QUOTE(Wedge @ Apr 4, 2006 -> 03:51 PM) I'm disappointed in our starters thus far, but with the offense we got today, even a solid effort from Freddy would still probably be a losing effort. Gotta give some props to Westbrook for limiting our offense to just six hits and two runs. I checked the ESPN Gamecast and it seemed like his sinker must have been working because there were an inordinate number of groundouts.

Freddie's going to be just fine. He just had a bat outing -- not unlike some other starters the last couple of days (Zambrano, Zito). What's really exciting is that we now get to throw our third starter at the Tribe to try and win the series, and that guy's name is Jose Contreras. Then we go on to the next series and get to throw Garland, Buerhle and Vazquez! If the team were built around two or three good starters, those particular starts become more important because you want to make sure you win the games when your best pitchers are on the mound. We can absorb a bad start better than a lot of teams because of the pitching depth we have.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 12:11 PM) Agreed that Politte didn't look good last night. He can't be realistically expected to post a 2.00 ERA again, but he needs to keep it under 4.00. Otherwise, we might be forced to trade for a veteran long-reliever. Cliff just couldn't get his slider over for a strike. Guys were sitting on his fastball. If he gets his slider over, he'll be fine. I'm not worried.

QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Feb 28, 2006 -> 05:34 PM) I basically had an out-of-body experience when Paulie hit that slam. That made me laugh out loud because, looking back, I kind of did too.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 08:33 PM) The only one which doesn't look like a significant upgrade over last year on paper is Anderson in for Rowand, but that's only because Anderson's younger...he's almost certainly got a bigger upside - faster, more power, could hit for same average as ARow, better throwing arm. Because Rowand didn't have that great of an offensive year it becomes easier for Anderson to put up similar numbers. I'm not sure Anderson would put up the same numbers that Rowand did in 2004, but who knows if Aaron will produce those again either. Rowand's defense will be hard to replace, but I keep hearing from different media sources and this and other boards that the White Sox organization is high on Anderson's defense.

There is as much chance of the Sox trading Tadahito as there is of them getting rid of Buerhle, Garcia AND Contreras. In other words, it's not happening. The Sox are very high on Tadahito, he's relatively inexpensive and possesses one of the most well-rounded skill sets among second baseman. Additionally, the Sox think he may be better utilized as a slugger toward the bottem of the order. The reason they want a speedy two-hole hitter is because they perceive that much of Iguchi's offensive production is being wasted by focusing on moving runners over and taking pitches to give Pods steal opportunities. He's very good at that, but he doesn't get to flash his extra-base power very much in that capacity.

White Sox acquire Jim Thome per ESPNnews

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 04:01 PM) Only thing I don't like about getting Pierre to play CF is his arm...between Him and Pods noodle arms people will be running all day..... Neither have good arms, but their gap-to-gap coverage may offset that deficiency since more fly balls could be turned into outs to begin with. -
White Sox acquire Jim Thome per ESPNnews

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 03:25 PM) AJP has seen this before when he was in a Twins uniform. Also, the guys in the clubhouse know that Jim Thome is a wrecking ball in the batters box, they know what this means to this offense. The offseason has just begun, my interest is now piqued. Well put. I know it's difficult to avoid, but constructing a perennial winner necessitates that a GM not "fall in love" with any one player. Decisions to keep players based on emotional factors usually turn out badly for the entire team. Decisions need to be made based upon needs. To that end, this is an excellent trade. The Sox get a big, strong power hitting left-handed bat in the middle of the order in exchange for a position player whose numbers can be replaced to an extent by in-house candidates for even less money. This also provides the Sox with the flexibility, if they choose, to trade for a speedster to play center and bat second in the line-up, allowing Tadahito to move down in the order and hit for more power. Assuming we sign Paulie, Thome also creates some flexibility for the line-up in that he can play first on occasion and allow Paulie to DH and get some rest. I like Aaron too, but this is a very good trade for the Sox. -
What does Philips propose the Indians would do with Travis Hafner if they acquired Frank to be their DH? Why on earth would the Indians want to push Hafner's bat out of the line-up considering he is a thumper and younger than Big Frank? I didn't think playing Hafner in the field is much of an option.

