Sox at Native Americans 9/19 game thread
Jack Parkman replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2018 Season in Review
No shit. Chief Wahoo was really bad though, had bright red skin and was about the same level of offensive as the name of the DC NFL team. Good for Cleveland for doing away with him, and good for Thome for using the C on his HOF plaque. -

No, but ownership and the people hiring the football talent(or lack thereof) had a lot do do with everything from roughly 1990-present. I'll give Papa Bear the benefit of the doubt from 1950-83 when he died on the luck factor, but the McCaskeys and their buddy Ted Phillips have been around since they fired Ditka, and their record over that span is horrible. They're picking the GMs, and I'm not sure they know what they're looking for. Pace has done a really good job for the most part, I won't deny that, as they probably had the worst talent in football when he took over. I was never a fan of the Trubisky pick, and am still waiting for the evidence to appear that will change my mind. He showed more in the 2nd half Monday night than he had in the previous 13.5 games he played in. A step in the right direction, but still not enough evidence to upgrade from suck to meh on the Bears QB Suck-O-Meter. To answer your question, each regime has nothing to do with the previous one. However we have to look at the lowest common denominator, which is ownership and Ted Phillips. I don't trust them to identify football people with a keen eye for talent. Maybe going back 70 years is too harsh, but starting with the hiring of Wanne prior to the 1993 season is fair game. The huge what if moment is the 1999 draft, where I believe Hatley wanted Culpepper, they traded down with Washington, and then Washington screwed them by trading the pick in front of them to Minne for Brad Johnson, who sniped Culpepper. They then panicked and drafted McNown, who probably wouldn't have been drafted until the mid-2nd round in any other scenario. -

Love the thread title. Should read the same when referring to the DC NFL team as well. -
Garfein podcast, in depth with Callis
Jack Parkman replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
Listening won't make you feel any better. I was ok with where they are even with all of the injuries before I listened to this podcast. It makes it hard to see them ever getting out of the hole with this group. It seems they might be in perpetual rebuild mode until further notice. A very deflating listen. -

Theoretically, yes. In that case it would be an exception. I am talking about mostly unproven players via the draft or with less than 32 games of starting experience. I have zero faith in anyone associated with this organization to properly scout the QB position until they hit on one. However, if by some chance the Bears traded for or signed an experienced, proven QB I'd assume they're about to fall off of a cliff performance wise or get hurt because the Bears aren't allowed to have nice things at that position. When there is a track record of failure this long at some point it isn't bad luck anymore. It is pretty hard to just have "bad luck" for 70 years. -

Yes, but the track record is much longer with the Bears. They brought up guys like Rowand, Crede, Maggs, Konerko, basically most of the core hitters of the 2005 team was from within the org. They CAN do it, yes, it has been 15 years but the Bears haven't had a decent QB in 70 seasons. Kind of hard to do. -
If you deal with highly annoying Cub Trolls, then that option is much more appealing than it otherwise would be just to get them to STFU.

I cannot even begin to fathom how someone who voted for Bernie Sanders in the Dem primary could even consider voting for Der Trumpenfuhrer in the GE. It boggles the mind however horrible anyone though HRC was, Der Trumpenfuhrer takes the cake.

????? What is so hard about this statement: All Bears QBs have sucked for at least 30 years, if not 70 years. Therefore, all Bears QB's suck until proven otherwise. The bar is so low they have to prove even a minimal level of competence before you can even consider the idea they are or might be good at football. There are 3 steps in the Bears QB evaluation process, rather than two for other teams: Bears QB Evaluation Flowchart: Suck=> Meh=>Good to great Remainder of NFL QB Evaluation Flowchart: Good to Great ^ Meh => Suck This is the K.I.S.S. version On another note, fanbase expectation of winning affects evaluation, so fans are much more critical of a guy like Trubisky than Moncada. With the Sox, t the team and fans can afford to be patient because there is no expectation of winning. Time is ticking with the Bears on Mitch's rookie deal so they must take advantage immediately. Therefore, fans will be more critical of Trubisky than anyone on the Sox. -

No, you misunderstood what I said. I said when evaluating a Bears QB you start out from "this guy sucks" and evaluate from there. They suck until proven otherwise. Simple as that. Too much history that says that Bears QBs suck. I give zero benefit of the doubt with anyone playing QB for the Bears, and give zero shits what anyone thinks. It is my schtick and I'm sticking to it. Mitch has to prove he doesn't suck, and he sucks until proven otherwise. What is so hard to understand about that? No matter where a QB is drafted by the Bears, the default is "this guy sucks" until they don't suck anymore....Right now Trubisky has been anywhere from Suck to Meh on the suck-o-meter. I reserve the right to change my mind when the evidence presents itself. Luckman in the 40s was blind squirrel finds nut syndrome. -

