Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap
buckweaver replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 12:33 AM) If somewhere in pretend land that Dye could net you Votto, why in the world would you involve the angels and move Votto on. If Kenny gets into that 3 way and walks away with Figgins, and the Angels wind up with Votto then Kenny needs to stop drinking before he makes these calls. Votto > Figgins You're both sipping too much nog of egg while there's still work to be done. The proposed 3-way trade didn't need your reprimand because in it, the writer was suggesting the Sox would net Figgins (maybe Santana) and Votto for Konerko and Dye. Where I believe some common sense needs to be added is that, in an attempt to get all 3-way-y as the armchair Kenny Williams, the trade proposer instead is proposing two simple trades: the first...Dye to Cincy for Votto. The second...Konerko to Anaheim/San Luis Obispo (and I don't know how to make that green or teal or whatever color it's supposed to be) for Figgins (and maybe Santana). To do that, why would Anaheim and Cincy need to swap minor leaguers? As for personal thoughts...if the second trade included Santana...let's have one great party for two of my forever favorite White Sox and wish them well in the twilight of their careers in their new cities. -
My friend...he's 3-1/2! Find the t-shirt that has his favorite/chosen player's name and number on the back. put a little eye black on him along with his Sox hat, tell him he's the cutest thing you've ever seen, take plenty of pictures...then go trick-or-treating. No need for a $150 replica jersey that he'll outgrow by opening day. And as an at-home dad for nearly 15 years now I absolutely promise you that there will be no difference in his experience between the two! Have fun. -Barry

I'm sad and angry for all the reasons so many have already posted, but this morning, I went back to my own preseason predictions, which said this was probably a .500 team, maybe a couple of games on either side, that would finish 3rd at best. So here we are, needing to win 162 for a chance at winning the division in a playoff. And we've done it without our best player (Carlos Quentin) and best first 1/2 starter (Jose Contreras) for good portions of the second half. I'll angst along with the rest of you when our season ends, unless it ends in a miraculous world championship. But when the dust settles, I have to say this season exceeded my expectations. I want to be faster, yes. I want our bullpen to be untouchable, yes. I want five dependable starters, yes. I want Konerko, Griffey, Thome and Dye to all be 27, yes. But this is baseball...for better or worse. One more cool thing...wonder if it would be a first: if the White Sox get into the playoffs and win the first game at Tampa, they will have a four-game winning streak and each of the four wins will be against a different team. Where are the board statisticians? Ever been done before?

Does this change the time of the game or is it still 1:05?

Can't quite get to 2005 over last night...though it was a great way to win a game. But my 2 cents says last night Alexei Ramirez solidified his position as starting infielder, perhaps for a very long time. Someone commented in another thread about the "sick" pitchers' ERAs on the Sox; to me what is sick is making four flawless barehanded plays on a foggy/wet surface...at least two of which probably gave Konerko the opportunity for the at-bat that won the game. A week ago, I was hoping Kenny would trade for a second baseman. Now I say only do that if it's trading Cabrera with the intent of moving Ramirez to his natural SS position.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 16, 2008 -> 04:20 AM) Phil Rogers had this little blurb; I saw this, too. ANY chance Baltimore takes a package of Uribe, Richar (or B prospect) and Brian Anderson for Roberts? BA is young. Though I remain on record as saying I don't want admitted steroid-users on our team...if Kenny is considering trying to make an offer, I wonder what type might draw the requisite interest from Baltimore.

Padres looking for Corner Outfielder
buckweaver replied to buckweaver's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 03:45 PM) Basically, you are suggesting a drop off of production from Dye to Owens; that could be as much as a 300 point difference in OPS, and is almost assured of being about 150-200 points difference. Well...that's worst case. I only bring it up as a possible way to begin to go young while still putting a good team on the field. No question a good, healthy JD is a better option than what we'd put out there without him. Perhaps a deal such as the one I suggest is one for consideration in a few months if the Sox are wallowing in 3rd or 4th place and the Padres are still in need of a corner OFer. As I said in the first post...consider the time, temp., and dearth of insight of late. -
Dan Diego UNION-TRIBUNE February 14, 2008 "GM Kevin Towers said he will continue to explore trade options for a corner outfielder. The Padres have asked about three right-handed hitters: Pittsburgh's Xavier Nady and Jason Bay and the Chicago Cubs' Matt Murton. Triple-A catcher Nick Hundley could be a trade chip." Now I love JD as much as anyone, but...depending on what young players would be available from San Diego (I am not nearly as informed about teams' minor league systems as some of the posters on this forum)...wouldn't Dye to San Diego make a whole lot of sense? It allows Quentin to move to RF and leaves Swisher in LF and Owens in CF. I understand why it won't happen--because we are looking to win now and a resurgent JD helps make that happen (my God, I hope it works). But would we be a whole lot worse if we make this type trade, considering what proven MLB talent is bringing back these days? We could re-load the minors well, I would believe. (Note: If there had been anything new to read in the past four days, I probably wouldn't have posted this. I don't think it's likely at all...but God, I hate this winter and need to talk baseball! Also, if something here is supposed to be in some color, please forgive me...I'm fairly new at posting.)

