QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 10:55 AM) I voted in the Feb primary in Illinois. I showed my ID (heh), and they said "Dem or Rep?" Those were the two options. They handed me the Dem ballot, and I voted. You had more options than that. THAT is honest, genuine disenfranchisement. http://chicago.about.com/od/governmentandm...rimaryGreen.htm http://samizdatblog.blogspot.com/2008/02/i...gularities.html This sounds identical to Illinois to me as long as you can change your affiliation at the polling place, like in Illinois. Go in, ask for the appropriate ballot, vote, go home. If you don't ask for the appropriate ballot, you can't vote in that party's primary. I really don't see the issue.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 11:41 AM) No it doesn't. In illinois for the primary, you get one or the other - a Dem slate or a GOP slate. I know I picked up an independent one in 2006. The only thing on it was a library or school tax proposition. There was also a Green Party ballot. Either way, I still don't see the problem. Pick up a Dem. card, a Rep. Card, or an Ind. Card. If you don't pick up a Dem. card, you don't get to choose the Dem. candidate. Same for the Rep. side. How does this disenfranchise anyone?
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) Well forget about Obama for the moment... that glitch will confuse and disenfranchise people who aren't affiliated with a party, and that's a load of crap. I don't see the problem. It's a primary, not a general election. If you don't pick up a Dem. ticket, why should you be voting on the Dem. candidate for President? It works that way in Illinois.

QUOTE (ChiSox35 @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 09:47 AM) i would agree if i had a radio but i'll be following on lameday. Sign up for MLB radio if your work lets you stream media. It was only $14 or $15 for the whole year. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 08:32 AM) It's the equivalent of putting a band-aid over your chest when you're having a heart attack, exactly. Ad campaigns like that are pretty effective too, because most people don't realize it's just a band-aid, and it's not going to help anything, so you can effectively portray someone as favoring oil companies over the people and they usually take it at face value just because they need something to be mad at. Its more like the equivalent of rubbing salt in the wound. With the way the economics work out, we end up paying roughly the same price after a little while. But, instead of having .30 per gallon (or whatever it is) go to the roads and infrastructure, it goes to Gas Company XYZ. These types of economic proposals show the politicians who either a) understand very little about economics or B ), don't care that their policies are horrible as long as people buy into them.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 11:50 PM) Obama basically risked his political ass to try and take the high road not disowning Wright, partially succeeding, and Wright repaid him by acting a fool in a completely arbitrary manner and having his ego undermine Obama's campaign at a critical moment and threatened to torpedo the whole thing. So Obama finally threw him under the bus as if to say "fine, f*** it, I really don't want to deal with this anymore." Seems pretty simple to me, it's like Wright doesn't even care that he's damaging Obama right now by popping off at the mouth, however right he believes he is to defend himself. There's conspiracy-theory rumors floating around that the Clintons are paying/ encouraging Wright to continue to spout off.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 11:36 PM) Yep, and it will get better. Swisher, Cabrera, Thome, Konerko, and Uribe will all end up with considerably higher batting averages, than they have now. You'll probably see AJ, Dye, and Quentin's collectively come down a bit. The Sox won't hit .248 for the season. WE ARE 25 GAMES INTO THE SEASON. The Sox have and will have one of the top offenses in the AL. Gavin Floyd will not maintain a 3.16 ERA. The Baltimore Orioles will not win the AL East. WE ARE 25 GAMES INTO THE SEASON. Utley will not hit 50 home runs. There is no valid argument that Swisher's lower than expected slugging percentage is CAUSED BY his hitting leadoff THROUGH 89 AT BATS. There is a good bet, however, that he will have one of his best seasons yet, going from a terrible hitters park to a great hitters park. Players will get in slumps for periods of time. Players will get out of slumps. David Ortiz will not finish the year with a .611 OPS. During a 25 game stretch any given player's numbers may be brutal or they may be amazing. Any player from Vlad to Uribe. We don't look at that. We look at their season totals. And some people get all out of whack staring at those totals even if the season is 17 games old. Again, 2007 says hello. And the second half of 2006. And a lot of 2005. There is no guarantee that they will just start mashing the ball. And while 25 games may sound like a small sample size, its about 15% of a season.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 09:15 PM) I think we've been hitting pretty well, but just not at the right time. We're getting lead-off men on, whether with singles or with walks, but we can't do anythign after that. I don't remember the last time we hit a double. We're near the bottom of the league in Avg. We're not hitting particularly well.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 09:14 PM) Cabrera might have had a shot at Punto going to 3rd. It would have been close. You go for the out there. If you don't make the play, a sacrifice fly scores a run instead of ending the inning.
-
Woo! Another solo HR! This is what I was talking about when I said OBP is nice, but you still need to hit for a decent AVG. This offense has been anemic lately. They've been doing it for years. Every crap pitcher that shuts down the Sox with a mediocre off-speed pitch is one of the best arms in the game.
-
I've missed most of this game. How many pitches have the Sox struck out on that were in the dirt? How many that were way out of the zone?

