Can anyone remember the last time a manager had the worst record in baseball and got a contract extension, if ever?

I have been saying that I won't root for the Sox to lose for a higher draft pick, but the possibility of possibly getting a stud like Alvarez really intrigues me. Personally, if we weren't in contention for the #1 pick I wouldn't root for us to lose, because there is really no difference between the 2nd and 5th pick in my mind. I still want Danks, Richar, etc. to do good, but losses are better right now. -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 10, 2007 -> 01:48 PM) And Brown in now defenitly done for the season, according to NFL.com Yep, it's official. http://rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/p...840&id=2493 What really pisses me off is it was on a complete cheap shot by Lorenzo Neal.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 06:53 PM) I agree about OU, but somebody will get LSU in conference play (I've seen many better SEC teams get beat). I think Penn State has a real good shot at a trip to the title game to be honest, they have the senior QB, talent and depth all over, and a very favorable schedule, as they'll be favored big every road game and have all their tough games in Happy Valley. I would be suprised if LSU got through SEC play undefeated, it's just too tough. It's a complete joke that Auburn got left out a couple of years ago. -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 10:41 PM) I can think of two other guys to add. But LaRussa really comes to mind when it comes to sleaze. LaRussa can be classless, but in the 90's every team had guys on roids, and every manager probably had at least some idea about it.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 07:53 PM) And just like that. I wonder who the first Sox or Cub player (ex or current) will be... Canseco

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 09:47 PM) PS: LaRussa is one of the greatest facilitators of steroids in the game. The Bash Brothers, Rick Ankiel, plenty of guys on the rosters besides the names, I'm sure, and he's always right there, steady like San Francisco. Pretty interesting that not all franchises operate like that, though, or managers. Arizona is on record as saying that they got rid of people they thought were on steroids and Glaus was one of them. LaRussa hasn't had anymore steroid guys than any other manager. Look at the great Joe Torre-Giambi, Grimsley, Sheffield, Abreu?, Clemens?

I would love to get Iannetta. I for one am sick of AJ and have no idea why he gets a free pass. Garland for Iannetta+Greg Reynolds

Well, i've had a couple of hours to get over this game so I'll post all of my thoughts from today- -Didn't expect to win, but i'm pissed we gave the game away. -I like our D under Babich, he's not afraid to bring pressure (unlike Rivera) -Grossman wasn't great, but he wasn't too bad and made some good throws. The INT wasn't his fault. -I'm not gonna worry about Benson too much, the O line played like dogs*** today -I love the Chargers new unis. Most teams new unis the past few years have been downright awful, can't say that about these.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 10:26 PM) Novak needs to retire, he's a f***ing awful coach and turned a game being dominated by a still bad NIU team into a loss. We might go 2-10 or 3-9 this season in a terrible MAC West, I wish he'd retire already. Couldn't have said it any better. The recruiting has been piss poor the last few years and it's starting to catch up. Tonight's loss was inexcusable, I wish they would just hand him his pink slip. -
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 01:10 PM) Oh don't get me wrong, they SHOULD try to catch these guys, and the fact they aren't is a joke. My point is, don't hold your breath waiting for a cleaned up game, becuase even if baseball has up to the second testing policies, cheating will continue, and usually not get caught. Cheating in baseball is just as old as the game itself. Between corked bats, scuffing baseballs, speed, etc. In Jeff Pearlman's book "The Bad Guys Won" he talks about how a lot of the guys on the 1986 Mets took speed before the games and were supplied by a clubhouse attendant, and it was pretty rampant around baseball. Cheating is wrong, but as you say, who knows if baseball will ever be clean.

