  1. I see people here talking about getting a new 2-hole hitter, per Ozzie's request, amd Pierre's name comes up a lot. I also see people talking about Anderson in CF a lot. I've had a look at some of Anderson's numbers in the minors over the years. Here is my question: is Anderson a guy who can be that 2-hole hitter? He won't steal too many bases, but he seems to be a good overall hitter and an athlete. Does he do well with situational hitting? If so... Pods Anderson Thome Konerko Dye Pierzynski Iguchi Crede Uribe Looks pretty appealing to me.
  2. QUOTE(jphat007 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 05:20 PM) If we resign Paulie I'll look at this trade like: Rowand for Thome Haigwood and Gio for Konerko because we would use the money we earned by trading Gio and Haig to sign Paulie. Or any other first baseman we sign if not Paulie. I think this is an excellent way of looking at it. Sort if like this time last year - the deals looked weird individually, but if you at how the money was moved around, it worked like a charm. And I think this one does as well.
  3. QUOTE(Purdue1906 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 03:53 PM) Ok, someone tell me who plays where between Konerko (if he reups) and Thome? I'm happy, but sad, b/c Rowand was a hell of a CF. Good luck to him. Konerko is a far superior defender at 1B to Thome, from what I have seen. Thome would be DH, and spot at 1B when PK is off.
  4. QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 03:41 PM) The fact is that Thome coming off that piss poor season and his massive contract doesn't have that much more value than Rowand. Rowand's value is as high as it will ever be IMO...this trade could potentially be great. But even if Thome is a bust and never performs well I don't think this will ever be looked at as a ridiculously horrible trade. It is truly a low risk/high reward situation, at least the way I look at it. I would characterize it more high risk/high return, given Thome's injuries... but I still think it's the smart move, as much as it hurts. I have to assume KW got some sort of medical eval on Thome before doing the deal - or demanded one be completed before he signs on the dotted line.
  5. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 03:29 PM) This also likely signals Frank Thomas has played his last game in a Sox uniform. Probably true. Also very sad. Maybe, just maybe, FT would be willing to take a low-base, high incentive deal to backup PK and Thome (he'd essentially be Thome insurance, and/or a fill-in). But that's probably not likely. :headshake
  6. QUOTE(Pierzynski 12 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 03:26 PM) Way to go KW.If this is happening then f*** you!!!Trading Rowand is bad. I think someone might need a nap...
  7. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 03:15 PM) I'm going to say this now. I hate this f***ing trade. Just because I'm curious, is your primary reason for hating it the presence A-Row had on the team? Or his stats? Or one particular aspect of his game? Just curious what people would most miss. For me, the biggest loss would be his overall presence on the team - he represents hustle, and he was a big part of the heart and soul of this club, it seemed. Very tough to replace that. Bittersweet for me.
  8. As long as we didn't give up any of the 6 SP's, and we don't take all of Thome's salary, I am PUMPED!! This is good stuff. That said, I will miss A-Row big time. Great kid, tons of hustle, and a bright future. All the best.
  9. QUOTE(Wanne @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 01:30 PM) maybe we'll get Berman to do the game! *shudder*
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 12:27 PM) Is there any chance they might move the ring ceremony to that day to get it on ESPN? Since they barely showed any pre-game or in-break festivities during the world series, I'd think that's unlikely. But you never know. Did they do it last year with Boston?
  11. QUOTE(Credepopsup @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 11:57 AM) That's great news. We'll get that game televised, over here. Now, watch it get rained off.. Or snowed off.
  12. QUOTE(sufferingsoxfan @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 10:46 PM) The Opener has been moved to Sunday night 4/2/06 for the ESPN opening game. I can't believe ESPN is actually going to give the Sox this pub. Keep this in mind when purchasing ticket plans. But my rep says this may cause some adjustments of the plans. Just talked with my ticket rep, regarding the split season plans and opening day. Basically, the plan that already had opening day on it (the "Hit and Run" weekday 27 game plan), will still have that game, even though it was moved to Sunday. Just FYI. He also told me that they recently decided on some important dates for buying extra tickets: January 24: Full season ticket holders get first crack at extra tickets for single games (including opening series and Cubs/Sox, and any others), up to some limit (to be determined) per game. January 25: Split season (27 game) ticket holders then get their crack, if there are any left (which I got the impression there likely would be, given the limits). January 27: Individual game tickets go on sale to the general public. For season ticket holders, watch your emails between now and then for more details.
  13. Latest PK rumblings, including KW quotes, from the Trib: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines Note: this was written before Delgado's signing broke.
  14. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 10:04 AM) Wow, a pet peave of mine is laying down ground rules on a messageboard in which you have only 194 posts. Not a rule - just a request. I've seen too many posts here that were questionable, so I just want to know where it came from. And it's common courtesy to the writers to do that anyway. Of course, this story is all over the board now, so no matter in this case.