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 07:48 PM) Well, that's actually the substance of the linked article – that the hallucinogenic effects are much overhyped and it's really just good old high-octane, pink-elephant drunkennses. They might be over-hyped, I dunno, I never tried. I was just saying that they don't say its a hallucinogen because it is a high-proof liquor. There's something else about the fermenting/ distilling process that is supposed to give it that quality.

QUOTE (The Beast @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 05:33 PM) No, IMO, it's stupid because Marijuana is illegal. But you know, that won't hold up with people. What? A debate about whether or not pot should be legal is stupid because pot is illegal? Are you sure you're sober? QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 04:40 PM) Which is the only purpose of Tylenol Are you including people who are, for example, high and fall off a balcony during Spring break? What about tylenol 3 (the stuff with codine) or any other prescription pain killer? Plenty of people take those to get high/ stoned/ whatever.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) Umm, it makes people hallucinate because it's 140 proof? 151 does nothing to me but get me plastered, but this s*** is supposed to make me trip? Please. I've had absinthe once, and while it does taste good (the sugar/water approach), it did nothing to me. I was extremely disappointed. Also, a note on the taste...I hate licorice but I enjoyed the taste of Absinthe. Uh, no. Its not supposed to make you hallucinate because its 140 proof.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) I've lived in Lemont for six years now and have never experienced any foul odors. Maybe its where I liv Also, you would be surprised at how much Citgo does for Lemont, i.e. they just donated $500,000 for a new township office, and they just co-sponsored a motor-oil recycling event a week and a half ago. You have to be driving on New Ave. to smell it, but man does it stink. Sorta like rotten eggs. I'm sure Lemont gets TONS of tax money from those two plants as well. I don't know that I'd necessarily oppose it myself, I was just saying that I understand where the NIMBY mentality comes from when it comes to places like these. I know some of the refinery cities in Texas (Port Arthur, in particular) are very seriously polluted. On a side note, I've always found it odd that the Citgo station directly across the street from the refinery usually has some of the higher prices in the area. You'd think they'd be able to sell a little cheaper due to zero transportation costs.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 07:28 AM) That's the fun part... Everyone seems to want more refining capacity, but no one wants it built next to them. The NIMBY factor is huge here. Not to mention with all of the emphasis towards getting off of oil, why would any company look at putting up billions of dollars into technology that everyone is talking about phasing out? well, I understand the NIMBY factor. Just drive down New Avenue in Lockport/ Lemont, IL. The Texaco refinery that closed in 1982 and takes up a few hundred acres along the Des Plaines river was just finally cleaned up in the last few years. And the land is still only usable for industrial purposes. A little further down the road is the ComEd coal-fired power plant and a Citgo refinery. My parents often have an oily film on their pool (they're a little down-wind). There are risks of explosion (I think the Texaco refinery had a major explosion, and the Citgo refinery had a minor explosion a few years ago.) They usually smell awful at night.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 07:56 AM) We're in the process of looking for a house too. I'd be either working from home or working downtown, so all I need is to be close to Metra, but the wife works in Northbrook. We had cast a pretty wide net for houses previously, but now, we are narrowing the circle quite a bit, in part becuase of gas prices. The balance is still out of whack, though. I work in Des Plaines and live in Woodridge right now. If I wanted to get close to work (

They had every opportunity in the world to win this game. The offense couldn't get anything done with RISP. This reminds me of that loss last week to the Yankees. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) Not at all. At least I'm realistic. For someone to say Uribe makes Ozzie look like ARod offensively is beyond blind. If one really believes that, it shows they would either never give Uribe a fair shake or have no idea about baseball. BTW, the Cuban missle is a huge improvement. He's an on-base machine. They are both horrible, some-of-the-worst-in-the-majors hitters. Happy? -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 07:15 AM) I always thought the Sox hit better as the temprature rises. But, I have to agree with you, after last year, I don't buy that noise anymore. They generally do, but after hearing "Don't worry, its April, its still cold" followed by "Don't worry, its May, its still cold" followed by "Don't worry, its only June, they HAVE to break out of it" last year, I can't hold that kind of hope.
