  1. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 10:22 PM) Good Job on #6. Incorrect on #53. And #14 is basically made for you, give it another look.
  2. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 08:06 PM) Correct, and surprised that one took as long as it did to be answered.
  3. I edited the OP with strikethroughs to indicate which songs have been correctly identified. Still keeping the spoiler tags intact so latecomers can give it a go. Speaking of latecomers, I think Tex and Big Ed could make short work of some of these if they jumped in. 35 songs correctly identified, 25 left unanswered. Not bad. SS, the last Beatles song has been identified but I see there is there's still a Wings song in the mix.
  4. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 07:42 AM) Hickory, your answer is correct of course.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 10:54 AM) There's a Rush song in there. Indeed there is I had the Oaks and the Maples as a hint for a different Rush tune in an earlier draft but they didn't make the final cut.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 09:01 AM) Very fun idea. I don't know most of them, and the ones I knew were already figured out. I don't know. . . I see one Beatles song in there that Leonard didn't get.
  7. 100% correct responses from Leonard Zelig, and good call on using the spoiler tags early on to give everyone a chance. Quinarvy's response is also correct.

    Smelt Fishing

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 03:33 PM) 1) No, it's done from shore, at least in Chicago. 2) Yes, you need a heavy net anchor to throw, obviously attached to a lot of rope, or a gun to fire the anchor out for you. Obviously, you need the rest of the equipment to hang and drop the net, too. 3) Yes, depending on who you go with. It's a lot of talking and/or discreetly drinking/bbq'ing while you wait to check on the nets, so in that regard, it is somewhat like throwing lobster crates into a lake and waiting. If the smelt are running, you can catch multi-hundreds of them in a few hours. If not, you can catch 2-3 in an entire outing. 4) It's not something you just jump into, you pretty much need to take someone that has the necessary equipment, and knowledge on how to set everything up. This is solid information. I went out smelt fishing with friends in high school and college a few of times out on the seawall at Burnham Harbor and had a great time. I didn't have any gear but my friends did, and as long as we had beer to share there were other fishermen out there that were happy to share fresh smelt they were grilling or frying. Don't know if it's the same sort of vibe it was back then but it is something I fondly remember.
  9. Hanging with my Peeps — Music Version OK, Here’s a music trivia idea that popped into my head a few days ago driving in the car and listening to the radio. I have been rolling them out 10 at a time on FB, but you lucky SoxTalkers get to see 60 questions at one go (eta the list now includes a full 100 songs. Might throw some bonus songs in there if I come up with a few more good ones). Try to identify the specific songs that reference each of these sets of people by name. Some are very easy, some are pretty hard, and most of them are firmly in dinosaur rock territory because that’s what I know. Feel free to add your own songs to the list and let’s see how well you all do. Good Luck! 1. Vera, Chuck and Dave 2. Candy and Ronnie 3. Weird and Gilly 4. Babs and Clean Willie 5. 10. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 04:59 PM) Reg Presley lead singer of The Troggs ("Wild Thing") died of cancer. He was 71. The Troggs were one of my favorite bands back in the day. They did a lot more good stuff besides "Wild Thing". Some friends and I formed a garage band in the summer of 1966, when "Wild Thing" came out and that was one song of about a dozen songs we could play. We weren't that good. Anyway, Reg Presley was a hero. RIP. Also a big Troggs fan and sad to hear of Reg Presley's passing. "With a Girl Like You," "Jingle Jangle," and "Love is All Around" were great songs from the early years. Even into the mid-70s they were doing interesting stuff like "Summertime" and they also did a cool cover of "Good Vibrations" I like the summertime, when the girls wear their dresses so low you can see the sun on their ti. . . ti. . . ti. . . ti. . ti. ti. . . tan skin. . . Pretty risque stuff when I discovered it when I was in 8th grade.
  11. QUOTE (Joxer_Daly @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 07:56 AM) There is some merit in your point. All joking aside, though, it is amazing stuff. The size of them, and yet so elusive. This is awesome. . . And I personally know several of the Americans that were involved with the expedition.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 4, 2013 -> 09:50 AM) The bolded... that is something I've never heard. You disliked Unbreakable, but liked The Village? Sixth Sense and Unbreakable are the only two I really liked. I mostly liked Signs, but I hated the "tell him to swing away. . . " prophesy thing from the dying wife so much that it pretty much ruins the rest of the film for me.
  13. QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 08:04 PM) Ray Collins, of the Mothers of Invention, died on Christmas Eve. He was 76. RIP Ray.
  14. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 25, 2012 -> 05:13 PM) Got my brother a bottle of Lagavulin 16 for Christmas, one of the few bottles he doesn't have in his collection Drinking some of his homemade honey mead right now, pretty damn good. Enjoyed some Lagavulin 16 over the weekend at my folks' place. Love that stuff. I usually only shell out for Laphroiag or Ardbeg 10, so the Lagavulin is always a treat.

    The Food

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 24, 2012 -> 09:03 AM) Christmas Eve we do the traditional 7 dishes of fish (which is just the worst for someone who hates fish). Tomorrow we'll be making a prime rib. As someone who lives for great seafood, this tradition always makes me wish I was Italian at Christmas. We'll have ham at the in-laws tomorrow, but I am already looking forward to our traditional fondue on New Years Eve, and black eyed peas on New Year's Day.
  16. My heart and thoughts are with you and your family, HH.
  17. Ravi Shankar died yesterday at age 92.
  18. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 11:46 PM) Mixed up some real ass egg nog. Used some kinda cheap brandy and goslings rum. Went by the recipe from Imbibe. For some reason I don't think I'd ever used that recipe and instead always opted for a basic flip. This was really good. Much smoother and far less rich. For forbid I might actually have to write a post on Flapship. The Imbibe recipes are usually a very good starting point for classic cocktails. Rumdood's eggnog recipe, usually with Coruba, has been my default eggnog recipe since he posted it a few years ago.http://rumdood.com/2009/12/08/egg-nogg/
  19. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 08:07 PM) So I'm thinking of asking for a good rye for Christmas. Something expensive enough that I wouldn't normally pay for it but not ridiculous either. Maybe $50-75? Any thoughts on stuff that is must try? In the $60-77 range, Masterson's 10 Year Rye is outstanding — and not just because that's my surname! A very smooth 100% rye with a lot of subtle depth. Mixes well but really shines as a sipper.

    Whatcha drinkin'?

QUOTE (SnB @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 05:39 PM) I went to Hala Kahiki for the first time over the weekend. Man, what a weird place, but STRONG drinks. Been on my to do list for a couple of years. Aside from 'strong'. . . were the drinks any good?? Their tropical drink menu is pretty exhaustive and there are lots of classics on the list but I'm not sure how authentically they pull them off.
  21. I usually have to wait up longer than this to learn the results of west coast Sox road trips. Amazed that I can go to sleep knowing the results of the elections tonight.

    Halloween

No costume, but I'll share my angler fish jack-o-lantern that I think came out quire nicely.
  23. QUOTE (G&T @ Oct 29, 2012 -> 09:19 PM) No, in fact, it is recommended. I drank them during Irene. Hurricanes during a hurricane surely is the way to go.
