QUOTE (RME JICO @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 07:43 AM) Thats funny that you say that when we scored 4 of our 6 runs yesterday without hits. 3 on Fielder's choice, and 1 on HBP. So we scored one run by walking it in. My point was that you need some sort of balance. Having a team with a .450 OBP but a .100 AVG will probably result in a pretty crappy offense since you'll be completely station-to-station. QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 08:10 AM) True, but it makes it more likely that someone will be on base when someone does get a hit. It also can tire and frustrate an opponent's starter and allow the Sox to face more of the other teams bullpen. It also increases the number of pitches the team sees making it more likely to get a hit late in the game. I'm very happy with the team's focus on OBP. The average will improve and the power numbers will rise with the summer heat. This team could become an offensive force. After last year, I don't believe in the "the average will come up, it HAS to" line.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 27, 2008 -> 09:23 PM) I'm heartened to see that in this 'slowing economy' that so many young people have enough disposable income to get trashed on beer at a Soxgame. For me to drink enough beer at the Cell to get wasted I would need to take out a loan. Problem - Beer is expensive in the park ($19.50 for three beers!) Solution - A 24 pack is cheap and easy to drink before the game in the parking lot

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 01:40 AM) batting average doesn't mean nothing... but it's close. OBP is great, but its hard to walk in runs.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 06:38 AM) Well if it isnt pull-able, then he wouldnt be pulling it, now would he? He'd try to, and it'd end up as a weak pop-up.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) Considering its an elective foreign language I see no harm in using it as a tool to help the students learn. However, if it was something like a school trying to make it be recited in both languages to appease bilingual students thats another story. I have no problem with asking students to do it, but I'm pretty sure its been ruled unconstitutional to require them to do so.

Paintballing ninjas must be terrorists pt. III

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 12:31 PM) Or you can let them blow it up and have all of the evidence you need! Its a no win situation. Right, that was their point. You can't just let them go on and on right up until the point of execution, because you can never be 100% sure when that is and if you miss it, you're going to be in for a lot of pain. -

Heard in an interesting take on this on NPR a few weeks ago. Basically, the earlier they catch plots like this, the harder it is to prove anything in court. So early detection and prevention is good in some sense, but it lets the plotters walk. -
Jehovah's Witnesses are not allowed to pledge to any flag due to their religious beliefs. Is it fair to force them to violate their religious beliefs for a grade?
-
There's nothing wrong with saying the pledge in another language, but I don't agree with forcing students to say it and grading them on it.

What happened to the offensive approach of the first couple of weeks? They look terrible out there. -
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) Oh, some are capable, of course. There are plenty of bright American students. However, overall, we do not do a good enough job in math and science (which is key to engineering) in our schools which puts us at a disadvantage in the future economy. That is all I am trying to say. I know it's not a popular thing to say, but it is indeed true. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...7120400730.html Maybe. I'm just going off of anecdotal evidence here. Our public school system is pretty abysmal.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) Yep, thats where I graduated from. but hey, i don't know what i'm talking about. this guy does though. http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/200...ent-drain_x.htm I think what you're saying and the reality are a bit of a disconnect, though. We used to get ALL of the top students from around the world. We're not any more. Of course that means programs will get weaker. That doesn't mean that Americans are incapable of the work.
-
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 02:39 PM) Our public education systems sucks, until you get into higher education. but our top engineering schools (and even the mid level or lower level ones) need to stack their student rosters with foreign students, cause American students can't do the research or handle the complex work. Could have fooled me. There were plenty of American students at U of I who excelled in various engineering programs.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 09:25 AM) Looking at the remaining contests, if she loses NC and IN, she'd need to do very well in the remaining group AND get a whopping 75% or so of the remaining superdelegates, in order to win. Do you think that 75% of those remaining party elders are going to go against the will of the people, as expressed in the delegate count, and the popular vote? No. I don't think she will win it, but she won't drop out, either. She'll drag it on and continue to beat up on Obama so that he's nice and soft by the time McCain and all the "independent" Republican groups get a hold of him.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 08:12 AM) People b****ing about him like he blew yesterday's game is beyond ridiculous. He had a good game. Getting hits off Joba Chamberlain is not easy. Carlos Quentin whiffed with the bases loaded and 1 out, and not a peep. Uribe ties the game up earlier, and pops up with 2 out, and its bash Uribe time once again. I wonder who is going to be the whipping boy when Uribe is gone. Will you go back to Greg Walker? Wasn't it his fault according to you when certain players don't hit? That's all fine and good, but it doesn't explain Uribe's overall terrible, bottom-of-the-league hitting.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 08:59 AM) I dont agree with him doing this, but two can play at this game Ms. Clinton... Will Obama Campaign Start Hitting Hillary Over Whitewater And Cattle Futures? Let's forget about Obama dubious connections that were not illegal (but stupid) and look at how the Clinton's committed several crimes. And then Obama becomes "just another politician." This will not end well for Democrats.

QUOTE (NUKE @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 07:03 AM) I don't have research to back me up on this but I will bet you my last nickel that blind people get hit by vehicles far less than idiots on cell phones or people who just never learned to look both ways before they cross the street. So what? The law isn't meant to address those idiots. Kids down in Champaign would get hit by freakin' buses (you know, obnoxiously loud turbocharged diesel engines) because they were busy texting and listening to their iPod. This lawmaker's proposal wasn't about those people.
-
QUOTE (NUKE @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 06:56 AM) You mean PC collides with nanny state. I think we should introduce a bill that says if you get hit by a car because you weren't looking where you were going or dart into traffic then you should pay the repair cost to the car. It's about blind people.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 07:14 AM) She needs IN. If she loses NC (VERY likely) and IN there is absolutely no way for her to win. But if she wins IN, she can fight t win the over all popular vote. Even if she loses NC and IN she can still win the election on the supers. This thing will drag on for as long as possible.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 01:50 PM) By solar water heaters, do you mean the ones where you run the pipe on the roof with heat-soaking coating on it? Or something else? Also, one thing that is said to work pretty darn well now are those no-tank water heaters. Just uses electricity to heat the water as it heads to the location in the pipes. I can't remember the specifics, but I know my parents were going to have to do significant plumbing work when they looked into one of the Bosch units a few years ago. Either their main inlet or main outlet pipes weren't the right size. Edit: Should we move these posts out of the GOP thread and into the energy thread?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) I hope the local Democrats running for office in that district win because of this. Why would that be the case? They'll still vote R in the general.

How much of the noise that you hear coming down the road is due to the engine, though? Sure, if I've got my foot to the floor it'll be loud, but most of the noise is from the tires and air. Manufacturers have gone to great lengths to make the engines in most cars as quiet as possible.

Sorry, I didn't say I already have Comcast cable and signed up for the Digital Starter and HdTV packages yesterday. I didn't have any time to play around with it, though. Will I need a different package than this?

Frank Thomas Released By The Blue Jays/signed by the A's
StrangeSox replied to BlizzardOfOzzie's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 11:36 AM) Considering Sosa didn't play everyday like Frank did, if he got 170 AB against RHP, he would have scored 10 more runs, hit 5 more homers and had at least 3 more rbi which would equal Frank's production in those categories. You can't just extrapolate the numbers like that. There's way too many variables. And Sosa didn't play everyday because he was TERRIBLE against RHP. Why would you expect increased success against them?
