  1. QUOTE (Ranger @ Jul 17, 2010 -> 04:21 PM) Jones won't be going anywhere either. They believe he's been too important in keeping Rios comfortable this year. I love Jones as a backup OF. Horrible BA, but he'll hit the occasional jack and is still very good defensively. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Lillibridge hitting well.
  2. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 17, 2010 -> 04:11 PM) My gut tells me Andruw, though I think Kotsay would be best (not a defensive replacement, slow, and Teahen is left handed) I agree.
  3. With Peavy out, Viciedo hitting the ball relatively well in the bigs, and AJ leaving as a FA this winter, I would guess that Kenny doesn't make any significant deal by the deadline. This team is just too heavily-reliant on its top prospects right now.
  4. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Jul 17, 2010 -> 03:29 PM) I wouldn't be quite so sure that Vicideo goes to Charlotte when Teahan returns....it may be Lillibridge. Not sure if Lilly's going anywhere, but I'd be pretty surprised if Viciedo goes back down. It seems more likely to me that Teahen moves to DH and either Kotsay or Jones goes.
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 16, 2010 -> 06:30 AM) Mark is one of the great examples of players succeeding despite long odds. Drafted in the 38th round (1139th overall) out of a community college, makes it to the majors in less than two years, and wins more games in the current decade then almost any other pitcher in baseball. Awesome. Not to mention succeeding despite having some really mediocre stuff. Command and stones go a long way on the mound.
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 16, 2010 -> 12:20 PM) It's not based on superstition, it's based on the fact that batting lower in the lineup might be relieving some of the pressure from him and helping him get back into a groove. If he continues to hit like this for a few more weeks then you think about putting him back up there but for now, leave him as is. Where one bats in the order often dictates that hitter's approach. For example, #2 hitters are expected to take/foul off more pitches to (1) increase their chances of a walk and (2) give the #3 hitter on deck more pitches to look at. If Ozzie would want Beckham to take more pitches while hitting in the 2-hole, that may screw up his approach again.
  7. I'd keep Beckham where he is. Hell, I'd be hard-pressed to mess with anybody in this lineup right now. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
  8. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 09:33 PM) I've been looking up as many speedy outfielders as I can lately as Pierre seems like a guy who could be replaced. Guys who would look good include Brett Gardner, Andrew McCuthchen, David DeJesus, Chris Young, Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzales, Seth Smith (last 3 all in crowded Colorado outfield) which might mean Brad Hawpe would be good to pick up as a DH type though not exactly an impact bat he's better than Kotsay . Trouble is most of theses guys are still on contending teams, though I'm sure I've overlooked a few players McCutchen would cost us more than Carl Crawford and BJ Upton combined. I'd rather that the Sox just stood pat than move Hudson or Viciedo. Not only do we need those guys to contribute right now, but we'll be needing them in the future as well.
  9. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) Well what might come into play is how Cleveland fans have turned their back on him while in Chicago he is loved. If Thome has any say in this, I doubt that he'd let a few jackass Indians fans taint the memory of his Cleveland days. Thome came up with them, had his best years there, and won two pennants with them. I love the fact that he wore a Sox uni for four seasons, but Jim Thome will always be an Indian.
  10. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 12, 2010 -> 11:58 AM) Wow...that's rough, man. Well, OK, he's not THAT bad ("Sammy Sofa steps up to the plate...").
  11. I liked Hawk in the '80s and early '90s. But he's become really self-indulgent and his shtick has been stretched too far over the past decade or so. He's basically in post-stroke Harry Caray territory now: Not worth a whole lot in the booth anymore, but he's such an ingrained institution that showing him the door would be almost unthinkable at this point. The Sox have one great and one good color commentator (Stone and Farmer, respectively). It's too bad that they don't have the play-by-play talent to match that.
  12. QUOTE (G&T @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 11:01 AM) I'm pretty sure they have insurance on everyone. Or at least everybody that's under a multi-year contract. They would be insane to not insure a pitcher who they owe over $60M to.
  13. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) You can't keep winning games 1-0 and relying on 2 hit shutouts from the pitching staff. That's what a former Sun-Times sportswriter said five years ago. How'd that work out?
