They just don't offer him arbitration. That is it. He becomes a FA at that point. It happens all of the time to injured pitchers with one or two seasons of control left that have had TJS.
-
I'm with you, but you have the timeline wrong. He isn't a FA until after the 2021 season. If things go well with him should you keep him, you still have him for the 2021 season. I'm tired of waiting for him to get healthy, but there are organizations that waited forever for ace quality pitchers before finally saying goodbye.

You kind of have a built in buffer because of the timing of Rodon's TJS. Rodon can return and take over for Kopech when he gets shut down. Pitchers coming of TJS tend to struggle with command, so honestly I'm not sure Kopech shouldn't go down to Charlotte out of ST with the idea that he comes back up when either a) he gets his command issues settled and b) after June 1st when they get a year of service time back.

Not necessarily. I'm not sure if you need a draft if you have a bonus cap similar to the international rules. You pool the players together and say each team has x amount of dollars based on previous year's standings. The worst team gets the most money and the WS champion gets the least. Sure, the top American prospect could sign with the WS champ, but that would take up a majority of their pool and they wouldn't get much else out of the class. You could also institute rules that prevent teams from talking to players until May 1st.

Fucking hell, walked the leadoff guy on 4 pitches

Official NHL COVID season thread
Jack Parkman replied to southsider2k5's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I thought they could have received more, but Nylander has crazy upside and they have at least 5 D with similar or better upside than Jokiharju. I'm going to let this play out before tearing Stan a new asshole for this one. Kneejerk reaction was ew though. -
If you look at tv ratings they get higher with dynasties than with competitive balance. It is weird, because I am with you. I don't like the lack of competitive balance either. I do maintain the thought that the leagues have overexpanded. I'm not happy that the NHL is going from 30 to 32 teams, I thought they should have just moved the Coyotes from Phoenix to Las Vegas. They wouldn't even have had to change the team name. There are already teams struggling to draw fans in every sport.

Me too. He's about to become an absolute monster. I think he has a chance to put up Trout numbers at his peak. Moncada vs. Robert is going to be an interesting debate when it is all said and done. They're both going to be among the top players in baseball when they reach FA, so it will be interesting which guy they decide to keep. If I were them, I'd keep Moncada and make the decision about a year from Robert's impending FA.

Has anyone seen what Tony Clark said today? He wants to do away with the draft. Honestly, if he goes to court with it I think he'll win. They could still do a signing pool based on the average dollars spent in the draft, and I honestly think it might work, just like it does with the International FA. It would be interesting how sports would change if amateurs were free agents. It might hurt competitive balance a ton, but with what the NBA is showing us it seems like the fans prefer dynasties to competitive balance. If that is the case, it may lead to contraction in leagues instead of expansion, with less desirable locations no longer viable for sports. I've long been of the opinion that all sports leagues have overexpanded. Somewhere between 24-28 teams is the ideal number. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/mlbpa-director-tony-clark-voices-opposition-to-draft/

Sox claim 1b A.J. Reed off waivers AND send him to majors

if they have xBA, they should have xBABIP somewhere in that formula, based on LD% EV, launch angle, barrels, etc. -

Yeah, offense. I'm pretty skeptical of mid-career aberrations, until they prove to have staying power. If McCann's BABIP was normalized(to xBABIP) , what would his numbers be? If McCann can prove that he's now a .270/.330/.750 hitter, then yeah, Grandal would be a waste of resources. Catcher is last on my priority list. They need to stabilize the rotation, first and foremost. -

I'm 100% fine with McCann being here. He's great at calling games and helping the pitchers. I just think that he's probably going to revert to career norms next year. I'd like to keep him here, but as a backup and Giolito's personal catcher. He brings plenty of value to the team. I just don't think he can be trusted to take the lion's share of the starts behind the plate next year. Everyone should know that to say I'm not a fan of Collins is an understatement. -
I have Vaughn and Madrigal in a dead heat right now. Vaughn has a tiny pro sample size, so I'm not ready to put him ahead of Madrigal just yet, as Madrigal is raking in AA.

Do you trust McCann to do this again with the bat? I don't. McCann is having a career year but I think he's a backup long-term. Grandal and McCann would make a great tandem. -

Agreed. And for petes sake sign Grandal. With Grandal amd McCann they wouldn't have to worry about catcher for 3-4 seasons. -
This is funny. Did anyone else besides the old timers get why I said "Where's our Mike Trout?" For those that don't know, I'm going to go into the wayback machine and send you the link. @Chisoxfn Where in the hell is the "Where's our Liriano?" Thread???? How is that not in the SoxTalk classics section? C'mon, that was an all-timer.

I don't disagree with you, I still think there is some incompetence here. IMO the best case scenario with Collins is him being a platoon player. Anyone who posts here should know that I haven't thought that Collins is an MLB player for more than a year now. To say I'm not a fan is an understatement, lol.
-
One of these things is not like the other; one of these things doesn't belong. Moncada and Robert can throw leather and have blazing speed, Eloy can do neither. With the bat, sure, Eloy belongs in the same league as the other two. But as overall baseball players? Moncada and Robert blow Eloy away.
-
For comparison, since June 1: Trout: .315/.418/.674 Moncada: .370/.435/.722
-
^^^^^ I think that the Sox know Collins is strictly a platoon player. Castillo will start vs. LHP and Collins vs. RHP. Whomever is on the bench is the backup catcher for that game.
-
I'm fine with that he needs a bit of a break. He's been facing top lineups for a month straight.
-
Would Giolito go Saturday or Sunday? Given that he's not starting he's probably only throwing one inning and a maximum of 25 pitches. Isn't that only the rough equivalent of a side session? Sunday would be full rest.

Will Nick "The Little Magician" Madrigal be called up this year?
Jack Parkman replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They called Beckham "Bacon" because Ozzie butchers the English language with his thick Latin American accent. When Ozzie would say "Beckham" it sounded like he was saying "bacon" -
If they chose the ASG rosters today would he still make the team?
-
Madrigal should be joining Robert in Charlotte at the very least. I'm torn. The longer the season goes without Robert and Madrigal being at the MLB level, the more I'm willing to let them wait until next Tax Day. In an ideal world, both Madrigal and Robert would be joining the team in Oakland Friday. 8/1 is the absolute latest I'd call them up. If it goes past then, then just wait until 4/15/2020.
