QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 12:08 PM) Like it or not, the Sox have already blown their chance to think that it's ok to lose ground against the Twins when we're playing good teams. If they wanted to be in positions where they didn't need to sweep the Yankees, then they should have beaten the Twins. Or the Indians. Or the Orioles. Whoever. I agree that the bad losses hurt and may have really hampered the divisional hopes but if you think they are going to win every game the rest of the way I can assure you they will not but I will remain interested in how it all plays out even they lose one game of ground this weekend.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 11:20 AM) Really, we're past the point in the season where we can be fine with losing ground, no matter who we're playing. They need to beat he Indians while the Twins are playing the Rangers that is where they need to make up games. 4.5 Monday is doable....I would hope for 3.5 but the M's are terrible and he Twins miss Hernanadez. I expect nothing other than a Twins sweep and it is unrealistic to think the Sox will sweep the Yanks...the only hope is the M's defense can take away the dinks and dunks and that the M's can hit the ball. You can be disappointed that they can win two this weekend and lose ground but I will be fine with it.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) He has ten wins and has often gone 6 or 7 good innings for us. The ERA jumps when he or any pitcher has a bad game or two and gives up a lot of runs in just a couple innings. That has not happened to Freddie on any consistent basis so overall he has done a commendable job. Freddy is the kind of guy the yanks destroy like they do to MB. I expect nothing out of him tonight and hope Danks and Floyd bring their A game the rest ofthe weekend. 4.5 out Monday morning and I am fine.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 11:09 AM) It's official. Manny will not be going to the Rays. There was no chance of that if the Sox claimed him which they will.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 10:30 AM) Ah OK, no I agree with that concept, I just really like the docs because as I said earlier it shows all the "hidden" sources of income, meaning how big some of the TV contracts are and how much teams make off the jumbotron signs etc... Again, they don't have the White Sox so I am conveying these onto the White Sox, but it bolsters my argument that for a large market team like the White Sox, attendance is important, but not as important as smaller market teams. I would love to see the White Sox docs for many reasons, biggest being parking, I heard they have a great deal with that. You are 100% right about the franchise value, that was the crux of the final analysis on deadspin from a CPA, basically saying that's the "holy grail" of owning a franchise, teams just need some cash-flow (basically why the Cubs are screwed for another year or two) and can even take some loss, but the equity is the key, and few teams are in better position than JRs ownership group as far as that goes. The White Sox I believe will show what they are doing is what they say they are doing. They can take a loss for a year and JR can open the wallet to the tune of $4-5M as they can tap into their equity and take a loss from time to time. This is when KW asks for the extra $0.50. In the long term the Sox are not going to do this annually but will if need be. I believe the White Sox get 100% of parking as JR owns that land although I could be wrong.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 10:20 AM) I have a feeling they'll wait to Cliff Lee signs, make a strong last effort to re-sign Danks and if he doesn't move him to one of the teams that were in the Lee sweepstakes, even offering an extension window. (not saying Danks = Lee, but he would be a pretty nice 2nd place prize). If Danks can sign they'll move Jackson or Floyd I personally would go with the big five. Now that is a big five. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 06:54 AM) one year we might impact the financials one way or another (by capitalizing an item, thus delaying a chunk of the expense from hitting the P/L or by expensing the item, thus taking a 1 time hit which might allow future Net Income to apear higher). But one way or another the amount is still going to flow through the financials. And people are forgetting, teams can make a lot of money by seeing there franchise value increase significantly as well. You are exactly right. The key thing with these are not the P&L you can get these to look however you choose. The Balance Sheet is where everything lies. What is the debt on the books and what is the equity of the franchise those are goign to determine where you stand. A football bonus is an expense in year 1 for tax purposes yet it can be accounted for a couple of different ways and I am not even referring to the fictious salary cap. Eventually though it all comes through the P&L. Julio Cruz just came of the Sox books a couple of years back. He resided on teh Sox B/S for almost 15 years and hit their P&L annually. You can not really hide anything unless you have a holding company....or own the television/radio station that broadcasts your games. That is where you hide revenue from the team.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 10:13 AM) I wonder if GM Jizzo wishes he had a replacement stud like edwin jackson in rotation going into next year. Any chance of competing next year is gone as Dunn isn't going to hang around....that is a move that is making KW look like a genius as Jackson is doing much more than Dunn would do. If Peavy can get healthy that staff has MB or Peavy as the number 5 and can move Danks if he won't sign an extension......Sale is also in the mix. -
I'll take Jackson but I really think that pitchers can thrive with weaker stuff in the NL. I don't know why I just do.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 26, 2010 -> 11:06 AM) Here's the Big Ten division split: Division 1 Michigan Michigan State Iowa Nebraska Illinois Northwestern Division 2 Ohio State Penn State Wisconsin Minnesota Purdue Indiana Nice cakewalk that top division is. And it looks like OSU-Mich will no longer be played as the last regular season game. Way to completely punch tradition in the face guys. It will be played as the Big Ten championship instead. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2010 -> 08:32 AM) It's always possible that there may be issues between the Yankees and him that we don't know about as well. The Marlins did not seem fans. If I were the Cubs and he didn't sign a contract until November, I'd at least ask, and there might be a 1% chance of it happening. Can't hurt. I'll still have my mind blown if it's not Sandberg. They will do Girardi over Sandberg as the minion will eat that up. The Yankees will let Joe go, the cubs will nto hirre him away. The Ricketts do not have the cash to spend on the players they need to turn that thing around. They will not be any better next year so why would Joe voluntarily go for that? The Yanks may be leading him in that direction if they are not very high on him.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 08:45 PM) Ozzie needs to rest Rios a few games and see if he feels better. He's not really contributing much right now, and if he is banged up, rest him up for the last month. Put Lilli out there De Aza will be up in a week as well. -
Aren't all players on the 40 man on 9/1 eligible for the playoff roster? If so, sending a guy down at this point does not keep him off the playoff roster same as the DL.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) I don't see how that could be possible. Has he even hit waivers yet? We don't know. Not sure why the Dodgers would not do it yesterday. He is in Milwaukee I believe
-
Manny's motivation is a nice DH deal for next year.....oh and possibly facing the Yanks this weekend and Red Sox 7 times may be incentive enough..along with a playoff run. He also mashes at the Cell. If Rios is hurting, this is a no brainer.