I don't want to perpetuate false information, but I thought I heard somewhere that they nixed the home run porch and the only renovation left was the green seats. Anyone know if this is true?

Alright, let's make this painless!!!

C'mon Scotty!!!

Would it be asking to much to get a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2005 -> 01:54 PM) Hey, if he's even just hitting bad pitching well, that's good enough for me. Someone will make a bad pitch to him in the playoffs. Hitting is all about not missing the bad pitches. The good pitches are going to get most hitters out. I'm thinking he is busting out of his slump. Two hits on Tuesday, two hits yesterday and a couple of hits tonight. He's getting consistent. Aaron on the other hand had the homer, but, other than that, has not shown signs of turning it around.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 29, 2005 -> 12:59 PM) It is a BIG strike zone today. Not much point in taking anything close. Ah, thanks, didn't know that from the gamecast. In that case, you are correct. I wish these umps would call a uniform strike zone!

We need to work the counts. Two quick outs by A.J. and Juan.

Let's just keep piling on runs!!!

QUOTE(illinilaw08 @ Sep 29, 2005 -> 12:50 PM) Yeah, outside of the homerun last night Aaron has really been beating everything into the ground Like DJ said last night, at least he isn't striking out. He's in a "contact" slump. He will bust out of it.
-
Aaron is really struggling to get any elevation lately. He must be rolling over on the ball. We've got to get him going!!!

I remember when a psychic "predicted" that the Bears were going to lose the 1985 Superbowl. Ooops.

Marriotti is making assumptions he can't support with any evidence. He's blaming KW for not making a deal at the deadline while arguing that this was the year to bring in reinforcements because our competitors have so many holes and are vulnerable. How come our competitors, especially the Red Sox and Yankees, didn't go out and make the big deals necessary to close their holes? Because there was nothing really available at the deadline. It was a seller's market to the extreme. Even if we had mortgaged the farm for Griffey, he would most likely be on the trainer's table right now like he is in Cincinnati. That would have been a disaster. It's easy for Marriotti to sit back and scream that something should have been done, but how many major league rosters has he assembled? How many conversations has he had with other GM's about making trades? How would Marriotti react if he made what he thought was a generous proposal for a player and the other team told him "no?" It's not that easy Jay. Had the Sox acquired Griffey, you'd better believe Marriotti would be ripping the Sox for taking such a risk and betting a magical season on a player with Griffey's injury history. The only way Marriotti won't rip on this team is if they were to actually win a World Series. If they lost game 7 of a World Series he would rip them for not seizing such a rare opportunity.

Guys, guys, guys, what's wrong with this team right now is the starting pitching. But for Contreras, they all seem fatigued. I will concede the possibility that they are fatigued because Ozzie overused them, but I don't know that for sure. We probably wouldn't even notice any of these other "problems" if the starters were still throwing quality starts. Let's just hope they can turn it around over the final two weeks of the season. There is no reason to fire Ozzie or KW. Ozzie's not giving up runs by the bundle to bad teams. In retrospect, KW had the presense of mind to pursue Jason Schmidt and A.J. Burnett when it seemed like we needed hitting more than anything. I couldn't understand at the time why he was fixated on another pitcher. Maybe he knew best after all. He would have had to give up the farm for Burnett. I'm glad we didn't get Griffey because he injured himself again. KW did a great job of reconstructing this team. This is the best White Sox team since our last playoff appearance. The most wins we have had since then was 86 in 2003. We have 88 wins right now with two weeks to play. We have a 4.5 game lead in the division and a slightly larger lead in the wild card race should it come to that. No doubt our momentum is going the wrong way, but that can change if the starting pitchers step up and carry us to the finish line. Let's hope they do. Our season depends on how they pitch from here on out. It's that simple. With all due respect to my fellow Sox fans, all of this talk about firing people is crazy.
-
There would be no reason to fire Ozzie. Objectively speaking, this team has improved over last year's team. This team will win 90-something games (yet to be determined how many over 90). Hardly a bad season with regard to their record. All you can hope for is to improve every year. The playoffs often depend on what other teams are doing. Some years 80-something wins gets you into the playoffs while other years it might take well into 90-win territory. It's not Ozzie's fault that the starting pitchers have been sub-par down the stretch.

Alright, it's now a three inning game and we have been spotted two runs. Let's close this out!!!
