Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes
Harry Chappas replied to Kalapse's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 09:41 AM) For what it's worth, per Trib ... I like to hear that the Devil Rays were here, though I do not suspect that we will be getting what we all want. What if they were scouting Danks? -
North talking to fans if you want entertainment tune if. Bowen threw out 3 of 26 runners sounds like AJ. Tyler Burke hitting .211 Barrett caught Peavy in WBC. Pads announcer (Billy Ray Smith former LB?)_ talking to North. Pads think the guys they gave up both suck This sounds like a terribly bad cub trade. Stone brought up Linebrink...belief is Phil Nevin and GREG MADDUX helped in determining if Barett was worth the risk. Man the Pads guys are fired up for this. Dickie Thon turns 49 today BTW
-
Fred Huber ----- Bowen and ML OF Tyler Burke Good for Pads.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 09:20 AM) Now the rumor is it's for Bowen and a minor leaguer. Soto? and Bard or Bowen was the original rumor, then they moved to Linebrink.
-
Rumor Linebrink and Bowen. I like this trade for the cubs actually.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 08:53 AM) Bard's numbers are certainly down across the board this season, and Kevin Towers may be regretting that deal he gave him in the off-season (think it was a 3 year deal). So maybe Barrett for Bard and a fringe bullpen arm from the Pads? They're pretty full with relievers ATM. Is Bard 29?
-
SCORE is talking to Steve Stone; Here it is, Stone's friend talked to Barrett moments ago and he is leaving. Barrett is a FA. Speculation Stone says they had to be getting Bard or Bowen...
-
For a team struggling to get runs and get something going I find it surprising. They should be looking for Dye out there as well.

What is the Mets record in June? The White Sox hold the upper hand in the market. They need not sell. They potentially could have a ton of picks just by holding on to the pieces they have as none of the players will accept arbitration. Could they not get three additional number one's and three sandwich picks just by holding onto these players? Signability is an issue with all draft picks but you can gamble more with the picks as well as pick up a pick in the next draft if a guy does not sign. How'd Jon Adkins work out as well as the Jon Berry? Would the Mets give up Wright for Buerhle, probably not but that is where KW should start. Prospects can fizzle out. Proven starters are worth a-lot more especially one's that are signed for five years and are 28 years old. The abiltiy to sign Buerhle increases his value greatly.
-
If they are able to sign him long term I package Uribe and Buerhle and ask for Wright and Pelfrey. The other three guys would work if no long term deal is signed. The chances of them panning out are the same as Jeremy Reed, Scott Ruffcorn and Johnny Ruffin in my book. The 72 hour window to negotiate increases the ante greatly. The Mets have a worse record than the Sox in the month June BTW. You pit the Cardinals, Braves, Phils, Brewers, Astros and Mets as well as the NL teams out west against one another and drive up the price for any and all players in the White Sox organization.

Bullpens are a complete crapshoot. JC Romero was just released, wasn't he lites out for the Twins a couple of years back. Using the Twins and Oakland as examples, how much do they spend on their pen? They usually have really good one's. Outside of the closer, bullpens need to be constructed by flukie delivery one trick ponies that only face a couple of hitters every few days. I think that KW is finally determined to build his pen from within ala the Twins. You spend money on a rotation and a couple of big bats then build your fill in hitters and pen from within. The problem with the White Sox is that the farm system is not able to produce the .333 OBP lite hitters and 90-92 MPH fastball above average slider for strike pitchers. If the Sox were the Twins, Broadway, Floyd, and Gio would be in the pen and Owens, Fields and Valido would be setting up Dye, Konerko, and Thome. I still would like to know where the money will be spent next season if Buerhle, Dye, Iguchi and Crede are not back that is over $25M. I also think for the NL (Cards, Mets, and Braves) the likes of Contrearas and Vazquez would be worth picking up as their deals are not that bad. They are actually great deals if KW is willing to eat a couple mil in exchange for good prospects . Think Contrearas plus $2M a year for Reyes. If KW ate half of Contrearas deal what could he get...... Ichiro will not be on the market IMHO.
-
Didn't Contreras and Garland sign the same deals? Did Jose get 4 years? He signed after 2005, was this for 2006-2008? Was his an extension for 2007-2009? Was Garland's a pure three years for 2006-2008 becasue he was arbitration eligible? With Buerhle you have to remember that Konerko and Thome will be coming off the books or valued at a lower price after year three. This is where Rick Hahn is invloved something like this 2008 - $12M 2009 - $12M 2010 - $15M So far 3 yr $39M with other starters on the books also player can opt out of deal 2011 - $20M guaranteed if 500 innings reached in first three years - Team buy out $10M if 500 not reached - player opt out as well Guaranteed 4 yr $49M - Potentially $59M if healthy or Mark can walk 2012 - $20M guaranteed if 700 innings reached through four years - Team buy $10M is 700 not reached - player can opt out as well This deal guarantees Buerhle 4 yr $49M but allows him to leave or renegotiate after year three and lets the Sox out of the deal for $10M if he is done prior to the start of year 4.
-
Buerhle and Garland are guys you build a franchise around. We choose to do it with Contrearas and Vazquez because they were cheap. If our minor league system didn't suck so bad we would actaully have a bright future to build around Thome and Konerko. Last night was a prime example of what happens when your leadoff hitter gets on more than once a week. I would like to keep all of the starters and fill in the line-up with hitters getting 3-5M each.
-
Did I hear correctly that Lee got 6 games and the appeal will be heard this week? If he and Ramirez miss this weekend, it could be interesting.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 02:17 PM) Zambrano isn't going anywhere unless the Cubs go on a White Sox-esque slump. I was talking in the offseason. I think the Mets would trade for Buerhle now, let him walk, then sign Zambrano.
-
I think the Mets will go hard at Zambrano. Thus the Sox could get him back via FA and the nice players while the Mets make a run at the WS and get two draft picks.
-
He is eligible to come off the DL Saturday. Any word on where he is and what he is up to? Although I believe the season is a formality I'd still like to keep it respectable.

QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 12:29 PM) Doing the right thing isnt always the popular thing. But when we can look back in a few years and see how the pieces brought in as part of the deal have helped the orgranization it can be looked back as a major part of building our franchise, much like Cleveland can look at the Colon trade. Cleveland right now is 25th in attendance ahead of only KC, Pittsburgh, Washington, and the two Florida teams. They have arguably the best team in baesball and were projected so coming into the season. Where are all of the fans? If the pieces that are brought in end up being, Borchard, Anderson, Fields, Munoz or Felix Diaz, these trades will not work. This is a huge gamble if you think fans will simply show up and give KW the benefit of the doubt. You saw it during hte first Yankee sereis as the tickets prices were very high and the last Yankee series cemented it. You will see a ton of vacant seats this year and unless prices drop or spending is up the fanbase will alienate a rebuilding phase.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 10:51 AM) There is absolutely nothing written anywhere which would require the Sox to send along any of that $20 million they got from the Phillies in any deal sending out Jim. He's paid $14 mil total per year, it's just that 1/2 of that is covered by the money from the Phils. But since Jim proved he could come back from that injury, his value has gone right back up. The PR nightmare is that he costs them $7M and is very cheap in this day and age. I would think they could move him without giving the cash and use it elsewhere. Now image the PR nightmare if the FA market doesn't pan out and the money is not reinvested......
-
Do you want a PR nightmare....... 1) Why did Konerko resign for less money - Thome 2) Nicest (Personality and at the plate) player I think I have ever witnessed - Thome 3) $7M a year for real good numbers - Thome The White Sox were on the verge of overcoming the mass negativity generated from Reinsdorf being cheap, the White Flag and the strike. I know KW should tune this out and do what is best for the franchise but trading Thome or Buerhle would be suicide. Now if they traded Thome and kept the Phillie money and resigned Buerhle, maybe. I beleive a 90 loss season and a strtch drive by the cubs culd really hurt this team. Ichiro will not hit free agency if Seattle makes a run at the playoffs.
-
At some point over the next couple of weeks, sooner rather then later, the White Sox need to sit down with Buerhle and his agent and find what he wants. If he is traded and there is no talk of bringing him back that would be a poor organizational move. I understand it would be tampering but I am sure that happens all of the time. Buerhle is a bright enough guy to go to a team and come back next season knowing that the organization is better for loaning him to a contendor. Here is the problem with that, Buerhle's wife is due to have a baby at the end of July. If he is not consulted on the deal you can kiss him and any benefits good-bye for next season. If I am KW I take nothing less that highway robbery, explain the deal to Buerhle, him and guarantee that they will make a serious run at him in the offseason and lay out the long term plans of hte organization. I doubt any of this happens and he is moved for two AA pitchers and journeyman 4th outfielder. All of which make for good AAP's and nothing more.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 03:01 PM) Wow, I think we're actually guaranteed to make it through our full lineup 4 times. Does anyone else think it's been a while since that happened? By one hitter. Owens "still not running well" thanks Ed how about the hitting. Phils are not that good at all. 3-15- in last 18.......... Well at least all of the teams are under .500 0-18 would have been hard to take. -

The average of the 9 hitters in the Gameday line-up right now is .197 (Logan at .000). This team sucks. -

1 hit in the last 5 innings. AJ swings first or second pitch when we need runners. Sorry to those that think he is worth something but he is quickly becoming Uribe Jr. For he to think that he should not be platooned is stupid .238 average and .287 OBP...also his defense is non-existant as any ball in the dirt is a WP and runners steal at will.
