  1. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 10:32 AM) can somebody sticky the reasons why Griffey is not coming to the Sox so that we don't have to keep explaining it? I think my post explained why we won't get him and why the Cinninnati ownership would've blocked the deal. I did not see this here and thought it was insightful as to why we did not get him. Sorry if I wasted your precious time from railing against someone.
  2. Ok this may be the wrong place and if addressed somewhere I aplolgize but the following sources have stated over the past week that Rowand would be displaced by Griffey should he be brought in. Harrelson and DJ in response to an e-mail Bruce Levine Some nit wit from Sporting News Radio on the CLTV Round Table Sunday night ESPN dolts Many folks on this site. Should by some miracle of god we did get him he would fill the role Everett had when Thomas was here and Everett would fill the role Thomas had when Thomas was here with less at-bats then Frank. The OF'ers need a day off here or there and Timo is an embarrassment. Another injury and we are done, we will not play above .400 ball and out pitchers will be toast from the stress of having to throw a shut out everyday. In the game last night they talked of how NY was going to get him. If the cash is right they will get him. Although I did hear on the cub radio braodcast, first insightful thing ever, that the Reds were about to be sold and they did not want to risk the devaluation of the franchise by giving up Griffey. This may be who we are fighting for and why if the Yanks will eat the $$$ the will get him. I actually think Pods is an ideal DH as he can play everyday and run without tiring. This team is looking tired offensivly and there is nowhere to turn. Where is Pablo OZuna, I thought he was a fine spark but we haven't seen him in weeks again.
  3. Was there about 96K for the series? Should be at least 100K this weekend. Yanks already have 107K. The Twins for some reason are not a draw. How close are we to 2.5?????
  4. This was what Bill Wirtz had been saying and forcing his team to do all along. Will they win, who knows but I'll take what we may be looking at for the next four years and understand much better what the plan was the last three to five years.
  5. QUOTE(Pale Hose Jon @ Aug 5, 2005 -> 10:28 AM) For the hockey experts out there: What happens with Tibult, what can we expect in return for him? Traded for big bad contract worth a risk??? Tampa need a goalie?
  6. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 5, 2005 -> 09:22 AM) There is no reason that Tallon shouldnt offer St Louis a contract. He puts the biscuit in the basket, and we could use that. He needs a good center and guys that can keep him free. He had that with Vincent, we do not we have that.
  7. So I get to listen to ESPN for 5 minutes on my drive to the train, I am indeed that lazy. In this time Gammons is on. I suppose the conversation started with how much of an impact, seeing as they played for Boston, Willamson and Nomar will have and the cub run to the Series starts today. Well in the time I listed he talked about how Shilling will start and Foulke will be saving games by September, ok fine. Then he goes into a dissertation about how the Manny thing was good for the team (ya right). Clement looked great yesterday (Don't know the details but the score was 11-9). Wells is their best starter and they will be good with Wakefield. I guess he has given up on Wade Miller. Here is the topper after this crap he goes on about how Theo and Cashman have realized that they need their prospects to produce and then he listed all (I think there were 5) pitchers that can add to Boston in September or immediatly next year. This pissed me off, not really sure why, it is nothing new.
  8. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 06:28 PM) The problem is we don't have many relievers who can get lefties out. Cotts is better against righties. Viz has been hammered against lefties (which was supposed to be his strength). Jenks has been wonderful against lefties, but they're not going to bring him in just to get 1 lefty out. They need to give Marte work to find his groove again against lefties, and there's gonna be some speed bumps along the way, but the potential reward is there for everyone to see. A healthy and dominant Marte equals one of the top 5 LH relievers in baseball. We haven't seen this pitcher in almost two years. I think Ozzie is trying to get the unknowns (Blum, Viz, Marte) situations where he can see how they perform. Why he isn't doing this with Jenks is beyond me. Why he wasn't asked about his use of the bullpen is another mystery. Marte was lucky to get out of the 7th and it cost him in the 8th. I'd rather have seen Viz or Jenks start the 8th but yesterday was diffenitly odd. I think Ozzie thought we would score in th 6th or 7th on their bullpen and make it easier at the end with a bigger lead.
