QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Feb 26, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) I'm not sure any of that is chronologically inconsistent. I took it that Jack had been wanting to get back to the island well before Locke showed up purely for his own benefit, because his life off the island sucked and back on the island he was king s***. However, he did not want to go along with Locke (who was his rival as Island king s***) on another journey of "faith and destiny," believing that he had to for the benefit of the rest. That conflict ("fate vs. probability") is what drove Locke and Jack apart on the Island and it still kept them apart up to that point. Jack only really comes around on this after he thinks Locke is dead and Mrs. Hawking reads him the riot act about having faith; what Ben said to Locke about Jack buying a ticket right away was typical Ben misdirection. Not sure about Sayid, but I'm sure being a badass is like riding a bike . . . I'll bet we learn he got blackmailed back into action. Maybe over something about his "murdered" wife? Anyway, that's my 2 cent take. Who the hell really knows with this show? My problem is Jack is all drugged up on the plane ride when he reads the obit. There is a big break in time from the Locke rerunion tour as we saw it yeaterday until the time he is actually dead/ the obit ran.

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 26, 2009 -> 11:38 AM) The show's been extremely predictable lately...but that might be a good thing. BTW, my wife just started watching the show this season. There's nothing more difficult than explaining storylines to someone with no foundation about what's taken place in previous seasons. Mine started watching half way through last season...........I agree with you 100%. Sometimes i think she is watching to annoy me but it is better to watch with someone that knows what is going on to see how deep this show really is which I think she enjoys. Also I am missing a time line thing here. Back last year Jack tells Kate after the alcohol and drugs had taken him over that he had been flying continously to try and crash. This happens after his conversation with Locke and before his death. Also the obit said Bentham died in N.Y. Locke was in L.A. Soemthing doesn't jive there or the final scene was weeks or months after the Locke meetings or Locke does not die in the hanging...... Also Sayid becomes a bad ass again after working for Homes for Hope when he busts Hurley out........ Something ain't working for me.

QUOTE (tommy @ Feb 25, 2009 -> 02:15 AM) I saw some footage on TV today, Contereras looks in shape. Bartolo isn't too bad, the usual him. I saw the same thing. Contreras looked skinny almost freaky as it looked nothing like him. I agree with Kalapse in that Colon looked like Colon. Seeing the replay of the Anderson catch against the Twins makes me wish Owens and Wise would just go away. If Lillebridge can play center fine but forcing Owens and Wise out makes me ill.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) He's below average. Sure he doesn't strike out 100 times a season but he still K's 2.5 times more often than he walks and sees a below average number of pitches per plate appearance. How much more valuable is an infield popout compared to a strikeout? And I still don't see how the Sox are downgrading when they haven't had a regular 3B since 2006. Here I go again going after Joe, the season really needs to start so we can get some real baseball talk going. Pop ups can now be lost in the ceiling.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 23, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) Sorry, you edited after I replied. And I dont think ANYONE could find a reason why Wise should make the team, I think you are trying to make my initial post something it wasnt. 31 26 I think age and ceiling is why you keep Anderson over Wise. Wise and Owens do the same thing, to have both on teh team is stupid.
-
Does anyone think that another team would pick up Owens if he throws out a sub-par spring? Wise as well.

QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Feb 21, 2009 -> 08:22 PM) We could have had Orlando Hudson AND Bob Abreu for about 10 million this year. Unload Dye for some prospects and you are significantly better. You could even eat a little of that salary to entice a team to trade for him. I just don't get it. I understand the Dye thing as the money was a huge issue. Anyone that really wanted Dye could have had Burell.
-
After taking a pass on Hudson, Getz better be lights out. I am really hoping Owens is not in the plans...,,I know I am wrong, really really wrong but I still hold out hope.
-
A one year deal for Hudson solves the White Sox problems as he is slotted into the lead-off spot and Anderson bats ninth and plays center. The defense is then air tight. I guess money is a huge obstacle for the White Sox this season. If KW was really going for it year in and year out, he signs Hudson for this price. Pretty sad state of affairs right now.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 20, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) Also, I am not sure if LASIK can address a stigmatism, but that can effect how well you see moving objects. The faster it is, the harder it would be to see well. I have a stigmatism and never knew that was the reason I sucked. Thanks.

