  1. Ley Septimo Baseball Reference Apparently, he started as an outfielder in the Arizona System and converted to a pitcher in 2008.
  2. It's probably true and I'm rather disappointed. I used to argue he was the best right Chicago right fielder because even though his numbers weren't quite as good as some north side roidhead, at least he did it naturally. This kind of puts a bullet in my argument. Now you can just say Sosa had the better steroids.
  3. Linky Here's a nice little article summarizing the game. Not too shabby.
  4. Man, I feel terrible for that kid Lewis. Get him out of there already.
  5. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ May 16, 2007 -> 05:17 PM) Seemed like the only rookie, Verlander, did fine throughout the season to me. Besides the games he faced the whitesox Not exactly. Verlander had a pretty bad August and September. 6. QUOTE(JERMAINEDYE4MVP @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 09:38 PM) FACT! I REALLY DON'T THINK THIS TEAM IS GOING TO BE ANY GOOD THIS SEASON AND I BELIEVE THAT KW WILL TRY AND TRADE DYE, BUEHRLE, IGUCHI, THOME, CREDE, AND EVEN KONERKO BEFORE THE DEADLINE KIND OF LIKE THE MARLINS DID AND PICK UP YOUNG TALENT. DISCUSS. The only fact I see here is that this is an opinion. Do you care to discuss this further?
  7. This could get interesting. Zell has to sell the cubs and will do so after 2007. Since he has part ownership in the White Sox, it would be in his best interests to have more Sox games on WGN. More games on the superstation would mean more money for the team and more widespread interest in the team around the country. I've always believed the Tribune company hid television revenue from the cubs bottom line. Otherwise, if they would've shown huge profits every year without putting the money back into the team, even cubs fans would've revolted against them. More Sox games on television, more revenue, and hopefully, a consistently healthy payroll. Who do I think is going to buy the cubs? I've heard that Jerry Colangelo has an interest in them. If I remember correctly, he spent millions he didn't have and put the Diamondbacks in debt for quite awhile. Wasn't at least chairman when they won their World Series? I really doubt Reisndorf will allow Cuban to buy the cubs since Cuban will be like another Steinbrenner/Hicks and drive up league payroll. However, if Reinsdorf blocks Cuban, that would be an extreme conflict of interest in his partnership with Zell since the billionaire will want to maximize the cubs sale. In my dream situation, Zell would sell the cubs for $750 million, use most of that money to buy the White Sox, and dayam, we have our own billionaire owner! Has anyone yet noticed the tone in the Tribune columns since the announced sale? Rick Morissey did a complete rip job and starts out with "Wrigley is still a dump". Look for articles reviewing Hendry's screwups and how idiotic "Wrigley" fans are for filling the dump.
  8. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 10:25 AM) Where we would be with Garcia right now is not the point. The point is the White Sox got two boom or bust prospects for a solid starting pitcher, with both of them having shady backgrounds. KW couldn't have gotten one prospect who looks like he's actually starting to figure things out for Garcia? That's my problem with the trade, and nothing beyond that. Hindsight is 20/20, and while Garcia does indeed look like s***, he didn't look this s***ty in December. To get a 5'10 LHP with injury concerns and mediocre control in AA along with a throw-in for a guy coming off of a 4.53 ERA, 215 IP year is unacceptable, period. Holy crap. If KW knew enough to trade a pitcher who can barely throw a fastball above 87 mph, don't you think GMs and scouts knew that too? Garcia did not win 17 games because he was a solid pitcher. He won 17 games because the Sox offense saved his ass. I even read articles last summer where scouts said Garcia's done. Now if scouts, GMs, and most fans who watched him pitch knew that, do you think any GM in his right mind would offer much for Freddy? This spring has shown what everyone (except maybe you) knew. Freddy hasn't gotten the ball past 84 mph and is already hurt. Get off it already.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 04:20 PM) I'll give you the 2006 Cardinals...but here's the key thing. When all of the cards have been shown, when each team has had its season on the line...what is the one commonality? Their pitching stepped up. In 2005, the White Sox pitching staff carried a mediocre offense to 110 wins. The pitching was just phenomenal the entire year. In 2006, the Cardinals struggled, but when they hit the playoffs, they finally had a rotation where guys stepped up, and those pitchers took care of business. I was saying in July of last year that the Mets would lose in the playoffs the moment they ran into a team which was pitching well, and they did. Most talent is not the issue. Most talent, and most performance, at the key spots is a much bigger issue to my eyes. You get starting pitching and bullpen pitching...and you look pretty darn good as long as you're putting something on the field. Especially if you combine that with defense. I agree with all your points. The reason I brought this up was because I constantly read posts of which team had more talent...'06 versus the '07 White Sox. I vaguely remember seeing someone write the '07 team isn't as talented as last year's team and probably won't win 80 games. I can't agree with that at all. This may or may not be the most talented team. There's no way to know that until after the season is over. I don't even think the 2005 team was the most talented overall team in baseball. The offense hit a lot of home runs but wasn't the best offense in the league. They did, however, have the pitching staff who pitched the best throughout the season and was even better in the playoffs. People can argue all they want whether or not the White Sox are more talented than last year or whether or not they're even the most talented team in the AL Central. It's the team who can play the best most consistently, and...at the right time.
