Thanks, I'm no doctor but I'm no stranger to bursitis either. I've had problems on and off throughout my life. I know what the bursa sacs are there for but I assumed they went in there, cut them open and drained the infection. If that isn't how it's done let me know. That basically confirmed what I thought. Thanks. His shoulder surgery was as minor as possible and he had it because he had severe bursitis. There was only normal wear for a pitcher in there, no structural damage or anything was in the press release. It wouldn't have affected his max velocity or anything. It does make sense that he had trouble getting it going early in games in 2018. This year his UCL was damaged so that would explain struggling to top 93-94 for him. Whoever gets him after the Sox is going to get the best version. That graph shows Rodon's fastball velocity pretty consistent from 2017-18.

When Benetti showed the injury to Fulmer the following half inning he said that Jay was unavailable last night with an injury or something like that. It takes a special amount of buffoonery to equal one Ricky Renteria in ineptitude. I still can't decide whether Renteria or Matheny is/was a worse manager. (I'm talking about solely in game strategy here)

IIRC he was having trouble getting loose early in games in 2018 but by the 5th inning was still pumping it 97-99 mph, but he didn't have the same bite on his slider. This year his velocity was down but the slider was awesome before his UCL snapped.

84-89 losses IMO. IIRC they see a lot of Detroit in September.

Who has more lives during this rebuild? Covey or Engel? Anyway, this is too bad because Fulmer actually looked like an MLB reliever this time around. We'll know the rebuild is over when Covey and Engel are DFA.

People are saying Trubisky looks awful at camp, and it isn't just against the 1st team defense. Listening to Rich Campbell reporting on the Score from yesterday. Given that Trubisky plays QB for the Bears, I'm always going to lean towards skepticism. My cousin's husband and I are pretty good friends, and he used to be a Lions fan and he said he'd never watch another game until they win the SB. Similarly, I won't believe the Bears ever have a great QB until that player is inducted into the HOF. It's really hard to understand what the standard of a good enough QB is when you've never watched one week in and week out. I keep fluctuating between Peyton Manning and someone like Donovan McNabb but idk if even McNabb is a HOFer.

Where's Didi going to play? Didi is interesting if you're moving Anderson to OF. Madrigal will play 2B on tax day 2020. JDM bats right handed.

It's really a bummer that Rodon and Kopech got injured. Rodon was starting to show why he was the 3rd OA pick in 2014 and Kopech looked really good before he got injured. Had they been healthy this year, with all else being equal, I think they could have finished in the low to mid 80s in wins. They might still win 74-77 games as is, which is still progress. This stretch is the anomaly, not the norm IMO from this year. The lineup has been decimated by losing its best hitters.

Don't forget Lopez has seemed to rediscover his 2018 form and Cease is learning on the job. He just had his best start in the Majors. I think they'll end up in the 9-12 range when everyone gets healthy. Injuries are killing them. Not to mention there is a slim possibility Robert gets called up.

What's more important in the OF? Having a CF with elite speed like Robert or the RF having a cannon for an arm? Robert has both. I'm wondering because this lineup really needs some balance, and it might be easier to find a lefty in a guy who plays CF at the moment. Also, the more I think about it, the more I think Abreu isn't returning unless he's super cheap and his salary can be justified riding the pine a lot more.

They're not mutually exclusive. The Sox were decimated by injuries this year. Had everyone been healthy all season, I think they would be hovering around .500 They've rarely had Moncada, Eloy and Anderson in the lineup simultaneously and on 8/31/2018 Rodon and Kopech were the Sox two best SP. That's hard to overcome. With all else being equal and perfect health, the Sox would probably finish somewhere in the range of 77 to 85 wins. As currently constituted, 78 wins is probably their ceiling, and they might reach it anyway. The 5-14 stretch they've been on since the ASB is the anomaly, not the 1st half. They're not actually this bad. They're probably a 74-79 win team but this stretch makes it look worse than it is. Anderson and Eloy are two of their 4 best offensive players and they were both out for a majority of that stretch. Abreu and Moncada couldn't do it all by themselves. It put extra pressure on the pitching staff, which lead to a cascading effect that ends up with a 19 game stretch where a team goes 5-14. Yes, I realize their Pythagorean W-L was always awful but that was when they'd have games where they'd lose by 10+ runs because scrubs like Covey, Santana et al were pitching in those games. Pythagorean W-L doesn't always tell the whole story, but it is useful over large sample sizes. It can be skewed by having a few really bad pitchers.

Glasnow is out for the season and Snell might only return if they make the playoffs. Even then, he'd probably only be available as a bullpen piece. They're pretty crippled. Losing Glasnow in June wounded them but losing Snell in addition might be mortal.

@Look at Ray Ray Run I enjoy your insight from having played the game at a fairly high level as well. I look at the game from a pure analytical and scientific POV because I haven't played since little league due to physical issues. You bring a unique perspective and it is greatly appreciated. However, you have to give us math nerds some credit as well. There is a place for us in the game, too. You can come off very arrogant at times. I know I can too but I'm not doing it on purpose.

Yeah unless you're the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox or Cubs and can spend into the luxury tax from time to time, sustainable success isn't realistic anymore. Every organization is pretty much on the the same page with player value so there aren't those little nuanced ways to keep a window open for a decade or more. I don't think a repeat of the 90s-00s Braves is happening again any time soon. Anyway, since Madrigal just got to AAA Thursday, I'd call up Robert on 8/19 or so and Madrigal(and Collins) in September.
