  1. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 5, 2012 -> 10:52 PM) It makes me mad that I'm only now discovering how good Anthrax is thanks to Sirius XM. I never heard a single song of theirs until last year and that pisses me off. One of the "big four", of which Slayer was/is the best and Metallica was/is the most succesful. Not too many bands around that find the grass greener (or even as green) on the other side of the fence following a change in lead singers- six times in their case. To be fair, they're pretty much divided into the Joey era and the John era. If you enjoy them though, check out S.O.D. - a side project Scott Ian's and Charlie Benante's. I stopped following that genre of music years ago (apart from Slayer, inexplicably), but they reunited with Joey Belladona- lead singer during their so called "classic era", and the album they released seems to be going over well with their fans.
  2. This wouldn't affect whether or not I want the team in the postseason or not, the 40-50% using estimate that re-surfaced in the last few pages is spot on if I had to take an (uneducated) guess. It's just the fact that it's happening to one of your guys, not one of your guys like Ozuna (or a stellar but otherwise faceless bullpen that was pretty much a myth a week into the next season)- a vital part of the team since he came here. I'd imagine anyone would prefer to be blissfully oblivious to something of this nature. It's a pretty ugly end to what could have been a great run. For me, I'd rather watch him hit .096 and be demoted to backup than to go out like this. Still, realistically there was going to be one last chance at a payday in his career. I suppose one could look at it that way and think about how they would act if presented with that reality...
  3. Is that Lou Pinniella's voice I'm hearing on this Yankees/Rays broadcast? *Edit* It is. Trumpeting the glory of Sam Fuld from his time in Chicago at the moment. Rich.
  4. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Sep 5, 2012 -> 01:42 PM) Based on what we've seen in MLB's recent history, there absolutely cannot be any shock over this. His best power numbers at age 35, plus a free agent year. I'm not talking about rumors, just saying --he's using-- regardless of this 'report' Not disagreeing. When it comes to PEDs in baseball, I can't help but be of the where there's smoke there's fire mindset- I don't see how anyone watching this game for the last 10-15 years can look at it any other way. That's why it would be a bummer- my comment stems from my fandom. Pierzynski is a favorite of mine right up there with some of the other more typical Sox favorites.
  5. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 10:52 AM) Bon Scott John Boeham Axl Rose Freddy Mercury Michael Hutchins Lane Staley Janis Joplin I see what you did there. The biggest disservice Axl did to himself was releasing Chinese Democracy under the GNR name, because the material is great. He underestimated the Slash and Duff not being there effect- so if you can look past that, I strongly recommend it. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 12:55 PM) Axl is very much alive. Washed up, but alive. It's not so much a case of being washed up, either. Around the time of the Illusions it was obvious that the image and reputation was getting to him. Stopping shows mid-song because of minor technical glitches that he felt would take away from his performance, going after audience members that were filming the show, bringing horns/backup singers/really, turning the Illusions tour into a grandiose production that most of the band didn't really want to do. Most of the band spent their time blown out of their mind via drugs and alcohol, not Axl though, and that wasn't helping things either. It continued on for the recording of The Spaghetti Incident with bringing session players on to redo parts or outright not including the band in the production, bringing Zakk Wylde in to see how it would work between he and Slash, attempting to replace Slash with Dave Navarro afterwards... Long periods of indecision and lack of direction (or a direction the rest of the band felt comfortable going in) finally saw Duff and Slash out. Lastly, the image: I think a big part of what happened after the Illusions tour and the present is that Axl kind of started losing his hair while Slash retained what looked like a mop under the top hat. For some people it would be trivial, but for others who are as obsessed with image (and in the spotlight front and center at the time) that was probably a terrifying thing. Slash was just as much of the face of GNR as Axl was, and now Axl is losing his lettuce. Axl has played at one point or another been on stage with everyone from the original band (including Duff) except Slash. So it's really not being washed up- The new GNR has done three tours in support of Chinese Democracy (all of them curiously timed- two of them years before it's release, and one three years after the release), Axl didn't lose his voice at all- you can clearly hear that after shaking off the rust with that Mtv appearance, it's remained intact. It's all just a case of serious paranoia, perfectionism, expectations, and being self-centered. To anyone paying attention to the lyrics of the songs (especially Illusions, but Chinese Democracy as well) that shouldn't come as a surprise at all. Now, Axl is making music that has no chance of being anything other than regarded as a joke and dismissed, and Slash makes his living recording fluff material that sells purely on the strength of the name and image he crafted while in GNR. QUOTE (MEANS @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 08:33 PM) another to bring back would be Andrew Wood If Andrew Wood is alive today, Pearl Jam never happened.
  6. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 07:20 PM) I am wondering if it isn't to show he is the boss bus.
  7. I think it would be between Layne Staley and John Lennon, but probably the former because it's clear that he had so much more to offer. If we're including those who have lived full lives, Waylon Jennings would also get consideration. Wu-Tang isn't Wu-Tang without ODB, so that's something to think about as well.
  8. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 07:31 PM) CUT/WEAR Brooks, jump on this.
  9. Wow, I knew Baltimore was doing better than usual, but 1 GB the Yankees? Impressive.
  10. QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 05:54 PM) Youk, Dunn, and Konerko all do. There might be other ones on the team but that's all I've seen so far. Tonight was the first time I saw it too. Movember? I remember AJ was involved in that in the past. If it's a superstitious thing, then they probably should have gotten rid of them the moment they got done being swept by Detroit.
  11. Urlacher tells Lou Canellis that he's going to play in the opener. I fully expect Urlacher to not play in the opener. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 31, 2012 -> 08:00 AM) Fan falls to death due to "horseplay" on an elevator at Houston's Reliant stadium. Idiot. RIP
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 10:18 AM) It does not appear as if they believe they can beat Detroit. Everything- right down to the booth calling the game on ESPN- gave off the vibe that it was a foregone conclusion that Detroit was going to win that game.
  13. Has Delmon Young's face always looked like it's about to pop?
  14. ^ Not at all, but while that has been going on, Wise played over his head. I don't think that was going to last much longer- kind of like how it was with Lillibridge.
  15. You can't be unhappy with how Wise filled in for him, but that wasn't going to last much longer, so I'm thrilled De Aza is back.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 05:39 PM) You mean like Jake Peavy Continuing to want to pitch even after parts of your body are visibly falling off (like in Monty Python)?
  17. How does one become a fierce competitor in baseball? Having an angry look on your face and swinging the bat extra hard?
  18. Not going to lie- Red Sox losing 20-2 at Oakland momentarily lessened the hurt of dropping the series opener at Detroit. I bask in any misfortune that comes across the Red Sox orginization.
  19. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 29, 2012 -> 12:08 PM) This reminds me that if I somehow ever become filthy rich, every inch of my property will have 24/7 recorded video surveillance Hounds that I could release at my discretion.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 31, 2012 -> 01:53 PM) Does todays sports section show Gavin Floyd starting? That should be a caption with Peavy as Tiger slayer QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Aug 31, 2012 -> 01:07 PM) Now, more than ever, the team could use one of those vintage Floyd v. Detroit outings- so of course he's on the Invalids List... I'll be overjoyed if they just win today so the sweep is off the table. I was just reminiscing about the days that Floyd played the Tigers like a fiddle. Hopefully Peavy keeps them in check in one of his bigger starts on the Sox and I can find a different black and white picture of stereotypical safari guy posing over a Tiger he bounced.