Maybe if there were a few more Josh Fieldes in MLB the sport wouldn't have as much news happening on Capitol Hill as on the hot stove. Maybe we should be glad to have someone on the team we care about who is willing to stand up to the unsavory element sand not merely willing to allow dismiss them as "rich boys being rich boys." And I'm not talking about religion...I'm talking about what's right and what's wrong. One more thought...he only made these remarks in regard to himself and how the pro athlete lifestyle affected him...he was not judging. Trade him? Hell, I say find a bunch more like him.
-
I agree with ScottyDo. It's unfair to expect a proven all-star at every position. Two years ago, Detroit made it to the World Series because Curtis Granderson emerged as the kind of player everyone is touting (and Arizona to the NLCS last year because Chris Young emerged). Going into the '06 season, Granderson was battling for playing time with Nook Logan, got the nod when both had outstanding spring trainings, and blossomed into a near-superstar. Anyone pick the Tigers to win the AL in '06? To me, the only guy out there to possibly provide a known quantity that's near what we'd like is Kenny Lofton. But signing him takes playing time from Owens and Quentin. We have three guys (Owens, Richar and Ramirez) with legitimate shots to become the '08 Sox version of the '06 Curtis Granderson. We have another possibility in Brian Anderson, if his own surfer aloofness hasn't already exiled him from the organization. The White Sox are going to be a good team. Good enough? We'll see. It sure wouldn't hurt if A-Wad popped his achilles in Spring Training and the Yankees has to give us Hughes or Chamberlain for Crede. But I'm looking forward to seeing which young guy makes a name for himself. If one does, and the rest of the team plays up to par, we'll look to fill that other hole in mid-late June.
-
Since this seems to be the "possible retreads" thread, and with rumors of Crede, etc. heading to SF. Think there's any possibility of bringing back Ray Durham? I've lost track of his abilities (perhaps he has, too) but it would give us someone who has played a decent 2b and CF. If we have the cash (I think he signed a fairly lucrative contract) would we spin Crede and BA for "fill in pitcher's name here" and Ray-Ray?

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jan 23, 2008 -> 07:59 AM) Doesn't matter how the offseason went.... haven't you all read the columnists in this town?? The Sox are doomed and the Scrubs are destinted ....Man these writers make me want to vomit. These are the same geniuses who said the Bears were the team to beat in the NFC and the Bulls were the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. I guess, come to think of it, they were right...they were "teams to beat" and their opponents did and are doing just that. I'm with the sunny optimists; no one predicted the Sox to win the World Series in '05. Baseball is a funny game; you make your moves, roll the dice, then watch what happens. For all the Crede speculators out there...what happens to his trade value (one year then free agent) if/when A-Rod or Mike Lowell or (fill in your favorite stud 3b-man's name on a team that's supposed to contend here) breaks his leg in spring training? And whilst you're considering that...anyone have Jeff Gillhooly's phone number? -Buck

Why not just: Voyeurs? That "g" just gets in the way...and if you're a real voyeur, you don't need a "g" gettin' in the way.

Sox Interested in Roberts?

QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Jan 10, 2008 -> 02:04 PM) Amen to that! I would love to see a sort of Truth and Reconciliation Hearing where all players, owners, etc. are asked to come clean about anything they have done or seen. Find out the reasons it was allowed to continue for so long, listen to suggestions on how to tighten things up and grant complete amnesty to all parties who come forward and speak frankly (at least about their own wrongdoing). Going forward, institute strict testing and clear rules where a positive test results in swift dismissal from the major and minor leagues. Also find ways to penalize teams for allowing drug cultures to exist a la the Oakland A's, among many others. Full agreement from me! Now...how can we get this done? Great couple of posts. Thank you. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 10, 2008 -> 12:24 PM) It's possible the only way to make that happen is for Congress to do it, because the MLB and the Union will keep saying "Our program is working" every time they get caught with something that gets passed it. I agree. And even though Congress screws a lot of things up, I say let them have at it. To those who say they don't care...I really do. If the number is 85% or so, it shows that to make it to the majors, you must be willing to do drugs that harm your body and are against the rules of the game. It's really the microcosmic equivalent of societal anarchy--to succeed, you are forced to break the rules. And this is our National Pastime? What are we teaching the next generation? Why is it good or honorable to win the World Series if the only way to do so is to pay mulitmillions of dollars to the biggest cheaters? Yes, it's baseball...but more importantly, it is telltale about the fabric of our society. Sanity needs to win out. And if the MLBPA is the group holding out on some sane resolution, it's time to break up this farce of a union which has helped (along with management) to create this mess. -

