  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 04:59 PM) Danny Knobler ‏@DannyKnoblerCBS 3m Johan Santana has a 'probable' re-tear of left shoulder capsule - http://CBSSports.com http://cbsprt.co/10lJZ5Q Alderson: "To my knowledge, the contract is not insured." Mets owe Santana $25.5 mill this year, plus $5.5 mill buyout for 2014. Probably has been confirmed. What a disaster. The Mets sure must have wanted that first NYM No Hitter (should have held on to Humber). The only thing I could think of that would make his time with the Mets more regrettable for them is if he was relaying their signs to the visitor's dugout and was also diddling the owners wife. It's really too bad. When I read about this earlier, I had a hard time reconciling the image of Santana as a Twin 2003-2007, to Santana as a Met 2008-Present. Maybe he comes back in 2014 and Coop'll fix him.
  2. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 12:22 AM) I bet whatever he said at the end of that exchange was funny. Wish I could have heard. Carlos Boozer, for all the whining there is about him/his contract- has been a joy to have on this team, and is under-appreciated by armchair GMs everywhere.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 07:08 AM) No, I am not calling you a meatball at all. Im just over dramatacizing your statement in fun Ah
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 06:29 AM) I JUST CANT TAKE THIS ANYMORE!! Sorry, I've got to catch up with this thread (I should have, it just seems like there's always 10+ new pages since I last perused through it). I'm assuming that mine was a meatball-ish statement (it is, not going to argue with that) that's probably already been posted and dismissed.
  5. If there is no truth to this supposition, I'm shutting him down until next season regardless of whether or not he still wants to return this season (if I'm part of the decision-making group in the front office).
  6. That's true- what they didn't do is spend it all on one Carl Crawford- to be locked in until the end of time. Their signings were curious, but nowhere near as impossible to work around as another signing of that caliber.
  7. To a certain point, parity is nice. If I were a Red Sox or Yankees fan, I wouldn't want my team to throw untold millions at Josh Hamilton (or Albert Pujols, or Zack Greinke, et. al.) to repair a "93-loss grease fire of a season". Boston is lucky that a Get Out of Jail Free Card like the Dodgers exists. I'd be stunned to see them test those waters again so soon. It's funny, though, that many seem to be dismissing those teams (at least partially- I'm not overlooking the age issues) because they didn't throw Ft. Knox at someone (for once). I don't think teams in that corner of the country are going to suddenly drop everything and take the Tampa (or KC!) approach, but to an extent- they may. I'll be sitting with my popcorn cheering for anyone or anything that's playing the Angels for the next few years.
  8. Chicago from the Space Station as tweeted by astronaut Chris Hadfield. Numerous other cities and parts of the world posted via Twitter as well if you follow him.
  9. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Mar 23, 2013 -> 08:15 AM) Ever since gun control has been in risk of major sanctions I see a lot of meathead posts on my Facebook that something like his comment definitely isn't surprising or out of the norm. I sometimes wish I was born on another planet when I run into people of that ilk. Happily, that isn't too often- but they exist, and that's just a damn shame.
  10. I don't doubt that he is, and I've grown to appreciate the contribution his show makes to the program schedule. It wasn't too long ago that I was pretty dismissive in that regard. The one thing I could do without is his creeper act whenever he's got a woman (usually from somewhere in the Chicago media crowd) guesting on his show. Those segments can get pretty uncomfortable to listen to.
  11. My bracket is upset-heavy: Cincinnati (10) over Duke (2) Pitt (8) over Gonzaga (1) New Mexico State (13) over St. Louis (4) Belmont (11) over Arizona (6) Colorado (10) over Miami (2) VCU (5) over Kansas (1) I realize how absurd that looks. I'm going to continue ruminating over Colorado/Miami, and possibly Cincinnati/Duke until the very last second I can change it. After my bracket is done getting butchered, I'm going to try to sell it to a meat packing company.
  12. Louisville, Kansas State, Florida, and Marquette. Louisville wins it.
  13. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Mar 20, 2013 -> 10:47 AM) The things about Holmes with Bernstein that I love: 1) Holmes is not afraid to disagree with Bernstein whereas Boers just parrots whatever Bernstein says. 2) Bernstein is less of a douschebag when Holmes is on. It's true that Boers probably doesn't think it's worth the effort at this point in his career to disagree with Bernstein (path of least resistance etc.), but Holmes is the most flagrant offender of parroting Bernstein on that station. If he does have a difference of opinion with Berns, he defends his position timidly- almost to the point of being apologetic about it. It is also true, however, that Bernstein is more tolerant of the show's callers when Loho sits in for Boers.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2013 -> 12:06 PM) Heck I wouldn't even be surprised if Rickets set this up to try to gain some leverage against Rahm and the City of Chicago. This was the very first thought I had on the matter as well.
  15. Good to hear- although this shouldn't have ever been in question.
  16. Wow. I can't believe they're letting this go on without adding anyone or anything else- even something inanimate like a houseplant- in an attempt to dampen/soften the baddity that will be attacking ears all over Chicagoland in the 10-2 slot. What an awful, awful decision that was to let Mac go. Glad they did, though, because Spiegel is good at what he does and wouldn't have been afforded the opportunity on The Score had they not. But seriously, awful. Fireable offense.
  17. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Mar 19, 2013 -> 02:12 PM) Listening through the Reds announcers - their color guy sounds exactly like Melton, except he can pronounce names. So on top of being bad, it's joyless too?
  18. QUOTE (farmteam @ Feb 19, 2013 -> 01:02 PM) Some solid names on the Bonnaroo lineup. http://lineup.bonnaroo.com/ Got to love Paul McCartney and Wu-Tang on the same bill. Bonnaroo is not the gig I would have pictured McCarntey doing at this point in his life. I'm kicking around the idea of going down. Jim James is doing the all-night jam performance thing, so I'd be skipping the entire Mumford set to claim a spot, but music that frat boys think is deep and unique because a banjo is incorporated into their song (yes song, as in they only have one song, its just listed a few dozen times throughout their catalog under a different name), so not a big loss. I'd still like to have seen them just to be able to say I did. QUOTE (Cali @ Mar 18, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) Diggin' the Jim James solo album, but he's a Southern Yankee... I'm going to see him 4/19 in Milwaukee and 4/20 at the Vic. I like the solo album, but I haven't been able to get into it as much as I hoped I would. I think the Morning Jacket guitarist is opening act, and they do a few MMJ for encore after JJ's set. Southern Yankee is a pretty spot-o
  19. guffaw Although, if you're Ricketts and the Cubs, you've got to be loving every act of courtship that comes your way purely for whatever leverage it gives you with the city of Chicago and those who impose restrictions on you in Wrigleyville. One does not simply buy the Cubs to move them from Wrigleyville. Besides, say you do move to Favorite non-Wrigleyville Location X, what happens after you do win this fabled World Series? Baseball doesn't stop happening the instant that final out is recorded. I think most of us are familiar with the level of goodwill that buys with a fandom. All they need is to be competitive, which they're working their way towards.
  20. I had this game on as background noise (but I had it on!). Can't help but be happy- any bit of confidence booster the Sox guys in the WBC can get is a good thing. He seemed pretty damn excited to hit that hanging curve, can't take that away from him.
  21. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 14, 2013 -> 12:44 PM) Steve's been working hard on a new layout for Flapship.com so if anyone wants to take a look Id love to hear feedback. Zoom just finished a pretty awesome fantasy baseball article. http://flapship.com/ I like this design.
  22. The other A's split squad having a field days with pop-flys bouncing off of what appears to be someones face and the next ball in play falling cleanly between two fielders.