Three (positive) thoughts: 1. Without neutering the things that Mitch has to do as a pro QB, Nagy should cut down the playbook until the game slows down for Trubisky. Add a little more each week as Mitch shows he's ready for it. Mitch looked a lot better in the 2nd half than in the 1st. I hope it slows down for him sooner rather than later. 2. Out of the 2017 1R QB draft class, Trubisky has the most pro tape out of all of them. Watson has started 8 games, Mahomes has started 3 games, and Trubisky has started 14. Mitch could be further along in his development process because opposing DCs know what he's doing more than they do for Watson/Mahomes. We need to hold off judgment on them until they've been around the league a bunch. That being said, Trubisky sucks until proven otherwise because he plays QB for the Chicago Bears. (not really, but this is my schtick) 3. This defense is going to be special if they stay healthy, (knock on wood) Fuller needs to turn around and look for the ball. He seems to have become lazy after getting paid. He's covering well but his lack of awareness of the ball is astounding currently. He would have had two picks last night if he had any clue where the ball was. -

As far as I'm concerned McMahon doesn't count. Ive watched classic games he wasn't that good. He was a game manager when that is what they needed. He's on the Cutler level of QBs. Good enough to start but not much more. They've had one decent QB in 100 years of existence. It is a sick joke. -

This is truth. I told my buddies this earlier. Unless Trubisky really figures it out thir ceiling is 7-9 wins per season, and that is with everyone healthy. -
Q: if the Sox could sweep the Cubs, knock them to the WCG and the Sox end up drafting 7th, or you lose all 3 gms vs the Cubs and draft 4th, which do you choose?

Race for the worst 2018 record (Top 5 pick) again

Wrong. The Tigers picked first last year. Therefore they have the tiebreaker. Sox have to be 1 game worse. -
Taking a hiatus at the end of the baseball season
Jack Parkman replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'm sticking around. Last weekend was really brutal as a fan between Kopech and the Bears collapse and had me questioning why I even care about sports. I just decided that I would make other choices when I had the opportunity to, but I'm still gonna pay attention. I haven't been posting as much, I'll still be around but if I can do other things I enjoy, I wont hesitate to go do that. Mods, can you close this thread? Thanks, Parkman -

Yeah, with the uncertainty about Crawford, it's hard to see them as anything more than a bottom 5 team in the league. Even if Toews/Saad have bounce back seasons it probably still isn't enough to get them anywhere near the playoffs. It wouldn't shock me if it takes 100 points to get in in the West. Just a ton of really solid teams. They had 99 in 2011 and almost missed. It took a loss by the Wild on the last day of the season for them to qualify. -

Yeah, they should have just said he was suffering from Post-Concussion in March. So dumb to get his name dragged through the mud like that. Regardless, Crow is only 2 years older than me, so I hope for his sake that his quality of life is ok regardless of whether or not he is able to suit up for the Hawks again. Post-Concussion sucks, and he should get some counseling for dealing with his symptoms in as positive of a manner as he can. -
And this is also why Kopech was brought up, despite his injury. He had to build up his innings. Honestly, I think the Sox got played a bit on the service time game. You win some, you lose some. Kopech probably knew that something was wrong weeks ago, and tried to pitch through it until he was called up. The guy had nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing that. He won on this one. The only way Kopech wasn't going to get called up in September was if he continued to get bombed and walk the world. That didn't happen, so his gamble paid off. Kopech would have been an idiot to say anything about his elbow until he got called up or he couldn't pitch and his velo was way down.

You don't give up on a player with Moncada's potential after one poor season. He's one of those guys you just have to ride out the storm on and if he busts, so be it. You can't take the chance of selling him for a horrible return and he puts it all together in his next stop. GMs lose jobs over that stuff.

Both are true. The assumption is Trubisky sucks until proven otherwise because he plays QB for the Chicago Bears. If evidence presents itself that he doesn't suck I'll say so. Go read the Anderson thread. I'll gladly change my mind when evidence points to me being wrong. Until I get that evidence, he sucks. The "wait and see" approach is twofold. 1) evidence presents itself that he doesn't suck. 2) evidence presents itself that he's good. It shouldn't have to be a 2 step process but the franchise has set the bar that low. -

Covey is so bipolar. At times he looks like a decent back end starter and others he looks like AAAA fodder, and there is virtually nothing in between.