QUOTE(lostfan @ Jan 9, 2008 -> 09:45 PM) Yeah... I wish it was that black and white. I honestly do not care anymore. It is what it is. I really don't know the answer...in fact, I was thinking this morning that if my 13-year-old son didn't love baseball so much I might just try to give it up and look for other things. So maybe it's yes...regular blood tests for those who want to play or take a hike...and let Don Fehr take Scott Boras with him. Of course, I know that team management has looked the other way while the turnstiles were rolling, but what would happen if we we were to institute a real testing policy? If we can't rid the game of drugs that will do bodily harm (taken for temporary strength and financial gain) then why would we want to be fans or encourage our kids to desire to play or even be fans? All this said, I certainly don't have the understanding of how to make it happen. I'm just disgusted by it all. Which brings me to...if we KNOW a guy is/has juiced, why would we want him on our team? Why would we want to embrace a guy who's a known cheater and worse, is willing to harm himself? -

To say he didn't roll the dice isn't fair. He came up short a few times, for sure, but to exceed the salaries Hunter and Rowand got or to give more than what the Tigers gave to Florida would have killed the organization and crippled it for many years. KW is keeping in line with his philosophy of win now and win later...and that's extremely hard to pull off. If this team is second division on paper, it's only because we play in the AL Central. And even with that, I think the White Sox are the third best team on paper. But games aren't played on paper. Think back to the summer before the glory. Dye was coming off injuries/never had lived to star status. Konerko was fresh off a half season of batters box blindness. Iguchi was a shot in the dark. Pierzynski was a pig in a poke. Who knew Uribe was going to have such a great year? What did this board say about the Lee for Pods/Viz. deal? And who really thought Pods' career year would be 2005? Who predicted the prowess of 2005's Cliff Politte? What I'm saying is that there's too much negativity around here. Of course I wish every hole was filled by the top guy possible. But that's not realistic. Hell, it probably isn't even fun. If that's what people want, become a Yankee fan and get disillusioned when they don't win the World Series every year. I'll take my 2005 and hope things fall into place to bring that surprise back. For what it's worth, I think there are probably a couple of moves left.

You are all a bunch of ingrates. The guy puts together the only Chicago baseball world championship in our lifetimes, goes after marquee names and is consistently putting a competitive product on the field. He's done so every year in his tenure. You don't think he's anguishing over the fact that his top moves got thwarted? And why did that happen...because every other general manager of a major league team is working his ass off to better his team, too. You want the days of Ron Scheuler, who was too afraid to make a move without someone wiping his ass? You want Larry Himes back? You want the times when, maybe, we rented a decent player or two for a season but couldn't afford to keep them? You wonder why the Chicago White Sox are considered a small market team playing in one of the three largest cities in the country...it's because of THAT crappy history of GMs. Kenny Williams is responsible for moving this organization into the league to compete with the big boys. I'd rather be a fan of a team that swings and misses than one who never steps to the plate. So why don't all you constant complainers move across the city...you'll fit right in.

Kenny not worried about Danks & Floyd as #4 & 5
buckweaver replied to sox-r-us's topic in Pale Hose Talk
As Deep Throat said to Woodward, "No, no, no...you're not seeing the big picture." Kenny's making this statement means one of them (if not both) is going to be dealt. He's just putting out the pub to make the trading team feel like their getting a top-of-the-rotation guy. -
Sox looking at Fukudome, Bay, not Rowand

Half-man, half-pimp? So now let's start trashing Willie Harris because the Tigers got Miggy and everyone here is a pissed off Chicken Little! Some posters on this site are unbelievable. BTW, I met Willie at a Soxfest a few years back...a gracious, soft-spoken young man from Georgia. Best to him! -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:33 AM) There is plenty to be upset about. But, I agree with your overall point. Some of this THE TEAM IS SCREWED FOR 10 YEARS!!!!!!!!!! crap is pretty laughable. I just hope you don't get run down by the runaway panic-and-doom train because of your post. Bring it on. It'll only serve to prove my point.
