Cubs, White Sox, & Red Sox scouting Juan Gone
Dick Allen replied to SSH2005's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 07:06 AM) See my thinking is this. Borch may never get it. But I still think he would provide the same amount of power, that Gonzalez would (and then you've got to take into consideration Gone's injury problems). And with the whole roids issue, I think the Sox are probably gonna stay away, but that's JMHO. You may be right, but KW has been on Juan's tail for a few years. If that Ordonez/Garciaparra trade would have happened a couple of years ago, Gonzalez would have been Magglio's replacement. As to the roids issue, one of minor leaguers the Sox signed and invited to camp was the first player MLB suspended for roids last season. I do think if the Sox were really considering this, we would have heard more about it by now. -

He would come very cheap. Cheaper than Timo. If he accepted the fact he was a 4th outfielder, pinch hitter, and a once in a while DH against tough left handers, he might not be a bad guy to have around. There is no way you could count on him for a full season, but picking his spots, if he hit like he hit in 2003, he would be excellent. -
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 18, 2006 -> 08:18 PM) The Reds can't afford to get rid of decent pitching. Hancock was listed at 6'3", 207 pounds so if he gained 17 pounds he's still only 224 pounds. 6'3", 224 pounds is hardly overweight. Another team will pick him up in no time. What he's listed at might have been his weight in high school.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 08:50 AM) It isn't reported for publicity reason, would be my guess. There is a legal limit, a max capacity, and the facility has to be able to prove they don't have too many inside the park. That is why there are turnstiles with counters. Why else would they count people going in and out? I don't believe the turnstiles have counters anymore. Those hand held things are probably more accurate. I'm sure they keep track of the attendance actual and tickets sold or accounted for, but remember this you aren't going to ever have more people than total of tickets either comped or sold. I don't believe the fire marshall is ever going to have a problem with the amount of people at USCF. As far as vendors and White Sox employees having to "swipe" in, that's pretty routine practice today. I would venture to guess that's more for security reasons than worrying about going over capacity.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Feb 18, 2006 -> 06:44 PM) Does 16-11, 8-8 in the Big 10 get IU in? I think they'll either be 15-12, 7-9 or the record above. Guess their play in the Big 10 Tourney will be the deciding factor. 16-11,8-8 gets Mike Davis an extra home game or 2 in the NIT unless they make a great run in the Big Ten Tournament. -

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Feb 18, 2006 -> 05:33 PM) Here's to a total Iowa collapse so that Alford doesn't get the IU job. Here's to Alford going to Indiana. As an Iowa alum, I don't see this guy being consistenty successful at Iowa. I do think he would be better at Indiana. He probably could recruit Indiana kids to go to IU. I think he's been at Iowa 7 years and the only guy I believe he recruited who has played in the NBA is Reggie Evans, a JUCO transfer. Haluska will probably see time in the NBA, but anyone else on the current roster is doubtful. -

Most people on this board would have an entirely different opinion on this issue if the same thing was said but ARod was playing for the White Sox and Ozzie was managing the Yankees, or if it was Dusty Baker who said these things. Ozzie rarely apologizes. He did this time. That pretty much proves he was very wrong. I think the apology should be enough to bring this story to a close. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 02:41 PM) keep the faith, tickets will become available throughout the season. That's what a lot of people aren't realizing. There are a ton of people sitting on 81 game plans that have no desire to go to a quarter of those games. Ebay and craigslist will be loaded with tickets this year. And there will be a lot of people unloading by USCF.

Ozzie is really backpedalling about the ARod thing now. Kudos to him for apologizing. -
QUOTE(daa84 @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 03:03 PM) this move is sooo stupid...its the first day of spring training and we already blew the season Exactly. Now that 2006 is over, what are the Sox plans for 2007?

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 03:23 PM) "In this photo provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for Major League Baseball player Albert Belle is shown in a booking mug on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006. Belle was arrested in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Thursday and charged with stalking. Belle tracked his ex-girlfriend with a GPS device and repeatedly threatened her, according to a police probable cause statement filed in support of stalking charges. He made an initial court appearance late Thursday, and a judge set bail at $108,000, ordered him to be electronically monitored and to stay away from the victim." He doesn't look too happy. It also looks like Albert hasn't missed many meals since his playing days ended.

QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 11:52 PM) Guillen World Titles: 3 Braves '95 as a player, Marlins '03 as a coach, Sox '05 as a manager. Ozzie was with the White Sox in 95. He played in one WS in 1999 with the Braves and was 0-5. The Braves lost that WS to the Yankees. I really doubt you can give much credit to the thirdbase coach for Florida's championship in 2003. He does deserve a lot of credit for the White Sox championship, of course. I've never understood judging players by World Titles especially in team sports. If that were the criteria Timo Perez would now be considered superior to Albert Pujols, Vlad Guerrero, Bobby Abreu, etc. -
QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 09:46 PM) What for Albert or the story? It just seems weird to me they would hold him without bond because of an allegation of stalking. People shoot people dead for no reason and get bond. Its not like Albert is going to be able to hide anywhere, he's pretty well known.
-
Albert Belle was arrested today and charged with stalking his ex-girlfriend. Didn't he recently get married? Its just a wire story on espn.com's baseball section, so who really knows if its true or not, but he supposedly is being held without bond. Does that seem right?

