QUOTE (TheCut87 @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 09:49 PM) Maybe 27 mil per year.... There is no way that the White Sox are offering Cespedes $27M per season, even on a shorter term deal. No way.

QUOTE (South Sider @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 09:12 PM) "This just puts them in a position to compete with us". This really changes the landscape for Cespedes. He has every reason to expect a similar deal, at this point, and I doubt the Sox give it to him. Even though I agree that this is a pretty dumb deal for Detroit, it further exacerbates a problem we are all too familiar with; that the White Sox will not pay open market price for a premium player. Cespedes will get his money from someone and we will be left with Fowler or Jackson. I know I said I was warming up to the idea of Jackson, but with KC retaining Gordon and Detroit nabbing Upton in an already tough division.... I mean seriously how the hell are you going to expect to compete!? You need someone who is a run producer in the outfield and that is Cespedes. Jackson and Fowler are okay players on an already elite team, but they will not push this team over the top. Good point. Davis (7 years), Upton (6 years?) and Gordon (4 years) all got multi-year deals. I'm not exactly sure who these teams are bidding against (specifically in the Davis contract), but I don't understand why Cespedes wouldn't get at least get a 4 year deal, and probably 5-6 years.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 09:00 PM) Your move, Jerry Reinsdorf. It's hard to make an argument that as things stand today, despite our 3 young/cost-controlled aces at the front of the rotation, we're NOT still likely a 4th or 5th place team. If Minnesota can get another starting pitcher, they might actually be the most dangerous team in the AL Central, but Sano still has to follow up his impressive debut and adjust to the pitchers this time around. Buxton has to stay healthy and put up at least a 700 OPS. Mike Illitch....balls (or, more accurately, a bank vault) of steel. It certainly feels like the White Sox can't be done adding to next year's team....if they are 'all in'. As much as the Lawrie and Frazier (in paritcular) should help, that is NOT what you think when you're all in unless they either do have a tight budget for the upcoming season and/or believe the in-house talent will rebound and don't have to do as much.

'16 Sox will be much improved without other moves

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 05:39 PM) Scott Merkin @scottmerkin 28m28 minutes ago Merkin: Even without further moves, '16 White Sox should be decidedly improved: http://atmlb.com/1SsDc8Q via @mlb I don't think Merkin would tell you if the White Sox were going to be bad. I'm frustrated by the direction of this team. Are they 'all in' or not? If they were, they would have a legitimate #4 hitter on this lineup. Frazier and Lawrie are nice additions, and the offense is better, but I envision these two as #5 and #6 or even #7 (in Lawrie's case). I think they are smart to not give a free agent a 6 or 7 year deal, and I am in favor of reloading the minor league system, however, they are trying to do both at the same time. There is still time, and maybe they add Upton/Cespedes or make some addition that moves Cabrera out of the #2 spot and into the middle of the lineup (that could help, but he's not that type of run producer either), but pick a lane. Pitching wise, they are set although the #3-#5 spots are still questions to me. We know the probably names (Rodon, Johnson and Danks), but the expectations are so high for Rodon to break out. Will he deliver? They probably aren't a contender without 3 very good pitchers. Johnson and Danks just need to give innings and hopefully keep teams in the game. Bullpen will probably be good, not elite. Bottom line - they don't have enough hitting. At the moment, this is .500 type team. Add a #4 hitter and get good starting pitching, they can challenge -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2016 -> 07:47 AM) You mean a draft pick? Then the answer is yes. Sorry, yes a draft pick. I really hope they avoid signing players if they are going to lose draft picks. They need to make rebuilding that minor league system a TOP priority as much as trying to compete in the majors. They have already traded some talent, now it's time to replenish as much as they can. I like Fowler, but not for a draft pick.

QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:43 AM) If SD signs Lexi, where does that leave Desmond option-wise? Maybe to the Sox, and then we sign a FA outfielder not named Cespedes that doesn't require a pick ? If we could recoup the lost pick for Desmond after 2016, maybe...? Do the White Sox lose a free agent if they sign Desmond or Fowler?

Fangraphs projects CWS at 81-81, 4GB in ALC

QUOTE (shysocks @ Jan 12, 2016 -> 10:13 AM) Don't remember exactly but I think most systems had us between 76 and 80 wins. I feel like 2/3 of the teams are between 75 and 82 wins. Maybe that's how it actually turns our or I'm wrong,. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 12, 2016 -> 10:02 AM) http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings Proected ALC Indians 85-77 White Sox 81-81 Royals 79-83 Tigers 79-83 Twins 78-84 The records of teams in these predictions, even teams they are predicting to win the division, are always awful. Does anyone really think all 5 teams will be separated by 7 games in the standings? -
Sure sounds like plenty of teams are still considering making a splash on either Upton/Cespedes (Baltimore, Texas, Mets, Red Sox, Tigers) to go with the White Sox. Have any other teams been mentioned?
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 05:00 PM) 3 years/31 million for Span, plus incentives Wasn't this guy supposedly have to work out for teams? Now he gets a 3 year, 31 million deal? I do like Span, but I was expecting a 1 year deal for 6-8 million a season. Guess I was way off. Makes me wonder if we'll end up seeing much of a discount, if any, for some of the remaining free agents if teams are bidding against themselves.

