  1. QUOTE(Shadows @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 01:17 AM) Im pretty sure I made it clear my feelings, you're post was pointless.. And you should be kidding me when the person who started this has Egbert listed as a person who could come in and pitch if Buehrle was dealt.. so yeah, rethink it You've made claer your feelings, but you haven't provided a single justification as to why you think he won't be any good or ever reach the majors, other than he's 24 and lighting it up in AA.
  2. And then we can pass a law to disband Al Qaeda and after that we can pass a law to make power plants 100% efficient.
  3. I found this discussion by of bunch of economists, pseudo-economists, and a handful of engineers: http://www.econbrowser.com/archives/2007/0..._standards.html My Internal Combustion Engines professor joked that, with the way emissions standards are going, a car's engine will have to be an air purifier in a few decades. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 08:45 PM) Well...yeah. Pollution is an externality, so a perfectly free market will not yield a good outcome. The government should intervene. But maybe not in this way. Your post before this one is a good example of how this sort of regulation can go wrong. It depends on what your intentions are -- less dependence on oil, environmental concerns, etc. Pollution is being effectively controlled in other ways, and there are better means (IMO) to reduce total automotive emissions than increasing fuel efficiency. There's still efficiency to be squeezed out of the ICE. But a heat engine can only be so efficient. The government making laws demanding that they be more efficient than physically possible just isn't going to work.
  4. Let's not forget that its also arbitrarily (have their been any studies showing what a reasonable MPG goal should be?) telling the market what it must produce instead of letting consumers and producers decide for themselves.
  5. Will it actually reduce fuel consumption or encourage more people to drive more frequently, resulting in the same amount of fuel being burned overall? CAFE standards won't fix squat, IMO. Why bother with the inconveniences of car pooling or public transportation if your car gets good gas mileage? People need incentives to change their habits to reduce fuel usage, not just increased MPG. I've never been a huge fan of legislating ground-breaking technological break-throughs, either. There's an awful lot of people working on increasing fuel efficiency of vehicles right now. Congress passing a bill won't make the laws of thermodynamics go away. Increasing MPG that far is going to drive the cost of cars way, way up. There was a good op-ed in this month's Car and Driver or Road and Track on why it really won't work. Here's another one: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic.../704220301/1008
  6. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 04:24 PM) The score has a free feed. I remember from last summer that they couldn't broadcast games online. It switched over to reruns. Has that changed?
  7. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:58 AM) You caught me. Hopefully he will get back to his fun facts of 2005 instead of his career after that. Mmmmmm, 5 Chicago Style Vienna Beef Hotdogs... That was several groin injuries ago. I doubt he'll ever get that step back. Vienna beef hotdogs are delicious, though.
  8. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 16, 2007 -> 12:15 PM) I did answer this when someone else - or possibly you - asked it. I am not going to repeat it. Find it and quit wasting my time. By the way - see Eddie Murray - twice - those are examples of when you get fired. I've asked you several times and you've always side-stepped the issue. There's no search function on this board, so there's no real way to look through your post history. Keep side-stepping and dodging. Don't bother to actually defend your position. Fine by me.
  9. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 16, 2007 -> 09:35 AM) Somebody has to take the fall? How about the crap players? How about trading the crap away. You and I have no idea what is going on behind closed doors, if they like Walker, if they are listening to him, what the hell is going on. Other coaches and management and players know and that is for them to decide - not a freaking fan that doesn't have a clue. Suggest a fix sure, but I don't see how that fixes anything. I really don't. Getting different players that have a different style of hitting fixes things for sure. How do you want him to fix it? Are you suggesting he isn't going through tape with them or working them out in the cages? Are you suggesting he isn't telling them to do different things? These are veteran players with those swings. You fix it by getting differen players in here with different approaches. So when Walker gets replaced by Manny Trillo our hitters are going to start turning everything around? You think that is the answer. The point is that it won't help. He will be working with the same exact group of hitters. You need different hitters, not different coaches. You are asking for a cosmetic change to make you feel better about the team. I am asking for a real change. Start getting rid of some of these jamoke players and you can start with Uribe. You can flat out release Jerry Owens as he has no value at all. I would bet it would be Manny Trillo. Why would you want that? I have no idea. However, it is a different voice - it is a change. No one is saying that is the answer. No one is absolving the players from responsibility -- they are receiving plenty of criticism on this board. You keep making up strawmen because there's no valid defense of Greg Walker at this point. Please, answer the question you keep avoiding: When is the hitting coach responsible? Under what circumstances should they be fired? Do they bare no responsibility for having the worst offense in baseball?
  10. If you don't fire the hitting coach for coaching the worst offense in baseball for about 11 months now, then when do you? Granted, a big part of the problem is the talent on the field. No one is excusing that, but Greg Walker is also failing at his job.
  11. QUOTE(Wanne @ Jun 15, 2007 -> 04:35 PM) What's a good question is if he's not teaching it...why isn't he fixing it? That's his job. Exactly. Either he is coaching the wrong things, or what he's coaching is completely ineffective. No, it isn't entirely his fault. No, this offense won't turn around if he leaves. But he's clearly not helping and is just dead weight.
  12. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 07:41 PM) No, but there's definately something wrong with Ozzie. See my signature. Ozzie isn't the main reason this team sucks so bad right now, but he is still a terrible manager.
  13. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 06:25 AM) You are completely right, I totally missed where you provided proof about Walker's statements in my original question. Could you please post a link to that? So I take it that you have no answer for when Mr. Walker should be held accountable? And you're not denying that he is, at best, totally ineffective right now?
  14. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 01:32 PM) Everything I have ever seen attributed to Greg Walker is up the middle and the other way. I have never once seen anyone legitimate attribute to Greg Walker saying to pull and lift. Personally when the evidence shows that players aren't doing what they are being told to do, I would hold them accountable, but then again that's the way I was raised. I guess in this day and age finding someone else to blame is a pretty common thing. I guess in this day and age, finding a way to completely dodge the question is a pretty common thing. Firing Walker probably won't fix this offense. But he clearly isn't getting the job done. If you're a manager in the real world and no one under you is performing well, guess what? Your ass gets canned, too. As far as Greg Walker preaching up the middle and the other way, if that's the case, the hitters don't ever listen to him so he should still go. Right now, at best, he's totally ineffective.
  15. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 05:21 PM) Do you not go out to popular bars or clubs on weekends either? I usually tune out the s***ty music as best as I can. Either way, its still just background noise and I have no idea which latest one-hit-wonder is singing/ rapping their generic music.
  16. I was listening to this game on the radio while putting together a ginourmous Weber grill and washing my car. Great day to be outside and working with my hands, and as a bonus, the Sox win! The offense finally stepped up today for Mark. I still don't like the homer-or-nothing approach, but I'll take whatever they can give at this point. MB pitched a fantastic game for his 100th win. Congrats!
  17. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 12:36 PM) Oh my f***ing God, that lineup is hideous 3 minor leaguers and an injured backup catcher. What's not to like?
  18. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 06:49 AM) yeah really. He's had top ten hits with Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Eminem, he has an annoying sounding voice, he always says "convict" and his song "lonely" is played at USCF when the opposing manager goes to the mound to talk to his pitcher. There's a good reason I haven't listened to FM radio in over 5 years.
  19. Embarrassing. Swinging strike three, game over.
  20. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 05:30 PM) Thome....prove to me you can be clutch! Done.
  21. QUOTE(Nokona @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 04:45 PM) Anemic does not properly describe this offense. It's more like leporic. Terri Schaivo-like.
  22. QUOTE(Brian @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 05:17 PM) Been saying that since Tues. I've been saying it since mid-May.