  15. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 09:57 AM) Well, if Manny goes to the LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA's, then that's meaning a smaller market for Paulie, and it's looking more and more likely he'll resign with us. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hoping and
  16. QUOTE(Confederate_48 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 09:11 AM) November 23, 2005, 8:13 AM EST The Mets have reached an agreement for a trade to bring Carlos Delgado from the Marlins, Newsday has learned. The trade won't be finalized until medical examinations of the players involved are complete and commissioner Bud Selig signs off on the deal. The Mets have agreed to send righthanded pitching prospect Yusmeiro Petit and young first baseman Mike Jacobs to the Marlins for Delgado, according to someone familiar with the deal. As part of the deal, the Marlins will send $7 million back to the Mets to cover part of the $48 million remaining on Delgado's contract. Delgado does not have veto powers over a trade. Sorry, but this is a pet peave of mine. Where did this come from? What is the source? It's frustrating to see what looks like a news excerpt, but could be something pulled off of a fantasy site (as has happened here before) or just about anywhere else. Please cite your sources, folks. Thanks.
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 11:20 AM) Not official, just another Bruuuuce rumor. But it seems about right. The cubs offseason plan: pick up as many ex-sox players as possible. Seriously, if I was Jim Hendry, the fist thing I would do is unload Kerry Wood, some team would pay for him, and get some damn position players. I'd bet that Kerry Wood will be the Cubs closer in 2006. The fact that they got Eyre and are getting Howry means Hendry is trying to get a real 'pen for the Cubs, but also have someone who could step in if Wood gets injured again or can't make the transition.
  18. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 10:53 AM) I have a feeling that this is just the Phillies initial proposal, and proposals being thrown around are enough for Bruce to consider it "serious talks". And as always, the first trade offer is usually high. Of course, I'm just speculating (or doing what Bruce does without getting paid for it), but I'm guessing that the price tag for Thome will soon be coming down. Either way, if this is indeed what the Phillies are looking for in return, I suspect that Thome will be in Philadelphia next season. I think you are right about the price. Think about it - The Phils have a stellar young 1B, and no place for a DH, so they really have to move Thome if at all possible. And he's pretty much said he wants AL, midwest - that gives you CLE, DET, MIN, KC and the Sox. Eliminate KC on Sweeney and budget. CLE doesn't need a 1B much either, they have a good 1B/DH combo already. That leaves us, DET and MIN. And we're closest to his home town. Oh, and we just won a championship. I think we're in a position to get Thome, minus 2/3 of his contract, for Rowand and either Marte or a prospect pitcher. No way we need to trade away an SP in this position.
  19. QUOTE(S720 @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 09:12 AM) Per Bruce Levine this morning, Phillies want Rowand AND Contreras/BMAC for Jim Thome. If this is the case, I say, "THE HELL WITH YOU! I'll stick with my players then." Consider the source, folks. Not exactly the most reliable guy out there. No need to panic... probably.
  20. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 09:47 AM) My friend just IM'd me at work saying that Bruce Levine reported a potential trade of Rowand and either Contreras or Bmac for Thome. Did anyone else here this? Please say it ain't so. That would be an awful trade. If it's true, why would we get rid of pitching and defense (the reason we won it all) for a slugger? Trying to get back to the 2nd place formula of 2001-2004? It was Bruce Levine on ESPN Radio. Remember, this is the same Bruce Levine whose record of diarrhea at the mouth is only matched by the Wind Sock at the Sun Times. I wouldn't take it too hard... yet.
  21. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Nov 20, 2005 -> 01:14 PM) Putting a Minor League player on the 40-man and then taking him off shortly after can be a bad move. It is easier for a team to take a player off of waivers that is being taken off the 40-man than it is to select him in the Rule 5 draft. Gotcha. That was the part I was missing. I figured it would be better to protect them while you could, but if that means putting him on waivers, I see why that may not be smart. Thanks.
  22. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 05:09 PM) Thanks for that! Interestingly, unless I counted wrong, there are 39 players on there. Hm... So, the 40-man deadline has passed, and the Sox still have 39 people on their 40-man roster. Does this seem a little weird to anyone? Why would you not use all those slots to protect prospects, if nothing else? Is this a typo on MLB, or does it hint at something else? Any ideas, anyone?
  23. I really hope we get Thome, no matter what happens with PK. If PK stays, Thome can DH, because I have little confidence in a healthy Frank returning. If PK goes, then we really need Thome at 1B, and if Frank is not healthy, probably yet another bat.
  24. QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) Also: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...an.jsp?c_id=cws Thanks for that! Interestingly, unless I counted wrong, there are 39 players on there. Hm...
  25. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...t=.jsp&c_id=cws Ozuna signed for $.5M for one year (or 330k if in the minors), already noted in another thread. But the rest of the article... We added Owens, Young, Stewart, Haigwood, and Haeger to the 40-man roster. I believe that Borchard, Gload, and Anderson were already on that roster, though i can't find an official list to check.
