Seems like most people are going to use the money to pay off debt or on foreign electronics. That'll help retailers, but it'll worsen trade deficits and won't help US manufacturers.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 13, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) Wasn't that around the same time they added "Under God" to the POA? The pledge wasn't written until the 20th century, during the 10's or 20's IIRC. "Under God" was added during the "Red Scare" to help seperate Americans from the Godless commies. This country has a motto - E Pluribus Unum

If you thought the subprime mortgage crisis was bad...

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 13, 2008 -> 12:54 PM) In additional to the ladies mistakes, isn't there some fraud on the part of the dealership? They submitted incorrect information. Seems like that is where the lender was duped, not by offering credit to someone whose correct information would not have qualified them, or at least I hope would not. This happened a lot with the mortgages, too, and is why the lenders are under investigation. Still, this woman is not a victim, but a moron. She has a fixed income of $2500. She knew the payments would be $1300. That doesn't even include the insurance on a $100,000 car with 500 HP, which I can only imagine are through the roof. She took out her life savings as a down payment on a LEASE, so she won't ever see that money again. Yes, the delaer fudged the numbers to get the loan approved, but she knew what her payments were. This isn't even like an ARM where they adjusted suddenly. -
Subprime car loans: http://jalopnik.com/355234/sub+prime-bmw-crisis In all seriousness, I think this woman represents why many people are opposed to whole-sale bailouts of the people who bought way more than they could afford based on their own stupidity, vanity, and greed.

Davis really sounds like a moron by harping on the time frame. McNamee has explained several times that he may have been mistaken on the dates. That's not really the important part of those comments.

She wants a plant for her office. Kinda lame, but we're not very big on V-Day. I'll probably pick up some flowers, too. I tried to order her the Harvey Birdman DVD's from Amazon 2 weeks ago. I checked when they were supposed to ship last weekend and it won't be until March 4th!

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 12, 2008 -> 12:51 PM) Some people are very excited when their issue of Seventeen arrives "Have you heard the Good Word?" "Yeah! Britney's back in rehab!"

It just shows how awful Couric is.

I didn't have a problem with talking/ rudeness watching Juno at the Loews (now AMC) in Woodridge. I also saw the Darjeeling Limited there. It was a tiny theater and there were a grand total of 5 people including me and my girlfriend.

I've got a copy of "Great Expectations" at my desk that I read on lunch occasionally.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 11, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) Honestly, who knows. My cost of living in downtown Chicago has increased rapidly over the past 5 years. Im sure I could be better about spending on eating out and whatnot, but when tombstone pizzas are upwards of 6 bucks per, you wonder how we got to this point. You also drive a Infiniti and buy $80+ pants. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but if your spending habits go up with your salary, you'll always feel like you don't make enough.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 11, 2008 -> 12:53 PM) Right, because that's exactly how God operates. Well, I think that's the point. If there is a God, he probably doesn't care about your strikeout, your HR, your team winning the WS, your rap album, etc. etc. Or, if he's going to get the credit for the good, he has to take the blame for the bad.

Daily. I've had a few concusions, probably doesn't help matters.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 11, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) Huckabee press release. As far as what I'm reading out there goes, the guy in charge did some sort of back of the envelope calculation, without bothering to see which districts still needed to be counted, and declared that there was no need to count the last bunch of those votes because McCain had won. And since then he's spent his time avoiding phone calls on the subject and trying to avoid Huckabee's lawyers. At least the Republicans have moved on from trying to make sure votes for Gore weren't counted to making sure only the right kind of Republican votes are counted. Eh? Eh? Eh? Thank you thank you we'll be here all week. It was 1500 votes. They could avoid all of this bad press if they just count them. After all of the b****ing about the WA elections in 2006 (or was in 2004), you'd think they'd want to count every last vote.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 11, 2008 -> 11:27 AM) I never make enough money, never. My salary has almost quadrupiled my salary since I graduated college, but it seems like I have less money now than then. I recently read a pretty interesting article on this. They interviewed people with incomes from average (~45k) to 1M+ No matter how much money someone is making, they A) always feel like they're middle class B) if they only made twice as much money as they do now, they'd be set.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2008 -> 10:15 AM) Mike Huckabee is officially staying in the race, per his speech this morning from CPAC. I know Obama gets a lot of love for his speech making ability, but Huck can work a room just as well, if not better than Barack. I absolutely loved him on the Colbert Report. I'd never vote for him, but he's a very personable guy. At least on TV.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 06:46 PM) Jeez, you must have extraordinarily long legs if you're 6'3 and have a 36 inch length. Sure do. I'm oddly proportioned.

QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) Denver over Seattle in 1994. Golden State over Dallas last year. Yep, there's the occasional upset. But only twice in the last 20 years has a 5-or-lower seed made the NBA finals and only once have the won it.

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 03:43 PM) Yeah he's saying they both want to pull out if Iraq, and if that happens before it's stablized then Iraq will become a hot bed for terrorists. So in his opinion and many others as well, pulling out is equivlent to surrending to terror, since that's what many beleive will happen. See, your comments here have a bit more substance than what Romney said. When you say things like "surrender to terror," you're shutting down debate and discourse with shallow rhetoric. It's comments like that which made me dislike Romney as much as I did. If you surrender, you're letting them do what they want, and they want to attack America. It wasn't exactly a stretch. It wasn't just this speech. Every time I heard him debate or give a speech, it always included some lame shots at Clinton or liberals in general and over-the-top comments. The guy was like a used-car salesman, trying to say anything to get his customers (conservatives) to buy into him.
-
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) Right that's not the quote StrangeSox posted. I paraphrased because I was too lazy to dig up the quote again. He said electing Obama or Hillary would be surrendering to terror. Not much difference between that and what I said. I'll rescind my paraphrased quote and go with what he actually said. It's still BS over-the-top rheotoric that a majority of this country is just fed up with at this point.
-
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) Nope I don't think democrats want to lose to Al Qaeda, I just think we have different ideas of how to win. That's a perfectly reasonable position. Rheotoric like "Hillary and Obama want to surrender Iraq to Al Queda and let them attack America" is just BS for the ultra-conservative audience he was pandering to.
-
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) If you don't feel that's right, then fine. You're certainly entitled to your opinion. Reading through his speech again, he made some good points. But he just went way over the top with some of the rhetoric to the point that it was comical.

FYI, here's a transcript of the speech: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/07/us/polit...transcript.html

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) Yeah, because 8 seeds never, ever have a chance against 1 seeds. Why waste that round? I mean, I can't even remember a time in my lifetime when an 8 seed has beaten a 1 seed. I went back through the '87 season. 7 teams with a 5 seed or lower made it to the conference finals. Houston, a 6 seed, was the only won to win the Finals. More often than not, it was 1-2 or 1-3 seeds in conference finals and 1 or 2 seeds in the finals. I still think that the NBA playoffs are way too long and should be shortened by a round.
