QUOTE(Allsox @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:10 PM) I respect Erstad and his grindness but him getting hurt is as shocking as hearing Lindsay Lohan is going to rehab. Nobody should really be suprised by this, we knew there was a good chance it would come sooner or later.

For how Frank does against us, he could hit #500 this weekend.
-
My guess is that Owens will be leading off for us tomorrow. This could be a blessing in disguise because he might be a better option than Erstad.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ May 31, 2007 -> 04:36 PM) I've been following the progress of players projected to fall within the first round/sandwich round for several months, and the true strength in this draft remains high school pitching. I know our draft philosophy recently favors college pitchers, but aside from Aaron Poreda and Nick Hagadone -- perhaps a handful of others who have come out of nowhere and escaped media attention -- there won't be many high ceiling, college pitchers available. More high schoolers with projectability will be there. Andrew Brackman stock has plummeted, but he's a Boras client. Forget about that. Jake Arrieta and Nick Schmidt will both be available, but do you associate either as high ceiling college pitchers? Or Jason Simmons? Even Poreda and Hagadone have problems with throwing secondary offerings. Since Latos is off the board, I'm pimping Nevin Griffith. Although it'll obviously serve no purpose, as we've likely had our selection in mind for several weeks. Still, if high ceiling college pitchers is the criteria -- and the various mock drafts I've seen remain true -- we're going to have to take a chance with a one-pitch pitcher. I'm going with Main right now.

Arizona signed Max Scherzer. QUOTE(thomsonmi @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:59 AM) Chris Salberg, Senior at Florida Atlantic This year Salberg has 124 strikeouts in 100.1 innings pitched. Batters hit .225 against him. As a Junior (2006): Started the season in the rotation before being moved to the bullpen on Apr. 29 against Jacksonville...longest outing of the season was 7 1/3 on Feb. 25 against Connecticut....had a season-high 11 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings against North Florida on Mar. 25...second on the team with 82 strikeouts and 73 2/3 innings...ranked seventh in the A-Sun in strikeouts...drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 22nd round. He's from Rockford.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ May 31, 2007 -> 02:50 PM) Congrats DB. I wonder who Florida's going to get now. They're due for a huge fall off if they don't do this right, and they're going to have trouble filling that spot with a solid name this late in the game. Probably Anthony Grant of VCU.

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ May 31, 2007 -> 10:30 AM) shortstop - Uribe - why keep him for $ 6 mil. when it shouldn't be that hard to replace him with a young SS with upside that's cheap. Maybe one that can get on base at a good rate. Trade him now or pickup his option and then trade him - whichever is easier. The problem is who are we gonna replace him with? There sure as hell isn't anyone in our system. Robert Valido looked like he could be a solid option a couple of years ago but that has taken a downward spiral. I'm not sure which SS are FA's at the end of this year, or which ones will be available in trades. Uribe isn't the greatest SS, but he is still one of the best defensive SS in MLB.

Would you want players like this ?

As far as the ALCS play, it might have been cheap but the bottom line is it's up to the umps to call it. They ended up getting it right. I'm not a very big fan of this play. I played baseball for over ten years and I would never have done something like it, same with Uribe's deke. That being said if the Jays hated it so much they need to drill him. Hell, Arod doesn't do that in the first inning, that's for sure. -
QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ May 31, 2007 -> 12:34 AM) He did not say "i got it" for the record. He said something close to "hah" On the Jays board they said it was "mine."

QUOTE(Brian @ May 30, 2007 -> 09:32 PM) AROD with another amateur moment. Posada pops one up on the infield with 2 outs, AROD running to third yells, "I Got It." Clark, the Jays 3B, thought it was his team mate and let the ball fall and a run scored. MacDonald started jawing with ARod. May see some more photoshop goodness as ARod was standing at third, waving his finger like a woman at MacDonald. bush league. I hope they drill him.

Adam Russell, Charlie Haeger, Gavin Floyd...

QUOTE(Friend of Nordhagen @ May 30, 2007 -> 08:01 PM) Nah, my money's on Haeger getting back on track. Knuckleballers can go through some awful stretches. Wakefield has had some brutal years, but he's a valuable guy. I've never been a big fan of Haeger. He walks way too many guys for my liking. -

I wouldn't mind seeing Broadway in the pen right now, he's a two pitch pitcher and I could see him having success. -
It will be really interesting to see what the Sox do in the draft this year. I would like to see them spend a lot of money, take a lot of "signability guys" in the later rounds. The Red Sox, Yankees, and Cubs do this all the time. The Yankees have really improved their system over the last couple of years going this route. I highly doubt the Sox will though.

QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 05:10 PM) I think it's a two way straight with Ozzie and the young prospects. Ozzie is so much like Dusty when it comes to his love for veterans. I'm not saying it's right (in fact I f***in hate it), but most managers are like that. A few examples- Chad Billingsley is in the Dodgers bullpen pitching well while they let Mark Hendrickson suck it up The Twins have had Garza and Slowey in AAA while they have had Ponson and Ortiz in the rotation (although not anymore). No way in hell Ponson should have been on their opening day roster out of spring training. Billy Butler is in AAA while the Royals play guys like Shane Costa and Emil Brown.

QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) It was either MacDougal or Aardsma. That's like having to select either L. Lohan or B. Spears to be your 12 year old daughter's role model. If it were up to me Jenks would have started the 9th, but I would have used Aardsma instead of Cliff Macdougal. Jenks should have at least pitched to Hunter though. People forget that Macdougal was the one who loaded the bases (some of that falls on Konerko). Garland sure as hell deserves his share of the blame though. He definately picked a bad time to have his worst outing of the year.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:22 PM) I have no problem at all with MacDougal starting that inning. It was one of the rare teams I'll say Ozzie made the right move. What? That was Ozzie's biggest mistake of the game.

QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 30, 2007 -> 01:44 AM) A lot depends on the progression of Gio and Russell for the fifth spot. Right now, you could pencil Masset or either of those two into the rotation and nobody would bat an eye at it. At first I never liked Masset as a starter, but he needs to go to AAA and start, or at least be able to pitch more than once or twice a week. His two best outings were his start against the Cubs and his four or five inning outing against Cleveland. His biggest problem is that he can't locate his breaking stuff. -
QUOTE(Brian @ May 29, 2007 -> 06:58 PM) All this talk made me put the game in my PS2 for the first time in years. I don't remember it taking so long to load during the game. I drafted a killer team by todays standards. It is amazing how low guys like Sizemore, Swisher, and Jose Reyes are ranked. So if I wanted to download new rosters to MLB 05 from some site, how would that work? I have no idea. Buy a maxdrive from bestbuy for about $30.

First of all, Greg Walker should have been fired a long time ago. Fields needs to be playing somewhere. I know he isn't very good in left, but he's a better option than who we have out there now. -
Other than possibly making the playoffs, knocking him out in the first would be the highlight of the season for me.
