If Alpha's "flag art" story disgusted you...

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 06:48 PM) Cool. So here's another piece of art I'm sure all you supporters of this will enjoy http://pluginamp.com/network/node/3575 here's the photos of the dog starving to death in the art studio as people walk around it drinking cocktails. very edgy, what an artist! http://elperritovive.blogspot.com/ Apparently this was also a hoax of sorts. They found a stray dog before the show and brought it in. They fed it and gave it water. The artist's point was "to expose people for what they really are - 'hyprocritical sheep'," because they wouldn't care about the dog on the street but it is the center of attention in an art gallery. -
QUOTE (Shadows @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 09:34 PM) I hope that wasn't the full video, because if it was that was the lamest s*** ever No one got "beat up" and it was just girls b****ing at eachother They knocked her unconscious, waited for her to wake up, and then continued beating on her. They're saying she may have some permanent hearing loss.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) Ask either. That whole area is very territorial. If it is any arab vs a jew or the US, of course they side with the arab. But there is a pecking order among the countries in the region, and the Palestinians are at the bottom of the s***heap. Many years ago, my mom worked as a waitress near Midway airport. Met all kinds of people. A common strain was that other arabs always said something along the lines of "don't trust the Palestinians."

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 11:48 AM) Just wrong. Regardless of your abortion position. I think that, outside of a couple of messed up art students, everyone agrees on that. I'm really trying to understand what is artistic about this. -
Good stuff. I think Cowley might have a step on Konerko and Thome, though.

This has to be the most messed up thing I've ever heard. http://yaledailynews.com/story.html

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 07:58 AM) They taped it for the intent of posting on-line to humiliate the girl. There were a couple of mothers on the Today show telling some odd tales about how the victim was to blame and that she actaully was warned not to go in the house. It is an interesting case but the two girls that really took it to her should be hit with really nice jail time. They girls were joking about it when they were arrested and hoped to be out for cheerleading practice later that day. I believe this was actually the second time these girls attacked her but I could be mistaken. 2 of the girls were on probation for trying to run someone off the road.

I'd look into picking up a used guitar. I got a Taylor for $250 on eBay two years ago that was in great shape. List price was $600. With the $100 cheapo stuff, you'll have a harder time getting good sounds and playing. Might be a little discouraging. But, on the other hand, if you decide it isn't for you, you're not out very much.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 08:51 PM) I no where implied that they didn't. And the idiot who planned this deserves to be scorned by her fellow students, most of whom honored the flag and at least walked around. However, I want to know how this can be considered 'art'. And how come it took all day for the fire marshall to have it removed. Did you read the article? It was a social experiment. The whole point was to see if people would go out of their way to avoid stepping on the flag, and they did. She didn't just lay them on the ground to make some political statement.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 04:07 PM) Political parties change through time, members of the party might leave. no big deal. That's a valid point, but I don't think there was a radical shift between 2000 (VP nomination) or 2004 (running for nomination) and now. He was all for the Democrats a short while ago. It's different when you look at it over a longer time scale.

QUOTE (juddling @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 10:41 PM) Oh Boy....as the downward trend for Hollywood continues...here comes....Fast and Furious 4 Maybe the writers will go back on strike... Saw Die Hard 3 over the weekend. On par with the 2nd IMO, an ok action movie. Does not live up to the awesomeness that is Die Hard or Live Free, Die Hard.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 11:10 AM) Clinton's recent attack ad was tested: Seemed to go like this: Clinton supporters loved it (Surprise!) Obama supporters hated it (Surprise!) People in the middle didn't really care. How does that work anyway? They sit you in a chair and hand you a potentiometer and you turn it to how much you like/ dislike something at any given instant?

My favorite part is that the reporter was 1000% subjective. He wasn't even interested in be an objective, impartial reporter.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 09:05 AM) 9th inning, Sox down by one with 1 one out. Thome/Konerko/Dye/AJ/Crede/Hall/Uribe whomever singles or gets walked. Time for a pinch runner... I want Owens on this team as a 4th OF. 9th inning, Sox up by one run. I'd want BA subbed in for his defense. Tough call either way on who provides more value off the bench.

