  1. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 04:29 PM) http://www.cnn.com/2006/EDUCATION/02/20/sc...reut/index.html Here comes Juggs..... A victory for logic, common sense, science as a discipline and freedom of religion. I'm glad to see ID dying a quick death.
  2. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 04:05 PM) I can shed some light into this: According to the Alabama Criminal Code 13A which is the same as all of the other 49 states. The act of Terrorism occurs when a person by violence tries to induce public policy or coerce a group of citizens. Here is the actual wording: An indictment for the crime of terrorism shall charge the defendant with a specified offense and shall state that the defendant acted with intent to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion, or affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination, or kidnapping. Thanks for the info. But criminal codes are not necessarily identical (and in fact usually are not) from state to state. The general spirit of most laws is very similar, of course. But with something as nebulous as terrorism, I suspect there are differences. For example, the Iowa law starts the same as you state, but adds its own flavor... Thus explaining my drunk idiots example. Also note the exception for expression of ideas, which in Iowa, could be construed as to be applicable to the case of animal rights activists. In that case, their crimes would not fall under this statute.
  3. QUOTE(juddling @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 02:18 PM) If it were abortion protestors smashing the windows of abortion clinic workers houses, would is stil not be terrorism? Just asking, not accusing. If one is, the other is, as I stated earlier.
  4. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 02:14 PM) Plus he slept with Ann Coulter. *holds nose* Bill Maher slept with Ann Coulter?! Their spawn would surely create the most annoying human ever to roam the earth. I never liked Maher. He is just plain irritating.
  5. According to the Sox, all 27 game plans in all sections are sold out: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...split_plans.jsp Pretty amazing. Just wanted to get this info out there for people to see - I didn't see it mentioned elsewhere. There are apprently still Ozzie plans, and full season plans are still available (though scout, club, premium lower box and premium upper box are sold out for all games, all plans, as posted previously).
  6. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 01:51 PM) Hate to disapoint, but viruses have NOTHING to do with the proccessor a computer uses. It's about vulnerablities in the OS. OS X is more secure than Windows, but not totally impenitrable. But the OS does indeed need to work with the Bios, which manages the processor, no? And the chipset dictates some of the machine data communication involving the OS as well, I believe. There is a connection there.
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 01:41 PM) This reminds me of those debates over Hate Crime legislation...how exactly does one define what is and what is not terrorism, and can a person be punished more stringently because some action is defined as terrorism instead of just vandalism? Indeed, terrorism is a legal quagmire. Here is an example. I know of an instance where a number of drunken revelers tried to prevent their party from being broken up by throwing things at their neighbors. Apparently, the neighbors threatened to call police, so the partiers started lobbing threats and bricks over the fence. Cops showed up, saw them doing it, and they were charged with terrorism. I don't know what the final result was, though. EDIT: This was in Iowa
  8. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 01:12 PM) Im curious as to how this board will react to this story, so I will withhold my feelings about it for a few pages http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/02/20/animalri...l.ap/index.html Yeesh. Well, I am not familiar with the specific wording of laws on terrorism in PA, so I can't characterize guilt on that item. But these people were certainly guilty of an array of other crimes, including criminal damage to property and possibly some sort of assault. In any case, its disgusting and wrong. Animal testing is a sensitive issue, but just like people who attack abortion clinics, these people have apparently stepped past the line of protest and moved on to criminal abuse. They should be punished.
  9. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) BTW, if I was a Mac OS user, I'd be more worried about the viruses that will follow the move to Intel architecture. It will make Mac a nicer target. Already happening. First virus to target Mac OS X: http://cnn.com/2004/TECH/internet/04/09/ap...ojan/index.html
  10. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 12:50 PM) http://www.casperstartribune.net/articles/...h/d8fr777o0.txt I don't get it Tex. What do you see as wrong with this? Apple is protecting its proprietary software from various types of theft. I would expect any software company (or software division) to do the same. Their code is their lifeblood, and Apple OS is not open-source, right? So what bothers you about this?
  11. QUOTE(kevin57 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 11:14 AM) Barry Bonds needs 48 HRs to break Hank Aaron's HR record. Assuming that he's serious about retiring after this year because he's "not having any fun" anymore, do you think he'll achieve this goal? I wish there was an option for "I hope not."
  12. QUOTE(Scwible @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 10:07 AM) Hanz Zimmer, though the song is officially credited to Klaus Badelt i think. Hanz was the Score producer for the movie. Klaus Bedalt is Hans Zimmer's protoge. It was Bedalt's composition, but Zimmer's had his hands in it. And the reel music they used is a combo of "He's a Pirate" and bits of one or two other tracks on the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack laced together. Nice edit, actually. Unfortunately, the Sox Pride DVD has the highlight reel but different music.
  13. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 09:34 AM) New topic, it varies by location and office, but making the ballot as an independent is hard work, requiring a lot of volunteers. Even a "3rd Party" is difficult at best. Where should the line be drawn between a ballot with only John Q. Republican Jane A. Democrat and one with 174 candidates? Should it be money? signatures? an "independent board" to verify the candidate? some other? Open ballots? I like the German electoral system. It encourages candidates who aren't necessarily in line with a dominant party, but still allows the people to speak their minds on their belief set. Let's see if I can remember this correctly... Germans vote in national parliamentary elections with two votes. They vote once for the candidate they want to represent them, and once for the party they favor. The votes for party (I believe there are 4 or 5 parties in GE big enough to gain seats) are counted up, and they are used to split the house. For example, of Party A got 40%, Party B got 35% and Party C got 25%, then those percentages are applied to the total size of parliament, and that is how many seats each party gets. Then, if Party A has 100 seats, then the top 100 vote getters from that party fill those seats. I might be wrong on some of the details, but you get the idea. It allows for specific candidates to shine, and find a seat, but also allows for broad platforms to remain important. I like it. As far as money goes, I tend to favor much stricter ceilings on individual and corporate donations per year, and anything else that would make the process less about money and more about winning support.
