  1. Tommy Hanson (Surprised it took quiet me to come up with this one!)
  2. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 06:42 PM) It does not come with the territory to treat people like that. You can say they played bad, I;m sure he knows that, but to constantly treat him like that is wrong. Maybe it's just the parent in me but when people behave that poorly, you do have the right to tell them they should treat others with respect. It's just being civilized. Put it on the board...YES! Adam Dunn has been a stand-up guy. He knows his own stats better than anyone on this board. You wanna go off on David Wells, the most putrid excuse for a White Sox I can think of...or Alex Rodriguez, the Voldemort of the MLB...go ahead. But there is no reason to think that Adam Dunn hasn't done his absolute (clean) best and just not been as good as any of us would have liked (him included). Soxtalk is an interesting representation of our world...which has just gotten too effing mean-spirited.
  3. This is it exactly! QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 08:29 AM) I don't think he's saying that. However, having the opportunity to knowingly say good bye to an icon and one of the best players in franchise history is still pretty cool. If you are implying that the Sox are a playoff team without Konerko, then you're crazy.
  4. It's frustrating to feel the dearth of emotional depth from White Sox fans writing about Paul Konerko burning a roster spot on the 2014 squad or blocking someone's progress or, Lord forbid, being second choice to Adam Dunn (whom I do not dislike). Konerko is a team icon, and 2014 should be used to celebrate his terrific career, feel grateful that nearly all of it was played for our favorite team and thank him for his contributions on and off the field (consummate team captain, hard worker, played through injury...without ever a hint of scandal). Enjoy this for what it is...his farewell tour. At worst it means the team has to eat some Keppinger or Dunn money to trade/release them. But the three legitimate stars-a-comin', Abreu, Davidson and Garcia, won't suffer; they will only be aided with a year of study under Paul Konerko. We can only hope any of their careers with the White Sox will begin to approach what Konerko has done for this organization.
  5. Would just like to point out... Four whole pages without anyone name calling or saying someone's post is devoid of merit. Mods, please confirm...but I believe this is a new Soxtalk record. Back to your enjoyable trade speculation.
  6. Great thread...one more thing to hate about Ozzie...it's his fault we got Adam Dunn!
  7. Growing up, my favorite player was Jorge Orta. Before him, I recall liking BB Richard. As an adult...Tony Graffanino.
  8. A question...if answered in previous posts, my apologies... Why do the Yankees keep playing Rodriguez? I understand they can't cut him without responsibility for money owed. And I believe there's a certain clause that doesn't allow teams to demote players with a certain amount of service to the minors. So I concede that if healthy, he takes a 25-man roster slot. If I'm Cashman, though, I'd take my shot by telling Girardi he will play with 24 until Sept. 1 when rosters are expanded and tell Rodriguez that while he's an "on paper" member of the New York Yankees, he is no longer welcome in the clubhouse or dugout. I'd guess the goodwill created by such leadership would far outweigh any negative that comes by playing a man down. If contractual language doesn't allow banning him from the team, I'd tell Girardi he may not play him under any circumstances.
  9. Now THIS is a good thread. Suppose Hawk adopts TPSM in favor of TWTW?
  10. Per MLB Trade Rumors: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/whit...s-ishikawa.html
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 07:34 AM) Can we all universally agree that comparing any prospect to Mike Trout is officially unfair? Can we all universally agree that putting down someone's SIXTH post is officially unfair? The single worst thing about Soxtalk is the in-thread personal sniping and arrogance. If some Rockies farmhand reminds some poster of Mike Trout, so be it.
  12. The latest page or so of posts in this thread illustrates well why the "smartest" Soxtalk members post so rarely. I'll give Soxtalk this: when something happens that impacts our favorite team, it typically appears here first. So this site's members include some well-connected people. And for that, I visit (depending on the time of year) between several times per day to several times per week. That said, there are just too many jackasses who want to use this site's threads for their own cyber barfights. I wish they would go the way of their demigod, Mike North, and disappear.
  13. It seems as though the two schools of thought are: 1. Rebuilding (current Cubs) 2. Studs to win (forever Yankees) But look at the World Series winners. When the Sox won in '05,they weren't the best team. Two St. Louis Cardinals teams? Two SF teams? Below are the match ups (and results) of the last 10 World Series. Look these over. Where do these teams fit in the above schools of thought. Seems to me that Williams/Hahn have it right...put out a team to compete from the get-go. With enough luck, add at deadline...without it/dump...but there's no need to do a full rebuild. And if you do...there's absolutely no guarantee it'll work out. World Series participants are lightning in a bottle (thank God, because I finally saw one happen here) 2012 San Francisco Giants Detroit Tigers 4-0 2011 St. Louis Cardinals Texas Rangers 4-3 2010 San Francisco Giants Texas Rangers 4-1 2009 New York Yankees Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 2008 Philadelphia Phillies Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 2007 Boston Red Sox Colorado Rockies 4-0 2006 St. Louis Cardinals Detroit Tigers 4-1 2005 Chicago White Sox Houston Astros 4-0 2004 Boston Red Sox St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 2003 Florida Marlins New York Yankees 4-2
  14. QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Mar 9, 2013 -> 03:35 PM) Thank you for a well thought post that is considerate of everyone here. I used to post a lot more and have started more threads lately. I stay away for long periods of time when I see people getting put down by sarcastic and condescending comments. I have never claimed to be a knowledgeable fan but I do try to do my homework on the team during the regular and off season. That's just my way of looking at it and it works for me. Couldn't agree more with these last two posters. While this trade possibility is probably unlikely at this point, it was referenced from a Yankees article suggesting Headley (and others) might be available and then put a "if that...why not the Sox?" question on it. Perfectly appropriate. And put me in the camp of "seldom poster because of the negative tenor of several/many frequent contributors." That said, Soxtalk always has Sox-related information ahead of any of its competitors, which keeps me coming back to check the site typically 3-4 times/day.
