  1. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 10:07 AM) I cant wait until this day is over so we can quit talking about Halladay. Great pitcher, but the asking price is bizarre I don't want the Sox involved assuming they even had the prospects to get Halladay (which I don't think they do since the Jays are asking for can't miss elite pitching prospects). And the idea of including Danks or Floyd in a Halladay deal is just beyond stupid. Toronto is asking for a lot, undestandable position to take, but his value lowers significantly after the deadline today.
  2. QUOTE (tommy @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 09:37 PM) I'm kind of asking out of left field but I was at work all day without any news source, and I got a twitter msg from Stone that said: "I wonder if kenny williams will hold a press conference to deny the floyd, richard, ramirez, and flowers for halliday." Was there an early rumor floating around? Sounds like Stone is just being sarcastic.
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 06:00 PM) At 3pm tomorrow, I offer Richard, Poreda, Fields, 1 or 2 lower level guys. If they say No, fine. So, you think the Blue Jays are just going to give him away at the deadline?
  4. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 08:44 PM) Name one team with a better front four than Halladay, Buehrle, Danks, Floyd. I don't care what the Sox record is, if you make the post-season you can contend for a title. I take it you want the club to sell or don't think the Sox have what it takes? Up until this mini skid the Sox have played pretty darn solid baseball the past 5-6 weeks. If the Sox traded for Halladay without giving up Floyd or Danks, their rotation would be at the top, if not at the top, of the AL. I don't want the Sox to sell or buy. Yes, with Halladay they are a much better team, but at what cost? Kenny has moved the team into a transitional mode, with several younger players (Beckham, Ramirez, Getz, Quentin, Denks, Floyd) part of a new core, and others hopefully on the way. As exciting as it would be to acquire Halladay, I don't think the Sox are guaranteed the division, given their upcoming schedule, poor defense and inconsistent offense. I'd be much more in favor of such a move if I thought the Sox were better than average right now.
  5. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 03:45 PM) Kenny: Now is the Time to Acquire Roy Halladay By Jason Gage SoxNet The trade deadline ~24 hours away and the Sox have now lost 5 of 6 since Buehrle's perfect game and now find themselves 3 games back and in need of a spark. Could Roy Halladay be that spark?Full Article A .500 team should trade away it's farm system because it needs a spark? Ridiculous, and stupid, logic.
  6. My guess is that the White Sox made the courtesy call a few weeks back to see what the asking price would be, and were not about to meet their price, so I'm not really thinking that the Sox were much more than a minor player anyways.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 08:51 AM) http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/david-kapl...line-guide.html So, the Sox may be in better position to make a major move, but only if the cost is not exorbitant in both money and prospects given up????
  8. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 09:26 AM) If Halladay stays, I think Ricciardi has totally failed Why? Are you suggesting that Riccardi should take what he considers to be less than his full worth just to make a deal?
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 06:08 PM) I really wonder if payroll and the recession are killing the trade deadline for a lot of teams. Teams aren't as willing to give up their young minor league prospects. That isn't something new though, that's been going on for a few seasons now.
  10. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 11:28 PM) I've said it before, and I'll say it again.... I'd do anything to get Ian Stewart on this team. Would you murder somebody?
  11. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 11:16 AM) My spidey sense tells me Haren would be a great pickup but not to mortgage the farm. :-) It would be a great pickup, but it would gut the system. Plus, do we even know for certain that he's actually available?
  12. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) I am happy if KW is exploring other options. To be honest now I would rate Haren as a better pitcher to Halladay in terms of longevity and financial sense. As a pitcher as well. But there are many who would disagree. Unless the Sox are willing to trade away a farm system that Kenny has just started to rebuild for Halladay (doesn't seem like a possibility anymore) or Haren, I really don't see the point of making a trade. The starting rotation is solid from #1-#3, Contreras has been fine in the backend of the rotation, and the #5 spot isn't much different than most teams. The bullpen has the arms (Jenks, Thornton, Dotel, etc) but needs to get it together. Offensively, they still don't hit as well as I think they should with that lineup, but there really aren't any obvious spots that Williams would upgrade at. That isn't to say that this team is stacked - it can definitely upgrade it's pitching, but I wonder if the best idea at this point is to let the season play out as it is, and then evaluate which of these free agents (Thome, Dye (they aren't going to pay him $12 million), and Contreras) they may want back at a reduced price.
