2012 AL Central Catch-All thread

Did the A's just get a walk-off HBP? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 09:34 AM) Frank Thomas @TheBigHurt_35 After spending years of my life with Ozzie Guillen I can honestly say he has never been this apologetic. I know he is really hurting inside for what he said. If you really know him this was not his intentions at all. Sounds about right. It's not news to anyone that Ozzie talks out of his ass and doesn't think about what he's saying until it's been said. This entire story is so much bigger than it should be, and part of the reason for that is some of those that are shouting the loudest and pointing their finger the hardest are doing it because attaching their name to this is beneficial to them in some way. The first thing anyone should do before reacting to something that may be offensive to them is to consider the source. The world would be a different place and worse off than it is today if Ozzie Guillen the baseball manager is taken seriously when he's talking about anything other than baseball.

Five games is fine by me as long as long as it gets everyone to apply their vagisil and find something else new and outrageous to b**** about, like that Ozzie is racist because the press conference was in Spanish and this is America not Spain and Mexico.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 05:37 PM) I really believe the Marlins may whack him if his apology doesn't go well... Having had the chance to read about and listen to more opinion and reactionary pieces, I'm really starting to get that vibe as well. It's funny, sometimes a story will break that you initially don't think twice about (or even dismiss entirely), but it gradually picks up steam until it gets cartoonishly large and takes on a life of it's own. Pissing off a chunk of people you were counting on to help justify off-season spending and simultaneously taking the spotlight off of the shiny new stadium that was supposed to save baseball in Florida are probably 1 and 1a on a list of things you didn't want to see happen in the 2012 season. The growing list of people making a scene out of this would also be troublesome for me if I'm Lorie- despite the suspicion that many of them probably don't really give a damn, but recognize this as a prime opportunity to attach their names and reap the good publicity. I still think it would be bogus if the consequences went beyond reading an apology and maybe enrolling in a Cuban History class at the local Jr. College. Also curious about how this would have played out if he stuck around with the Sox. He would have been on thin ice here to begin with.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 12:02 PM) LOL. There are still places where you pay for a differing opinion with your life. That was my point. Why bother with the hassle of sailing a refrigerator door across 90 miles of open water to escape an oppressive regime if the first reaction you have to something Ozzie said out of his ass is to call for his head?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 05:19 AM) Wow, it only took 3 games and some are already calling for the clown's head. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/break...0,6384867.story In the past, when interest groups over-react and make irrational demands over silly s*** like this I've found myself questioning that group's credibility and entirely disregarding their irrelevant opinions. My favorite part of this story is that he's getting hell for an opinion of his that isn't popular with a group of people. Can anyone think of another place that punishes people for the expression of their beliefs if they stray too far from, or run contrary to an accepted norm?

Nick Offerman and Craig Robinson debate Sox vs Cubs

Whatever the Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski commercials were for (also New Era IIRC)- those were the best. -
A replica Miami Marlins Ozzie jersey is only about $50 less than an autographed jersey with a World Series patch. I'm not a big fan of wearing baseball jerseys with a name on the back. Frank Thomas and Mark Buehrle are my exceptions, so I'm kind of hoping that with the whole not signing with the Sox situation I can scoop one up on clearance. I might have even considered his Marlins jersey if it didn't look like a rainbow vomited on it. *Edit* I keep hearing the Ozzie soundbite from after the first game- you could tell from his voice that he was hurt and legitimately believes he was somehow wronged. In my opinion, it didn't sound like he was sabotaging the season just to be cut loose for the Marlins. With his personality he probably would have outright said it or at least made it obvious enough for everyone to put two and two together.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) Shelly Duvall beat her to it. Yeah, but the hip thing to do when it comes to reboots is casting a younger/lesser known actor or actress to play parts that are associated with whoever came before them.

Who is the "face of the White Sox"?
Swingandalongonetoleft replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 07:29 PM) Tell that to Jeffrey Loria, they picked Guillen specifically for this reason, the Hispanic market in South Florida, his time coaching with McKeon and Ozzie's already won the "Face of the Franchise" poll in the Miami Herald over any of the players (Hanley, Reyes, Stanton, Josh Johnson). It's telling that Ventura has received zero votes so far, yet Ozzie beats out four superstars in Miami, the ultimate celeb/superstar-driven city after LA and maybe New York. Haha I was being sarcastic. I was hoping my redundant and misplaced applications of Appreciate the Game and my exaggerated portrait of a stereotypical Sox fan (or of most Chicago Sports fans in general) would give it away. -
QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 08:48 AM) Girl on the left has a job whenever someone decides to do a live-action Popeye flick.

Not too impressed with this park. I hope the other Florida team gets to move into that proposed sail concept stadium that has been floating around for a few years now.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 07:03 PM) Same manager. Different team. Same anemic offense. On some clear and especially windy days Greg Walker's influence can be felt anywhere in neighboring states that there is baseball being played.

Who is the "face of the White Sox"?
Swingandalongonetoleft replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Baseball doesn't have a face. The face of this team will be an inanimate metal sculpture with 25-30 sets of fingerprints on it in October. Only the people who know and appreciate the game and love it would recognize that. And the fans also. All of the blue collar steel workers who take their family of 4 to the game on half price Mondays after a sweaty, grueling, and particularly laborious day at work for minimal pay can appreciate the game. You know, the no bull Chicago tough people who consider -12 degree weather accompanied by snow falling sideways to be shirtless driving weather because their chest hair will insulate them can appreciate the game and be it's face. If you put ketchup on your hot dog kindly give it to them so they can throw it to the ground for the dogs and raccoons. But really, Kenny is 1a Paulie is 1b. -
Cast aside those wicked and ungrateful, for theirs my kingdom is not. Their families have been spared the dishonour of begging for scraps off my table and as a result have grown fat and complacent in their capricious lives. They bask in the warmth of my kindness, the warmth of ten thousand suns. Forthwith, refresh their old posts with those eager to harvest thine crops for their hands will be the tools used to rebuild thine kingdom. Some of those teams (especially on the 25-30 list) are teams that have been pointed to as either rebuilding, or have shed so much salary that they may as well be. A highly ranked farm system must be tended to properly, but even then, it will only be one of the ingredients needed for big league success. It has has been demonstrated over the years that while it certainly makes things easier, it isn't a requirement for winning- In fact, some of the teams with the best farm systems have notably been in the picture but were unable to finish the job. Or haven't been in the picture at all.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 30, 2012 -> 07:18 AM) Carl Pavano is reportedly facing an extortion plot. NYY have got to be involved. -
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 29, 2012 -> 04:26 PM) If he can't make an Ozzie Guillen managed team than he is 100% done. Yeah, there is a sort of finality with the way this turned out. Looking at it that way, maybe there won't be any p****footing about this.

Grinder rule #283c. Fine. I don't need a team anyway. I'll win the World Series myself and give the trophy to 2nd place as a consolation prize. Hope he catches on somewhere, although I don't see it happening before the season starts. Maybe he goes the Clemens route, just with a little less greeting the shrieking masses from a perch in the owner's suite during a 7th Inning Stretch. Someone will pick him up because the last outfielder on their bench gets hurt and no one will notice. Two rings ain't too shabby- Thome's making himself play 1B just for the chance to get one.

I've often wondered about what would happen to an annual payout if things really got bad with funding, shortages and debts etc. It's not too hard for me to imagine unfavorable "after the fact" modifications on your winnings, maybe even outright cessation depending on the situation. It's not like there would be a line of people calling foul and taking your side- after all, you're just a lucky douche who won the lotto.