  15. Voted and posted on my facebook page. We need a White Sox fan to win this!
  16. I am guilty of checking here, mlbtraderumors, prosportsdaily...on a near hourly basis for the past couple of weeks. But considering the signing of Keppinger, I look at the 2013 Sox makeup and think this is a pretty decent team to enter the season with. Good rotation. Strong bullpen. Every position player in place. I know there's been some talk of a LH bat. OK...might be nice. If it's for the bench, sign Thome as a LH pinch-hitter or bring AJ back to play 1/3-time behind the plate and be on the bench the rest of the time. I think it's because Hahn said he wasn't done that I'm so antsy. But maybe he should be. Unless it's a signing of Hamilton, which, to me, is not very likely.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 12, 2012 -> 09:15 AM) If the Yankees problem is that their OF is too LH heavy...doesn't getting De Aza...not help? Yep...brain cramp...Rios/Granderson one-up? Though I think your tidbit of information blows up my idea. Ah well...that's why I so rarely post.
  18. With the report the Yankees have resigned Ichiro (MLBTraderumors), they now have 3 LH outfielders in Ichiro, Gardiner and Granderson. If we're "signing up," for a strategy...I'd like to see Granderson and some salary relief for De Aza. To me, Granderson is a complete player. He's hit for average and power and is a very good center fielder. Last season's average was down because he was a middle-of-the-order guy. Put him in CF flanked by Rios and Viciedo and bat him first. All this, and he's a stellar human being, too...and from Chicago. Several years ago, the winter after he had his September (maybe a little more) cup of coffee with the Tigers, he was a coach at a baseball camp for kids in Libertyville. He took time for each kid, smiled, signed autographs and answered everyone's questions. He came across as totally genuine. I'd love for him to have some very good years with the White Sox.
  19. QUOTE (farmteam @ May 26, 2012 -> 12:00 AM) Well, if the best your farm system can offer is a couple of relievers and a pitcher who's made one decent start and one good relief appearance, then yeah that sounds pretty barren. That said, I like Reed a lot and I could Jones being similar to Jesse Crain. Typically "Soxtalky" smarmy quote. Not that everyone is supposed to be farting rainbows and crapping moon pies, but what's the point of putting this into THIS discussion? On the topic, many people believe young player development is integral to building sustained winning. It's probably so. And organizations get evaluated on that...and on how they spend money on big name free agents. But what I do not see (next to never) is analysis of how GMs compare when it comes to plugging major league holes or adding the integral piece. Kenny Williams (and Ron Scheuler before him) is awfully good at that. We went for a number of years with some excellent rent-a-right-fielders. Albeit a week...but Orland Hudson is a great current example. De Aza's pickup off the scrap heap. Hell even the trade for Carlos Quentin. Many more examples out there for sure. So, to the Soxtalk braintrust, how important is this GM skillset vis-a-vis drafting/developing talent? And how do you rate Williams/Sox organization against others. Discuss. Back to lurking.
  20. There's a estate sale in Naperville (today through Saturday) that has a ton of White Sox (and other baseball) paraphernalia. I picked up a photo of Carlton Fisk, Robin Ventura and Frank Thomas together; a 1959 World Series program; and a program from the 1983 All-Star Game. There are '83 World Series tickets, tons of Fisk stuff, bats, signed balls and photos...DiMaggio, Feller, etc. The woman who owned this passed away...she was obviously a booster/season ticket holder. didn't see any jerseys...there were some shirts. Here's the link with information if anyone's interested: http://www.estatesales.net/estate-sales/267792.aspx
  21. Castro acquired by White Sox Kenny is arrogant...but you have to love his celebration of Castro Day with this acquisition.
  22. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 04:32 PM) Does anyone on the Sox coaching staff speak Spanish fluently? I hear Coop does, but does anyone else? This could be a concern. Not sure why. Having Ozzie as manager for so many years didn't seem to keep English-speakers from joining the roster.
  23. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 11:03 AM) News from the future: Minnie Miñoso receives nowhere near the necessary votes to achieve Hall Of Fame status. The proliferation of this type of attitude in posts across this board shut down discussion and keep White Sox fans like me from bothering to post often or read too deeply into this site. To be sure, sheer interest and numbers keep Soxtalk the place to check out for up-to-the-minute new about our favorite team. But the constant negativity, finger pointing and fault finding is a buzzkill. BTW, a**h0le, there's no tilde in Minoso's name.
  24. So the new slogan is: All In...except Quentin...but that's a good thing!
