+ infinity. Sums up my thoughts exactly, except for the cheap/incompetent part. I'd say they were both cheap AND incompetent. Their player valuation is too far removed from reality to think they'll ever pull it off. Machado is a steal for 10/300, and the fact they didn't see that is well, both cheap and incompetent.

On what planet do you live? https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodonca01.shtml He's basically Quintana 2017-present the past few years.
-
KW deserved to be fired in 2009, Hahn in 2016.
-
C'mon Rodon was supposed to be a slam dunk ace by now and he hasn't proven he can stay healthy When he has pitched he's done so as a back-end starter. He's very similar to Floyd and Vazquez right now, imo. All of the talent, no results.
-
The bottom line is that Hahn is somewhere on the spectrum of lying through his teeth to disingenuous, and he's insulting the intelligence of the die-hard fanbase with his comments.

+1 Nice post.

For as much as we laugh at the Cubs for the Quintana trade, I think by the time it is all said and done that it will come out pretty even. I'm not expecting Cease to stay healthy, and to be honest I'm expecting Kopech and Cease to be the South Side version of Prior and Wood.

He was talking about the insiders, not the FO. The FO was confident so so that leaked over through the insiders. What nobody counted on was that the Sox confidence was based on delusions of grandeur.

While I completely agree with your attitude about it, I can't pull it off myself. I don't have a family pulling me away from this stuff, I don't even have a gf or anything and because of my personal situation, I have a metric ton of time to kill. There are other hobbies I enjoy, but they're all weather dependent. If the conditions aren't just right, I can't do them. The one hobby I do enjoy that isn't weather dependent, I'm having trouble enjoying lately because I'd have to take time away from other hobbies in order to get what I want out of it. I've put it completely on the backburner until I can make the necessary sacrifices in other areas to enjoy it the way I want to. In the end, I keep coming back to sports because you don't control the schedule of games and when it's on, it's on.

SS2k5, while you probably have the healthiest attitude about sports fandom here, some of us(myself included) are just waaaaay too emotionally invested. I've tried multiple times to adopt your attitude about sports, I just can't pull it off. How do you do it? I have a hard time missing a game, be it any sport I follow. I'm ok missing about 30-40 games a year when it comes to baseball, but other than that it is really tough for me.

Maybe you're right. I think the most likely answer is that they're doing analytics half-assed because they think it is too expensive to do correctly. Just my cynical viewpoint right now. They probably won't just hire someone who knows what they're doing because they cost too much. Right now, it's hard to see how this doesn't all go back to dollars and cents.

This is probably accurate, sadly.

Who is available in 2020? Looking ahead to the future

You're so right. That would be trying for a double instead of a HR once again. They have to look at it like Sabermetrics. The value of a HR is greater than the value of a double, even if you strike out more often. Also, when swinging for the fences you might accidentally hit a double or triple here or there. If you're only trying to hit a double, you're going to get a single or make an out more often, and the chances of accidentally running into a HR are slim. -

God I'd hate Vaughn. Would be a typical White Sox play it safe pick. -
Probably the truth. The reality is though that Machado was the better fit organizationally, and they blew it. If the Sox have any strength in their farm, it is OF prospects. It was probably always Machado or bust people.
-
Probably not, but that had to more with Theo fucking up than anything else. Quintana had clearly regressed as a pitcher and the Sox still got a return like he was pitching at 2015-16 levels. That was the peak of his career. You can't count on that. I mean, we were all expecting something like what the Archer to Pirates deal ended up netting the Rays. If you would have asked me in June 2017 if the Sox were going to get someone as good as Eloy in that deal, I would have asked if I could have some of what you're smoking. We were expecting a return similar to what Yelich got for the Brewers. Eloy/Cease ALMOST makes up for Tatis. Almost.

When it boils down to it, in 2015 the Sox and the Padres were pretty much the same team. A stars and scrubs roster, that had traded valuable prospects to fill holes with short term rentals and expensive veteran FA. The Padres, so far, have done everything better than the Sox. The Padres have a better farm system than the Sox despite having to entice others to take some of their contracts with assets, and only having one player worth a damn in a rental situation. The Sox had 3 players on long-term deals, one of them being a top 5 pitcher in the game, and they STILL couldn't do better than the Padres at building a farm system. The Padres also blew it up earlier. Imagine what the Sox could have received in trade if they decided to sell in the 2015-16 offseason? To put the cherry on top, they stole Tatis for the corpse of James Shields and they stole Machado from the Sox by operating in stealth mode.
-
This is why the rebuild is doomed. They haven't been able to draft anyone worth a shit even with top 10 picks year after year. Rodon Fulmer Collins Were all T10 And they all look like massive disappointments, with Collins and Fulmer approaching bust level. The more I hear about Madrigal the more I hate that pick. You're supposed to try to hit a HR with your 1st rounder and they're content with a single or double. It's pretty clear that JR is incredibly risk averse and surrounds himself with like-minded people.
-
Because of this: M'Kay??? I had to take a somewhat positive viewpoint otherwise what is the point????
-
I thought he had valid points, but threw a bit of hyperbole in there. Balta and I were pretty much in agreement in Oct. 2016. I decided to give the FO a pass for their previous fuck up and Balta didn't. It turns out I was the sucker.
-
To stick it to the places for not publicly financing, and to try to scare others into doing so.
-
I don't think they truly expected to compete. They were given this directive from JR and almost had Machado fall into their laps. If it is about money, it comes from JR. We all have to ignore the Sox while JR counts his money during the remainder of his time on this planet.

It is a crime against all that is holy in hockey that he never won at least one Selke.
-
Yeah it's going to be a HUGE problem. Any new stadium anywhere will need to be privately financed, as it should have always been from the beginning. I think you're going to see a slew of sports franchises relocate over the next couple decades.