  14. The silver lining to this is that we can still win with this rotation.
  15. Glad to not only hear that it's not serious, but that Peavy's also wise enough to take himself out, rather than try to pitch through it.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 06:19 AM) Its 12 AB. If he goes 0-12 with 6 ks his next 12 AB what will people think then? Most likely the same thing that they thought last year, when Lillibridge was a laughingstock.
  17. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 08:09 AM) But if Kenny plans on putting Dunn in RF, oh lawd... Kotsay would likely play RF in that scenario. (Dunn + DeJesus) >> (Kotsay/Jones + Quentin)
  18. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 4, 2010 -> 09:46 AM) The All Star game is such a joke, lol at some of the selections to this game including ours. I literally would not watch or pay attention to any of it if it weren't so f***ing stupid and decided home field advantage in the World Series. Even there though, the only reason i'll have any interest is we're back in the race now. Seriously, no Rios? Screw that, I'm not going to waste my time watching.
  19. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 3, 2010 -> 08:20 PM) JD Drew definitely fits into that category. Before injuries in his St. Louis days, he had a ton of range. He still is a very good RF. He doesn't have the same range he had when he first came up, but he makes up for that because he is actually a very smart OF and takes excellent routes and gets very good reads. If one considers UZR a reliable range metric, Drew's numbers tend to support your case. I had forgotten that he played CF reasonably well in ATL. That said, RFs with Drew's defense are rare and those with Ichiro's are once-in-a-generation players. Realistically, one typically has to choose between better range/less power (e.g., DeJesus) and inferior range/more power (e.g., Quentin).
  20. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 3, 2010 -> 05:09 PM) He said most players with that skillset are all playing CF. However, I worded my response badly and I meant that there are plenty of players with good range and good arms in RF that don't play CF (regardless if they could play CF or not). You said "a ton of range," which implies "great range." Guys like STL-era JD Drew and ATL/KC-era Dye don't fall into that category, IMO.
  21. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 2, 2010 -> 02:00 PM) I know, as I mentioned already. Like I said, I'd probably prefer Quentin over DeJesus in RF if Quentin was making good throws and used his arm as a threat. However, Quentin doesn't come close to hitting his targets half the time. We could really use a RF with a ton of range and a canon arm, we haven't had one for a while. Most players with this skill set play CF. Ichiro is the obvious exception.
  22. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 1, 2010 -> 03:29 PM) While it is not going to happen (unfortunately) we could upgrade the team a LOT more by adding a solid defensive right fielder and moving Quentin to DH, than by just adding Dunn (or Laroche, Berkman, Scott). By Fangraphs numbers, David Dejesus would be an improvement of 14.5 runs on defense compared to Quentin. Add in that he's just been 1.4 runs less valuable than Dunn on offense this year, and that's a glaringly better target, and a lot cheaper. There is very little chance of Quentin being moved to DH. If I'm Kenny and the Royals offered me DeJesus for Quentin straight-up, I'd seriously consider it. Quentin at his best is obviously far superior offensively. The problem is that he's made of glass and has been highly-erratic when he actually has been healthy. DeJesus has a $6M club option for next season.
  23. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 1, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) You don't think this team can handle more ex Royals and ex Nat'l leaguers? I wouldn't dismiss DeJesus simply because he's on the Royals. DeJesus can play all 3 OF positions and has a career .361 OBP and career 108 OPS+. I'd love to have him on the Sox.
  24. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 01:25 PM) The Dunn talks could just be a smoke screen, while KW goes into stealth mode and aqcuires Prince. You never know? I've been suprised before. Milwaukee is going to want a HUGE return package though. We are talking one of Danks or Floyd and Hudson plus more!. . And this is why Prince won't be wearing a Sox uniform any time soon. LaRoche seems like a much better fit for an organization that will be likely moving its best three prospects to the major league roster next season.
  25. QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 12:55 PM) WEDNESDAY, 1:48pm: Nationals GM Mike Rizzo never talked to White Sox GM Kenny Williams about Dunn, tweets MLB.com's Bill Ladson. Meanwhile Ladson's colleague Scott Merkin passes along via Twitter a Rizzo comment made on ESPN's Waddle & Silvy show today: "For us to move [Dunn] will be very painful and it will probably be very painful for the team that wants to acquire him." Here's the audio from ESPN Radio. from mlbtraderumors.com Kenny will strike on a player not so specfic on the radar and will be shocked like always. I'm wondering if Kenny is releasing incorrect info to test the organization for leaks.
