Sunday Yankees vs Whitesox 7/16/06 Gamethread

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:54 PM) That ball was hit straight at the 2b, no? He had to hold up in case it was a line drive. Yes, but if he would have run hard and slid into second, it wouldn't have been close. He pulled up and went into second standing up. -

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:53 PM) Jim Thome is the one guy I'm not gonna fault on the basepaths. He knows he slow as heck, but he f***in sprints everytime. He didn't exactly go hard into secondbase. I know he's been great, but there is absolutely no reason for that to ever happen. -

When is the White Sox staff going to do something about the atrocious baserunning. Quit defending Thome DJ. He didn't hustle into second. Thome walking into second costs the Sox a run. -

Thank God the Sox offense has been on fire this season. -

People were talking about how the Mets are so desperate for a starter. Trachsel has won his last 7 starts. If Pedro can get healthy and Glavine, I see no reason why they would give the Sox an overwhelming package for a guy like Garcia. -

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:33 PM) Yeah, that 1-0 shutout in the World Series game clincher wasn't a big deal. Or that clincher in 2005. Nothing special about game 3 of the ALDS That was last year. Tom Seaver pitched some great games, I don't think I'd want him on the mound right now. -

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:32 PM) What is Gordon, 38? He's signed a 3 year deal worth $18 million. That's a huge gamble for teams to take on. I think its a bigger gamble to pay Garcia $9 million next season and trot him out to the mound every 5th day. People sitting in the bleachers may get hurt, lawsuits will follow. -

If Philadelphia really is stupid enough to give the Sox Gordon for Garcia, it should be done immediately. Even Hawk is referring to Garcia as meat right now. -

The White Sox have only won 5 games this year when they have scored 3 or less runs. The good news is that they usually score more than 3, the bad is if the offense slows down, this could be one tough second half. They are 5-18 when they score less than 4 runs. Of course, most teams have poor records when they don't score much. -

QUOTE(soxunited @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 11:20 AM) Lineup: LF Podsednik, Scott 2B Iguchi, Tadahito DH Thome, Jim 1B Konerko, Paul RF Dye, Jermaine C Pierzynski, AJ 3B Crede, Joe CF Mackowiak, Rob SS Uribe, Juan Glad that Konerko is back, and Crede too. I think the Sox are going to need to score runs in mass quantity today. -
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 11:11 AM) LOL I see you are doubting the magical abilities of Dr Coop. Its sort of my personal crusade. I can't believe all the posts I see of acquiring rubbish who will magically turn to gold working with Cooper. Cooper was the Sox pitching coach before last season, and I didn't see everyone thinking he was a miracle worker then. I do think he's a good pitching coach. I just don't think he "fixes" everybody. If the guy was the miracle worker a lot of people think he is, would the board have any posts which state the concern with the current pitching staff, the one with the greatest rotation ever assembled?

QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 10:27 AM) A trade in the works for Politte? http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/whitesox.asp?id=208283 The best the Sox could hope for is a non-prospect. Most likely he will be released IMO.

I think the problem is the pitchers are being compared to last year, and to last year's playoff run when, in both instances they pitched way better than can be reasonable expected again, at least for an entire season. Buerhle, even with his last 3 bombings, has numbers pretty close to what you could reasonable expect. Garland was a journeyman basically until last year. Freddy was good and bad at Seattle, so its not shocking to see him with an ERA over 4. Contreras has been solid, better than could be expected, and Vazquez has been mediocre for the vast majority of his career. Expections of the pitching staff were way too high. Unreasonably high. The greatest 5 man rotation in history? Please. Its a good thing the offense improved this year. With last years offense and this year's pitching, the Sox probably would be looking at dueling it out with Cleveland for 3rd place.

The problem is Coop is in NY COOP WILL FIX HIM

QUOTE(shoota @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 06:38 PM) I never stated KW disregards Ozzie's views on players, or that Ozzie doesn't have influence on the roster. KW's and Ozzie's roster decisions don't have to coincide, and when they don't, KW has the power to trump Ozzie's say. If Ozzie feels strongly that he doesn't want someone on the roster, he won't be on the roster. Until recently, maybe after watching Politte pitch too much, he apparently felt that way about Tracey.
-
QUOTE(Contreras @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 06:25 PM) It's a shame, but it had to be done. I hope Clifford has a miraculous turnaround and big success in the majors (well, in the NL, anyway). I think its a longshot Politte is ever more than a mop-up guy again. 3 out of the past 4 seasons he's been pretty pathetic.
-
QUOTE(shoota @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 06:19 PM) Ozzie might feel that way about Tracey, but KW's opinion trumps Ozzie's. KW's not going to put a guy on the roster that Ozzie wouldn't put into a game. I don't understand how people on this board don't want to believe Ozzie's huge influence on the roster. I understand KW likes to flex his muscles every now and then, but he's knows better than to disreguard Ozzie's view on certain players.
-
Buerhle's problem is that he is not locating. He's leaving everything right down the heart of the plate or missing the corners by a few inches for balls. When he gets his command back he'll be fine, but as long as its off a little, he's a gas can.
-
QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 06:09 PM) July has been rough. 10.2 IP, 11 H, 7 BB, 8 K, 8.43 ERA, 1.68 WHIP He'll fill Politte's shoes pretty well with those numbers.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 06:05 PM) Any chance Clifford accepts a AAA assignment? I wouldn't be surprised. KW is probably going to try and find a major league job for him. If there isn't anything I would imagine Charlotte is just as nice as any other place he may land, unless he just wants to go home and rest and maybe see if someone will give him a shot in the spring.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 06:03 PM) Yeah I always knew the person who said they had a source Tracey would never play for the sox was a bunch of bs. It didnt make sense at all..... Im not saying the poster is a liar im just saying his source is garbage. That's pretty harsh. Maybe Ozzie's sensitivity training paid off for Tracey. I think Ozzie thought of Tracey after the Texas incident much the same way he felt of Arnie Munoz, a guy who if he struck out every batter he saw this spring would not have been on the White Sox roster.
-
Politte is done. He's a nice guy, but as I said before so is my next door neighbor and I don't want him pitching for the White Sox. Hopefully Cliff could hook up with Detroit or the Yankees, some team the Sox may have to battle with to get in the playoffs, because he is and will be batting practice. I'm glad Tracey is being given a chance, if he blows up or starts walking guys at an alarming rate, I'm sure KW will do something about it or maybe even Coop will fix him.

A nice perk for season ticketholders may be to invite them to take a couple of cuts off Politte.