  9. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:29 PM) His contract runs through 2025, no thanks. Come on with Julio Cruz off the books (well at least in 2001) we have done it before. Look at the guys on the bench.... All you are mortgaging is the long-term cash you would give to Konerko or Thomas. He would be a splash.
  10. After this year chances are Frank and Konerko are off of the books at their current prices. If you take on the salary he could had realitvely easily I would assume. Our bench Widger,Ozuna, Gload, Harris, Perez is embarrasing. McCarthy, Harris and Vizcaino?????? After realizing Frank isn't coming back, we really need a bat if not two. Widger, Harris and Gload are not major league hitters and I am not too sure about Perez or Ozuna either.
  11. After reading this I can not understand why this is a bad point? I believe there should be a four/five (Konerko) way platoon to get Ozuna more at-bats. Ozuna should be at second rather than Willie Worthless. Uribe showed last year he can play all three infield postions flawlessly. What exactly has Uribe done to warrant a guaranteed spot????? Upgrading from Valentin was not that hard. Funny how the chemistry suffered with his loss. We lost more games with Valentine's horses*** defense and K's then we won from his clutch hits.
  12. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 09:55 AM) I guess he has a huge problem with Sandberg making the hall. I have never been told what this problem is. I guess he thinks he is the be-all end-all in second basemen, and noone after him should be inducted. Did he go when the veterans committee put in the guy from Pittsburgh?
  13. QUOTE(forrestg @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 09:57 AM) Maybe you don't know but the sox almost moved there because money for US Cellular wasn't being appropriated. I was 60% sure they were going. As far as trades we need a couple of good left-handed bats and in the lineup Huff would be great. As far as pitching I would really think twice about giving up McCarthy if he's pitching well. In the playoffs we can get by with 4sp 3 are superb and the other 2 can be brilliant. Marte, go ahead and trade him but leave Jenks,Cotts,Hermanson, and Politte alone. I knew that, they were going to be the St. Pete something, I have the t-shirt. The stadium down there was built for a team of some sort. It was their leverage.
  14. Once a guy leaves the Sox, unless I dine with him regularly or my kids go to school with him, I could care less what he does. Gary Majewski took the loss, I really could care less.
  15. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 09:35 AM) ok 1.) i agree on keeping salary down. 2.) i disagree taht attendance does not matter. it does matter, becuase it will bring them more money. if they can raise attendence by not spending more on salaries of players then WHY NOT DO IT?????!?!?! Because you can't control attendance, see White Sox and Miami. The state of Florida is the state of Florida. Miami tried winning and it didn't work. You can watch about 15 spring training teams when the weather is nice. Now when it is 100 where do you want to go, the ocean or to see the D-Rays?? Sports in Florida are different than Chicago. 75 and sunny and the ballpark. -10 and snowing indoor hockey. 75 and sunny (hockey???) 110 baseball The risk of building a new stadium and spending money (to compete agaisnt NY and Boston) is not worth it. I really think they are in a no win situation and will be dicks about it, I thought that was the point of not trading for spite.
  16. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 09:27 AM) haha im not saying tehy should invest. thats why im advocating them trading huff. hes 7.5 million dollars spent by ownership. if they can cut that spending out, they will make more money. AND additionally why not get players that can help you contribute in teh future. if they can contribute at 300,000 dollars, maybe they will help to bring in some revenue, which also increases their pay check. i completely agree with you that they could win 90 games make 200 million, or win 60 and make 300 million that they would choose to win 60 and make 300. i think, you must be under the assumption that i dont agree with you on that, but i do. alls im sayin is that if they can win 56 without huff, then they make 207.5 million (with the extra money coming from the money they save on huffs contract). and maybe, just maybe, the prospect tehy get turns into a player like huff and that brings them back to 60 wins. maybe a few more fans will start to show up then, and the team is spending less, and maybe that 207.5 with 56 wins jumps to 209.5 with 60 wins. i agree tehy dont really care about teh wins, but if the wins bring in money, without them having to spend money, then they do care How do you know what they care about? Sorry but I think Steff really does know what they are like and how they are run and it is apparent on how they are run on a day-to-day basis. Lamar and the owner are good friends he ain't going nowhere and does not need to do anything but keep the salary down. Wins, losses and attendance do not matter. Lamar is a fool and there is no recourse against, I guess this makes him brilliant.