  14. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 01:33 AM) Yes, it could possibly split ourselves from allies. Don't know how it would stregthen those we should be working against, though. I just don't believe we can have any significant influence in appointing a new UN leadership, as Northsidesox is suggesting, without problems erupting. It's almost as if for the United Nations to hold any legitimacy in the world, you'll need a leader who doesn't appear to be in our pockets. Everyone wants change--they just don't want reform if it means newly appointed leadership doesn't follow their beliefs. And guess what? With a Republican appointee representing our country in the United Nations, and the obvious importance the United States holds, you can only guess who they would support. Of course problems will erupt. Change within an organization like the UN is slow, inconsistent and painful. But its necessary. And by influence, I don't mean bending them on the issues (at least not solely). I am more referring to setting up the rules of conduct so as to hinder corruption, and do a lot more to inform the UN why we are doing the things we are doing (and expecting the same of other countries). Let more sunlight in, to morph an analogy in heavy use recently.
  15. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 12:30 AM) The only Stans I've ever known have been baptist. And of course there's St Stans in Michigan City...
  16. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 08:34 PM) Using our influence within the United Nations to appoint new US friendly leadership sounds like bullying and arrogance to me. If we're a part of it, you damn well know they will push for their candidate. Whomever thay may be. It just proves no matter what we do, someone will dislike our country. Withhold dues, it creates further divide. Lend a hand in appointing a successor to Annan and it's, "America deciding what's best for the world again.." Using our influence is bullying and arrogance? No, sending an anti-UN relic like Bolton to represent your country and wholly ignoring the rest of the world in going to war is arrogance and bullying. I am suggesting working positively, politically, to push things in a different direction. No guarantees there, but its a much better alternative than cutting and running, further opening the divide.
  17. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 02:09 PM) http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/18/un.reform/index.html They dont want to listen to a reasoned appeal for reform then, like a bratty child, they're going to get their allowance cut off. Bad idea, and it will only cause a further split between the US and the rest of the world. As I stated in the other UN thread, I'd rather see us get more active in the choice of new leadership in the UN, and start changing the organization from within. Its time to use our influence, instead of bullying and arrogance.
  18. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 02:16 PM) I stand by what I said in the thread title. Religon of peace?! My f***ing ass. And as many pointed out, your application of this violent pathology to the entire religion is insulting and simple-minded. There are extremists, and there is the rest of Islam. There are large populations of Muslims that represent a large portion of entire countries (Turkey, India, various Stans) that have been largely peaceful throughout the entire post-9/11 era. Can we keep the anger directed at the guilty?
  19. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 02:47 PM) Thank god for that. Annan has been a total disgrace. Hopefully the new administration will be less corrupt and anti-American. The bar is set pretty low though so whoever gets in now wont have to do a lot to outshine Kofi. ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Annan needs to go. I do agree with people here that Bolton was and still is the wrong choice for the UN. But, in this role (bringing Annan's shortfalls to light), he may prove useful. Hopefully, more care will be taken in who is nominated this time around. I'd even draw a parallel between Bolton's current role and that of the Dems - someone needs to point out the flaws of the current leader, to make room for someone new to provide positive direction.
  20. QUOTE(daa84 @ Feb 18, 2006 -> 12:42 PM) oh come on its not that many..... more like 37,037.04 Maybe we can get Kate Moss to buy season tickets - she can be the .04 each game.
  21. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 03:42 PM) I'm sure they're just wanting to make sure the media is 'scooped' going into the weekend. If they all were just 'silent' the backlash would be incredible. Plus all Presidential administrations looooove the Friday news-bombings, so that it hits the Saturday papers that no one reads.
  22. For you moderates and Indies... Of the current plethora of potential 2008 Prez candidates, who do you like? Who do you think could win a nomination who isn't a wing nut, party favor or vote-the-card guy/gal? Who can bring some real change, and create positive compromise? I'll start by throwing a few names out there, of potential candidates from both parties whom I think have some potential... Evan Bayh (D) Bill Richardson (D) John McCain ® Mitt Romney ® I'm a little concenred with Richardson's environmental policy, but otherwise I think he's my favorite of that bunch (though he is an outside shot). Bayh is also good. McCain sometimes goes a little off the map, but I think he has the best leadership skills of all four. Romney I am not so sure on regarding some social issues. So let's kick it off. Thoughts?
  23. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 03:10 PM) "Try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the games look like a GOP convention. And try to blot out all logic when announcers and sportswriters pretend to care about the luge, the skeleton, the biathlon and all those other events they don’t understand and totally ignore for all but three weeks every four years. Face it: These Olympics are little more than a marketing plan.” If a white announcer said " The paucity of whites makes it look like a NAACP convention" He would be fired the next day. Gumbel is a f***in douchebag. Some of these atheltes work their entire lives to be on the olympic team and they are not the world's greatest atheltes cause it isn't a balck dominated sport?? He's right about the announcers - most of them don't know the Luge from anything, and could care less. But everything else is utter garbage, I agree. If someone said that the running events in the summer Olympics look like a NAACP convention (making CC's example a little closer to the bone), people would have a fit. Shut your racist pie hole, Mr. Gumbel.
  24. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 03:18 PM) CBS = whores Could you explain your post?
  25. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 03:08 PM) Paid. This is why the Urinal is always "sold out" even when there are empty seats. Thank you.
