  1. QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:43 AM) If SD signs Lexi, where does that leave Desmond option-wise? Maybe to the Sox, and then we sign a FA outfielder not named Cespedes that doesn't require a pick ? If we could recoup the lost pick for Desmond after 2016, maybe...? Do the White Sox lose a free agent if they sign Desmond or Fowler?
  2. QUOTE (shysocks @ Jan 12, 2016 -> 10:13 AM) Don't remember exactly but I think most systems had us between 76 and 80 wins. I feel like 2/3 of the teams are between 75 and 82 wins. Maybe that's how it actually turns our or I'm wrong,.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 12, 2016 -> 10:02 AM) http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings Proected ALC Indians 85-77 White Sox 81-81 Royals 79-83 Tigers 79-83 Twins 78-84 The records of teams in these predictions, even teams they are predicting to win the division, are always awful. Does anyone really think all 5 teams will be separated by 7 games in the standings?
  4. Sure sounds like plenty of teams are still considering making a splash on either Upton/Cespedes (Baltimore, Texas, Mets, Red Sox, Tigers) to go with the White Sox. Have any other teams been mentioned?
  5. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 05:00 PM) 3 years/31 million for Span, plus incentives Wasn't this guy supposedly have to work out for teams? Now he gets a 3 year, 31 million deal? I do like Span, but I was expecting a 1 year deal for 6-8 million a season. Guess I was way off. Makes me wonder if we'll end up seeing much of a discount, if any, for some of the remaining free agents if teams are bidding against themselves.
  6. If Gordon got $18M a year, is this expected to the be 'cheapest' deals of the 3 OF's?
  7. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:11 AM) Do you really believe that they do though? I don't. Nightengale reported that the White Sox weren't going beyond 3 years for any of these free agents. That seems to be true in regards to Gordon.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:06 AM) How many teams offered Gordon 4 years other than KC? What are the current offers for Cespedes? What are the offers for Upton? What was the Sox best offer for Gordon? If you answered I really don't know to these questions, any whining about the White Sox and how they are NEGOTIATING currently with free agents is premature. That could be a reasonable position to take in terms of Gordon, but what if the White Sox have this same standard for Cespedes or Upton?
  9. He's a good gamble, if healthy and on a team friendly deal. I wouldn't be upset if the White Sox took a chance on him. At best, he could earn a rotation spot or at least make Erik Johnson do so.
  10. QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:48 PM) We all want one of these OF's, but with the new reports out there from people we absolutely trust, especially Nightengale, I like the Sox waiting for the market to come to them. Would make sense; the market is working to their advantage at the moment.
  11. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:48 PM) Saying he believes they'll sign 1 & saying they aren't close isn't exactly contradicting... It's possible that no team is close to signing these players, but the White Sox have had as many conversations with them as any other team.
  12. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:21 PM) Just saw that, looks like it's a waiting game because the market is really not in favor of the players. I bet you Sox have offers made and the OFs are trying to see if someone comes in with a higher offer. Yep, these guys are looking for another team to get involved. Right now, it's the White Sox, Orioles, and maybe another team or two (Angels? Giants?)...I'm sure there's another team involved that I miss, but the point being, there may not be enough interest at the current demands of these players. Where is Chris Davis in all this as well?
  13. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:19 PM) Bob Nightengale just said on MLB Tonight that the White Sox have had "extensive talks" with each of the 3 top OF'ers. Says he expects them to land one & named Cespedes a decent amount in that conversation. He said, they have been "sitting back" waiting for the prices to drop. Said 2-3 times that he expects a few of these guys to settle for 2-3 years deals but specifically named Upton as a guy that may hold out the longest. I wouldn't mind overpaying (as in 20+) plus on a 3 year deal as opposed to a 5 or 6 year deal at 18M.
  14. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 28, 2015 -> 12:10 PM) I don't see the prices dropping that much. I still think Gordon gets at least $18M/per, with Cespedes & Upton in the $20M to $22M range. The benefit should hopefully come on the contract length side. My guess is each guy gets a year less than they were originally hoping for, with Upton getting 6 years, Cespedes getting 5, & Gordon getting 4. Unless these teams are bidding against themselves, I don't see how the prices of these guys don't drop from $20+ to upper teens. I agree with the years that you're predicting.
  15. This is a buyer's market. Patience. How many teams are in the hunt for these 3 or 4 OF's that are getting the attention? What once cost $20 million+ is probably down to $16-$18M (or will be soon) so I think the White Sox will eventually dip into the market if they are truly going 'all-in'.