  10. Can anyone here say the 2006 Cardinals or the 2005 White Sox had the most talent when they won their respective World Series? If this was truly the case, the Red Sox and the Yankees would win it every year. Granted talent is a big factor in making the playoffs but it's not the only means to the ultimate end. Baseball is such a great game and is so unpredictable that I've watched many extremely talented teams finish in last place. This year's team has more than enough talent to make the playoffs. It all hinges on whether or not that talent plays to its capabilities, long enough, and with everyone on the same page.
  11. QUOTE(juddling @ Mar 15, 2007 -> 09:59 AM) if i remember correctly, that was the same rap that Thornton had coming over from Seattle. It may take a little while but hopefully Coop can straighten out Sisco just like Thornton. I was at spring training right after Thornton came to the Sox. I didn't know anything about him and didn't even realize they brought him in the game I was at. I sat behind the plate among about a dozen scouts with radar guns. Matt has such a fluid motion that you would think the ball would come in about 90 mph tops. Every fastball came in between 95 and 97 mph (and eventually hit 99 during the season). I overheard the scouts talking to each other saying the Sox got a steal. I truly believe Sisco is going to be a steal when it's all said and done. He actually pitched very well in 2005 and had a horrible 2006. You know the talent is there and he's been effective before. I think just being around Thornton and Cooper is really going to straighten out his mechanics as they're pretty similar pitchers (tall, hard throwing lefties). With Matt, it was as simple as extending his stride and slotting his arm angle properly. I hope history repeats itself.
  12. Now, if Wood was doing the towel throwing drill while in the hot tub, he could've dried himself off much better and prevented slippage.
  13. I love the irony in all this. Because Hendry got stupid and decided to pay Ted Lily $10 million a year and Marquis about $6 million, he made it more difficult to sign his own ace. I know the cubs have a lot of money, but I believe "BIG Z" is less likely to sign an extension with them than Buehrle with the White Sox.
  14. Funny, when I read things I don't care for, I just move on and let others debate it, post their thoughts, or let the thread die. I'm pretty sure I've never said anything disparaging about someone's idea for a thread.
  15. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jan 30, 2007 -> 12:04 PM) The White Sox already did this: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/cws/fan_fo...inder_rules.jsp not the same.
  16. No male White Sox fan will ask his buddy to accompany him to the washroom.
  17. No male White Sox fan will own a dog smaller than Paulie's first base glove. Any male White Sox fan caught watching "Dreamgirls" without a date, will have his membership revoked and banned from U.S. Cellular Field.
  18. I'd have to say if the White Sox won 20 more World Series, all those would be bigger than a Bears Super Bowl. I love the Bears but I love the White Sox that much more.
  19. Right off the top of my head it's the game where Bevington went to bring in a relief pitcher and didn't have anyone warming up. The white flag trade while only 3 1/2 games out of first place ranks right up there. Other than the 10/26/2005, my favorite memory is Bo Jackson, after coming back from hip replacement surgery, hitting a game winning, pinch hit home run versus the Mariners to clinch the '93 division.
  20. QUOTE(TLAK @ Dec 28, 2006 -> 06:33 PM) Don't know if he qualifies but Geoff Blum, who didn't do much in the regular season, made a loud noise in the WS. Arguably the most famous "one hit" in White Sox history.
