  1. Aug. 7, 1974 Down one in the bottom of the ninth, Dick Allen breaks up a Nolan Ryan no-hitter with an infield hit. That's followed by an error and a couple more singles. Sox end up winning 2-1, years before the term walk-off was ever coined. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CH...197408070.shtml
  2. Someone can double-check the exact number, but I am nearly certain that Anderson's TWTW metrics are sky high.
  3. The glutton of pitching prospects would have been Bobby Jenks, Bartolo Colon and for us older folks, Wilbur Wood. I believe this is referring to the glut of pitching prospects. FWIW...OK by me.

How about drafting Libertyville's/TCU's Evan Skoug in June?
  5. Puig. It's the double secret probation "Cuban Strategy." Sign all the Cubans and then move the team to Havana. Read it here first. Actually, though, I'm joking only about the sell. The Cuban players have a certain camaraderie/community that comes with shared experience. To offer a micro-community of several Cubans on one team could be a stroke of genius and go a long way to creating a wonderful chemistry.
  6. QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 3, 2016 -> 08:58 PM) Out of all the predictions this guy made... 1. Do you think he was actually being serious? 2. Do you think he'll show his face around here again? If you've come to the conclusion like I have that all the answers are no then you'll realize he was a troll. LMAO
  7. In this conversation, David Wells is the only guy I put on the big club. All the rest (and there are many) are but farmhands to that major league asshat.
  8. QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 12:48 PM) They'll sign Fowler, keep Avi in RF and move Melky to DH. Bet. At what point can a team sign a free agent who had rejected a qualifying offer and NOT lose the draft pick? Is there any precedent for a handshake deal that would be executed after that date or any reason to think that couldn't happen with someone like Fowler, Desmond, others who fit into this scenario?
  9. David Wells wins this "award" hands down, for me. Because not only was he terrible with the Sox with a God-awful contract, he was also a complete horse's ass and egomaniac to boot. Just terrible. Another name to add that fans liked to loathe, perhaps fairly, perhaps not...Juan Agosto. And the 1983 Jerry Dybzinski base running gaffe in the playoffs has to earn him a mention in this thread.
  10. I wonder if the Sox do end up signing Cespedes whether it might make a difference in their deciding to bring Alexei back. I happen to think there's a uniqueness with the Cuban player experience (which is likely to change in the years ahead because of the improving relations that, we hope, will not force ballpayers to defect in order to play). But for now, I think there has to be an environmental advantage to having a Cuban contingent (Abreu, Cespedes, Alexei) with whom they can talk about their common experiences. Even without Alexei, I hope the Sox do sign Cespedes, believing that he and Abreu would benefit from having each other around. Not sure if this kind of thing enters the front office thinking, but I hope it does.
  11. I, for one, believe that if a former hallowed employee's kidney or lung could afford us a new shortstop, third baseman, catcher who can hit, outfielder who can catch and throw or DH who doesn't strike out more than he makes contact, we should all just be very grateful to Nancy Faust for her generous, unselfish donation of said organ.
  12. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Nov 25, 2015 -> 11:25 AM) Gross, but at $2.5M, no biggie. Just hate that this likely takes them out of bigger acquisition at C. Never say never! November 20, 1980...Jim Essian signed as a free agent. Four years, $1 million (significant for the day) February 12, 1981...Marc "Booter" Hill as a free agent. ($200,000 in '85...can't find '81 salary) March 18, 1981...Carlton Fisk signed as a free agent. Five years, $2.9 million
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 3, 2015 -> 08:52 AM) It's very simple then. We have the same HOF manager that got us to the playoffs in 1983 and I'll be perfectly content to let the season play out and not feel another year of healthy Sale and Abreu was wasted "doing the right thing" by our manager. If JR wants to run this franchise into the ground out of misguided loyalty, it's his legacy on the line. I personally tend to believe he's a smarter businessperson than that. I actually agree with this...if things don't change in 2-3 weeks. Tough to make the call so early in the season, though you can argue a look at last year as well. I wasn't defending Ventura; I liked him as a player and never have as a manager. I'd be happy if the Sox hired Ozzie or (preferably) Gardenhire.
  14. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 3, 2015 -> 08:22 AM) Nellie Fox? Who? 98% of the people on this board weren't born when Nellie Fox played, and most of them think his number and picture should be taken off the left field fence, old man! Well played!
