Currently looking for HR work...mainly on the Talent Acquisition/Talent Management front. New hire paperwork, background checks, etc...if you know anyone hiring for this, please send me a PM. Thanks.

Damn, it's awesome that I can log in after so long, find a music thread, and the first band I see mentioned is my favorite...RUSH!!! It's too bad they are basically done with touring, although I am holding out hope for another Geddy solo release....a small theater acoustical tour with Alex would rock too.

Welcome! Nice to meet you. My name is Art Vandelay and I'm an architect.

QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Apr 12, 2012 -> 09:55 PM) I sat in the scout seats a few years ago, and the guy in the M&Ms jacket brought his laptop. He was on it the entire game. He also stood up and turned around and looked at the fans behind him and the announcers booth between every half inning. Really annoying to sit behind. That screams attention whore.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 24, 2011 -> 01:37 PM) Congrats, Art! But you never told us how things played out with Company A and Company B? First of all, thanks everyone for your congrats. Secondly, the company that was supposed to call me back in this story (Company A) NEVER DID. I was really surprised too because we had a great conversation but maybe the recruiter just couldn't get the local office on the same page. Oh well, I am not going to sweat it.

I am going in today to sign my offer letter and get the background check started and also complete the drug test. It's been a long 14 months but I'm finally back!

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 19, 2011 -> 03:11 PM) Congrats and don't forget about the Penske file! You know it! After all, I am indeed Penske material.

Just an update. My interview today went great. The job sounds like it will be fantastic and I will be getting a job offer maybe tomorrow or early next week. I will be able to meet with the other company if needed, but man, I don't know if they can top this. Anyway thanks everyone for your input. It was very helpful.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 18, 2011 -> 11:34 PM) If you are interviewing for the first time on Thursday, do you think they have other interviews possibly lined up for next week? Or would bring you in for another one, perhaps? It would be good for you, but tough to predict, that they would give you an offer tomorrow or Friday after a Thursday interview I would think. Maybe that could help buy you some time, or at least get further with the other company. That's the thing about all of this. I don't know if they have other candidates they are interviewing or not, and the reason I say that is that I used to work for the same company as a few people already working there (it's the same industry as I've been in the past 12+ years). So really they already know me, for the most part. They have made it seem like all I need to do is go in there and talk to them. I don't know; I could be wrong but that is the vibe I am getting.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 18, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) My fiancee had a similar situation a couple years ago. She had completed her 3rd interview with Company A. She had had 2 interviews with Company B. On a Thursday, Company A offered her a job. But, she really wanted to work for Company B if they were going to offer. Once she had the offer from Company A, she called Company B and told them that she has an offer from Company A and said that she had to let Company A know by Monday. She also told Company B that she completely understands if they are not ready to make a decision yet, but she just wanted them to be aware of the situation. She wasn't pushy about anything, but she was up front and honest with them, told them she would still love to pursue an opportunity with them if they were willing, etc. Monday came and she had to let Company A know something, and really, she wasn't going to turn down Company A if she didn't know one way or the other from Company B. Well Company B called her and offered her a job. She never told Company A that she was interviewing with another company, but had no problem telling Company B the situation. I think she played it about as well as she could. Granted it worked out well, but going in, the actions seemed to make the most sense and didn't hurt anyone's feelings or come off in bad way to either company. That sounds cool and I am glad it worked out for her. Only difference here is that I have not interviewed with either yet and am waiting to see if I even am offered an interview by the other company. I think the only thing I can realistically do, if I get an offer tomorrow, is call the other company and tell them I got a job offer and let them decide from there what they want to do. If I only have 24 hours to decide though, there probably won't be a lot they can do. I am sure they would want me to come in and interview in person before making any kind of offer and unless they cram me in last minute for the next morning, I will be out of luck with that one.

QUOTE (bmags @ May 18, 2011 -> 09:49 AM) I'm excited how active this thread is for everyone. Seems soxtalk is in for brighter times. Yep. The winds of change are blowing! Thanks to those who gave me their advice on my situation too. My interview is tomorrow at 10am and I am going to see how it goes. I hope to see if they can let me take all the info and think it over for a couple of days. This is really why I wanted to wait until Friday but everyone was telling me that Friday is a bad day to interview, plus they said it would look as though I wasn't eager enough. Yep, time to just get hired so I can stop it with the mind games.

Ok people, here's my scenario... I had a phone screen interview with Company A on Monday that I thought went very well. The recruiter and I really hit it off, and she is going to get back to me later this week after discussing me to the local hiring manager to let me know if they want me to come in for an in-person interview next week. Here's my problem. I have an in-person interview on Thursday this week with Company B. And I think based on a conversation that I already had with the hiring manager and HR that there is a good chance I will be getting a job offer. I would really like to interview with the Company A too though, but I don't yet know if that will even happen. If it does, it could mean more money and possibly a better position than Company B. What do you do in this situation? Is there really some way I could get Company B to give me time to think it over while I go and interview with Company A? Mind you, I have been out of work since April last year, so I really don't need to be turning down job offers right now but of course, I want to give myself the best opportunity. I also don't think it would be very wise to tell Company B that I also have an interview planned with Company A. Thoughts?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 12, 2011 -> 03:46 PM) On the bolded above, I applied for over 40 openings last year and had one interview out of all that. This year I've already had 3 different organizations invite me in for an interview. I hear ya! I am getting more calls too. Things definitely seem to be happening out there and it's about damn time!

QUOTE (The Gooch @ May 12, 2011 -> 01:01 PM) They don't seem to realize that they lose a lot of good talent by waiting so long sometimes. Well hopefully soon enough they will no longer have that luxury. I don't have specifics in front of me this moment, but I know hiring is up in a few sectors (so they say, anyway). If that's true, then they are going to need to start moving if they don't want to lose out on good candidates. Ironically, a guy who has been telling me he has a job for me since October (and here we are 7 months later and I'm still waiting) might be losing out on me soon if this continues. One of their competitors wants to interview me soon. Hey, you snooze, you lose.

QUOTE (The Gooch @ May 9, 2011 -> 09:48 PM) Yeah SIOP was just in Chicago this year. Lots of interesting stuff and tons of chances to meet people in the field. Also, CIOP has networking events about twice a year and meetings/speakers about 4 or 5 more times. A lot is about networking right now, especially in an economy that continues to be stale. That is what something online schools lack, but there are opportunities such as those mentioned above. Really wanted to go but being out of work for a year now and not being an SIOP member, it would have cost me $375 for registration alone and I think another $100-$150 to use the job services. I was afraid to take the chance, given the money issue. I have attended a couple of CIOP meetings though and I will attend more as they become available.