  21. I've taken a little time to think this over before I posted. First of all, for all those so-called Sox fans that are ready to give up on the 2007 season before New Year's, the bandwagon ride is over. You guys sound as if you started rooting for my beloved team in October 2005. Feel free to jump off the bandwagon and I hope you break your ankles as you hit the ground. You can hate the trade or you can love the trade but you never give up on the team. You root for the player but love the laundry. Now my post has a lot of sarcasm in it so try to follow me. KW gets panned for trading Freddy Garcia for Gavin Floyd and Gio Hernandez. My first reaction to the Freddy trade was I thought KW should've received more in return for a guy who throws 87 mph heat and allows runners to run the bases like it's a merry-go-round. However, I decided to do a little research before I form an opinion. Yah he's a big game pitcher and won 17 games last year. Out of the 17 games he won, the Sox offense scored 6 or more runs in 13 of them. The main reason he won those many games is because the Sox were third in MLB in runs scored. Here's a guy who gave up nearly 5 earned runs a game, is in his walk year, and I expected to get a kings ransom for him? If KW could've got a better package for Freddy don't you think he would've done so? Well, ok I was wrong and decided Kenny knows better. The Sox did manage to get the 2nd ranked left-handed prospect in all of baseball and got Floyd as basically a throw-in. This trade basically opens up a roster spot for Cy McCarthy! I mean, after all, he did manage to shut down Boston, Texas, and the heavy hitting 2005 Twins, right? This guy came up and set the baseball world on fire, much like Liriano did in 2006. He's ready for ten Cy Young awards in a row! Then guess what? Kenny lost his mind again and traded our "Dontrelle Willis"! How could he do this to us? I like many others thought BMac was ruined in 2006 because they used him in the bullpen. It's a completely different mindset preparing for relief pitching as it is for starting. You look at how the Red Sox ruined Jonathan Papelbon by using him in relief. Papelbon was one of the BoSox's top starting pitcher prospects and decided to use him as a reliever. That guy had a horrible year and only saved 35 games with a 0.92 era. Obviously, the name of the game is to get the batters out no matter what the situation. Papelbon failed miserably. So KW trades Cy McCarthy and we only received the top ranked left handed prospect (6th overall I believe) in all of baseball. In addition we get a reliever who can throw some serious heat. This trade could do for the White Sox what trading Pierzyinski did for the Twins (Nathan, Liriano, and Bonser). The Garcia trade opened up the 5th spot in the rotation for a player that has question marks. We then traded McCarthy for 3 question marks but could eventually be better than Brandon. The 2007 season does not completely hinge on the 5 spot. It hinges on one through four to pitch the way we expect them to. You can't compare this situation to the 2004 5th starter debacle. The only decent pitcher the Sox had that year was Buehrle. The rest of the starting rotation wasn't that strong with a nearly 5.00 staff era. I fully expect this year's front four to be one of the best in the AL. Buehrle will bounce back and Jon will probably flirt with 18 wins again. Who the heck said Contreras was injury prone? He's averaged 31 starts the past three years. Please tell me where he's injury prone. The wild card in the rotation is Vasquez. He's got the stuff but does he have the mental makeup to get past his so-called 5 inning starts? I tell you what, if Javier had the same run support Freddy got, Javier would've won 17+ games. In his last ten starts, the Sox averaged less than 2 runs per game. It's these four guys that will make or break the 2007 season. Not McCarthy. Floyd will not be in the running for the fifth starter position. Kenny has said he will either be in the bullpen for this year or if he decides he'd rather start, he'll start out in the minors. I truly believe Charlie Haegar will get the 5th spot. I don't care if he throws a knuckler or 100 mph heat. If you can get the hitters out, you're doing your job. I've seen plenty of guys throw 95+ and get knocked around like a pinball. For the true White Sox fans, get the hell off the ledge. The White Sox still have one of the top ranked offenses in all of baseball. The front four rotation won't be as bad as it was for the 90 win 2006 team. The fifth starter only needs to be .500 or better and the bullpen will be downright nasty. It's going to be a great year and I can't wait for the season to start.
  22. QUOTE(toasty @ Dec 9, 2006 -> 12:55 PM) nope, but they did give him 3 years 20 mil It's worse than that. The report says 3 years, $28 million. Linke The Cubs accomplished the rare double double: strenghtening the Cardinals rotation while weakening their own. The guy had a 6.02 era under one of the best pitching coaches in Dave Duncan. This blows since it really makes it more difficult to re-sign our own pitchers. This gives me even more reason to hate the cubs.
  23. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 04:05 PM) 2005 ALDS, 9th inning, Jeter on first, Yankees down by 1, 0 outs, ARod GIDP while swinging to try to get everything in one swing. Let's put it this way, if the $25 million dollar man bunted Jeter over, don't you think he would've got reamed for not swinging for the fences? "We pay him $25 million a year to bunt?"
  24. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 09:20 PM) http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...rtnered=rss_mlb It's funny how no one takes KW at face value. Maybe he's not talking about it because it's not true? I hope I'm wrong and he does extend them.
  25. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 12:24 PM) http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...rtnered=rss_cws After reading the article it seems like B-Mac to Charlotte or back to the Bullpen is a real possibility for 2007: Kenny Williams "Yes, we really need to trade one of our starters so we can get Brian into the rotation." Baaaaaaad poker face if you ask me. I'm all in! Don't worry, Kenny will get rid of one of the $10 million salaries, get a lot in return, and Brian will be in the starting rotation.
