  1. Not anymore. Those years of cost control are too valuable. The days of teams moving T100 prospects at the deadline for players that don't have at least 2.5 seasons of control and a track record are over. This is the market value for a rental, for top players available. We don't have to like it, but that is the way it is. This is why it was imperative that the Sox picked a lane in the 16-17 offseason. If they waited until now, they wouldn't they wouldn't be able to sniff a Moncada or Kopech, let alone both, in a Sale trade. It almost isn't worth it to trade established MLB talent for prospects anymore. I think pure baseball trades are going to make a return. Scouting is as good as it ever has been. Year after year, the return for top talent at the deadline and in the offseason becomes worse and worse. Eventually, something has to give on the contending side. These teams can't be allowed to have their cake and eat it too. It will eventually become bad for the league. In the meantime, scouting amateur talent becomes incredibly important, especially for small and mid market teams. Look at what the Marlins got for their players this offseason. Yelich should have had a better return than Eaton, but he didn't. The Sox don't get Rutherford last year if they don't include Kahnle.
  2. ???? Britton has 15 innings this year and is coming off injury and 3 seasons of absolute dominance. Also, I don't think anyone will pick up Soria's 10M option, no matter how well he's pitched this year. For all intents and purposes, Soria is a rental too. I know a 2.89 ERA isn't an 0.54 ERA, but it is still really good, even for a reliever. Britton has shown himself to be among the best relievers in the game. You can't say that Soria will get anywhere close to that return.
  3. Britton and Soria are nowhere close to on the same level. Most of the relievers traded aren't going to return real prospects. I hope that in the near future teams hold their players at the deadline rather than trade them for a whole lot of nothing. With the way contending teams are being tightwads with their prospects, I hope sellers decide collectively that if you aren't trading something decent, we're not trading them. I'd like to see the 2019 deadline where nothing happens unless teams start parting with prospects of value again. Get in a staring match until someone blinks. Fan/media pressure will make the contending teams blink.
  4. I haven't paid much attention to the NFL since the Draft. Please forgive me if I forgot if a player not on the Bears moved teams or not, regardless of how good that player is. A lot of players change teams in the offseason, especially in the NFL. The fact that I admitted that publicly means that I'm secure in my knowledge of the league, and football in general. I have some unpopular opinions and I'm not afraid to voice them. I'm plenty secure in my knowledge of football. Out of the four major sports leagues, the only one I follow casually is the NBA, and that is mostly because the league is broken because players have become wimpy, and would rather leave and create "super teams" to win titles instead of staying put stick it out. It hurts the competitiveness of the league, especially in a league where one player means so much. Furthermore, most teams have zero chance of signing the best players when they reach free agency. So if you're not a team with nice weather and a large city, forget being a player in the free agency market.
  5. Oi. I hate a pitch to contact guy like Gomez coming in vs. Upton. Upton Ks a lot, so I honestly would have rather stuck with Minaya.
  6. We can thank Cordell's collarbone for Engel's presence on the MLB roster. I can't stand his noodle arm in CF, either, he has great range in CF and that is his only asset.
  7. lol. Don't speak too soon. When the Sox play the Angels they seem to give the Halos grief each and every time. I'm not complaining, I love it actually. Been that way since 05.Where's Doug Eddings when you need him? I think they should pick up some guys on 1-2 year deals that they can flip when prospects are ready, regardless of W-L record, should they strike out on Machado/Harper.
  8. This is why they should bring up Kopech and Jimenez after the TDL if they have spots open for them. If they could really get going in August and September, especially with the strides Giolito and Rodon are making, they could then attempt to convince either Machado or Harper to come here and actually have a compelling argument that they are a team on the rise. Do I think either will come here? No. I do expect them to try. Once Eloy and Kopech come up, the tank is off and it is time to pick up real wins, and not ones of the tank variety. I don't think even if they perform well in August and September they aren't going to be anywhere close to out of the top 10, so they shouldn't have to worry about losing a 1st rounder if they become so lucky as to convince Machado or Harper to come here.
  9. Hopefully the umps realize that Moncada has a better grasp of the strike zone than they do sooner rather than later. Moncada HR!! Yess All aboard!!!
  10. Nah, not really. Autistic people usually are very logical. Tend to call superstition BS. Too bad. just ended. It would have been hilarious to see Rodon have a NH but Sale doesn't . I can't believe Sale hasn't pulled one off yet , to be honest.
  11. if he's going to pull it off, he's going to do it whether Bennetti mentions it or not. I do not believe in the jinx
  12. Yeah, I remember that now. Everyone makes mistakes ?‍♂️
  13. Oh crap, I thought that Omar was on 1B. My bad then.
  14. Actually, that was a good contact play as it avoided the DP, and kept the chance for the big inning alive. Unfortunately, Delmoncico flew out to CF and Omar is on 2nd.
  15. At least 3/4 members of the LOB aren't there anymore.(I'm not sure about Earl Thomas, but I don't think he's there either, I thought he was released and signed with Dallas) I'd be more surprised if Seattle's defense was top 10, than if it was bottom 10. Russell Wilson will have to carry that team.
  16. I buy the "trade was close, but fell apart at the end" conspiracy theory. He wasn't at the Hospital, he was on notice in case he had to pack his bags.
  17. I think he should be a sinker/slider guy to be honest. If you have a low spin rate, that makes for a better sinker. I've been watching Both his curve and slider are above average in terms of break, so why not use the one that misses more bats. When Giolito is on he's a ground ball machine. He might not ever be the power pitcher that most thought, but it doesn't mean he can't be a solid #3-4, with #2 upside. He's probably not going to be a 200 K guy, but more like 160-180 when it is all said and done. But then again, nobody pegged Quintana as a 200 K guy and he's done it once, and settled in at about 180-190.
  18. Honestly, I didn't think he was ready when they called him up, and he shouldn't have been up until around Memorial Day 2018, at the earliest. Not only was there zero reason to start his clock, he could have used more ABs in AAA too.
  19. I think he can miss bats with the 4 seamer if switching from the circle change to the straight change works for him. I think if he needs 95-96 he should have it in his back pocket, if indeed he still has it, and use it for strikeouts. He did throw one at 96.4 this season according to pitch/fx, a so I believe he still has it. also noticed that he has the same problem as Kopech where he loses velocity when he throws the fastball up in the zone.
  20. Yeah, Moncada oozes talent but is really raw for a 23 year old. Most of this has to do with the Sawx rushing him. He didn't get all that much time at the AA and AAA level as maybe he should have.
  21. I wonder if he has a little more in the tank with the fastball. We've seen him reach 96 5-6 times this season so maybe as he gets more comfortable with his mechanics, and being able to throw strikes, he'll be able to let it loose some more.
  22. Adam Engel: Rally Killer. Idk how he hasn't been DFA yet. He's completely useless with the lumber.
