  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 02:09 PM) I'm of the opposite opinion, for one simple reason; with any sort of non-Yankee salary constraints, you do at some level have to gamble on the guys you have doing their jobs. You can't just keep quality players sitting on the bench, esp. if they're chewing up a decent chunk of salary, because the people they bring back, if you're smart about it, could and should help you more, and that salary clearing would help even more. We shouldn't just dump Juan for someone with no chance to ever get to the big leagues, but backup infielders aren't exactly that hard to find. We already have a couple in Pablo and Bourgeois, and if OC were to go down, the difference between Pablo and Uribe is not going to be the difference between missing the playoffs and making them. Things started going downhill after '05 when KW's only goal of the offseason was to improve our bench. Paid relatively big money for Mack/Cintron...yet when these guys had to step in due to injuries last year they were worse than most teams rookies who stepped up and they have no upside. Moral of the story get young talent vs. keeping around older utility guys. I also think Uribe offensively will be terrible as a sub and that ozzie will have a different lineup everyday to keep him fresh which results in no hitters getting comfortable or in a rhythm.
  2. A coworker told me of this and I thought for sure a prospect or reliever would be included. I will hold judgement until Part B of the deal works itself out but if it doesn't I am having deja vu to last year when I heard we resigned Pods (similar to resigning Uribe) thinking it was just so he would be signed and tradeable, that didn't work out too well. Lets just hope something to unload Uribe/Cintron (or hopefully both) is going down soon.
  3. he wasn't named the most over-rated baseball player for nothing... KW please stay far...far away...
  4. Anyone have a DVD of every playoff game they would "give" me. (give in the sense of the FBI Warning played before movies). PM me if a possibility. I have the DVD set but it only glosses over the division series and ALCS which is annoying.
  5. KW- please absolve us of dealing with these players next year...thank you....AJ can stay if he stops GDP and popping up and actually hits to the opposite field. Damn how can you have this many terrible players on one team getting so many at bats. Uribe: .409 Pierzynski: .393 Podsednik: .384 Erstad: .379 Cintron: .338 Gonzalez: .301 Hall: .248
  6. This guy is terrible and makes watching him play nearly unbearable. Please spare us this next year. Sorry for the rant. But this guy is Ozzie's Neifi Perez!
  7. Apparently Erstad hurt himself today swinging the bat in the sixth inning so no worries he won't be taking our prospects at bats any longer. And with Thome out Pods can get used to DHing.
  8. I can't believe how many players currently on this team make me sick to watch can we please get rid of in no particular order (uribe, cintron, pods, erstad, bukvich) damn! This is a new low for this team as far as I am concerned...
  9. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 09:40 PM) I could give less than two s***s about the Cubs. I am guessing in Ames, Iowa you don't share an office with a bunch of obnoxious cubs fans who give you s*** every day about the Cubs being in/near first and the Sox sharing the cellar with the Royals. Personally I agree that they don't have legs in the playoffs but I would have said the same thing about the Cards last year..if Lilly/Marquis turn into Weaver/Suppan for two weeks in October stranger things can happen...and no one else in the NL seems close to dominating. All I wish is if we could have a box score where all the pitchers in the games ERAs aren't over 5.40...it is amazing to think it has come to this.
  10. Sox should just shut him down now and give sox fans a little relief from watching him get lit up everynight...oh wait, our prospects all have ERAs over 6 also...
  11. I don't mind this move, Mack was overpaid...as long as Pods/Erstad are not back next year we freed up ~$10mm to go after OFs in the off season. I fully expect Owens will be back next year as a cheap option, and they will replace him with another minor-leaguer if he doesn't pan out. Meaning that $10mm can be used to as money to pay dye more and pick up a FA or find two FA. Clearly the Sox weren't given any offers on Dye that they felt were worth more than the draft picks they will get this year. Which is really pathetic considering how good JD was last year. I am surprised we couldn't get rid of Pods as a base stealing option for a contender, I would rather have a bag of chips than watch him drop balls jump over the fence watching balls hit him in the a$$, etc.
  12. I don't think ML scouts ever really liked Iguchi, that is why he ended up with the sox in the first place for way less money than everyone thought he would get from NY or the Mariners. Iguchi was one of my favorite players though, glad I never got the st. pats jersey with Iguchi yet.
  13. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 11:30 PM) It was a great comeback. The most fun I've had at the park in a while. Things went from very grim to jubulation. was fun to taunt the group of 100-150 Tigers fans in left field who had been loud and obnoxious the whole game...best game I had been to this year (considering 3 rain outs, one snow out, plenty of 4-1, 6-0 losses, etc.)...nice to see the guys still compete on the back half of a double header.
