QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) Seems there's nothing currently offered for this game, that'd be my guess. I'm surprised that I can listen to the game over the Spanish station, but not either of the English "flagship" stations. Therefore, it doesn't seem to be a licensing issue. Somebody appears to have just dropped the ball... again.

The game has officially started, yet I can't access the radiocasts of either team. My only option is Chicago's Spanish station. WTF, MLB???

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 27, 2009 -> 10:08 PM) I have to say, I had no idea Aardsma had an ERA over 16 after the ASB last year. With that said, I'd still rather have him over MacDougal or Egbert or Broadway or anyone else we've had as the last man in the bullpen. I'll take a pass on Aaaaardsma.

That's great news for us out-of-area folk. Thanks for posting.

QUOTE (almagest @ Apr 26, 2009 -> 09:32 PM) If you're not saying Rowand was a good draft pick because high-school Prior was taken right around the same spot in the draft, then what exactly are you saying? I have absolutely no idea what point you could possibly be trying to make otherwise. My point was that by picking Rownad in the first round, the Sox expected him to contribute in the bigs. He wasn't some chopped liver 6th-rounder that Schueler took a flyer on, but didn't expect much in return. QUOTE (almagest @ Apr 26, 2009 -> 09:42 PM) You can't say teams shied away from drafting Prior solely because he was raw. I don't believe that I used the word "solely," but the results of the draft disagree with your statement. If Prior had 2-3 years of successful experience in college or the minors under his belt at that point, he would've been drafted in the top 3. "Commitments" to universities are fickle. Prior could've easily backed out if he liked what the Yankees were offering him. I agree that this is most likely what happened. But it's difficult to argue that a "commitment" to USC had much to do with where Prior was drafted. If a team was convinced that this guy was going to be a stud and had few concerns about his durability, they would've drafted him earlier and ponied up the money. Everybody knew that Prior was going to be in the bigs after he left college. It's not like he had competing offers from the NFL or NBA on the table.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 26, 2009 -> 11:08 PM) It's safe to say Brian is becoming a fan favorite on this board. Or is it still that anti-Wise sentiment turning Brian into a star in some's eyes? I don't think that it has anything to do with either of them on a personal level. Sox fans have been waiting for somebody to fill the gaping hole in CF for the past three years. Anderson *might* have finally developed into that guy. Wise has a longer record of failure in the bigs and doesn't have the defensive tools to play CF anyway.

QUOTE (Disco72 @ Apr 26, 2009 -> 05:26 PM) Managers almost always say this when a player gets hurt. The conventional wisdom is that you do not lose your job because you got hurt. Of course, we all know that if the guy replacing you plays better, you really do end up losing your job. I don't see anything wrong with Ozzie saying the same thing that managers always say. The reaction on here is hilarious. This rule applies to proven major-league talent, not career journeymen who can't hit ML pitching or field their current position.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 26, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) Seriously though, if we're so worried about Brian maturing and everything...after several years of waiting, he's finally performing adequately, and when Ozzie's given a chance to speak on the subject, and all we get is "we'll reevaluate it." At least give the kid a vote of confidence or something. Yeah, I agree. Unless Anderson is still acting like an immature D-bag in the clubhouse or something, these comments are completely counter-productive. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Apr 26, 2009 -> 03:39 PM) When did Wise play "good" this year? In the last four or five days before his injury. In Ozzie's twisted mind, that completely erases Wise's 0-12 start or whatever it was, and Anderson raking at the plate in his place. I hope that BA goes on to have a good career, but I'm beginning to think that it's just not going to happen here, regardless of how he plays.

Even if he did go on the DL, I couldn't imagine Getz missing much time.
-
QUOTE (Felix @ Apr 25, 2009 -> 09:53 PM) I love me some BA, but he's not an All-Star. He's definitely our CF though, which is just amazing and long overdue. +1

