Thanks for posting. Where did you find this quote? I've always been a Lou fan, but he needs to retire. He's lost his players and he doesn't even seem to care anymore.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) Would be the reason I said longterm instead of current. A power hitting 3b/capable D is much easier to come by and a solid defending, high power/avg 2b is gold. Prolific hitters who play 3B relatively well aren't exactly a dime a dozen. Sox fans have been spoiled by Ventura and Crede, and it's far from a lock that the Sox will land a player near the level of those two for the next decade. Worrying about "wasting" a player like Beckham at 3B doesn't make much sense to me, especially when Quentin and Alexei are the only other two above-average young hitters who will be making an impact after the nucleus of the current offense is dismantled this winter. The Sox need to procure better young hitters period... regardless of what position they play. When they actually draft/sign/trade for the next Robin Ventura, then they can worry about moving Beckham to 2B.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 11:23 AM) I just got back from the Portland area and there was no sunshine. How is it now? It's been unusually cloudy and rainy since about mid-May, but we appear to be breaking out of that now. Sunny and mid-70s today. It's supposed to get up into the mid-80's tomorrow.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 12:18 PM) I want Bacon to be at 2b for the long term. You can get power from your corners pretty easily, but a power+average combo at 2nd base is hard to come by (Utley types) and I think putting what would end up being an average power hitter at 3b is a waste. But until you actually GET that power-hitting 3B, there's no point in moving Beckham to 2B. And I don't see another Ventura or Crede on the horizon. FWIW, I'd rather stick with Beckham/Getz at 3B/2B than go with Fields/Beckham.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 10:15 AM) I dunno, I've never really been on the "Alexei will be a great SS" bandwagon. I've been on the "Alexei will be at least as good as Jose Valentin" bandwagon. Not great defensively, but good enough. And his bat is a plus. I'll take an error-prone Alexei with 20-30 HR power over a defensive-stud 2005-2007 Juan Uribe who can't hit for crap.
-
Wow, the ONE day that I'd be able to actually see the Sox on Fox (no WGN on Comcast out here), I'm going camping. Figures.
-
I wouldn't even think of moving Alexei from SS until next year. And even then, moving Beckham there would create a hole at 3B. Fields has had some nice at-bats lately, but he doesn't appear to be in the organization's long-term plans at this point. Unless Getz completely flames out, I don't see Alexei moving. Even if he plays the position like Jose Valentin, he's still a pretty solid SS.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 09:36 AM) I think 43 is the minimum number, so we need to go 10-9. If we are 43-45 we still have a shot. 42-46 or worse and I think we're probably not going to make a serious run at the division. I don't understand how one game is going to be the difference between us being in the hunt and completely done. The closer to .500 the better, but this division is so bad that the Sox could lose ground and still have a shot. If the Sox are back at .500 by the break, I'll be feeling good about their chances.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) Look at the Brewers rotation. You telling me they wouldn't love to get Contreras? If Contreras keeps pitching like he has, hell, even like he did last night, we'll be able to get something for him. The Brewers could really use a pitcher like Contreras and they might be willing to give up struggling prospect Jeremy Jeffress. Kudos to Jose for pitching well during his last three starts, but we've seen this before. Jose hasn't pitched well for even half half of a season since 2006. If somebody wants to ignore this and take him off our hands, that would be great. But I don't see it happening. I don't believe that any GM is going to give us anything substantial in return.

QUOTE (DaveBrown85 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 06:50 PM) really? must be a close family if he went for an appendectomy. thats pretty routine. Not when it's an emergency. A ruptured appendix can cause death.

