QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 16, 2007 -> 09:59 PM) I think Rock may well be one of those guys who puts up low numbers his first year, but then as time goes on winds up with more and more people lobbying for him and telling other sportswriters to look at his numbers, like we saw with Sutter a year ago or so & like we've seen with some other guys. There are already a lot of the stathead people out there who see this guy's numbers and say "Yeah, that's HOF worthy" and over time I think they'll add up. This year would be a good year for him(no slam dunk HOFer) but it's his first year on the ballot. It would be cool to see him go in with Henderson next year.

It's Rock's first year up for election in 2008, and I think he should get in, although he probably won't. http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/raineti01.shtml 84% SB success rate (better than Brock and Henderson) .294 avg, .385 obp 4 stolen base crowns, 1 batting title, 1 obp title 4th all-time in stolen bases .400+ obp 4 times good defensive outfielder Next to Henderson he was the best leadoff man of his era. Yes he doesn't have 3,000 hits (ala Lou Brock), but Rock's career obp is about 40 points higher than Brock's.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 11:14 PM) But soxfan, don't you agree the signs are there that Thome is on the major decline? Bad back, he's not hitting any more home runs than Bonds for goshsakes. That shift has confounded him this year for sure as well. Yes he has declined, but he is still a productive ballplayer. He would also have more homers and a better average if the rest of the team had decided to hit earlier in the season.

Could a below .500 team make the playoffs this year? That fact combined with an 83 win team in the playoffs last year and an 82 win team making it the year before kind of makes me wish MLB went back to two divisions and four playoff teams, although that will never happen. Granted, the 73 Mets made it all the way to the series with 82 wins.

QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 11:04 PM) this team isn't going anywhere with jim thome in the lineup, as sad as that is to say because he's one of my favorite players on this team, easily my 2nd or 3rd favorite his OBP is extremely high figuring he never hits, like ever, and its only because when guys ahead of him get on, and steal 2nd, they just walk thome to get to a weaker hitter behind him LOL Let me guess, we would be on our way to another title with Rowand? Thome is one of the only players in our lineup who will ever take a walk, which some people don't understand the value of.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Aug 14, 2007 -> 11:26 AM) half.com But many of them probably have newer editions out--so you may be limited in what will sell. Amazon is good as well.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 04:48 PM) mt. carmel? I went to De La Salle...I remember when we had a good baseball team... I played against De La Salle a couple of times, but I was on varsity a couple of years after Keefner and Bougusevic left.

It also hurts watching Joba Chamberlain pitch for the Yanks knowing the Sox could have had him last year. BTW Flash, who is that in your sig?

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 01:09 AM) I'm sorry, but what is the relation of these players? My guess is players who hit 30 HR last year.

I'm not saying we should fire Ozzie, but as far as an in-game manager goes the guy is below average. When he got hired I worried about the fact that he had no managing experience, and it shows sometimes.

QUOTE(pierard @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 02:59 PM) I just moved to Ithaca, NY for law school (Cornell). It's my first time away from Chicagoland, and as bad as this season has been I miss being able to sit back with a beer and watch the sox. I can't really afford the Extra Innings package, does anyone know any cheap alternatives? Go with MLB.tv. It's only about $90-100 for the whole season. At least it was this year.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 05:01 AM) Yeah, I'm starting to get a little afraid of going into journalism as a profession. The only thing I have ever worried about with journalism is the thought of graduating and not getting a job for awhile.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 08:33 AM) Well I never had to move into a dorm or anything for college down here, since it's only a 10 min drive from where I live, so really what's the point of moving on campus there unless you're forced to. It's my last semester, and dare I say, I won't be here living at home next year. So I guess I missed out on the whole "College" experience, since I only really spend 2, 3 hours max on campus a week. I went to community college for two years and transfered to NIU for my junior year. I really didn't like living in the dorms that much, part of the reason the fact that the upperclassmen dorms at NIU aren't near as fun. Most people are anti-social or just keep to themselves. On top of that everyone in the suite I was in went home on the weekends. I still had some fun, but the dorm experience just wasn't as fun as I thought it would be. I was going to get an apartment this year with a couple people from Rockford who said they were going to NIU, but they ended up going to other schools. I decided to save money and commute from Rockford. I have a brother at SIU so I will go down there a couple of times this year, and I will probably spend a few weekends at NIU.

I haven't played FF in a couple of years but was looking to get into a pay league this year. I just wanted to know what site everyone preffered. In the past I have played on yahoo and NFL.com and have liked NFL better. However, I don't think they have public leagues that are pay. Also, what kind of prizes do you win? Just wanted to get some feedback from everyone.

Hot Fuzz was awful, I have no idea why everyone raves about it. I think I laughed twice the entire time.

QUOTE(Beastly @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 12:22 AM) I'm quite nervous about college because I don't fit the stereotypical atmosphere. I'm more of a D&D and World of Warcraft guy than a partier. I Go to NIU and live at Stevenson In all seriousness you should be fine. Go out and have some fun.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 04:49 PM) It seems like they're literally together like 5 times a year, one of them is seemingly always on vacation or gone for some reason. You're right though, this is the one good thing ESPN still has going. Kornheiser is a joke, and is the sole reason I haven't watched that show in awhile. -
The Cubs DFA'd Brian Dopriak today, he was their top prospect just two years ago.
