  1. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 09:38 AM) LaRoche and David DeJesus would be nice. I'll stop dreaming now. I wouldn't mind Quentin-for-Dunn, and then trading a couple of prospects for DeJesus. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 09:39 AM) So make a hole to fix a hole? It works for the government, so why not us?
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 08:59 AM) Seriously, the Nats are asking the moon for Dunn, and the Sox don't have the pieces to acquire him. The best thing you can do at this point is to make a smaller addition or two and to tell the Nats to pound sand. We do have the pieces to acquire him, but we'd be stupid to use all of them.
  3. QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 07:56 AM) So... trade a very talented and cheap player under control for 6 years for a very talented and expensive player under control for 3 years. Why not just keep Beckham and use the difference to bring in a quality free agent in the offseason? Pretty much. The only compelling reason to do a trade-and-sign with Dunn would be to avoid a FA bidding war. And even then, you're giving up the best position player prospect the organization has had since Frank. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 08:53 AM) Cowley on the score right now... is saying that Mike Rizzo really likes Carlos Quentin and would want him for Dunn... Dealing Quentin would only make sense if we were selling and not in need of another bat.
  4. The only way that I'd deal Beckham for Dunn would be if Dunn signed a 3-year extension as part of the deal. And even then, I don't know if I'd want to do that deal.
  5. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 08:15 PM) Has anybody noticed that we are a MLB best 16-8 in 1-run games? That's very surprising, given how bad we were over the previous two months.
  6. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 08:06 PM) It was the ultimate no-brainer, and Ozzie proved himself to be just that.
  7. Dunn currently has a 146 OPS+ in 314 PA. Thome has 148 OPS+ in 137 PA this season. Granted, Dunn is young enough to be in the lineup every day and he can play 1B without killing himself. But the point still stands that we could've avoided spending an extra $4.5M and giving up two of our better prospects by re-upping the older, more fragile player with similar offensive output.
  8. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 07:01 PM) 2010: Mark Kotsay Teahen gives Kotsay a run for his money.
  9. QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 06:33 PM) Why am I the only Sox fan that wants absolutely no part of Adam Dunn. I feel like it's an insult to our fan base trading for him when we could have signed Thome this offseason. My wish list is Prince Fielder or Adrian Gonzalez... I know that is unrealistic, but I'm thinking long term contending Agreed with the bolded part.
  10. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 05:38 PM) CST_SOX: Nats writers are reporting Sox have scouts at the Washington game tonight. Multi-player deal?
  11. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) I'd keep Hudson simply because I don't think Sale will be a starter. He might be an option in the bullpen next year but Hudson could be a part of the rotation. Give them Flowers, Morel + A prospect they like. I'd think that Flowers has more value to this organization right now than Hudson. It's not going to be too difficult to find a cheap #5 starter on the FA market this winter. But we're definitely going to need a catcher in March, and a guy who's young, cheap for the next 6 years, and has Flowers' power aren't easy to come by.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 12:10 PM) Beyond that, I strongly doubt the Cubs have the $36 million on hand that it would take to give Carlos Zambrano his outright release. If anything, the Cubs would have to get creative and eat 2-3 bad contracts from a high payroll team to trade Zambrano, because releasing him doesn't make sense. No kidding. Hell, they'll probably have to eat some of that contract as well, but they're not DFAing him and eating the rest of that deal. Especially after they were able to unload Bradley.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 11:45 AM) Yes, we have a chance. But it requires us to basically sell off 2 key parts of our 2011 board without the financial resources to replace them. It's all about that. If I'm the Nats and I get the Hudson + Flowers + some A baller offer, I wait a week or so until the AS break and see if I get a better offer, and if not I'd pull the trigger. This key point is being overlooked it a lot of posts here. Another thing to consider is that, outside of the past 2 1/2 weeks, the Sox have basically been playing like crap. If they revert back to April/May form over the next 3 weeks, Kenny might not be making any acquisitions.
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 08:04 AM) I was wrong about it being his first game back, but right on the rest. Cancer. surgery, recovery, rehab, played again, cancer, broken bone delivering a pitch, out of baseball, and eventually amputation. My God, that's awful.
  15. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 08:57 AM) I love how we are debating whether or not just Santos is worth Dunn. Guess what, any "name" impact player is going to cost our top prospects, thats just how it is. If you want someone like Dunn, or Fielder etc, we are going to have to give up some talent. If the Sox could get Dunn or Fielder to sign a 4-year extension as part of the deal, it might be worth it. But I get the feeling that both of these guys want to test the FA market. And with all of the turnover that will occur next year and the $68M already committed to salary, the Sox are likely going to need both Flowers and Viciedo.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 08:17 AM) Sergio should be a guy with some serious trade value right now if the Sox wanted to make a move for a bat, and they can do so without killing their bullpen for this year since Santos is the 4th guy in it. I think that Santos' value is still somewhat limited at this point. Sure, he's cheap and he looks promising, but he hasn't even been a pitcher for two full years.
  17. Sounds like Dunn wants to test FA next year. Sadly, I just don't see the Sox giving up the pieces to land Dunn.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 08:08 PM) 6 weeks left and counting...she's an amazing person, handling it much better than I would. Congrats! Fatherhood is a wonderful thing. Women are MUCH tougher than we give them credit for. My wife went through 11 hours of labor with no meds.
  19. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 05:10 PM) Bobby Jenks' wife is fine and Bobby will be back in Kansas City. Well, that's good news. Any word on what was ailing her?
  20. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 01:33 PM) It goes up to $9.5 mil if he's traded. So, he's not worth the option, he's just a rental. Thanks, didn't know that. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 04:36 PM) I'd love to get B.J. Upton. If they could instill a work ethic in the kid, you've got the best defensive OF in the majors. His recent spat with Longoria may be the beginning of the end for him in TB. That said, it'd still cost us Hudson, Flowers, and probably Kenny's left nut as well.
  21. LaRoche also has a $7.5M mutual option for next year. Not sure if he'd choose to take it over a multi-year free agency deal, but I doubt that the market pays him that much in 2011. And it also solves our 1B/DH hole next season.
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 11:01 AM) Don't be so sure. You actually think that Kenny is considering picking up the $45M tab on a clubhouse cancer nutcase whose skills have been gradually eroding over the past 5 years, and now is at the point where he's been demoted to the 'pen? Even if the Cubs eat half of his remaining contract, it's still a ridiculously-bad move.
  23. 2004 - age 23, 160 ERA+ 2005 - age 24, 135 ERA+ 2006 - age 25, 136 ERA+ 2007 - age 26, 117 ERA+ 2008 - age 27, 118 ERA+ 2009 - age 28, 119 ERA+ 2010 - age 29, 78 ERA+ (only 9 starts) See a pattern here?
  24. A manager telling the press that he wants his GM to add to his roster suggests that he lacks confidence in his players. So of course Ozzie's going to tell the media that he doesn't want to add anybody.
  25. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jun 27, 2010 -> 10:00 AM) Without a move, Teahan will be our DH when he gets back. Kotsay should be coming off the bench. This is probably the best scenario, with Lillibridge being the odd man out. I'd rather that Viciedo stays up to play 3B, with Vizquel getting ample time at 3B. But with Dayan rotting on the bench since being called up, I don't know if Ozzie would go this way. I don't understand their reasoning at all.
