewhere inbetween. Who knows? And we won't know for a while. So let's stop acting like we traded away the next Ryan Howard. I'll second (or third) that. This board is way too attached to mediocre prospects (which is most of them, sorry). Kenny traded a B-level prospect for a decent and cheap reliever with some upside. Pena will be in our bullpen long after Dotel and probably Linebrink are gone. This trade helps marginally for 2009, and potentially a lot for 2010 and after.
  25. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 06:24 AM) On paper we should dominate tonight...on paper. Let's get our mojo back and be in first by the all-star break. Mark is our slumpbuster, go get 'em. Tonight would be a nice night for Beckham, Nix, Fields rounding out the bottom of the order. And although Castro went yard last time against him, I still want AJ in there. The whole series looks real good on paper -- Cleveland, at home, skipping Lee and Pavano? We should be racking up wins.