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 07:08 PM) Timeline Alford Hired at Iowa Bobby Knight fired Mike Davis instated as Interim coach Alford given extension Davis named head coach There was no job offer, but there wasn't exactly an interview process either. But back then Alford made it clear he was interested in the job. He has not done that this time, at least up until now. As an Iowa graduate, I was very excited when they brought Alford in. I would have mixed emotions if he were to leave. I think the University really stood by him when he was getting a lot of shots because of Pierce, most of which were unfair IMO. Most schools would have canned him with that situation, and the dissappointing results. I think he has done a good job this year, but he still isn't recruiting studs, and this success could easily be a one year thing. I just have the feeling if he leaves, I'll be pissed, but if he stays, a year from now I will be shaking my head asking myself "why didn't he leave?" George Raveling recruited awesomely his 3 seasons at Iowa. Unfortunately he couldn't coach a game worth a s***. Dr. Tom coached pretty well, but he recruited average players. The overlap with Raveling's players and Dr. Tom's coaching were the high times for the Hawkeyes after Lute Olson headed west.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 06:57 PM) A-Rod's ball-slapping incident on Bronson Arroyo was pretty ghey though. I lost any respect for him after that weak s***. It was his only option. He was dead meat. The blame for ARod's waffling should be laid directly on whoever is overseeing this event. They should be the one's determining which team ARod should play for. Maybe they should have Ozzie decide where all the questionable players will play. -

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 06:37 PM) A Rod is a fraud. He is not Dominican. You are born in America, you are American. How can you defend him? The guy is not a winner. What has he ever won? He is full of stats. That is all. In his 3 seasons at Texas he missed 1 game total. He drove home almost 400 runs, he hit 156 home runs, that's an average of 52 a season and hit over .300 while playing a stellar SS. He certainly pulled his weight in Texas. He was a most deserving MVP last season with the Yankees. To say he is not a winner is not accurate. He has conducted himself with class throughout his career, even with all the jealousy of his contract. I would be proud if he wore a White Sox uniform. Baseball is a team game. ARod has not been on a team with a decent pitching staff since his Seattle days. This whole thing with the Dominican Republic and the US is only because both sides were pulling on his sleeves begging him to play for them. Ozzie saying the DR doesn't need his "ass", is a lie. The guy is the best player alive. -
Alford released a statement saying his focus is on helping his team win the Big Ten title. He obviously didn't remove himself from consideration for this job, which to me says he would be very interested. I know Alford talks to Bobby Knight quite a bit. I would assume Knight wouldn't want him taking the Indiana job. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out. I do know one thing, if he does go to Indiana, Steve Alford will be public enemy #1 in Iowa City.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 01:51 PM) Ozzie Guillen world titles: One A-Rod's rings: ZERO A-Rod is a fraud. Rather than being a savior in Texas, he b****ed until he got traded to a better situation. And since he's been traded, Texas has improved and the Yankees haven't won a ring. I can't wait until we play them this season and Buehrle handles him like usual. Also, as far as I'm concerned, I'm glad Ozzie speaks his mind. Makes for some good entertainment. Alex Rodriquez is the greatest baseball player in the world, one of the greatest of all time. Look at what he did in Texas, his play wasn't the reason they sucked, maybe his contract was, but how is it his fault Hicks offerred it to him? WS titiles have nothing to do with it. Rodriquez has dual citizenship. The DR and US wanted him on their team. He was in an unusual and awkward spot. Maybe he could have handled it better, I don't know, but its certainly not Ozzie Guillen's place to pop off about it. For a guy desperate to spend time with his family, maybe he ought to worry his family and no one else. -

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 01:08 PM) You're right, but I still find it funny. People, especially people in the media, do not like to talk openly. There are plenty of people who refuse to speak their mind. As we are seeing, it can be interesting when they do. Ozzie sure does like ripping people, especially fellow latins. However, when he was getting some criticism last season during the teams bad run, he talked of quitting. The more he is out in the open with his jabs, the more shots he's setting himself up for. The question will be: Can he take it? I just wish he would take the approach of staying out of people's business he has no right to question. He didn't enjoy it when the mayor questioned his not going to the White House, and there he is popping off about Nomar and ARod. Seems hypocritical, but he hates hypocrites. -
Turn on the radio and listen to the sweet rumblings of Chris Singleton. I actually think Singleton is going to be decent. He was pretty good at Soxfest I thought.

Why must Ozzie pop off about these things? Is it really necessary? What would people around here think if someone like Joe Torre popped off about a White Sox player? It wouldn't happen because Torre has too much class. -
Hopefully he's taking Brantley's place on Baseball Tonight. I doubt we could be that lucky.
