March 12th Spring Baseball Game Discussion
Harry Chappas replied to Heads22's topic in 2008 Season in Review
Shelly Duncan with a hard unecessary slide in the Yanks / D-Rays game benches cleared. Joe Girardi seems like kind of a punk. Heath Phillips ejected in the first for the Yanks as well. Why is it that the Yankees and Red Sox are the only temas hat are allowed to play hard or however they choose. 1-0 Sox 2 on 1 out. -

I believe WSCR is carrying the game not sure who will be joining the ramblings of Farmio. -
Anyone watching Saturday, and I guess it may have been in the game thread, but Hawk was talking about Negron being the Jays 1st Rd pick in 2001 and he being 25 therefore he still must be considered a high ceiling guy. I understood his point he just seemed to be trying to convince everyone that the guy should be expected to perform in the next year of two. It made me chuckle.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 01:15 PM) Of course range is more important, but to say arm strength isn't important at all is neglecting a lot. In my book, the important elements of a CF 1) Ability to judge a ball off the bat (this will allow you get into the gaps and get as to those bloopers to short center) 2) A good throwing arm. A centerfielder can cut the ball off in the gap and could help cut down on players extending singles into doubles. 3) Speed is great but if you can judge a ball properly (Owens can not) you do not necessarily need the speed. Anderson is plenty fast enough to play center. Jim Edmonds and Tori Hunter are great at judging a ball that was why they were able to make as many highlight reel catches (it also allowed them to play normal catches into highlight reel catches). Did anyone ever wonder why Hunter was able to rob so many home runs , was it just luck???? Anderson is better than every other player on that roster at what it takes to play centerfield. I also think that with time he will be able to hold his own with the stick. The attitude problems are great as I am still trying to figure what he did other than party really good. Something Ozzie will condone enough. I am not sure what preparation he is unprepared for as he has always been in shape.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:08 PM) Its not a big in depth thing. Player fails GM has to take action to cover failing player If Anderson could play CF like a major leaguer in 2006, we wouldn't be talking about Erstad, Owens, Quinten, Swisher, and the rest of them. Brian Anderson's failure as a major league CF forced Kenny Williams into action. If you can't understand the logic there, there isn't much point in continuing. The flaw in your logic is KW has yet to get a CF. Of the players you mentioned Erstad was brought to be a fourth outfielder but his wondeful spring with that of the Prancer buried Anderson after Anderson won a job. Thus Erstad, the ultimate Grinder, plays just long enough to kill Anderson's season (19 AB in a month will do wonders for a young player) and render 2007 a disaster becasue of flawed KW logic on the player he brought in and handed a job to. Erstad played until the end May and did little to produce. Quintin is not a CF. Swisher is not a CF but he may be more equipped to do so than Mackowiak.... Owens can run and therefore is needed to get on base once a game and steal and maybe even score a run. The fact that he is no better a CF than Swisher is beside the point. If this team had a game plan that they truely believed in like they preach (pitching and defense) Anderson would have started last year and played just about every day in 2006. Anderson was no worse in 2006 than a majority of other rookies and did what was asked of him, played great defense. Which with statues in leftand right was really needed.