I like Threets and for some reason I think the new roles for Pena and Linebrink will get them going. Remember Pena was going to be the closer and Linebrink main set up guy not too long ago. Time to earn that money.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2010 -> 09:44 PM) Cause what's the point of having Pierre if you're not going to let him steal to get into scoring position. You might as well have an OBP god like Thome being your leadoff hitter if you're not going to trust him. Now, if Pierre is on 2nd base and no outs, I'm fine with the bunt. Moving the guy to third to get him home on a ball in play is good. Needing a hit with only two rather than three opportunites is my problem. Unless the bunter is a bad hitter like the NL pitcher or kotsay. -

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Aug 24, 2010 -> 09:41 PM) Ozzie is arguably the worst manager in baseball from a decision making/tactician standpoint....really...is there anyone worse? That are employed? I like Guillen and think he does things very well but he does some simple things wrong. -

I heard that Kendall is batting .576 aginast Linebrink in his career. On Sunday with the man on third and two outs put Kendall on and let the .175 hitter beat you. No the .175 hitter was left handed that and the bunt are the only situational managing moves Guillen makes. The Twins may get swept and the Sox should have swept the Royals and should sweep the O's. They are in a pennant race and need to play like it. -

I want guillen gone simply because the bunting is not working -
So Lou walks out on the last two teams he has managed. Has this been brought up anywhere? It also seems the Rays did not need him at all and he took the cubs right into the crapper. I really think he should be known more for his failures than his successes. The M's collapse The Tampa debacle The cubs debacle. With the money spent on that team to not win a single playoff his embarrassing. The 91 World Series was a long time ago.
