How much time will you have when someone breaks in your door and runs towards your bedroom? 30 seconds? 60 seconds? I don't know anyone who can wake up, gather his wits, grab a gun, load, unlock, and be ready in that amount of time. You need to be loaded with one on top. So I made the decision for myself and my family the risk of a home invader versus the risk of kids playing around and decided I'd keep everything in my safe and broken down.
The cops I know have gun safes and lock them up as well. In fact it was my friends in the Border Patrol that convinced me it was the smart thing to do.
It's a personal choice but in the worst case scenario, I couldn't live with having a child find one of my guns and hurt themselves or someone else.
Thieves generally don't charge towards the bedrooms.