Wanna hear about a guy screwing up an organization. Jon Garland was a nice chip that had to be traded for a guy because the guy making $4M+ can't do his job. Why the bus has never even set it's sites on Uribe while the league minumum rookie is costing the Sox seasons is yet another example of a double standard on this team. Partying with the "honies" is worse than spending a winter going to court and having the team wonder if the SS would be in prison, the buffet line or starting. Thinking of last spring really ticks me off. Anderson is the best defensive CF and because he was about as productive as Juan Uribe considering the $$$ invested he is crushed with the bus. I will point out again that I not joking when I say this organization puts winter ball ahead of spring training (see Nick Masset in Mexico, the Venazuela uprising, Anderson winter 2006, 2007 & 2008, and Joey Cora v. Jerry Owens) and hte fact that last spring the regular hitters were gettting all of their at-bats and pitching in B games or at various Tucson Park District Leagues. 2005 lead this organaztion to beleive they are smarter then they really are.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 08:52 AM) Based on a mix of MSNBC and CNN delegate counts, Obama has roughly 1400 to Hillary 1243.5. So, that is a difference of 156.5 with 9 delegates in CO yet to be assigned and that was an Obama blowout. If Hillary wins 65% of the remaining PLEDGED delegates, she pulls to within .5 delegates. That's not 65% of the vote, it's 65% of the DELEGATES. THat's darn near impossible. If she "only" wins Penn by 10% of the delegates (83-68, aka net 15), she needs to win 73-75% of the remaining delegates to win. It just wont happen. She needs to back out now and let the party heal for a strong run in November. SHE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE PARTY. She can now set he sites on Govenor of NY.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 04:51 PM) Sorry, did who have his own show? hood or Goff? Here is the history of both: Goff has been for several years a producer for BandB. He occasionally hosts his own weekend show. Hood: He started as a producer for BandB. After a while he moved up to his own show late at night and then to a show right after "The Wise guys". I believe he was let go, or his contract wasn't renewed, by WSCR. He then left and works with ESPN1000. I dont know his role there since I rarely listen. He joked once with a Score producer to go work for SportingNews Radio because they payed better. I honestly thought hood would go there when he left the Score. Goof thanks. Hodd is good to.

GAME THREAD - 3/11/08, SOX @ TEX
Harry Chappas replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in 2008 Season in Review
QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) OK, let me rephrase this, I agree that BA is a no-brainer choice for CF at that point, I mean have the Sox discussed this at all publicly. I know you can't go off of what happens in ST, but BA was playing LF while Swisher was in CF. That was a head scratcher for me, even if it is ST They know Anderson is far and away a better CF than anyone on that roster. He has nothing to prove in ST defensively. What they did not know was how good Swisher is in CF thus giving him the time there. Same with that Bourgoise. Anderson has been jacked around after being handed the job. This organization really turned quickly on him after he strruggled and they watched Mackowiak make a fool of himself then handed the job to Erstad saying they need a number 2 hitter while Iguchi was still on the team. As far as I know anything bad about Anderson's personality has actually come from the team and not really external media unlike many players that are trashed. Anderson chirped about the honies and what not but that was cool until he failed. Think also of the pressure he was under replacing the icon that is Aaron Rowand NOTE I DID NOT USE GREEN. I'd like to see him get a shot as I think he could be a real asset. -
QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) I dont know, btu i did hear an off-air conversation here about the "upward mobility" of producers of various shows. Basically, no North producer has gone on to do anything while 2 BandB producers have gone on to be the sports director (cant think of the exact title).. and several have gone on to have their own shows. Being a North producer can be a dead end. He was MANY years ago. He got his own show that used to air after Norths afternoon show (the Wise Guys) and has since moved to ESPN 1000. I thinkyou are thinking of Jason Goff or Matt Abatacoloa. Both of them are GREAT producers and a lot of fun to be around. I think it is Jason Goff he is pretty good. Did he have his own show or was he on ESPN 1000 at one itme?