The farm system isn't gonna change until the Sox draft better, which hasn't been happening. They could get a quicker fix if they were actually willing to go over slot on guys, but we know that won't happen. A couple of years ago the Yankees had one of the worst systems in baseball, but the last couple of years they have went over slot and taken guys like Chamberlain, Kennedy, and Brackman.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 2, 2007 -> 12:05 AM) And it was about 2/3 Iowa fans today at Soldier Field, but they were so drunk and tired from the Cubs game the day before that they weren't very loud. How many of the NIU fans were actually students? From what they were saying on the NIU board pretty much all of the NIU fans were alumni, which doesn't suprise me one bit. -

QUOTE(Brian @ Sep 1, 2007 -> 07:26 PM) As pissed as I was to find out Michigan lost, can't be too surprised. Michigan NEVER comes out and blows out the team in Week 1. Carr can't prepare a team after a long time off or to start the season. Hope this is the nail in his coffin. They just play down to their competition too much. They almost lost to Ball St. last year, and only beat San Diego St. by 3 in 2004. Carr should be fired right now, but I'd say he's gone after the season unless he beats OSU and wins a BCS game. -
Where's our Clay Buchholz? (sorry Flash, had to say it).

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 10:55 AM) Keith Law has a top-20 preview on ESPN Insider. I won't post the whole thing, but here were his top 5: 1) OF Isaac Galloway (Los Osos HS, CA) 2) OF Aaron Hicks (Wilson HS, CA) (think he's also a pitcher) 3) Justin Smoak, 1B, University of South Carolina 4) Brian Matusz, SP, University of San Diego 5) Pedro Alvarez, 3B, Vanderbilt He seems to like the high schoolers, even though from what I've read/heard Alvarez is the current favorite for #1. Also, he mentions Jordan Danks at #20. I'm somewhat worried that we're going to take him, as we have drafted him before and seem to like him. If he has a big year there's nothing wrong with that necessarily, but thus far he's projected as more of a mid-1st pick that we might take because we're confident he'd sign. Also, he's another article (blatantly stolen from an old thread in FutureSox): Old thread with MLB.com artile Keep in mind that this is going to change DRASTICALLY between now and then, some guys are going to move up/down based on performance, and probably at least one guy that wasn't mentioned will shoot up the draft boards or come out of nowhere to be a high pick (especially for the high schoolers). Edit- My bad, link no good, changed it to the Soxtalk one (about 3 posts down). Suprised to see he has Alvarez #5. I know one of the BA guys said Alvarez would have been the first pick this year. I just have a feeling the Sox will take someone that's signable.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 01:56 AM) I'm excited about the possibility of drafting high and selecting a franchise player, but I'm afraid of whether the opportunity will be wasted because of our obendiece to slot recommendations. Or an avoidance of Boras. I hope it isn't an issue at all. It would be terrible knowing someone such as Alvarez was available, but because he's commanding two million more than we're willing to pay another less talented player is selected. I wish the Sox would cut some money on the big league payroll and spend it on the draft/international signings. Hell, the Yankees are already getting impact from their great draft last year (Chamberlain, Kennedy). But they are a team who isn't afraid to spend money in that department.

We F****** SUCK:part deux Game One in Cleveland
WhiteSoxfan1986 replied to rangercal's topic in 2007 Season in Review
Ozzie's managing tonight was brutal. Macdougal goes 3-0 on two hitters, yet Guillen leaves him out there for the third instead of bringing in Jenks. No excuse for Jenks not to be used in that situation. -
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 11:58 PM) As bad as it sounds, which of the two are better for our future -- a top three pick, or finishing up strong in a useless season and ending up around 7-10? If believing in this makes me a bad fan in someones eyes, then so be it. Judging from this thread many agree with me. I'm not gonna call someone a bad fan for rooting for a draft pick, it's just my preference to always root for my team. The baseball draft is also far, far from getting a good major league player. I also really want to see guys like Fields, Richar, Owens, Danks, Floyd, etc. do well.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 11:33 PM) Alvarez would be sweet. What if he signs with Boras and the Sox don't take him? What if we end up with the 2008 version of Matt Bush? Sorry, I just can't root for my team to lose so they can gain a draft pick.