Quentin "one bad step" from being lost for season
WCSox replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) I also think that if you think the White Sox have the talent to be anything but the worst division winner at less than 90 games, you are completely delusional That may be true, but a division winner is a division winner. And at this point, there is no AL Central team that's clearly "better" than the Sox. It's better to be the "tallest midget" in a crappy division than playing golf in October. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 02:14 PM) Dye was never injured on the Sox for an extended period of time in his first two seasons. Carlos Quentin has missed like a quarter of the games he's had on the Sox in two years. Exactly. Last year was, by far, the closest that Quentin's ever gotten to playing a full season. The comparison to the pre-Sox era JD is not a good one. -
The Randy Johnson 19-strikeout game from August, 1997 is currently on. Great weekend for Sox baseball.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 02:44 PM) I'm not saying he's not partially at fault -- but to completely ignore Getz *critical* error in a *critical* situation is ridiculous. It's typical "fan in the moment" scapegoat-ism -- to force create a word. Giving up back-to-back homers with a four-run lead in the bottom of the 8th is completely indefensible, even if Getz did give the Cubs an extra out. Veteran relievers who make $5 million a year are expected to pitch over those mistakes. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 02:53 PM) I was at one of the Rooftop parties across from Wrigley -- the moment the Cubs tied it, I left and started driving home because I knew it was over...the momentum shift was ridiculous and sudden, the worst kind. Keep in mind that the bases were clear with two outs when the Cubs tied it. That was ALL Linebrink.
-
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 02:10 PM) Line*brink, Scott - see Bill "Inherited Runners Scored" Simas Yeah, good ole "Si mas, no mas!"
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) The Sox need to move him if they can. That's the problem: He's owed about $13 million over the next 2 1/2 years. No GM is going to pay that much for a guy with a bum shoulder.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 01:59 PM) um... Seriously though, this thread will be ugly. Oops! That's what I get for multitasking.
-
He's been getting HIT hard lately. Given that he admitted his shoulder may not ever be 100% again, I'm not feeling too good about him being under contract for two more years. Uggh...
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) Living here in Colorado, I got to see Pods playing sporadically for the Rockies last year, and frankly, I thought he was DONE. I held my tongue when we acquired him, but I thought it was EXTREME desperation on the Sox' part. Happily eating crow now. It WAS extreme desperation on the Sox's part. But it's been a glowing success so far, and kudos to Pods for stepping up his play.
-
QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) Getz is quietly hitting waaaay better, and his D has still remained solid. I love his swing. He always tries to make solid contact and square that ball up. Getz is beginning to look like a keeper at 2B, especially if Ozzie continues to manage here for the next few seasons. Unless Beckham regresses at 3B, I don't see him moving.
-
QUOTE (G&T @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 02:42 PM) He does. The players just don't execute most of the time. Today was a day when guys executed, and, of course, that makes the manager look smart. A suicide squeeze?? Wow! Danksy appeared to be dealing as well. I'm happy and all but it's just not the same as last year, when both teams were legitimate contenders (and, IIRC, the Cubs had the best record in the NL). It's like back in the '90s when the two clubs were duking it out for the Tallest Midget title.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) I am/was one of them. Sosa has no previous ties to PED's before this, and to prosecute him for something others did would be irresponsible. "Prosecution" and HOF induction are two very different things. I don't consider using common sense to see through the cover-up that the MLBPA and owners conspired to be "irresponsible." The burden of proof in the courtroom and the inherent flaws in our criminal justice system (O.J., anyone?) should never trump common sense. The combination of Sammy's unnatural increase in muscle mass, Sammy's mediocre batting average, and Sammy's mediocre defense were enough for me. Now I'd say that he has about a snowball's chance in hell.
-
QUOTE (hogan873 @ Jun 15, 2009 -> 11:25 AM) I don't know if I would. With Contreras pitching so well and Richard pitching okay, I think the SP staff is decent...for now. I wanted the trade to happen when it was going down and was disappointed when it fell through. Hindsight being what it is, I feel that it's a good thing it didn't happen. Contreras won't be here next year and who knows how Richard will pitch in the long run. In the long-term, it would've probably benefited the Sox. However, I realize that the financial commitment to Peavy was enormous and risky. The fact that Peavy has been banged up significantly over the past 12 months certainly would've made me nervous.
-
QUOTE (RME JICO @ Jun 15, 2009 -> 08:03 AM) He could've hurt it during interleague play. I looked it up and he's apparently had problems with his ankle since May 22. My bad. Apparently the Sox DID dodge a bullet here.
-
Didn't Peavy suffer that injury while running the bases? It seems that would've been less likely to happen in the AL.
-
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 14, 2009 -> 11:31 AM) Hawk and Stoney call out blackjack for his stupidity Since Hawk is the official mouthpiece of the front office, Kenny and Ozzie must not be happy with Black Jack right now.