  17. It took two/three years to GET someone to take the Nationals now we are talking about potential suitors for another team, come on. The two Florida teams have to be tops on the list of teams to dissolve especially if there is no stadium in Miami. That team should not have to ask for anything after two titles in the last 7 or so years. Jenks is the "flavor" becuase he brings PURE talent something that lacks in our bullpen. I want a guy to come in with men on second and third and one out in a game and shut a hitter down. Not hope to shut him down but in the end the hitter can inside out a ball in the air to the outfield on a 92 MPH fastball. Jenks keeps hitters off balance because you have to react to the pitch and can not try to have a strategy at the plate. If you look fastball away and get a good hook near the plate you are defensless. With hermanson if you look fastball away and get a splitter you can still put it in play. Wagner is bettter than Jenks, Baez is iffy and nowhere near the potential even this year.
  18. The Trib gave Farmer and Rooney credit and then stated something about how the cub broadcasters could be so low (they used the term surprising or shcoking or something like that). They (Trib and cub fans) really are full of themselves go to Around the Horn to get the rest of my cub rant.
  19. Foxx Raffy if he is 50/50 Frank Thomas is out. The amazing thing about baseball is that in its history Yankee (or NY in general) players are so grossly overrated it is disgusting. Yogi Berra v. Mel Ott for instance (not sure about the stats but they are close) Whitey Ford Hell even Joe Dimaggio. His hit streak is nice but in the grand scheme of things what did it get him (what was his average during the streak). I'll take 3 2 for 4's and an 0 for 2 over three 1 for 4's and a 2 for 4. Hank Aaron was probably the greatest (behind Ruth) and you would think he couldn't hold Willie Mays jock with accolades draped on Mays (not saying he wasn't great). The media overhypes flair, pizzazz (not Piazza) and locale rather than real talent and achievement. I bet Jorge Posada is more of a HOF lock then Frank Thomas, christ there were stories on if Mattingly should make it. Harold Baines will pass on the balloting like Andre Dawson, too bad he didn't play longer with the cub he (Dawson) would've been a first ballot guy. With the Trib coverage of Sandberg this week (back page every day) did they do this for Fisk???You would have think he saved 10,000 children in a burning orphanage and then found them all nice warm homes. Enough of my rant, off to the USA radio poll to post the Trib comments on this, they are precious.
  20. Didn't the same thing happen do Danny Wright and he didn't even leave the game???
  21. Let's see Houston just swept them and beat Pedro, well the Mets when Pedro pitched. Oh, Houston is also 9-1 in their last 10. Although I think Wade should think about a deal he won't. The white flag deal is very similar to this in that although they are only 3 1/2 games (or something) back the fans, as they should, still believe the Phils have a shot. Their problem is that their division is just tough enough for them to make it hard.
  22. QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 03:50 PM) Doug Jones.. where the heck is he these days..? He will be productive for us by the end of the year. How Wille Harris (BA about .220) and Vizcaino stick arund and he is gone is a complete mystery.
  23. I did not see this but I remember when Rickey Henderson did something similar to this to the catcher's wrist and he dropped the ball. I thought it was a BS move but everyone in baseball I believe thought it was hard but clean. Do anything to get the run in....... Was it similar to this????
  24. He could teach Uribe how to wait for a strike and play smartball. Maybe he'll be good for the Latino players as well. No thanks we need smart hitters that can handle the bat not stats guys.