GAME THREAD - 3/11/08, SOX @ TEX
Harry Chappas replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in 2008 Season in Review
QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 04:09 PM) If Anderson continues on this roll and makes the team, do they put Swisher in LF and Anderson in CF? Would that be their best defensive option at that point? I pointed out in the Anderson thread that is the best option in my mind to compete this year. I like Anderson's all-around game much better then Owens and even Quintin at this time. -
QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) Anderson just hit a HR. He's really making a case for himself this spring. I still think their best team is Swisher leading off and playing left and Anderson in center. Neither Quintin or Owens has produced enough in their professional careers to make me believe otherwise. Darin Erstad really f***ed this team up.
-
What is funny about what you wrote is that she knows nothing about sports but is yet a producer on that show. I like Fred Hubner and will listen becasue of him. Why did the ND chick leave she was a drag to. Why does that show keep producers/personalities that know nothing about sports. Is Jonathan Hood the Boers and Bernstein producer. I think that is him. He works well with them although he doesn't chime in much.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 01:37 PM) I am posting a lot in this thread all the sudden, but I need to get caught up, I feel so behind! Another idea that I thought about after getting fully caught up. Granted, I don't know what kind of exposer Rousseau's crew had to radiation or EM, but I think they were not "infected" as much as they were "time shifted" like Desmond and Winkowski. I wonder, then, if Alex has been her constant this whole time on the island, and that is why she didn't end up like the rest of her crew. I think I am pretty hip to Lost but maybe I forgot this but was Alex born on the island or brought over with the boat. I think the sickness is related to the same thing Desmond suffered. It would jsut make sense to be and not have to be another whole minor plot deliniation. If Alex was born on the island she would be an exception to every other pregnant woman.....oh wait if she was pregnant before getting ot the island she'd be ok. Oh the rules. Also what is so funny about Ben asking if the rabbit had a number on it?
-
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 09:37 PM) The only reason I think it could be in question is Ben if clearly off the island in the flash forwards (working with Sayid). Granted, Ben has been on/off the island this whole time, but I just got the sense that him being in Germany was sort of a long term deal. But we pretty much know Locke never gets off, then there are people like Sawyer who really seem to not have any desire to leave, along with minor characters like Rose/Bernard. Unless the whole island goes to s***, I would have to believe there are still people there, and they told the "six" to never speak of them again. Sayid could have been back on the island when he met with Ben....... There are still more on the island that for some reason do not get off. You find out this season why do not get off. Next season entails whey they '6' want to get back. The final season entails what happens when they get there.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 09:42 AM) We would be lucky to get any player for Crede right now, I dont know how anyone is saying we should get a legit starter or prospect. He's not even the best 3B available on the market right now. Its ridiculous how much this board overrated Crede. We are going to be lucky to get a player that has even a slim chance at making the mlb roster. I am not a Joe Crede fan and hope to see Fields soon but right now Crede IF HEALTHY is better than Fields. After this season if Fields improves his defense at AAA than I take Fields. I also belive Inge is not a better option than Crede. Inge is 3 years older than Crede and that Inge contract is not really benefical to anyone.
-
QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 09:21 AM) Service time for free agency is determined by number of days on the major league roster. Crede keeping Josh in the minors would delay Josh's progress to eventual free agency. As well as arbitration. That was what I thought. I am really struggling to understand why Crede at third if healthy is a bad thing as compared to Fields. There are plenty of players that are rushed and fizzle. While I am not sure but how many players fail because they were kept in minors to long......I guess there is no answer to this as it is all speculative. A healthy Crede will be more productive this year then Fields.
-
If Crede is healthy he will stay here and play in front of Fields. I have heard media types most recently on the CSN Chicaog tribune show talk about releasing Crede and crap like that. Fields could use a little more work in the minors to tighten his game. How exactly would this hurt him? If he wins the AAA triple crown then maybe I was wrong. Also how does another year AAA affect his service time toward free agency? If we get Fields for an extra year while playing Crede this year I am all for it.

3/10/08 Sox vs. Mariners 3:05 CT

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) Owens reached base 4 times today... and stole 2 bases... in a split squad game... Jerry Owens is my boy!! I think it was B game. Those of the one's where Thome would lead off every inning and most of the regular players worked on their skills last year. If he can put up a .350 OBP that would be ideal. I know that is wishful thinking at this point. -

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Mar 7, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) Am I wrong or is Massett showing good stuff this spring? He has at least decent stuff same old song as other Sox pitchers just needs to do something with it. Liefer bad baserunning. BA K's seems to do this every game. 2-0 D'Backs although it sounded like a mix of hits and bad defense. -

Farmer seems to talk just to get noise in there. They sounded better than Farmer/Singleton. This is much better already. -
Not to turn this into anti-cub but Vegas hedges their numbers based on the fact that people will play them regardless of the true expected result. Same thing with a lot of west coast football especially USC as money is put on them regardless of the spread. In reality the Sox and cubs probably a lot closer than this.