  13. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 06:33 PM) I wish this Phillies deal would just die already. The constant back and forth is becoming very tiresome. It sounds like there is a lot of posturing going on...Next 3-4 days should be pretty interesting.
  14. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 04:30 PM) Cowley: Sox Interested in Haren/Lee By Jason Gage SoxNet Joe Cowley, Sun Times, reported in a radio interview that the Chicago White Sox might be interested in acquiring Indians ace Cliff Lee or Diamondbacks ace Dan Haren. Cowley went on to say that Octavio Dotel mentioned he might be part of a "3 team deal" which would send Lee to the White Sox. Gavin Floyd is the name Cowley through out as the potential "centerpiece" of a Dan Haren Deal...Click to Read Our Take Trading Floyd/Danks is counter-productive. The Sox are not going to be trading these guys, not only because of their worth on the current team heading into the stretch run, but also because of their cost certainty. Another observation - the Sox might be interested in Cliff Lee or Dan Haren????? They might be????? How about, of course they would be, if they are truly available. I heard they may have an interest in Albert Pujuols as well.
  15. MLB Network is reporting that Halladay to the Phillies may be done within 24 hours.
  16. From today's Sun Times: GM Williams admits to Sox trade activity According to a major-league source, the White Sox did more than inquire about Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Roy Halladay, putting together an offer that was shot down. Whether that happened or if Sox general manager Ken Williams was still trying to make a deal happen before the July 31 trade deadline, Williams wasn't saying. ''Nice try,'' Williams said when asked if he was making progress toward changing the roster. He acknowledged there has been activity. ''It's July. It's never quiet,'' he said. ''Yeah, but [the activity is] in the 'Get Smart' Cone of Silence.'' The Sox are believed to still be hunting down a proven starting pitcher. What has slowed potential trade activity is that more and more teams are unwilling to part with youth. While Williams might not necessarily fall into that category -- see the attempted deal for Jake Peavy in May, which would have cost the Sox prospects -- it's a trend across the trade landscape. ''It makes things harder ... a lot harder,'' Williams said. ''But there are still aggressive general managers on teams that have chances to win championships, and as long as that dynamic exists, possibilities are out there. You just have to go through the process.'' Manager Ozzie Guillen called it ''very quiet'' on the front. ''A lot of people are making rumors about different players,'' Guillen said. ''Right now, the only thing you're going to hear is rumors. Right now we don't have anything on the table. I don't expect anything to happen. ''Right now, I think if those guys go out there, and [bartolo] Colon comes back [Friday] and throws the ball the way we think he can help us, then we add another pitcher. But right now we don't have anybody.''
  17. From CBSSports: Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi still hasn't received an appropriate trade offer for Roy Halladay, and has set a July 28 deadline to complete a deal for the 2003 Cy Young Award winner. "At this point, it's probably unlikely that we'll trade Doc," Ricciardi said Tuesday. "No one has really stepped up yet," Ricciardi said. "We've got to be highly motivated to move him. We haven't been highly motivated yet." Ricciardi said the deadline is necessary to get an agreement in place for what is likely to be a complicated deal. He also wants the matter resolved before Halladay makes a scheduled start July 29 in Seattle. "In three days, not much is probably going to happen," Ricciardi said. "It's such a magnitude, the trade. He's got to OK the team he's going to, we've got to agree on prospects. That doesn't happen, traditionally in baseball, in one hour. I think we need a little more time than that." Ricciardi declined to say how many teams have entered the bidding for Halladay, but acknowledged "there's been enough."