  15. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 2, 2015 -> 08:05 PM) So something that happened before probably half the posters here were born (including myself) is noteworthy and should make us feel better because...? What are the age stats of this site and should they matter? Maybe I missed the post that noted this is a board for 30 and under. If so, provide the link please. But your reply which apologizes for offending begins by being dismissive. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 2, 2015 -> 08:05 PM) I'm sorry if I offended you, seriously keep posting -- but I can't agree that something that happened once or twice in 100 years is reason for optimism. I'll live. I'll also give you a piece of advice...when you make a statement...then continue "but..." it completely negates the statement made at the start of that sentence. Also, don't use hyperbole to extol your position. If you dismiss a 30-year-old example specific to the White Sox on a White Sox board by saying it's something that happens one or twice in 100 years, but don't offer any proof...well, that's simply foolish. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 2, 2015 -> 08:05 PM) A better argument would be to go through every team that was dead last in run differential on May 2nd and see how many made the playoffs or won more than 87 games. I doubt it's more than a dozen, two dozen or so at absolute most. 95% of the time if you're one of the worst 3 teams in baseball after 25 games you're not going to turn it around. Perhaps last place run differential on May 2 IS an OK predictor. But if you throw it out there and don't do the research, please don't GUESS at statistical reality (dozen, two dozen AND 95%). And that last guess/statement...back to Fox Sox News...you got your money's worth...an opinion and a guess thrown out there as fact. In my initial post in this thread, I offered an example of one of the most exciting seasons in the history of the team we come to this board to read about. I put it out there as an example of how the team we love came back from a season's beginning as bad as the one we're experiencing presently. Does it mean I'm overly, blindly optimistic? No...it means I hope what we've seen so far is not what we'll see in the five or six months ahead. Back to lurking.
  16. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 2, 2015 -> 10:58 AM) Toughen up as he correctly noted it's the rare team that turns it around like that. More likely is they just stink. That said, keep posting we need new blood. Really? Don't throw something out as fact without backing it up. It's like Fox Sox News. The initial response to my post said a turnaround happens "every 50 to 100 years," then he added a couple more recent examples. Even the '83 Sox is but 32 years ago...a long way from 50 or 100. And we're not talking 2-22 here...the team is four games under. I recall offhand a recent Tampa Bay team that sucked its way through April and contended. Colorado Rockies? Anyone with the resources to compare April MLB records with final records? I did a cursory Google search but didn't come up with anything. As for toughening up...thanks for the warm invitation to keep posting; I truly appreciate the sincerity. Truth is, nearly every post I've made...mostly factual like this one...receives a personal jab or insult. Life's too short. Soxtalk is on my "regular" online visits, particularly around deadline times, because some folks here consolidate real news sources and there are a couple insiders who share information at times (Bucket and Rock). But truth is, there are simply too many "Richards" to make it worth posting more.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 2, 2015 -> 07:20 AM) Great, something that happens once every 50-100 years...and do you think Ventura will likewise make the Hall of Fame as the manager of that team eventually did. Theres the 2005 Astros (15-30) and a few other examples. Anything's possible, even now...but likely? No one said likely. If you prefer to complain ad infinitum...it's your right. But it's May 2 and the team is four games under. A little frustrating, but it doesn't make me want to chuck the season. And for what it's worth, the sarcasm and negativity toward other posters is why more people don't post more often.
  18. QUOTE (black jack @ May 2, 2015 -> 04:43 AM) There's nothing worse than having your team be dead by May. Why wait another month when there will be absolutely no hope after? They need to make a change now while the slimmest of chances still exist. The 1983 White Sox started 12-15 and won 99 games. Here's a link to a little more about that start. Take a look; it might help you sleep a little better tonight: http://www.southsidesox.com/2013/5/4/42989...ok-back-at-1983
  19. Ichiro for 1 year w/club option for year 2 to do a straight R/L platoon w/Viciedo.
  20. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 04:35 PM) They could definitely trade CarGo I believe. And I forgot who said it, but the team i guess did come out and say they do want to resign Cuddyer. Just wonder if CarGo can hit in the Clutch.
  21. Does anyone in the know or with ties to the Sox organization have any idea how the White Sox value Libertyville HS catcher Evan Skoug? From what I've been able to read online, he's probably a 2nd-4th round pick. He's a tremendous young man and a fabulous player from a wonderful family...but I say that as a former Little League coach and neighbor. I'd love to see him drafted by the White Sox and offered enough of a signing bonus to forgo his commitment to TCU. It will be a thrill to follow his development/career no matter what he ends up doing...but as a fan, I can hope.
  22. The article makes me wonder if there's less likelihood of trading Alexei Ramirez or Dayan Viciedo (at least this season) and might explain the Sox keeping Nieto as the backup catcher. To suggest such a thing about other nationalities might be absurd and could even border on racist; that's not my intent at all. It simply seems there is such a bonding experience these young men go through when leaving their country that there could well be rationale to keep a core group together for their own mental health benefits. Having Minoso in the fold as an ambassador is probably helpful, too. Even if not explicit, might it be reasonable for Abreau to think that Ramirez and Viciedo would be his teammates at least through the first year? I wonder if that was ever discussed during his contract negotiations. Interesting to ponder.

  24. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 16, 2014 -> 06:36 AM) If he has a good season, even a great season, i will enjoy it. But I will not forget about the first 3 seasons. I'll both enjoy and forget. Because even through the strikeouts and minimal OBP, there was never the indication this guy was simply cashing a check and did not care. He always took interviews and expressed his frustrations and talked of the things he was working on to get better. No...Adam Dunn is a long way from being the scourge poster child of my lifetime's White Sox. For that, it's David Wells (worthless piece of crap both on the field and off). Other nominations (with explanations, please)?