  16. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 02:41 PM) then offer 4 yr and 24 mil per 24 million per year for Gordon? It may not even take 20 if the market for these OF'S is moving the way it's been rumored to be going.
  17. QUOTE (ron883 @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 01:01 PM) Hahn needs to send a message to sox fans. He needs to show his dedication to the job by making a Christmas Day trade. He needs to show he has stones to make a move like that. Sign Upton or Gordon today, you win my respect. A Christmas signing is cold blooded. By all means, let's hope that Rick Hahn is in a Christmas spirit today and makes a big signing!!! Give one of these free agent OF's whatever they want! Who cares if this is becoming a buyer's market! While he's at it, let's trade our entire farm system for Carlos Gonzalez today! Win the WS on Christmas, no matter the cost! Big balls Hahn!
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 11:52 AM) LaRoche is just too old to be productive anymore. Like you said, he can field, but Sox are committed to Abreu at first. LaRoche's fielding DOES NOT MATTER as long as he's with the Sox. One thing is for sure, if LaRoche EVER bats against a lefty, Robin is a fool. Automatic outs do not help you win and he's not getting any hits off lefties. If he puts the ball in play it's an easy out because of the shift and usually he'll not put it in play. If the DH spot is still somewhat in flux (La Roche, Garcia, etc.) by spring training, and La Roche is deemed to still be a good defensive 1B (and better than Abrea defensively), there is no excuse why he shouldn't be playing 2-3 games a week at 1B. There has to be a compromise here that allows the White Sox to improve defensively without Abreu losing his position on the field.
  19. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 12:58 PM) http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/hitters-no-...k-only-decline/ According to this article, the new peak is 26 years old. Are the White Sox aware of this study? Is so, why sign La Roche and Dunn?
  20. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 11:47 AM) I was just about to post this. "The signing of Alejandro De Aza seemed to pretty well close the door on Cespedes, and sources say the Mets' foray into the Cespedes market was brief. And now it is over. (It may have been over for a while.)" http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-he...y-of-now-sought So, the Mets are looking for a RH outfielder eh? To the Mets I say, can we interest you in Avi Garcia? The signing of De Aza should never preclude the sighing of a much better player. I understand other issues (budget, team isn't built to contend, etc.), but that seems to be pretty a crazy conclusion to me. The Mets don't seem interested in spending money - only to a point. I think that's the bigger issue than De Aza being signed.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 22, 2015 -> 09:20 AM) No. Nope, the Sox can win the off-season, but the Cubs move have WON the off-season.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 22, 2015 -> 09:13 AM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/mike...als-in-mix.html Interesting if he could stay healthy Cardinals rotation remains strong with this move. 1) Adam Wainwright 2) Carlos Martinez 3) Michael Wacha 4) Mike Leake 5) Jaime Garcia With Wainwight missing almost all of last season, they have added 1 elite starter and another dependable starting pitcher. Their offense still leaves a to be desired, but that was probably the case with Heyward as well. I'm sure they aren't done adding to the offense. As optimistic as Cub fans should be (and they do look very good on paper), this is still a top heavy division that may take 95 wins+ to win. St. Louis is formidable with that rotation alone and the Pirates are still around as well. This will be a fun division next season again.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 21, 2015 -> 11:02 PM) That's the problem...I'm not sure there will be the same "open checkbook" from JR to add second/third tier pieces like Parra, Austin Jackson and another veteran starting pitcher even if the price would be the same or similar as the cost of signing one of Upton/Cespedes/Gordon in terms of payroll ($20-25 million added). If you added Parra for $8-10 million, already you'd be quite limited in adding two more pieces (quality) for between $12-15 million more. You couldn't afford Gallardo, Parra and Austin Jackson, for example. Maybe you could manage Parra, Jackson and Fister...but could you sell that to JR? How many times have we had that discussion about "getting stuck in the middle" and adding 2nd/3rd tier options and overpaying for their past performance (see Cabrera/LaRoche/Duke, etc.) Definitely that idea of overpaying for a Fowler or Span instead of one of the big names and calling it quits is scary/disappointing for most Sox fans, although surely better than Avi. $12.5-15 million better, though? Not likely. I'd love to know what their definition of 'all-in' means. I guess they can say they are trying to win it all if they a #4 #5 and #6 hitter to the lineup without losing much at the major league level. I tend to think you're right - if they don't land a top talent, I don't think they will spend that same money on lesser free agents; perhaps, some bargain basement shopping, but probably not to the same spending levels.