  18. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) I actually think Dotel can close games the rest of the year. If they really need to clear salary. I'm wondering if Jenks being involved in a deal to Toronto may work? Especially if we take on Rolens contract. Jenks, Ramirez, Poreda, Richard plus 2 more prospects for Halladay and Rolen. The Jays get there SS, an expeirenced successful closer and 2 young pitchers with high cielings while shedding about $20 million in payroll for next season. Dotel was a nightmare last season when he filled in for Jenks. I'm not sure I'd want to see that again. Now, saying that, even though he is a bit erratic at times, he also can dominate as well, and he doesn have good numbers. If the Sox are looking clear salary, and bring in a decent prospect, Dotel has been a productive relief pitcher for the Sox so there would be interest in him. I highly doubt the Sox take on Rolen or any other hitter's big salary unless that team is paying a giant chunk of the contract. I also wonder, if the Blue Jays trade Rolen and Halladay (especially him obviously), aren't they shedding payroll and going young? I know they are stuck with the contracts of Rios and Wells, but they can shed around those guys and fill in in with younger, cheaper player so I'm not sure Jenks would fall into that category.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 07:30 AM) Hawk and Stone I believe were letting the fanbase know to stop the Halladay dreams yesterday. They mentioned Philadelphia and Boston as destinations and a couple more teams, never even mentioning the beloved. That's partly because the White Sox have shown the ability to fly under the radar with trades of late. Who knew anything about Jake Peavy until it was pending his approval? The other side of this is that the Sox may not want him because of the cost of the farm system (I don't think the Sox, outside of Beckham, have any top level prospects (not to say they don't have good prospects though, but other teams like Philadelphia have more to offer). Secondly, unless the Sox are prepared to give him a 4 year extension (and historically, outside of Buehrle, they haven't of late), they risk gutting their farm system for 1 year and a stretch run. Very risky.
  20. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 02:28 PM) I just heard about 3 analysts predict the Sox to win the division today.. . Should be a pretty cool 2nd half of the season regardless. As far as the Sox and Rios? No way in hell. If KW takes on a mega contract, it would have to be for a starting pitcher. If we are going to add to the offense, why not go after David Dejesus? KC has put Dejesus and Teahen out on the market. His numbers are alittle down this year but he could be a great asset down the stretch. He would have to split time in the OF with Pods, Dye and CQ but im sure Ozzie could find a way to plug him in there. DeJesus has always been an under the radar type player.....I think Teahan is a bit overhyped, but that is what happens when there isn't much out there.
  21. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 06:54 PM) The issue isn't where Richard falls in the rotation, it is that Richard is in the rotation at all. True, but if he's in the rotation, keep him last up.
  22. QUOTE (Jimmywins1 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 11:18 AM) It's an interesting read, he goes on to say that Rios would play CF for us and that the Sox may not be scared of his salary with Dye, Thome and Contreras coming off the books. If the Jays ate about half of his contract and it didn't cost us too much, I wouldn't be opposed to it. Rios has been a solid hitter in the past, playing at a place like the Cell might help him out, he's still young and he'd solve that CF problem for us. The contract is ugly, but I think it'd be a solid idea to at least inquire about him. I don't buy it because I don't see the White Sox taking on his contract, not to mention that his production has fallen off.
  23. QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 05:48 PM) f***in' BOO! I have no issue with this. Richard should be 5th, given how poor he's been. I don't care about stacking the lefties - if they pitch well, it won't matter.
  24. QUOTE (RME JICO @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) Buy Mode, but we will have to wait until the end of the month. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Arjc...ype=team_report I don't believe that Kenny Williams is going to wait on a deal, should there be a guy he's zeroing in on.
  25. QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) I have gone back and forth as to wether we should be buyers or sellers. I struggle with a make the playoffs and hope vs clear cut world series contender. I think many understand there can be a difference. My greatest fear was treading water and getting nothing done. No playoff run and no addition of promising youngsters. I really looked at our schedule until the trading deadline. 16 games in 15 days before the 31st is up with the last sets of 4 home Tampa Bay 4 in 3 days at Detroit 3 at Minnesota 2 home Yankees(third post July 31st) I think that schedule will show what we are and may explain why we added a reliever already in a trade. I think you can put the White Sox in the buyers category, but that doesn't mean they will make any moves between now and July 31st. I doubt the Sox make any moves on the offensive side, and given that the price of Roy Halloday is so high, unless the Sox jump in a potential Erik Bedard deal, what other starting pitcher do you want? I suppose they can make a deal for a 5th starter, innings type pitcher who isn't very good, but won't be completely horrible, but I wouldn't call that type of deal wouldn't make the team much better. My point is, there isn't much available to get.