  14. Without our five errors this could have been a great game...at least they kept it up and showed some heart... I think the worst thing about this season has been how bad our lineup has been against bullpens, wasn't there a streak where we were 0-50 off of opposing bullpens or something like that.
  15. Prediction for scores of second game, I am going twins 3, Sox 1...the twins have to be a bit tired from running so many bases during the day. ..Toby Hall is Karcovice without as solid of D-Fence...
  16. Kenny can point to this game as to why he doesn't offer Garland a full NTC next year.
  17. following from the Cubicle this game must be really painful to watch...I think the team is trying to make the case that we need to trade buehrle and showing just how many holes we need to fill. On other news hopefully the twins can't resign hunter, would be great to see him out of the central.
  18. I think season tickets are going to drop big time next year. The reality is most new season ticket holders thought they were buying into a playoff caliber team and would be going to playoff games, or they bought season tickets to get WS tickets in '05. If this team goes into rebuilding mode I wouldn't be surprised if season tickets go down to 15-18k next year. I agree the stadium is nicer and the area has clearly gentrified around the park but there is still a severe lack of entertainment around the park and the fact remains most suburban fans have to start battling the Dan Ryan right after the game to get home at a reasonable time while most fans taking the subway from the city would rather go out downtown or in their own neighborhood...I don't think the stadium or the neighborhood are a "draw". I also think plenty of the partial season ticket holders will bail out figuring they can just buy a few ticket at or below face rather than paying upfront.
  19. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 03:47 PM) nope. still don't love boone logan. While amusing, I don't think Boone should be calling anyone idiots... at the same time I like him 100x more than joakim noah and if he gets the job done who cares... Batman Begins is an excellent movie..
  20. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 06:16 PM) Reifert said it probably would be Owens coming up. At least when Garland pitches, they should let Garland hit and DH for Owens. He really can't hit. Who would have ever thought Pods and Erstad would get hurt? How long will Dye last? My over/under is 6 innings. Thanks KW for building a "glass" outfield...grinders who get hurt twice a year are what we want... With the lack of production we are getting from our overpaid bench and oft injured players we could easily make up the additional $5mm over what Buehrle is currently making and reward/keep our productive players...
  21. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 06:04 PM) Aside from an injury, there's nothing that's going to lessen his value. He could come out on Monday and get shelled and he's still going to be just as valuable as he is today. People know what they're getting from MB. Just think of all the insanity that comes into play in the final week or two before the trade deadline - you can't tell me that GM's don't feel the pressure. Sweat 'em out. It's for this reason that KW likes to deal early before the hysteria where you stand a greater chance of overpaying for the services of a guy like Jermaine Dye. As someone else stated more talent could become available from other teams, also some teams currently in contention could drop out of the race limiting the number of suitors...also as the clock gets closer and reality sets in that the Sox are not going to resign buehrle teams may feel they have the upper hand on KW. The best time to trade Buehrle was probably this weekend when everyone thought a signing was close, KW probably hoped someone would have upped their offer to entice him to sell at that time. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cubs make a run at Mark...he could replace Marshall in the rotation, he wants to stay in Chicago, and it would be a slap in the face to Sox fans. I don't know who the sox would ask in return or if they would just flat out refuse but if they offered Pie and a high level pitching prospect I think KW would be very interested.
  22. Well KW, Jerry & Co. will be screwing the bed if they don't get this deal done...I would have rather just traded Mark then run this charade and then trade him. No reason to piss off the fan base that is already pretty fed up with this season. I also think the Sox have taken their eyes off the other pressing potential trades while figuring this thing out, the longer this saga carries out the worse it is for all parties involved. I would guess that many fans will stop showing their support with their wallets and will be tuning into CSN next year vs. going to USC...
  23. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 11:16 AM) The exchange rate isn't that bad anymore. At least not like it used to...but the taxes there are still high. And the lack of a State Income Tax in Texas and Florida is why a lot of athletes have homes in those states. I believe Scottie Pippen had a home in Houston, as did Shaq before he went to the Heat. Exchange rate isn't bad at all now, used to be a larger issue. It doesn't matter where you live it matters where you earn your income so I don't think where players make their permanent residents matters much. Other than FL will protect your primary home in bankruptcy (why OJ has a mansion there that no one can take from him).
  24. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 10:49 AM) ... Interesting. So his contract offer from the Orioles was higher, but he would have taken less money home after taxes. OT, I wonder how often that comes into play in contracts? No wonder the state of Illinois has a $ problem, we tax athletes half as much as anybody else. This has always been a big factor, that is why FL / TEX have big advantages no income tax...also why playing in Canada has been looked poorly upon (bad exchange rates also), what is really interesting is how states charge visiting athletes income taxes for road games (ie. Illinois charges, Shap, A-Rod, etc.) for the six days they work in IL, it is big money.
