  1. QUOTE(gosox41 @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 07:53 AM) I agree. IMHO, Frank is a more productive player then Thome when healthy. They're both coming off injuries. Frank had a broken bone, Thome had elbow surgery (along with chronic back problems). Who's to say that Frank is higher risk to suffer another injury over Thome. Can Jim's right elbow handle the stress of 500+ plate appearances in a season + batting practice (need to have timing) and who knows how many swings he's going to take. The way I see this trade for the 2006 season is Anderson can do what Rownad did in 2005 so it's break even their. If PK leaves this trade looks great. If he stays then I don't see how this team is any better unless someone can guarantee that Thome will be healthy for a full season where as Frank wasn't healthy for most of 2005. It seems like a lot of risk (including financial) for very little reward considering that Thomas can hit 40+ HR's and have a ton of walks. Bob The big problem is Thomas cannot be counted to be able to play at all. His foot is still not healed and it may not be healed by opening day. There is better than a 50% chance his career is over. If he is able to return, it is more than likely just a matter of time before it breaks again. Thome obviously has risk, but he is cheaper than Thomas was last year, with what the Phillies are throwing in, and if he's healthy will put up similar numbers a healthy Frank would put up, and also add a presence from the left side of the plate. Besides that, he also could play the field.
  2. I like it. Its worth a shot. The Sox top prospects are OF's and Rowand who was great in 2004, wasn't much more than average this championship season. Even defensively where he is given so much credit, I thought with the exception of about a two week period, which included their trip to NY, he had regressed. He wasn't getting very good jumps and Ozzie was pissed with his habit of playing too deep. His throwing was very erratic. That said, what's to say he won't go back to his 2004 form both at the plate and in the field? The Sox have to start making room for their top prospects if they aren't going to deal them, so moving Rowand makes a lot of sense. Thome is a gamble, a huge gamble, but if he's healthy, they have him for a huge discount.
  3. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 04:38 PM) Dye was our best overall OFer. 7.5M for Thome aint' s*** and he's not oft injured. He's had one injury plagued season. Exactly. Considering the Sox paid Thomas $8.5 million last season plus a $3.5 million buyout, Thome is a bargain. He is far more likely to be able to play a full schedule.
  4. QUOTE(scotty22hotty @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 04:35 PM) horrible... the sox will pay 7.5 million a year for the next 3 years for an old, injured 1b. Arow was our best OF... this trade makes no sense... If Thome is healthy, those figures are a steal. Doesn't he have 4 years left? I think his elbow will be fine, what concerns me is his 35 year old back. The other positive is Jim Thome is as high of character guy as there is in MLB.
  5. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 04:35 PM) IF is a huge word. Anaheim may be finalizing their offer to Konerko's agent right now? Then where would we be? Personally, I believe Williams doesn't make this trade unless he's absolutely certain signing Konerko is feasible. I wouldn't expect Konerko to promise Williams his loyalty, than in the event Anaheim adds a few more million, turn his back on Williams and accept LA's offer. I read somewhere the Angels are willing to go 5 years , $60 million for Konerko, not quite what Landis was looking for but pretty significant. The Sox have an excellent shot of re-signing him.
  6. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 04:28 PM) Rowand struck out 116 times last season, but only took 32 walks. Yes, Thome K's a ton, but so did Rowand...and in Thome's last 9 full seasons, he drew less than 100 walks only once. We have room for a lot of strikeouts on this team now. B.A.'s job is 2 fold...produce around what Rowand did offensively (hit .250 or better with 15 or better home runs), and catch that damn ball in CF. I have no problem getting rid of Rowand, in fact I called it about a month ago., but if Anderson plays everyday, he'll go way higher than 116 k's. Add about 170 for Thome, plus with whats left, thats a lot of strikeouts for a team wanting to play part time smallball. There are obviously other deals coming. Ozzie said he wanted more speed. He gets what he wants. I think Pierre is going to be playing CF.
  7. I like Anderson as a prospect. The only question I have if he becomes the starter in CF is team strikeouts. Thome fans a ton, and BA is going to ring up a pretty big total himself.
  8. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 02:57 PM) You trade Hernandez because: 1) He's old. 2) He's expensive. 3) He wants to start. Who's the 6th starter? How about Cotts? Or maybe someone else in the minors will take BMAC's spot as 6th starter. You deal from strength...and what the White Sox have is an extra starter, a lot of young talent in the minors and a LHR. I've learned there is no such thing as a can't miss player. For every one of those, there is a Mike Piazza or Mark Buehrle. Saying low draft choices that end up being great. Trying to find a suitor for Duque would be pretty tough, considering he is going to be making about $5 million next season. The Sox should just keep him around for spot starts and relief appearances, and most of all his overwhelming influence on Contreras.
  9. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 20, 2005 -> 09:07 AM) He's not. That's what I thought. Farmio has some crazy ideas. Last trade deadline he said Peavy and Oswalt were very available.
  10. QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Nov 20, 2005 -> 08:56 AM) I posted this in the White Sox Weekly thread, but I thought it probably should have gone here. Ed Farmer during the show yesterday said he had heard from a friend that Gload was gonna sign with the Padres. Now, I won't miss him, but somebody's gotta play first for us. Unless the Sox released him, I do not believe Gload is a free agent.
  11. QUOTE(J-MAN @ Nov 15, 2005 -> 02:09 PM) I am new to this but thought the balance due on season tickets was due in January. I went to my account on-line and saw an invoice was issued for balance of season ticket cost on 11/11 and due 12/8. No big deal since but wondered if this is earlier than it used to be - big chunk to lay out just before Christmas! Talk to your rep, but I'm 99.9% sure you need 50% by Dec 1, they may let it slide until the 8th, and the balance Jan. 20.