You CAN prove evolution. It has held up after countless new discoveries. It is the foundation of modern biology. DNA and genetic information, something not known about when evolution was first realized, fit right in with it. Again, that's the difference between science and ID/ creationism. ID/ creationism cannot be observed, tested, or measured in any way and so it violates the basic definitions of science. Our education system is not based on (nor should it ever be) the majority's will. As Crimson pointed out, how many average Americans really know anything about evolution aside from what they might remember from their HS biology class? How many really know and understand what ID is and what the basic foundations of science are? QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) Such a system would further worsen the difference in education between rich and poor. That would undoubtedly cause a large widening on the income gap, and we'd start to see a diminution of the American Dream and the chance at success. Poor would stay poor, rich would stay rich. That system you suggest would help only the very well-off. This is getting farther off topic, but what about school vouchers? That way, those who couldn't afford private schools on their own still get public support and the system still invites competition. With the way schools are funded by property taxes now, doesn't our current system give the wealthy much better schools anyway? In many areas, private schools spend less per-child than their public counterparts with better results.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 05:07 AM) Cool! Thank you, that is really interesting. I would like to see an overall, this was the final 6 weeks. As we all know, the campaign runs for over a year, countring the primaries. Just counting the general, we have a lengthy run. Unfortunately that's the only one I've been able to turn up. Still, though, counting just the general, how many times do you think you'll see Obama or Clinton down in Texas? How many times will McCain bother coming to IL, CA, or NY? With the way they are politically, the most populous states get ignored. Instead, candidates focus heavily on states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida. I also think it suppresses voter turnout in the deep blue or deep red states. We all "know" that Illinois is going to go D, so a vote for McCain here doesn't really count for anything. If it were a national election, a vote for McCain would count just as much as a vote for Obama/ Clinton.
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 10:53 PM) Well, if we did go by popular vote, it would cut way down on travel. Hell, visit NY, Chicago, LA, Dallas, Houston maybe San Francisco, Detroit, Orlando, Atlanta, and a few others, maybe 12-15 states and you have a campaign. At least 25 states would drop off the Presidential map and another 10 states would only be convered if it was strategic for a candidate. A REP could not just write off California and a DEM would have to come to Texas. But no body would have to got to Idaho or Vermont. They only really spend their time and money in a few key states anyway. Even with the Electoral College, many states are still ignored. In fact, it'd seem that a majority of the population is ignored since many of the most populous states are guaranteed to go one way or the other. Here's a map of where Kerry and Bush spent their time and money 6 weeks prior to the 2004 election:

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 03:45 PM) Ugh. I really dislike it when people keep animals like that as pets. They're mostly rescue cases. His facility is not really any different than Brookfield or Lincoln Park Zoo. He does a lot of animal education/ demonstration for kids in the area. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 01:33 PM) I had a near-encounter with what was "either a jaguar or an unusually large mountain lion" in the Big Hatchets in New Mexico. That according to the experts I sent the track pics to. Fresh track in the snow that hadn't softened at the edges yet in the NM sun - couldn't have been more than a few minutes that I missed it by. The thing was probably watching me from the brush nearby while I was checking the tracks. For reference, an "unusually large mountain lion" would be about 7 feet long and weigh 250 pounds. Pfft, that's nothing. When I was 7 or 8 I had a wolf try to eat a donut out of my hand! There's a guy at the end of Farrell road in Lockport who has a couple of wolves, some coyotes, a peacock (those things make some interesting noises) and a 700 lb. bear. He's got all the necessary licenses to do so and was there long before any of the developments/ subdivisions came in. When my parents built their house back in '91/'92, they were one of the first in the area. The guy used to walk his wolves on a leash while on horseback. I was on a walk with my dad and we ran into him. He had the wolves off at a safe distance, but I wandered by them a little too close. If my dad didn't pull me back right away I'm sure it would have taken my donut and maybe part of my hand. Here's an article on his ranch. His house is right next door to a subdivision, and his backyard butts up against it. I'm surprised there's that many people that would want to live that close to those animals. http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/heraldn...WOLF_S1.article -
QUOTE (joeynach @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 11:47 AM) I think Blue Ray won b/c its perceived as a more accessible technology, given that its on every PS3 and associated with every sony products. I just so happened it contained better quality. Oh I'd agree that quality isn't what won the battle there. It was just a counter-point to the VCR vs Beta argument that quality will lose.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) From what I can tell from the trailer and website, this is exactly his point. Scientists lecture about everything that happened after X point in time, but they have no explanation for what happened prior to that. I don't know about this movie specifically, but that's not the debate that Intelligent Design advocates such as the Discovery Institute or Answers in Genesis advocate. They throw out evolution all together. From what I've read on the wikipedia and NCES pages, this movie is more along those lines than trying to explain pre-Big Bang.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 12:15 PM) yea i read that in the suntimes and i was wondering the same thing. that's really weird if a wild cougar just wondered into chicago They just recently spotted a cougar in Wisconsin for the first time in decades. Wolves are also starting to make it over there. I think the populations out west (Yellowstone in particular) are growing and migrating out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Cougar -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 10:58 AM) Well I doubt I'll be going to theaters to watch it, but if he gets a good discussion in the country going I say good for him. I have no issue with evolutionary theory, nor do I have an issue with there being a creator. I don't see how both ideas can't mix. The problem comes in when people try to push purely philosophical ideas and beliefs into the science realm. Science cannot deal with supernatural events and things like omnipotent creators. We can detect gases and background radiation and hypothesize that there was a Big Bang. We can't collect data on God. As far as I know, science does not try to deal with where the matter came from for the Big Bang or what anything was like before the Big Bang, but I could be wrong. Another problem that anti-evolutionists have is that they often confuse cosmology (formation of the universe) and abiogenesis (formation of life from non-life) with evolution. I'm not sure if this movie does that, but I really can't find much information on their website about the actual content of the film. The Wikipedia page for the film lists a lot of controversy. There's also this site run by the National Center for Science Education. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expelled:_No_...ligence_Allowed http://www.expelledexposed.com/
