When people raise signability concerns with Thompson, what kind of $$$ are we talking about?

If Konerko can't go... Who should come up?

If we keep losing anyway, bring back Big Frank, it'll sell a (very) few tickets. -
Boras wants $50M signing bonus for Strasburg!?
bighurt574 replied to bschmaranz's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:56 PM) The guy pretty much always gets what he wants, his head seems to work just fine. I hate the way he operates, always trying to find loopholes in the system to exploit, but he is really awesome at what he does Except for Manny, I guess. Someone on baseball tonight had a pretty good idea -- take a similar approach to the Dodgers and Manny -- offer Strasburg a record-setting contract right off the bat that is also pretty close to a best and final offer, say around $15 million, and leave it to Boras to reject it if he wants. Boras can come up with all of these "comparables" but if no one is buying them he's just talking to himself. -
Why would the Sox release Colon? I know he's coming off a bad start, but he seems to be earning his minimal $1 million salary. What were people expecting out of him, a Cy Young season? If you would have told me at the start of the season he'd have a 4.23 ERA through 11 starts, I'd be esctatic (yes, I know some of his other #'s are troubling).

QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 12:15 PM) Why now? If there are going to be trades, it would be to restructure the Sox with hopes of contending this year. It would be a shake up kick in the pants deal. If it would be to dump salary or acquire young talent, why not wait until closer to the deadline? Not saying a trade is imminent, but in theory: (1) The earlier the trade, the more salary you can dump. (2) The earlier the trade, the more young talent you might be able to acquire (i.e. a team may pay more for a 4-month rental than a 2-month rental).

QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:12 AM) Teams don't go into fire-sale mode when they're 4.5 games out in June. But I don't want to take the fun out of the thread, so I'll just shut up. I don't think anyone is saying that we're in fire-sale mode right now. But, if we continue to play sluggish, we could easily find outselves 7-8+ games out in the next few weeks (or days), at which point we could certainly be sellers in the trade market.

Article on the decline of baseball card collecting
bighurt574 replied to smalls2598's topic in The Diamond Club
The industry blew it, but I also don't think it's a coincidence that the fall of baseball cards coincided with the rise of computers and the internet. To a large degree, pieces of cardboard with a picture and a few stats are an outdated medium and just aren't going to appeal as much to today's generation of kids. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 05:10 PM) Why is it you would have to "pursuade" a player to get traded to a good franchise that actually WANTS you for the long term. s***, one of his good friends plays here, and that still did nothing. I don't place all the blame on Peavy -- he gave the Padres a hometown discount, and got a no-trade clause in exchange. So, he gets to say that he's not willing to give that same deal to the Sox. (MB's contract is certainly structured so it would be more expensive for other teams to acquire him). I don't have a huge problem with that. I do kind of doubt he'll find a better deal anywhere else.

QUOTE (DanksFan @ May 21, 2009 -> 05:06 PM) heyman one bad sign late in the game on peavy: #white sox were asked by #padres: "you got any ideas on how to persuade him?'' How about the Padres demoting him to the bullpen for mop up work? Keep him healthy for future deals that way too.
-
If KW spent 11 months on this deal, I wouldn't expect him to go away quietly. I would expect we might remain a player for Peavy if his other suitors never materialize. The price we'd be willing to give the Padres would almost certainly drop during that time though.

Interesting column, blaming the Padres, not Peavy, for the situation. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9598700...-served-to-wait

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) The Padres really don't have money to be kicking in right now, otherwise they wouldn't be doing this in the first place. Maybe. With this deal, they're saving ~ $8 million this year and $52 million over the three years after that. If they were desperate to unload the contract, they could certainly kick in at least a few million, the owner's divorce notwithstanding.

