Will it actually reduce fuel consumption or encourage more people to drive more frequently, resulting in the same amount of fuel being burned overall? CAFE standards won't fix squat, IMO. Why bother with the inconveniences of car pooling or public transportation if your car gets good gas mileage? People need incentives to change their habits to reduce fuel usage, not just increased MPG. I've never been a huge fan of legislating ground-breaking technological break-throughs, either. There's an awful lot of people working on increasing fuel efficiency of vehicles right now. Congress passing a bill won't make the laws of thermodynamics go away. Increasing MPG that far is going to drive the cost of cars way, way up. There was a good op-ed in this month's Car and Driver or Road and Track on why it really won't work. No one is absolving the players from responsibility -- they are receiving plenty of criticism on this board. You keep making up strawmen because there's no valid defense of Greg Walker at this point. Please, answer the question you keep avoiding: When is the hitting coach responsible? Under what circumstances should they be fired? Do they bare no responsibility for having the worst offense in baseball?

If you don't fire the hitting coach for coaching the worst offense in baseball for about 11 months now, then when do you? Granted, a big part of the problem is the talent on the field. No one is excusing that, but Greg Walker is also failing at his job.

I was listening to this game on the radio while putting together a ginourmous Weber grill and washing my car. Great day to be outside and working with my hands, and as a bonus, the Sox win! The offense finally stepped up today for Mark. I still don't like the homer-or-nothing approach, but I'll take whatever they can give at this point. MB pitched a fantastic game for his 100th win.
