QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 07:50 AM) There even used to be some major league clubs that did something like that. Not sure if any of them still do. Sox do it but you need to contribute a hearty sum to White Sox Charities.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 12:10 AM) Pujols just won the game in the bottom of the 15th. Cards came back twice, once in bottom of 9th and then 11th... The best the Cubs could hope for at the end of 4 at home with Astros while Cards had 4 at home with the Dodgers is to push in the standings I thought they were in LA...still impressive.

Cooper is turning into this as well. The Cardinals are always a threat and I get the feeling they may make another move by the end of the deadline. For the NL the cubs schedule gets harder from here on out.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:54 PM) we'd be getting 2 1st rounders back (ideally). Isn't Sherill in his early 30's his performanace may decrease before he reaches free agency..

Why Konerko is Dh'ing and Quentin wasn't on turf is beyond me. Actually Thome did not play any of the three games and they somehow felt Quentin should still have been playing on the turf...

QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) Gotta disagree, the Cubs have the best starting pitching depth in the NLC. They don't have a true ace but their 1-5 when healthy is very serviceable and is really what has carried them this year with their lack of hitting. The Cards have two very good SP, mediocre 3&4's and no #5. However the best 1-2 now belongs to Philly (Lee, Hamels). Z is Z Lilly, Dempster and haren are no longer sure thingsthe rest of the way Wells, Hart, etc. I am not sold on Carpenter, Wainwright and Pinerio are better right now than anythign the cub are putting out there except maybe Zambrano. Lohse could be rightthere but with his health I will put him in the Lilliy, Dempster group. Duncan and LaRussa are as good as they get.....Pinella seems to be happy getting paid.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) I'll be honest, the few times I've done that, it's been very relaxing. If they win, GREAT! I usually DVR the game then to watch what happened. If they lose, you're not as caught up in all the little things that happened during the game that lead to the result. I do this often with the cubs and Twins games. Instead of DVR though I read the Soxtalk game thread last night's was quite the read. -

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:12 PM) does it make it easier when you check the final score? if so, i might have to join you. yes because losing games on broken bats and D'wayne Wise ending the game as the tying run are never good to witness as well as Pods missing flyballs and Alexi Casilla and Carlos Gomez getting hits. -
Fields, Wise and Anderson for Kotsay, and Pie.......don't seem like good basball moves to me.

QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:38 PM) Mike Hampton = BAD I pointed out that any team in the NL Central except maybe St. Louis would have Colon as a 3 or a 4 at worst. Seems some teams just do not care to win.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) Francisco Liriano might miss his start tonight because of swelling in his left forearm per Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Crap they have seen Liriano before so I thought the Sox may have a shot..... -
Randy Williams up with the Big League Team

What happened to Jimmy Gobble? He wore it one game but seemed fine...I could be mistaken though. -
If Halladay goes to the Dodgers, the best two teams in baseball are now in the NL. If Myers and Lidge come back healthy and pitch close to last year the Phils are going ot be tough.

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:42 PM) Well, a lot of people think the Pena-Allen trade was an olive branch gift after the Quentin trade (like Iguchi after the Garcia trade), so maybe Qualls will come cheap as a make up for the Pena-Allen trade. The pieces that were given to AZ for Quentin and Richar were a couple of the pieces that got AZ Dan Haren. The Chris Young trade was a bad one for AZ.

Ramirez has done this all season if Guillen had not addressed it as of yet I have no problem with AJ doing it. AJ's baseball IQ is off the charts in one direction Ramirez' in the other.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:09 AM) Why isnt Becks an All-Star at 3B? 300 avg close to .400 OBP with developing power and a plus glove. Who cares if he is ACTUALLY elected to the game as long as he plays at an All Star level. At this point in time sub-par defense and low power numbers. He does not have a plus glove although he may in a few years.

QUOTE (wsgdf_2 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:59 AM) Levels of suckitude. The difference in having Anderson vs Wise on the roster is severely negligible. Anderson + Fields vs Wise + Kotsay? Who knows? But at least Anderson can finally be free of his White Sox shackles and can now unleash his baseball fury on the AL East. It also gets him the hell out of the way for the next round of prospects. Useless veterans are always better than prospects who may figure it out. Wise and Kotasy are not getting any better.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) They aren't? Most teams are thrilled to pick up guys to try out in AAA even if they just have a 1% chance of reaching their potential. Hell, we've got a couple in AAA for us (JVB, for example). I am talking about the dedication an organization will put into a guy to get them on track. I personally do not think a team will favor a "flyer" pick up over an equally qualified guy that has come up through their system. The Sox will stick with Getz longer than Nix if all things were equal IMHO.
-
Many players do not get multiple opportunites to succeed, they get one maybe two. Borchard got three. Brian Anderson will hang around for his athleticism and may turn into a Ryan Ludwick, who knows. Teams are not really looking to pick up a guy that has failed elsewhere. Once a player who has never failed before fails, I believe it takes a greater effort than many teams are willing to give to rebuild a guy. Tony LaRussa seems to do it better than anyone.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) I didn't know that Jenks, Linebrink, MacDougal, Konerko, and Gobble were young, white players out of the minors? I never said Ozzie is racist. There just seems to be a disconnect between him and our minor leaguers (who have just happened to be mostly white of late). I agree that it is not a race thing or even intentional. I think it is a communication and rapport thing. This probably happens more with hispanic players and white or black managers. You also need to remember that Cooper controls the pitchers so Guillen probably does not have anything to do with them. I think Guillen does not handle young players well for whatever reason. Mackowiak over Anderson has nothing to do with race as well as the Darin Erstad experience.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 09:47 PM) I would bet any amount of hypothetical money that he will not lose his job this season. Any amount. I agree. Just pointing out that his name will be coming up again. All you need to know about the White Sox is the fact Wise still gets a paycheck with no value and a guy that could play defense is gone. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 09:44 PM) Cardinals and Cubs are probably better than the Tigers/Sox/Twins I do not value the cubs as highly as you especially if Lilly is out longer than one month. They beat s***ty teams but can not beat good teams. -

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 09:42 PM) I will be glad to see when we get a fundamentally sound baseball team that knows how to play baseball. Ramirez and Getz were suppossed to be two of these guys.....makes you wonder how much the Sox actually look at the defensive potential of young players....Oh and yes and the only average defender in the organization was given away today for a guy that can barely walk but will somehow patrol CF.