QUOTE (beck72 @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) From Jon Heyman's SI article, http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/base...rade/index.html it sounds like Peavy wants to get his NTC waived for the rest of the contract, and get his option picked up. Can't blame him. It would be hard for Peavy to turn the sox down with all the concessions. Esp. as Peavy could be moved in 2011 w/o his consent. This sounds optimistic to me. "The Padres appear disinclined to provide any major financial inducements to motivate Peavy to accept the deal. Axelrod has suggested in the past that if Peavy were traded, he would like the no-trade clause to be extended through the 2011 and 2012 seasons (in his current contract, it ends after 2010). Although Axelrod said he hasn't spoken to Peavy about the no-trade extension recently, he reiterated that his client's feelings likely remain the same." I guess we'll see who is more motivated to get this deal done, the Sox or the Padres. Either could kick in some of that option money to placate Peavy.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) is this being reported or your guess? Because right now, not one dime of that 22m is guaranteed, so if he can get 17m guaranteed and some deferred, it's not the worst deal for him Technically, isn't $4M guaranteed?
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) There is an agreement. We all have known that since 6 or 7am. That's between two parties who now have no control. There is an agreement in place between the Padres and the Sox. Now, Peavy and the Sox need to reach an agreement. I agree with the others, if the two sides are down to nitty gritty contract details, that's probably a good sign. But, if they're still apart on whether or not to exercise an $18M option, that's still a pretty big gap.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) As someone who thinks the White Sox have been very cheap this season, and knowing if Peavy is outstanding for 3 1/2 years in Chicago that $22 million would be fair, to just guarantee it now is not smart. What if he gets hurt? What if he turns into Barry Zito? Stranger things have happened. If it were a hitter, that's one thing, but JR has been correct on his 3 year contracts for pitchers. He's extended to 4 recently with a couple of guys, but if they keep doing it, they will get burned, and $22 million would be a horrific burn. It's a risk, no doubt. But if we're not willing to take that risk, we're never going to land an ace pitcher, and it doesn't appear that we have any in our farm system. I'm not saying we should take the Yankee approach to pitching, but overall, Peavy's contract is actually pretty reasonable for a pitcher of his calibre.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:38 PM) Pitching wins, but to guarantee a $22 million option 4 years from now is insane. If he doesn't want to be here, let him go to play for the Cubbies, I'm already sick of it, although if Broadway is involved ....................................... $22 million 4 years from now is a lot (it's really $18 million, $4 million is already a sunk cost), but: (1) you're getting 3/4 year at $11 million prorated, which is way below market; and (2) you're getting 3 years at $16 million average, which is still likely below market, and not all that different from MB's contract. When you look at the overall contract, it's reasonable for a pitcher like Peavy, especially when you compare it to the contracts that other "aces" have received recently. If we have to overpay a bit for year 5, I'm ok with it. I imagine the Sox are comfortable with his elbow, or the trade wouldn't have gotten this far.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Maybe they really are trying to get us to accept his option years. If I was Peavy and/or his agent, I'd certainly give it a shot. Why not? Anyone know, is it an all-or-nothing sort of deal on the option? Could the two sides compromise, and say, just agree to guarantee more of the money for that year or raise the buyout? I imagine the AL concerns are at least a bit of a negotiating tactic.
-
QUOTE (Sockin @ May 21, 2009 -> 12:29 PM) FWIW, Axelrod hasn't spoken to Peavy since yesterday afternoon. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/base...sox.trade.0200/ Does anyone really believe that? Please.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 12:06 PM) Yeah, I have no idea where people think they saw the trade was dead. Peavy wants to pitch in the NL? No s***, that's all we heard for the entire offseason. Hell, he probably just woke up a few hours ago, as the Padres were home last night. His agent is saying he doesn't think Peavy will accept a deal to the AL, at least not now. I don't think his agent, or any agent, would just make casual statements to the media for no reason. The two have talked, let's not be naive. Peavy is either saying no, or his agent is trying to create some leverage -- either for the Sox to pick up the option year, or to get other teams involved. Either way, it doesn't sound like a deal is imminent.

QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:32 AM) The San Diego Padres have agreed to trade staff ace Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox and are waiting for Peavy to decide if he will waive his no-trade clause, sources tell ESPN. Apparently according to Gammons, all pitching, no Beckham involvement -Cubs suck Wow, thanks for breaking this.
-
This is strange. I know this guy broke the story last night, but all other media outlets have supposedly confirmed that a deal is already in place pending Peavy's approval. I wonder if Peavy is rejecting the deal, but to save face for the Sox, they'll try to say there was never a deal in the first place.
-
I think Obama needs to make a call to Peavy...
-
I assume Peavy would be asking the Sox to pick up his option year.