  12. Always remember if the woman has an apple, (s)he also has a banana.
  13. I think it all depends on the situation. ARod got how many more million chosing to play for Texas? He got ripped, but the dollar figure was staggering, you can't blame him. Most of these guys are away from their families almost the entire season, so some choose to be with them an additional 6 weeks and pick a team that trains by where they live. Even Magglio, who is ripped over and over again, did get more money from Detroit than most thought he could get if he had no health questions. It looks like he got $15 million more than the White Sox offered back when he was healthy. He'll probably never need that extra $15 million, but what if he did? He can't be blamed for taking the money, and Boras did deliver for him. Albert Belle was making a pretty good living on the southside and was very comfortable with Jerry Manuel. He left for more money and more years due to an unusual clause in his contract. His health deteriorates, and his career ends. He gets the extra $30 million or so that he wouldn't have gotten had he chose to stay with the White Sox. That clause worked out unbelievably well for both the Sox and Belle. You can never blame the player for taking the money. Their career could be over tomorrow.
  14. I've got a Tivo and a digital RCN box which both delay the games a second or 2 on television, so listening to the radio broadcast while watching on TV is out of the question. Besides, I like to hear a few "he gones" during the game. And with all due respect to John Rooney,(whoever they hire will be a downgrade) if I am only able to listen to the game on the radio, I will listen no matter who the PBP man is, and no matter who is doing the color.
  15. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 04:34 PM) I said nothing of cancer - I don't know they guy. But I did absolutely say selfish and lazy, because of what I can see with my own eyes. He's lazy in that he doesn't run out plays hitting or in the outfield, and he's selfish in that he constantly complains, as if he has it tougher than everyone else. Given the strength of Ozzie's clubhouse, I see no reason to bring in someone like that. Like she said, for all the bad that is perceived about the guy, he obviously doesn't run balls out, and takes lazy and bad routes to balls in the field ( if you watch closely you will find out most major leaguers don't run balls out all that hard, including many White Sox) he is loved by teammates and fans of the teams he plays on. I truly believe if the talent KW had to give to get him and the amount of money they had to pay him weren't so high, he would be salivating over this guy.
  16. If selfish and lazy gets you 45 homers and 140 rbi, I'd take it anyday. Manny is not the cancer people think he is. KW may not want him, but it is only because of the amount he would have to pay for him and to him. Believe me, the entire American League is praying he gets shipped to the NL. He is nowhere near the cancer people make him out to be. He owns as many WS rings as anyone on the White Sox roster.
  17. IIRC Rooney had a shot at the Cardinals job a couple of years ago, but declined to pursue it because of his loyalty to the White Sox and he had a couple of years left on his contract. I don't know him at all, but if this really was his dream job, contratulations to him, the declining to pursue the job a couple of years ago would show what kind of character and class he really has.
  18. QUOTE(Fingish @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 02:31 PM) Come on, he isn't accused of murder, he's accused of attempted murder. And of course we would have to know more about the situation than it is possible for us to know right now. ... I stand corrected. I still wouldn't want anyone who attempted to kill someone on the White Sox roster. Maybe he will be exonerated. I still wouldn't touch him with a 10 ft. pole, and I really wanted this guy when Detroit made him available.
  19. Urbina was run out of Detroit for acting like a drunken asshole. Supposedly he had problems in Philadelphia, now he is facing a murder charge. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Its possible Urbina may be behind Venezuelan bars next baseball season. I don't understand how people can endorse trading for or signing a potential murderer, but have huge problems picking up guys who may have used steriods. Personally, I don't want any of them. I would have loved for the Sox to sign Urbina a couple of seasons ago, but he is pretty erratic both on and off the field at this point of his life. Don't try to compare him to Everett, or AJ or Jenks or anyone else the White Sox have reclimated. None of these guys have been accused of murder.
  20. For a bunch of people who aren't supposed to give a s*** about the White Sox, we are seeing a lot of Cub fans with a need to write letters to newpapers showing how totally clueless they are. It used to bother me, but over the past year or so their BS just makes me laugh. World Champion White Sox-you would think these 4 words would shut them up.
  21. I don't know what the French government can do at this point. Afterall, I was in Paris a few years ago when the unemployed went on strike looking for better benefits. They would stand in front of the entrances of the Louvre and other museums, and tourist destinations, not letting anyone in. They got their increased benefits.
  22. I still don't understand why the giant concern with Sweeney's power numbers. Robin Ventura was 2 years older than Sweeney when he played at Birmingham and hit a whopping 3 homers in over 450 at bats. The power will come with this guy, he has a lot of talent.
  23. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:27 PM) It all depends on when and who replaces Kevin Towers. I figured Alderson would have replaced him with himself by now.
  24. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:21 PM) I read where the Padres took their 3 year $21 million offer to him off the table. They were hoping he would take a paycut. I'm sure if all things were equal he would want to be on the west coast, but if the money is there the White Sox could offer him a realistic chance at the World Series. Pursuing him would be worth KW's time IMO even if he did say no thank you.
  25. Sign Giles and Konerko. Giles brings a little something the White Sox could use even though they won it all. He actually is disciplined at the plate. 119 walks vs. 64 strikeouts this season. 38 doubles. His homers were down but he should get a big bump with a move to USCF. The email I got from my rep mentioned unprecendented season ticket sales going on right now. Bust the budget a little bit. If the pitching is anywhere near what it was this year, adding Giles and getting better performances out of a few others would really make it hard for even ESPN not to give this team respect.