QUOTE (WSoxMatt @ Apr 26, 2009 -> 05:51 AM) Should we sign Thome back after the season...would be great to see him hit #600 in a White Sox uniform Maybe to a one-year deal with a mutual option for a second. Not sure he'd take it, though. I doubt that Thome would ever treat his wife that way. Sounds like somebody has a grudge against him. A friend of a friend of my went out on a date with him shortly after he arrived in Cleveland. I'm not sure if there was even a second date, but apparently he was a pretty nice guy back then. Great article. Thanks for posting.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Apr 24, 2009 -> 09:08 AM) Not released, but replaced in the rotation. I could see a scenario where Jose is placed on the 15-day DL to "recover." If you know what I mean. Yeah, I agree. In fact, they should've went ahead and done this at the beginning of the month.
-
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Apr 24, 2009 -> 08:49 AM) Seriously now, though...last I checked, Contreras is still coming off a major injury. Now I know it sucks that he's getting his pitching feet we during the season, but who's to say he won't pick it up after gaining some confidence? Gotta throw him out there a couple more times. And Colon...as has been said before, he's had 2 good starts and 1 bad one. Not bad for a 5th starter. Stop it now. You're making WAY too much sense here. As in he would be the first one released between the two? I'm not sure about that. Jose's recent track record has been better than Colon's.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) He hasn't really been much better this year so far... http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...o01.shtml?redir Considering how mediocre he was last year and the fact that he's getting paid $6 M this season, I don't miss him either.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) Mark Prior was considered one of the best prospects in history. We're talking Hamilton/Wieters/Strasburg hype. It doesn't matter where Rowand was drafted, he was never expected to touch Prior. So, arguing that he held the same kind of value to a team during the draft is ignorant. Speaking of ignorance, the results of that year's draft completely disagree with your statement. Rowand coming out of Cal State Fullerton was deemed to have approximately equal draft value to a phenomenally-talented-but-still-raw-and-untested Mark Prior. Prior even being picked in the first round straight out of high school speaks volumes about his ability, and it was very obvious to anybody who knows anything about baseball that Prior had MUCH more upside over the long-term. But it's clear that ML organizations often value experience and ML-readiness over raw ability on draft day.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 05:25 PM) Josh Fields and Jim Thome each struck out both their ABs so far tonight. As long as we are replacing players, maybe we should find some for them. I really believe if some soxtalkers were the White Sox GM, the team would probably employ about 150 players every season, and the payroll would be about $250 million. In other words, it'd be just like Brian Cashman and the Steinbrenners running the Sox.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 10:20 AM) You do realize that Prior when on to have an incredibly impressive college career, right? Thereby, making himself a mega-prospect, a level that Rowand never even sniffed at? How does this even equate? QUOTE (almagest @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) So Rowand is better than a high school pitcher who didn't even sign with the team that drafted him that year, and was later a #2 overall pick at the same experience level as Rowand? Wow, these are some absolutely awful straw man arguments. The fact that the Sox spent a first-round pick on Rowand suggests that he was at least a solid prospect. Not a can't-miss bad-ass, but certainly somebody who they projected to contribute in the bigs.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 10:21 AM) I live near Jersey, my roomate is from Jersey, Jersey SUCKS. Unless, you're looking for oriental carpets, then you're fine. Southern Jersey is really nice. If you're away from the congestion of NYC, it's not bad at all.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 04:20 PM) I'd like to see the sleeveless home jerseys back at some point. I agree that those are nice. I also don't mind seeing the retro uniforms every once in a while... even the ugly ones from the '80s. But I'd hate to see the home unis changed. They're spiff.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 09:56 PM) guys seriously. it's early. he's coming back from a massive injury. cool your jets. +1 Dude tore his freaking Achilles just over 8 months ago. I'm surprised that he's physically able to go out there and pitch right now. Give him another month to get back his leg strength and work on his command. He was actually pitching pretty well between the ASB and his injury last season.

QUOTE (almagest @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 05:30 PM) Uhh... do you mean Mauer? Mauer/Prior went 1/2 in 2001. Rowand was drafted #35 overall in 1998. No, I mean Prior. He was drafted out of high school at #43 overall by the Yankees in '98. They couldn't agree to terms and Prior went to USC.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) Because Gordon Beckham is at all comparable to a meh prospect like Rowand? If you really want to make a comparison go back to Ventura who's probably the most comparable Sox prospect in semi-recent memory to Gordon Beckham. And if Gordon were to hit as well as Crede did during his first 200+ AB stint with the Sox I'd take it. I'm also confused as to why Beckham needs to be compared to past Sox prospects (none of which were as highly regarded as Gordon) as opposed to someone like Ryan Zimmerman. Rowand was a first-round pick (selected before Mark Prior, actually). Not as highly regarded as Beckham, but pretty far from a "meh" prospect in my book. I don't see how Beckham is comparable to a young Ventura, but not a young Crede. Joe wasn't drafted as high, but eventually became VERY highly-regarded as he tore up high-A, AA, and AAA. If you want to factor college into the equation, Ventura put in almost a full season in AA before earning a permanent spot in Chicago the following year. Given how horrible the Sox were '89, developing Ventura in the majors was an option, but they chose to let him develop him in AA instead. Again, I don't see the reasoning behind pushing Beckham into the bigs ahead of schedule when Fields is playing relatively well and Alexei has already proven that he can hit at the ML level.
-
QUOTE (Cali @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) I'm in favor of this. I'm sick of the whole, Beckham needs more time in the minors stuff. The Sox are due for a top prospect to come up and rake and help the team. It's been too long.... Gordon is that man. Right, just like how Crede (who was projected by some to be the next Mike Schmidt) came up and raked immediately. Given that Beckham has only been using a wooden bat for a couple of months, I don't see why so many want him rushed into the bigs immediately.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 08:26 AM) I'm sure its been discussed, but I'm also sure they would rather that Beckham put in some significant time in them minors before going all the way to the majors. And again, let's just TRY to give Anderson a real shot here, since he's been pretty darn good since he took over as a starter. How many different "ideas" have we seen in the past week or two for CF? Wise on his return, Owens, Lillibridge, Alexei/Beckham move, etc. If in mid-May Anderson is hitting for crap, and Wise is back from the DL, then maybe it makes sense to revisit things. Agreed on both counts. If Anderson is hitting around the Mendoza line two months from now, it might be time to make a move. If he's hitting .260 with some power, I don't see how Alexei in CF and an arguably-unprepared Beckham at SS improves the team.