If Gordon got $18M a year, is this expected to the be 'cheapest' deals of the 3 OF's?
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:11 AM) Do you really believe that they do though? I don't. Nightengale reported that the White Sox weren't going beyond 3 years for any of these free agents. That seems to be true in regards to Gordon.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:06 AM) How many teams offered Gordon 4 years other than KC? What are the current offers for Cespedes? What are the offers for Upton? What was the Sox best offer for Gordon? If you answered I really don't know to these questions, any whining about the White Sox and how they are NEGOTIATING currently with free agents is premature. That could be a reasonable position to take in terms of Gordon, but what if the White Sox have this same standard for Cespedes or Upton?
-
I'd overpay on a 1 year deal also.
-
He's a good gamble, if healthy and on a team friendly deal. I wouldn't be upset if the White Sox took a chance on him. At best, he could earn a rotation spot or at least make Erik Johnson do so.
-
QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:48 PM) We all want one of these OF's, but with the new reports out there from people we absolutely trust, especially Nightengale, I like the Sox waiting for the market to come to them. Would make sense; the market is working to their advantage at the moment.
-
QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:48 PM) Saying he believes they'll sign 1 & saying they aren't close isn't exactly contradicting... It's possible that no team is close to signing these players, but the White Sox have had as many conversations with them as any other team.
-
QUOTE (Knuckles @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:21 PM) Just saw that, looks like it's a waiting game because the market is really not in favor of the players. I bet you Sox have offers made and the OFs are trying to see if someone comes in with a higher offer. Yep, these guys are looking for another team to get involved. Right now, it's the White Sox, Orioles, and maybe another team or two (Angels? Giants?)...I'm sure there's another team involved that I miss, but the point being, there may not be enough interest at the current demands of these players. Where is Chris Davis in all this as well?
-
QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:19 PM) Bob Nightengale just said on MLB Tonight that the White Sox have had "extensive talks" with each of the 3 top OF'ers. Says he expects them to land one & named Cespedes a decent amount in that conversation. He said, they have been "sitting back" waiting for the prices to drop. Said 2-3 times that he expects a few of these guys to settle for 2-3 years deals but specifically named Upton as a guy that may hold out the longest. I wouldn't mind overpaying (as in 20+) plus on a 3 year deal as opposed to a 5 or 6 year deal at 18M.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 28, 2015 -> 12:10 PM) I don't see the prices dropping that much. I still think Gordon gets at least $18M/per, with Cespedes & Upton in the $20M to $22M range. The benefit should hopefully come on the contract length side. My guess is each guy gets a year less than they were originally hoping for, with Upton getting 6 years, Cespedes getting 5, & Gordon getting 4. Unless these teams are bidding against themselves, I don't see how the prices of these guys don't drop from $20+ to upper teens. I agree with the years that you're predicting.
-
This is a buyer's market. Patience. How many teams are in the hunt for these 3 or 4 OF's that are getting the attention? What once cost $20 million+ is probably down to $16-$18M (or will be soon) so I think the White Sox will eventually dip into the market if they are truly going 'all-in'.

Al-Jazeera links Ryan Howard, Ryan Zimmerman to banned PEDs

No names would shock me. -
QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 02:41 PM) then offer 4 yr and 24 mil per 24 million per year for Gordon? It may not even take 20 if the market for these OF'S is moving the way it's been rumored to be going.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 01:01 PM) Hahn needs to send a message to sox fans. He needs to show his dedication to the job by making a Christmas Day trade. He needs to show he has stones to make a move like that. Sign Upton or Gordon today, you win my respect. A Christmas signing is cold blooded. By all means, let's hope that Rick Hahn is in a Christmas spirit today and makes a big signing!!! Give one of these free agent OF's whatever they want! Who cares if this is becoming a buyer's market! While he's at it, let's trade our entire farm system for Carlos Gonzalez today! Win the WS on Christmas, no matter the cost! Big balls Hahn!

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 11:52 AM) LaRoche is just too old to be productive anymore. Like you said, he can field, but Sox are committed to Abreu at first. LaRoche's fielding DOES NOT MATTER as long as he's with the Sox. One thing is for sure, if LaRoche EVER bats against a lefty, Robin is a fool. Automatic outs do not help you win and he's not getting any hits off lefties. If he puts the ball in play it's an easy out because of the shift and usually he'll not put it in play. If the DH spot is still somewhat in flux (La Roche, Garcia, etc.) by spring training, and La Roche is deemed to still be a good defensive 1B (and better than Abrea defensively), there is no excuse why he shouldn't be playing 2-3 games a week at 1B. There has to be a compromise here that allows the White Sox to improve defensively without Abreu losing his position on the field.
