  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 10, 2016 -> 04:26 PM)
    Yeah, the older guys are probably looking to win, and the guys you mentioned are looking to be regulars and hopefully make themselves another contract.

    But wouldn't those guys have a better chance to win by signing with a rebuilding team?

    Follow my logic here. If they choose a team during free agency that team may or may not be in contention come the trade deadline. There are no sure things, even a team like the Cubs, as sure as you can get right now, could have a ton of injuries or other problems next season and be out of contention come July.

    However, if they choose a team that they know will most likely be a seller come July, that team would be looking to trade them to a contender for prospects. Far fetched? Maybe, but maybe not.

  2. QUOTE (balfanman @ Oct 11, 2016 -> 09:07 PM)
    If, and I realize that it's a big IF, the Cubs do not go all the way this year would they be a possible trade partner for Sale?

    They certainly have the talent and would be even more desperate to get the job done.

    I suggested this way back (post 120 I think) but was quickly shot down by others, including Rabbit. Evidently there is something to the " Sox won't deal with the Cubs" thing.

  3. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Oct 5, 2016 -> 07:22 AM)
    Boston will not want Sale now that Porcello has emerged to join Price at the top of the rotation. They will want a 3-4 starter and bullpen pieces. They will probably trade Holt, Young or Shaw w some 2nd tier prospects to fill the few holes they have. They did move Moncada to 3B and Devers is behind him so they could move one of them if needed.

    This will depend tremendously on how well they play in the playoffs.

  4. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Oct 3, 2016 -> 02:35 PM)
    Yeah, Navarro had a hot bat for a short while early on, and then sucked. He's also horrible at pitch-framing.

    Even a mediocre CF who can hit, such as Cespedes or Fowler, would be a huge improvement over what we had this year.

    See, we do agree on a couple things at least! :cheers

    Now getting Cespedes or Fowler may prove to be difficult.

  5. QUOTE (shipps @ Oct 3, 2016 -> 02:20 PM)
    See, now this is a mature and respectful poster. No that it matters but I love this kind of attitude towards discussion.

    Thank you Shipps.

    I just think that you can have differing opinions without being rude or insulting towards each other. Who knows whether one, both or neither one of us is right. I definitely do not consider myself a baseball "expert", just a fan expressing my thoughts.

  6. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Oct 3, 2016 -> 01:36 PM)
    Good God, that's an awful argument.

    If you think that Austin Jackson's defense in CF will make him an asset to this team, despite the 85 OPS+ that he put up this season, we'll just have to agree to disagree. Dude was a -0.1 bWAR this year.

    It's also extremely difficult to get decent OPS out of a catcher. I think that re-signing Avila is about the best that the Sox can expect to do.

    Agree to disagree then, all's good! I've always been a defense first kind a guy and sometimes stats don't tell the whole story. I don't believe my arguement is all that awful, but to each his own.

    It wouldn't take that much to improve over Navaro. Personally, and I don't know who exactly is available, but I think a 2nd base improvement is the way to go. I'm not impressed with Lawrie and have decided that Saladino is a better utility guy.

  8. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Oct 3, 2016 -> 01:01 PM)
    You completely missed my point.

    The Sox have a more dire need for OPS than defense. It's A LOT easier to do that with a corner OF than another CF. So, as much as I like Eaton in RF, he's most likely going to have to move back to CF for the Sox to get better offensively.

    No, I didn't miss your point. I just think that the wrong way to go about it is to move a competent right fielder to another position that he's not so good at. We need to get better as a team and as much of a problem as ops is, team defense matters too. I would rather exhaust more resources on finding a competent cf then moving what is currently a strength of this team.

    When the Sox were playing well this season they had Austin Jackson in cf and Eaton in right. I'm not about to argue that it was THE reason they played well, but a good part of it. I would not mind at all if Austin Jackson was the starting cf next year. I much prefer that providing we can improve ops elsewhere. Heck, just having Morneau as your dh and Anderson at ss for the full season helps along with finding a more competent catcher than Navaro.

  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 3, 2016 -> 12:12 PM)
    Need a true CF so you can keep Eaton in RF

    Most definitely agree. I see posts that have Eaton moving back to center when acquiring another outfielder. That is just plain foolish. Adam Eaton is a gold glove caliber right fielder and a mediocre at best center fielder, you don't mess with that.

    I have no idea how they are going to acquire a legitimate major league center fielder, but if Adam Eaton is your starting center fielder next season I will be greatly disappointed.

    This probably would of been a disaster, but the times that they started Eaton in center and Avi in right the last couple of months, I think I would of rather that they switched and tried Avi in center and left Eaton in right. The worst that happened would of been a few more losses due to center field defense, but then we might have a protected draft pick. Who knows, the odds are small, but maybe something would of just "clicked" with Avi in center. Seeing the ball better or something. After all, some scout somewhere thought he could play center when we traded for him.

  10. QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Oct 3, 2016 -> 11:26 AM)
    Urias is ready to contribute and is entrenched in the Dodgers rotation, with team control for the next 6 years, that's where his value comes from. You can no longer say Quintana has the edge in team friendly contract.

    I wouldn't say a 1.40 ERA in the hitter friendly PCL league as a 19 year old, then pitching 80 innings in the big leagues earning a 2 WAR season, a fastball touching 95MPH, K/9 inning touching 10, again as 19 year old not proving anything. Is he an ace now? no. Is he better than Q next year, probably not. But there is no reason to think he isn't as soon as 2018. So why exactly would Dodgers pay a package featuring a stud along with other top prospects for Q? Also consider the fact that Q is tremendously under appreciated outside of the Sox org. No GM in history would ever do that deal.

    Potential to be what Quintana already is does not mean he is worth more. They both have friendly contracts.

    You simply have to ask yourself if you would trade one for the other straight up. I would not trade Quintana for Urias straight up, the Dodgers would have to add something. Maybe not a lot of something, but something. Q is simply more proven.

  11. Thanks for the recap Lip, much appreciated.

    Robin did say one thing yesterday that I hope is very true. He said that the team needed a new voice in the clubhouse. That "could" do more for this team than any trade or free agent acquisition. Whether or not Rick Renteria can provide that spark, or is even considered a "new" voice or not remains to be seen.

    I can only have hope that this is the answer.

  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 1, 2016 -> 06:42 PM)
    If you go to the Quad Cities, you won't see any Sox merchandise. Cubs and Cards dominate...which makes no sense geographically, but the Cards have the winning tradition as well as an extensive radio network. The Twins are third, probably a tie with Brewers and KC for fourth.

    I call B.S. I get to the quad cities fairly often and I see just as much Sox gear as any other team, if not more.

  13. QUOTE (59th street @ Sep 24, 2016 -> 09:11 PM)
    I would like to see Omar Vizquel get a shot as the next manager. Highly respected, fluent in Spanish and English. Very heady player who is known for being fundamentally sound. Base running and situational approach likely to be strengths. He has stated he does want to manage and has been a base coach with Detroit past few years. I hope he gets a shot at an interview with the Sox. I think he will be a great manager.

    I kind of like this idea.

  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 14, 2016 -> 12:14 PM)
    People pay up and Opening Day is usually a sellout or close. Game 2, not so much. It's something done to protect the people who bought tickets specifically for Opening Day.

    That's all well and good but it isn't very smart in my opinion.
