Major league baseball's long-standing exemption from federal antitrust regulation has no reasonable basis, Federal Reserve (news - web sites) Governor Edward Gramlich said on Friday. "Let me say, first off, loud and clear, that I agree that there is no logical argument for baseball's antitrust exemption, especially since the other pro sports do not have it," Gramlich said during a panel discussion of the sport sponsored by the centrist Brookings Institution. The discussion was held to mark the publication of a new book on baseball economics written by noted Smith College professor Andrew Zimbalist and published by Brookings. Prior to joining the Fed in 1997, Gramlich was a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan and in 1992 served as staff director for an economic study on major league baseball. Gramlich said he was puzzled that pro baseball's exemption from competition, unique among major sports that have in the past seen competing leagues, had not made it much different in terms of competitive balance, the number of teams or the ability to move franchises between cities. "I strongly agree with (Zimbalist) that the antitrust exemption should go, but if it goes, short of going all the way to competitive leagues, which we don't have in any sport, how will baseball be any different from football, basketball or hockey?" he asked. Gramlich also dismissed much of the economic benefit analysis used to build local support for bids for major league franchises. "This analysis ignores just about every basic economic postulate that it's possible to ignore," he said. But he said there was a valid interest in cities keeping a franchise. "Imagine Boston without the Red Sox. Imagine Chicago without the Cubs. What would these people talk about?" he said.

You go Jose. That is exactly the kind of thing that a manager would usually be saying, but in this case it is nice to see one of the veterans step up and say what needs to be said.

The New York Jets have said all along that they would not trade up unless there was a guy available who they absolutely loved. Apparently, love is in the air. SportsLine.com has learned that the Jets have agreed on a trade with the Bears, sending Chicago the 13th and 22nd selections in the first round in exchange for the fourth overall selection. The Jets phoned the Saints earlier this week after learning that a trade between the Patriots and Bears for a similar deal seemed dead. It is believed the Jets' coveted man is Kentucky defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson. The Bears have a few players in the middle of Round 1 they have long targeted and should still be able to get at least one of them with their first of two No. 1s. The Jets are expected to announce the deal later this afternoon

What ideas do people have to fire up this team again? Fire Jerry? Bench clearing brawl? Closed door clubhouse meeting? Call ups such as Harris, Borchard, Ginter, Almonte, etc...? Extending benchings of slumpers Rearrange bullpen order, getting Glover and Wunsch into later roles?

Test Test Test It's not working Nope definately not working.. Definitely, definitely not working... Definately , definately, positively, still not working
-
I will have to point out that this incident was the lead story in the Tribune sports page. I was very shocked to see it.

It is hard to be positive when this team is showing zero signs of life. It isn't that we are losing. When you lose and play a good game, I don't get too upset. But when it looks like they are sleepwalking that is when I get pissed off.

Boy as bad as both of these offenses have been for both teams, it is a scary series. Someone is going to get hot after this. And there is also the potential for the losing team to be almost buried in the race for the division title.

As many as 30 tigers and other big cats were found dead along with 58 cubs in a freezer at a home connected to a nonprofit animal sanctuary, authorities said. Spokesman for Tiger Rescue JOHN WEINHART, who runs Tiger Rescue and had previously been accused of improperly caring for tigers, was arrested Tuesday for investigation of animal cruelty and child endangerment, because some of the animals were found inside the house, where Weinhart lived. Also arrested were Weinhart’s wife, Marla Smith, and veterinarian Wendelin Ringel. State Department of Fish and Game investigators who raided the home also seized 13 tiger and leopard cubs, some 3 to 4 weeks old, and two alligators. A spokesman for Tiger Rescue, a refuge for former animal performers, said all the animals were cared for properly. “We don’t feel we’ve done anything wrong,” Steve Jeffries said. “We have enough food, water and shelter for all the cats.” Jeffries said the dead cubs were kept frozen because “we want to make sure there’s nothing infectious.” He said the organization had not yet examined the carcasses. Animal Services spokesman Ralph Rivers said it will be impossible to determine what killed the animals because of the advanced state of decomposition. “It was a very nasty scene out there,” he said. Weinhart, who is licensed by the state to keep tigers and other big cats, had already been scheduled to stand trial next month in San Bernardino County on 10 misdemeanor charges stemming from what prosecutors say was improper care of tigers at Tiger Rescue. The state Department of Fish and Game removed 10 tiger cubs from Tiger Rescue in November, saying the sanctuary in Colton didn’t have the proper permits for the cubs and the agency was concerned about their welfare.

Bud Selig does not intend to seek a new term as commissioner after his current deal expires in December 2006. Selig, 67, became acting commissioner in September 1992 after the forced resignation of Fay Vincent. Despite saying he didn't intend to take the job permanently, Selig agreed to a five-year term in July 1998. Owners then gave him a new five-term in November 2001, a contract that expires on Dec. 31, 2006. "So now here we are," Selig told a group from Associated Press Sports Editors on Thursday. "I have another 3 1/2, 3 3/4 years. I expect to do it. Thankfully for me, at that point that would be enough "For a guy who took it in Sept. 9, 1992, and I told my wife it was two-to-four months--14 years later ... I think that will be enough. There's no question, because there are other things I really would like to do."

Glover first right hander out of the pen. Why haven't we tried that yet? All these guys who have all of this "great stuff" keep giving up runs. I have had enough of "stuff" guys to last me a life time. Give me a guy who can get someone OUT!

I am going Saturday nite. I can't afford to go to both, and with the way we have been playing that might not be a bad thing!

It is all a mental thing with Josh. I think he has a concentration/ intensity problem. He needs to find a way to program himself to get into the zone.

Daubach isn't playing and wasting away just like Jeff Leifer did last year.

Nice. Now maybe we can see the papers rip on Cub fans