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 05:21 PM) I'm not going to get into every single player, but here's how I think the 5 most recent American League champions' DH players' value are compared to Thome: Thome Thome Thome Thome = David Ortiz (Both useless, neither can play on the field anymore) Thome Am I reading correctly that both Jim Thome and David Ortiz are not as valuable in your mind than Marcus Thames. Ortiz and Thome could play first if they had but they don't have to so they do not play there. If Carlos Delgado can play first so could Ortiz and Thome.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 20, 2009 -> 09:49 AM) No he hasn't. Since 2000, Lou Piniella has led teams to 4 playoff appearances, 4 90+ win seasons (including a 116 win season), and got the lowly Devil Rays out of last place for the first time in their existence, who were an absolutely terrible team at the time. Meanwhile, Dusty Baker has made the playoffs 3 times, won 90 games only 3 times, and has had some pretty outstanding teams throughout that. The only thing you could argue is that Dusty Baker may be a better playoff manager than Lou. Lou Piniella is far superior to Dusty Baker. Dusty is one of the dumbest managers in the game. But his trip to the World Sereis and taking the cubs to the NLCS are greater accomplishments than Lou. Lou not winning a playoff game the last two seasons outweighs any positive in my mind. Not saying who is a better manager just that Dusty accomplished more in the last 10 years. I also think Lou's teams were better than Dusty's.

Does the NBA test for steroids? There are some guys in that league that explode over their careers. I am thinking of Jermaine O'Neal but he could have been big when he came into the league.

Burris tried to raise money for blago at behest of blago's brother
Harry Chappas replied to bmags's topic in The Filibuster
Listening to them talk about it on the radio here yesterday afternoon it kind of sounded like they were talking about Sarah Palin when they were talking about Burris in regard to every question they ask him he kind of gives a non-answer. He has no agenda and is simply taking up space in the senate. He is not benefitting the state of Illinois what so ever. -
Official 2008-2009 NBA Thread
Harry Chappas replied to The Beast's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I find the NBA as a waste of time. As was pointed out earlier it seems that every player is signed to a terrible contract. Guys are signed for millions to not play??????? It seems the whole league except for a couple of teams are writing off the this and next season to get to some dream free agents in the summer of 2010. The league really confuses me. -
The Reds rotation has a chance of being better than the cubs as I think Harang and Arroyo will bounce back and Cueto and Voloquez are going to be even better. If the Reds kids age nicely and cub veterans do not age nicely, the Reds could be a team to watch out for. Also I like Walt Jocketty and Dusty has accomplished more in the last ten years than Lou has.......

The last three outs are the hardest to get. Marmol gets people to swing at his slider out of the strike zone. Hitters tend to make a pitcher throw strikes in the 9th inning we shall see if Mr. Marbles is able to get this done.

ESPN to launch Chicago sports site
Harry Chappas replied to YASNY's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
That and the Bulls. The way ESPN promotes the s*** out of basketball and no coverage of hockey tells you the bias they have toward sports they cover. Mike and Mike will be at the Bass Masters Championships tomorrow. Need I say more. -
I am going into this year like I did two year's ago. While on paper I think the cubs are going to be good this year, I just think something is going to go wrong with them. They have zero organizational depth and are needing to get a cast off to back up first and third base. They should go after Crede..... If Lee or Ramirez go down they are screwed. Any injuries for that matter and they are in trouble. I think yo uwill see the drop off of older players as well and those back loaded contracts are going to come back to haunt the Ricketts family.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) B&B were talking about this yesterday. Basically the guy said Jenks used to show up hungover and fake injuries to get out of conditioning drills. Nothing earth shattering, we knew he had problems which is why the Angels let him go. He has been fine as a member of the Sox, thats all i am concerned about Makes me like Bobby even more now. How is this an SI story? Remember last year when Ozzie had the crack about Linebrink's migraine and how other guys call a hangover a migraine.
-
It really is funny how the injury plagued seasons of Posada and Matsui are non factors going into this season for the Yanks as well as Derek Lee and Soriano not aging at all. The media really just tells stories and lays out expectations that people want to hear, not the reality.

Paxson f'ed up when he put his eggs in the Deng/Gordon basket and is still afraid of moving any guy he drafts. Thomas may be good but I recall a few years ago when Deng was talked about as being a go to guy as well as Gordon. Paxson should give up whatever just to have the opportunity look at somethign different. It worked well for the Celtics. In regard to draft picks outside of Rose drafting highly has not working real well for the Bulls. -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 12:30 PM) No, not really, if anything he'll just hurt himself. Hopefully.
